ABOUT THE GOOD PLACE
From creator Michael Schur (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Parks and Recreation” and “Master of None”) comes a unique comedy about what makes a good person. The show follows Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell, “House of Lies,” “Veronica Mars”), an ordinary woman who enters the afterlife, and thanks to some kind of error, is sent to the Good Place instead of the Bad Place (which is definitely where she belongs). While hiding in plain sight from Good Place Architect Michael (Ted Danson - “Cheers,” “CSI” - in an Emmy Award-nominated performance), she’s determined to shed her old way of living and earn her spot.

One thing that Brent lacked that Eleanor didn't was: Self-awareness.
For all her faults, she knew that she was a terrible person and that she had to become better.
Brent legitimately had no conception that he was ever a rotten person....
Like *damn.*
Brent is also like 60 years old, yet acts way less maturly than Eleanor, who I think is in her late 30s.
and that's on fragile masculinity
@@billyhenerson2871 Early 50s and late 30s respectively.
Then later like a thousand Jeremy Bearimys go by without him appearing to learn much. I don't remember exactly what it was, but he was still telling women to smile more and not understanding why that's not OK.
Sounds like my brother.... His lack of self-awareness is matches with the size of his...... ego.
They're meant to all be the same level of badness, but I refuse to believe he is the same level as Chidi and Jason. The point system must be so forked up
He could be close to old Eleanor. She used to be a real lard.
@@CantDraw-bq6pj Perhaps, but their collective point total probably ended up being the same.
@@CantDraw-bq6pj her job was to scam old people of their money.
She was the top salesperson as well... I think she's worst than this. Brent does it unconciously because of his upbringing. Eleanor knowingly did all and then more
@@ultimateking9849 That'd make sense
They dont need to be on the same level, as long as they have negative points they all go to the bad place, meaning that someone with -1000 points can easily be with someone who has -100000 points, not to mention with all the unintended consequences someone who is a saint might be with someone who is the devil.

Yes!! It bothered me that Michael or Eleanor didn’t see the problem. That punch was more than deserved
The show always forgets that Chidi is buff
I want that they make the explanation that he is that buff because he couldn't decide what muscle to exercise canon.
Well think of all the times he got half way up a flight of stairs, then changed his mind and went back down....then went back up....then down.
Plus all that time holding two almost identical objects, unable to pick just one.
And all those cramps from stomach aches did wonders for his abs.
And then it gives us a nice little remind once or twice a season - seeing a buff guy is nicer when it's not every five seconds.
The characters forget.
The show _never_ does.
The reason they gave is someone told him exercise can relieve stress, so he just never stopped working out.
Brent; "I'm in the Good Place, haven't you heard of it?!"
Tahani Internally; *I could ruin this whole man's career*
Thousandth like 😅😅😅
*Brent:* "I'm in the Good Place, haven't you heared of it?!"
*Me:* "Yes,dude,it's the literal title of the show."
One of Tahani's best moments. She doesn't brag, she doesn't seek attention, doesn't name drop, she finally feels free to be honest and forking nailed it.
Tahani going off at Brent is one of my favourite moments of hers!. I love her so much you guys 😆
I love that she doesn't just call out Brent but she also calls out every story where there's some Gary Stu character that's every amazing thing at once. The Mary Sues of fanfiction have their origin in the Gary Stus of canon fandoms.
It's so great, because, as you might recall, Tahani's written a book. One that just so happens to be about her life, just as Brent's was about his. So when she's calling out his book for its egregious shortcomings, she knows what she's talking about.
@@Landis963They are kinda different though. Tahani wrote a memoir while Brent wrote a novel with a self-insert.
@@animeotaku307 They are, although I could probably make the argument that, like the self-insert novel, a memoir tells a story about oneself that is designed to entertain. The memoir is rather more honest than the self-insert, however, which I think cheapens Brent's work and gives Tahani more ground to stand on.
Remember guys when you all hate Brent this much, know that means the actor is doing an outstanding job!
True! Like the actress who plays Umbridge is outstanding
I do that with characters I absolutely despise. I tell myself that the actor is just doing an amazing job
He plays being a jerk well. Like in HIMYM or Silicon Valley.
that's a great point, you sound like a drama teacher who just showed your students this episode and are teaching them things.
Especially because this actor is one of the nicest guys, so I've heard.
Brent: fork you!
Chidi: *I’m bout to end this man’s whole career*
What career? What career?
Brent is the kind of person that refuses to acknowledge his own faults at all costs, so confronting him about how terrible he is and how he needs to step the fork up is probably the only way he’d actually understand he’s a terrible person
Thing is he really doesn't think he has faults.
Not to mention that he already "knows" he might actually be able to get in to the Best Place and away from these folk who are merely at Good Place level.
Joseph Micheal Holland THAT WOULD ACTUALLY BE COOL AND I NEED TO SEE A SPIN-OFF SHOW ABOUT THAT
Joseph Micheal Holland, watch that be the series finale
Yeah no, that wouldn’t work.
Well, they kinda do at the end by telling him he’s actually in the Bad Place.
You can see Chidi's veins starting to throb when Brent insults Simone. It's also credit to Michael and Eleanor, who often fought with Chidi, and never pushed his buttons to make him that angry. Though to Eleanor's credit she always maintained that Chidi was a good person who deserved better.
simone’s smile of triumph and sisterhood while she watches tahani rip brent apart is so goddamn good. i keep replaying it. really captures the joy of having someone on your side idk
I love it sm
I realize I'm a few years too late, but, generally, when people are speaking, you look at the speaker, not the one being spoken to. Simone takes this opportunity not to look at Tahani, but at Brent's reaction to Tahani's comments and revel in them.
Brent is the type of guy to complain about Mary Sues; his character that he wrote is a complete Marty Stue.
Stue? I mean, I agree, but I usually see it written as Marty Stu.
There's no Marty Sue. They are called Jack Sues.
I just call 'em Mary Sue regardless of gender instead of overcomplicating matters.

The fact that Chidi actually punched someone surprised me. I didn’t see that coming and I didn’t think he had it in him to do that. I loved it
He can't lie to actual deamons , but can punch an ashhole. Really shows you how arrogant and ignorant Brent is.
This was the first time I've ever seen him punch somebody. And that really surprised me.
Chidi had his Ben Wyatt moment finally, and it was glorious!
Bro it’s like his body just did that and he didn’t think about it
They should have used the "better place" thing having Brent "accidentally" find out Chidi or someone else had higher points than him, like Tahani did in season 1 with Eleanor, that way he would have tried to gain more points, only to find out that he's going down instead of up, that way he would have to try and find out "secretly" why it was happening, which would get him to eventually discover/learn that his intentions count, and other stuff.
That would have also worked as a form of torture for him, knowing he's not "the best"
I was thinking that too!
It would have encouraged him to do better things to earn points, but his motivation for them would have been corrupted, which would have defeated the point.
Oh ho ho! I like the way you think!
Yeah, but I think he wouldn't believed it. He's so selfish that he would totaly ignore that those aren't his memories because he thinks he's the best. I think they handled it pretty well.
Yes, you should be an architect.
This show uses memory wipes/resets in such a clever way. Usually a show would use them as a lazy 'get out of resolving the plot' card. Here, though, they enrich the plot. And rather than returning the characters to a shell state, it deepens them. That's genius.
Right now the only human who knows everything they have been through and knows the truth about the points system being royally forked........is Jason.

1:45 Chidis face of just knowing he's in an unwinnable argument but still wanting to continue it is hilarious.
"It's difficult to win an argument against a genius, but it's virtually impossoble to win against an idiot."
-I don't know who originally said that.
You can kind of see when Brent is tearing up after Tahani lays into him and he says “I accomplished something,” that he is genuinely hurt. It’s possible he knows deep down that he never really accomplished anything on his own on Earth and he was super proud of himself for doing something completely his own. That’s why he lashed out so much
He never had the opportunity to grow from a mistake as money made them go away. He never faced proper adversity or hardship and, as a result, his “accomplishments” feel hollow and unfulfilling. He needs their criticism to create something truly worth accomplishing but instead is too used to being handed things on a platter.
Soulstealer56 I actually don’t even think he’s reached that level of clarity. he see’s all his accomplishments without the filter of how little he actually had to work for them and all the background connections and wealth that did the real heavy lifting, and therefore thinks that he’s genuinely extraordinarily talented and special because why else would life come to easy to him? He’s lashing out because this illusion is being shattered and he’s never had to deal with something he worked on (this time genuinely on his own) not being successful. His whole idea of himself is that “life is good to me , and that must be a sign that I’m above all others. I don’t need to work harder at anything because I already have all this proof that I’m perfect”
No, he sucks.
He was hurt
he was crying because he's a baby

Is it bad that I enjoyed that punch a little too much ?
Clarice Chau not at all. Brent’s a real ash-hole
We all enjoyed that, I don’t feel bad about that lol
Sometimes I forget that Chidi is muscular. At least it was put to good use finally.
This clip reminded me of a situation I had at work. Even when the facts stacked against this ashhole, he couldn't "understand" why he was in the wrong . This was portrayed so forking well! Btw Chidi did what we all wish we could do irl
Ever since this dude claimed that he wasn't racist for having a black dentist, I immediately lost all hope for him.
Tahani should have also gotten a few punches in.
I feel like Eleanor and everyone hasn’t made it torture-y enough like it was the first time around to be honest; at least Brent being a forking ash-hole might make them realise they need to be better people, all of them. Idk just a thought
They should have used the "better place" thing having Brent "accidentally" find out Chidi or someone else had higher points than him, like Tahani did in season 1 with Eleanor, that way he would have tried to gain more points, only to find out that he's going down instead of up, that way he would have to try and find out "secretly" why it was happening, which would get him to eventually discover/learn that his intentions count, and other stuff
It's not supposed to be torture: it's supposed to be an experiment to see if humans who kinda sucked (or, in Brent's case, were literally the worst) can get better in the afterlife
Lea G.M. Yeah but it really was the torture that lead to the og humans becoming better people as it kind of forced them to be, as they came to self realisations that maybe they could be better morally speaking idk
You can stop the censoring the earth is just a one giant ball of bad place
To her credit, Eleanor tried. But she realized she couldn't torture Chidi in good conscience because it would be out of envy that he forgot her. I think Brent and the others are torturting each other nicely now.
a rightful right hook by the man himself
You think that asking him 'why' all the time would work? Like asking 'Why do you think that was ok?' and then when he gives you a bad answer you just keep asking 'why' until he finally starts to think about it and realises he doesn't have an answer.
That's a good way to deal with any prejudiced person, but most of the time they'll eventually blow you off.
No kidding I was wathcing the episode and 1:50 and I YELLED "FORK YEAH CATHARSIS"
Brent is a terrible person, but gods he is a great character to throw into this story
At least they knew we wouldn't like him, which is why they never really humanize him or make his actions redeemable. They didn't try to make us like him.
@@billyhenerson2871 I'df say they humanized him just enough to make him feel real and to let us know he isn't entirely evil. He's just... terrible. He could possibly be redeemed by why waste the energy? People like him hardly ever change.

Something I am suspicious about, is that we never see The Point-System in Action.
We've seen after maths of it, ages ago, with 1 guy from a few centuries ago buying Rose's and getting +145 Points, and another guy from 2009 losing -4 Points, for the same task.
I know it's part of the rules that they can't see the Points of John, Brent, Simone, or Chidi, until the Test is Over (Though, I still can't see Why), but how do we Know that they are even getting Points?
The Point-System might be even more screwed up than we thought.
Actually, something just dawned on me, while writing this;
The Point-System takes 2 Main-Things, into account; The Consequences of the Action, and the Motivation Behind it.
We have already seen the Point-System having gone overboard with the analysis of the Consequences, appearing to take literally every single Event that occurs after and because of the Event, into account, this why every single human is destined to The Bad Place.
However, we still haven't seen if the Motivations for People are also screwed up.
Similar to how Michael said he couldn't just wipe Simone from Chidi's memories, as memories were much more complex than that.
Memories are not Pictures, that you can just cut out the 1s with a certain person in it out, and you're good.
Memories are all blended together, like a milkshake; You can try and just take the banana out, but then you're going to find out you're taking a lot of raspberry too, and before you know it, it's all gone.
Every single milisecond that Chidi ever thought about Simone would have to be removed, otherwise Chidi would he wondering why he was thinking about her.
And, even if Michael managed to do it, and only remove Simone from Chidi's memories, there's still going to be a lot of gaps in his memories, that he's going to wonder about.
What if Motivations are much more complex than we originally thought, as well?
That was a really well thought out analysis.

People like Brent must have been the toughest projects for the Bad Place Architects after the finale.
Love how in the end, Brent can't be fixed subtly. They literally have to spell it out to him that he's a bad person. He will not change for the better on his own.

Ooh, that's deep! 👍
Kinda wish they went with this idea instead but the original ending is still really good
I don't know how they can possibly get Brent to improve, because his entire worldview crumbles if he admits he's made a mistake. What a miserable, pathetic way to live. Still, I'm rooting for the Soul Squad to find a way.
I appreciate that in the end, in order for him to change, he had to be told he DID belong in the Bad Place. Every time Brent is confronted with his flaws in the story, he always says that he can't have those flaws, because he's in the Good Place, and that justifies him acting the same way he did on Earth. When he's finally told he's in the Bad Place, and realizes he can't use the excuse of "being a good person" because it's been proven that he's NOT, he's finally forced to confront that he was awful, and in his last moments he calls Chidi is friend and tries to give a genuine apology for his actions.
I love how after thousands of Jeremy bearimys, he still hasn’t made it to the good place
You can tell that Eleanor improved as a person because the old Eleanor would have snapped at him even though he deserved it no wonder she got in the good place she was the bigger person through out this season

I think to solve the problem the squad needs to make them believe they are in the actual bad place like in the first season with the original 4, because if you believe you are in the good place then you believe you are a good person and see no reason to change your morals/actions, that's why it helped the og 4 (Elenor specifically). They realised what they were doing to others had an eternity of bad karma and decided to change, whereas these new characters believe that the way they acted on earth was morally and ethically correct and got them to the good place in the first place. Does this make sense? It would also show growth in Elenor, Jason, Tahani and Micheal (chidi if he remembers). It shows them as mentors to other people who need improvement in a way that could empathise with the new characters as they have been in their shoes
