- Let's have a look at the difference between wings and spoilers today.
What is a wing?
What is a spoiler?
Where are they used and what are each of their advantages and disadvantages?

My rule of thumb is easy. If you can fit your head under it, it’s a wing. If you can’t fit your head under it, it’s a spoiler. Similar to the foot test for suspension. If you can fit your foot in between your wheel and fender, go lower
Or you could simply say if it splits air it’s a wing.
Imagine seeing a car with a wing and then trying to push your head under it prove that’s it actually a wing lmao
No actually true. A wing can have a gap under it smaller than your head but it is still a wing.
Another nice and very informative video. Say, could you make a video on front gt car splitters? How they work, what they do and even, why are they called splitters in the first place?
Sure, that's a good idea. Lots of teams get confused with this and not everybody gets it right. I will put it on my list.
Love this,
quick and to the point
well done video
I honestly did not kno the function till now.. thanks for the information
Glad it was helpful!
Nice video! A couple questions, though. You mentioned that the spoiler slows down the air creating a high pressure zone with the gurney flap; is that also a major factor of the less agressive spoilers like the one in the 911 you showed later? and if so, is that the main source of downforce with spoilers or is Newtons' Third Law still the bigger one like with wings?
It's both, slowing down means building a high pressure zone, which (if above the car) creates downforce. But it's also the directional change of the airflow.
I will do a separate video about Gurney Flaps in particular and go a bit deeper into the details.
@@BSport320 Thanks!
Great Video aggain!
Cool well explained 😊
Good content there. I just have 1 question, i know that a wing dw to drag ratio is around 3, what dw to drag ratio a spoiler produces (I know its worse but i wanna know how much worse it is).
That's a bit hard to say because you can test a wing alone but a spoiler only in combination with other bodywork. In general I can say that a spoiler is more efficient than you think and it can even reduce drag depending on the car's shape (Audi A7, Audi TT).
@@BSport320 true, I was underestimating the spoilers effects, I wasnt thinking on the drag reduction in road cars.
If wings increases drag then why people use it in races? Will it be helpful while cornering bcz on straights it might be disadvantageous
With a wing you will get enough grip to achieve a higher cornering speed. F1 cars for example have drs to kinda „open up“ the wing and reduce the drag
@@ahri7611 what about on straights?
@@vikramtalreja9 it’s ok on straights but can still be a danger. Because if drs is used the car may be faster but there won’t be enough down force to push down the car. There is a chance that the car will just take off the ground. That’s why drs is only allowed at marked parts of a track to use AND when it’s an overtake.
wings allow the car to go faster through corners because tires have much more grip to work with. wings do make car slower in a straight line hence why they adjust the wings for each track to give the car as much straight line speed as possible while still retaining enough grip to make tight corners. Its all about compromise.
Perfect! Thanks!
that's an awesome video :O
