The upper climate vents on the sides are aimed at the window area to keep the view of the side mirror clear. It is a fairly common feature on modern BMWs. The idea is that the vent will prevent fogging of the window which may disrupt view of the side mirror, it is linked to the windshield vents so when you're defogging the windshield that window area is also defogged.
This BMW is so advanced in almost all ways but sadly the drive train is an Earth killer. Should be an electric engine and not old tech ICE. Sure to be a nightmare to repair in the not so distant future.

Douglas, that extra vent above the usual climate vents next to the door on either side is to make sure that the side windows don't fog up. I think most cars have it but manufacturers usually hide it more than what BMW has here

"Upper vents" at 14:14 are for defogging the side-windows near rear-view mirrors. This is useful in humid environments, when in cold mornings every window gets fogged. So, with these vents you don''t need to readjust the climate vents to blow onto the side-windows and mess-up your perfect setup - those little vents already do the job. Many cars have these (even some budget ones!), so the only quirk of the XM5C is the design they choose for the vents (as in the other cars they just kinda chill above the main climate vents with no visual purpose).
you can't open the tailgate while you are driving or if the car is on D. I have also never accidentally pressed while driving. It is actually a lot further up from the other buttons than what it seems. I think it's better placing it there than somewhere near your left foot which is usually hard to find and some times you can confuse them with the hood latch.
I sold my X6 because I couldn't take all the beeping the second you opened the door... the front tow cap fell off every time I got a car wash... the doors wouldn't stay open if it was parked on a slight incline, like in my parking garage... the transmission was jerky... it was nice to get rid of it and get into a HEMI Jeep Grand Cherokee... smooth, great fit and finish, and great HP! Couldn't be happier for half the price even!
Hey Doug, you got wrong about the cluster. It actually shows/change a lots of format. You just didn’t turn on. That’s why it shows so empty ( 14:03 ) when filming. If you want the cluster shows much more complicate info then you need to go in setting to turn on. If you can’t find it then you need to go to service to perform update. And YES, you won’t be able to open/close tale gate while in “D”. BMW is not that stupid. My X5 has all the same features as this one, except M function. My X5 even has driver assist plus (Drive by itself) and I was asking you to review it back in 11/2019 but you rejected. Now you are reviewing this one. 😅😅

Wow... just wow. How does someone that reviews cars for a living not know something so simple? I guess it stems from the fact that he spends so little time actually driving vehicles... The wierd vents you mention on the dashboard actually have a very important purpose. The top portion of the vent is pointed at the passenger and driver side windows. This is to melt snow or ice on the windows so you can see the rear view mirrors in crappy weather. Trust me I'm from south Dakota.

One of the best cars in the world. Although I chose to go with the X3MComp with a tune that boosts to 600hp. It's a smaller more fun style SUV. But if you want more room and bigger seats then go for the X5.

Have driven an X5 for the last 5 years with the rear hatch open switch in that position and have never pushed that switch instead of the window switch. Even from the very first day of driving the vehicle having never driven one previously before.
The top part of the vent is for the rear view mirrors . They are aimed at the windows right at the mirrors and if you have foggy windows that will clear it for visibility.

Dyno results show the X5M competition puts 615hp to the wheels. So rated hp is about 700hp. BMW always sandbags the hp #'s.

I sold my X6 because I couldn't take all the beeping the second you opened the door... the front tow cap fell off every time I got a car wash... the doors wouldn't stay open if it was parked on a slight incline, like in my parking garage... the transmission was jerky... it was nice to get rid of it and get into a HEMI Jeep Grand Cherokee... smooth, great fit and finish, and great HP! Couldn't be happier for half the price even!

Hey Doug, you got wrong about the cluster. It actually shows/change a lots of format. You just didn’t turn on. That’s why it shows so empty ( 14:03 ) when filming. If you want the cluster shows much more complicate info then you need to go in setting to turn on. If you can’t find it then you need to go to service to perform update.
And YES, you won’t be able to open/close tale gate while in “D”. BMW is not that stupid.
My X5 has all the same features as this one, except M function. My X5 even has driver assist plus (Drive by itself) and I was asking you to review it back in 11/2019 but you rejected. Now you are reviewing this one. 😅😅

14:22 the "upper vent" is actually part of the windshield defroster setting, and it's aiming for the section of your side windows that may get fogged up and obscure your view to the side mirrors :)
Wow... just wow. How does someone that reviews cars for a living not know something so simple? I guess it stems from the fact that he spends so little time actually driving vehicles... I put 20k miles/year on whatever car I have, so I guess I have more real world experience driving in an enormous variety of situations, but it just seems like a common sense vent to exist that I can't believe someone like Doug (who loves attention to detail) would have such poor "attention to detail" themselves.

The wierd vents you mention on the dashboard actually have a very important purpose. The top portion of the vent is pointed at the passenger and driver side windows. This is to melt snow or ice on the windows so you can see the rear view mirrors in crappy weather. Trust me I'm from south Dakota.

One of the best cars in the world. Although I chose to go with the X3MComp with a tune that boosts to 600hp. It's a smaller more fun style SUV. But if you want more room and bigger seats then go for the X5.

Have driven an X5 for the last 5 years with the rear hatch open switch in that position and have never pushed that switch instead of the window switch. Even from the very first day of driving the vehicle having never driven one previously before.
The top part of the vent is for the rear view mirrors . They are aimed at the windows right at the mirrors and if you have foggy windows that will clear it for visibility.
