    As an above average pool player ( Fargo Rate 620) and american supporter, there were soooo many times that I tried to explain why snooker is a harder game and why snooker players can do great in pool even when it is not their game and their advantage, but there were always stupid people here and there who never agree with it. This match is a perfect example of how well a snooker player can perform in pool. Snooker player like Tony Drago even won World Pool Championship. And all snooker players like Ronnie, Davis, Alex Higgins, White... used to play in Mosconi or other pool tournaments and they got really far also. Now you guys tell me any pool player ever won a snooker world championship. Earl, Efren, Pagulayan, Filler, Shane....???? The answer is NONE of them. Surely they are some of the greatest in pool but to compete in snooker, they can’t be compared to a snooker god like Ronnie or Hendry.
    A snooker player can do well or even win a pool tournament even when they never practice playing pool. But a pool player can’t win a snooker tournament even when they try hard. That shows how advanced snooker game is.

      The difference is that just because the basics are the same doesn't mean the game is the same... Potting balls isn't the only thing needed in pool, 9 ball it gets easier... But 8 ball on 7 foot tables, there's a reason u don't see huge packs ran like u have in 9 ball.. More clusters more strategy more traffic... Snooker the balls go to the same area each time... It's obvious it's harder to do certain things on snooker tables, but don't act like it's not hard to do things on pool tables also

    • @TRANC3ak47

      destiny lags I never said pool is an easier game. There are even some aspects if pool games which is harder than snooker. Pool needs more creativity than snooker in shot making because of the frequency people can make 2-3 rail bank shot and carom shot because the pockets are fairly more forgiving than snooker. Because of that reason, you have to play a bit more attacking against same level or stronger player in order to win important layouts and matchs. Also, table speed and rail hardness are big factor in how you can cheat the pockets by hitting the edge of pockets, this is what pro players in pool do pay attention before they enter the match.
      I play both pool and snooker, but mostly pool so I understand the mind set of both. Snooker is still more advanced and it trains you to be a better all around player, attacking, defensive and strategy. That’s why snooker and English 8 players do so well in pool. Darren Appleton, Chris Melling, Karl Boyes and Jayson Shaw all come from Eng 8 ball background. And Ronnie, Davis, Drago, Higgins and White are from snooker background and they did well in pool also.

I could take a few frames off the very best pool players here or there but i could play ronnie o'sullivan or steve davis 1 million times and i would never come even remotely close to beating them. When you come off a snooker table with tight unforgiving pockets and play on a small table with buckets for pockets you can still pot even if you butcher the shot or hit the cushion first. Why do pool guys think that snooker players would struggle with positional play? Snooker players are far more precise with both potting and positional play. The only thing that stops snooker players dominating 9-ball pool is the break

    • @AngrierGorilla
      @AngrierGorilla 4 года назад +2

      Break is the main thing, because in modern pool is the most important shot. I would add jump shots too, which are often decisive.
      But there are other aspects of the game. For example Steve Davis and Jim Wych always say that in pool you have to use the spin (or english) a lot more than in snooker, so snooker players are not very used to it.
      Another thing that Ronnie O'Sullivan pointed out, is that in pool there are shots that in snooker you don't even consider, because they are impossible, but for pool players are pretty normal shots. So they don't often foresee these shots.
      Obviously snooker pro players could become very good pool players, but they would have to spend several years of playing and practicing to be top players and it's not worth it because of the little money involved.
      Last thing: modern pool is totally different from these images, the game has changed dramatically in last 20 years. Pockets are now smaller and break rules have changed. Nowadays snooker players could never improvise a Mosconi Cup against the top guys of 9-ball.

      The first game Ronnie wins is a good demonstration of his positional play. I watched the ‘96 MC yesterday, and you can see that Ronnie was struggling to get used to the weight of the pool balls. Certainly the reason he’s playing in ‘97 is because they started giving out more prize money, and he practiced a bit more. If a snooker guy gave it up for pool, and adopted the cue (which is probably important for getting more English on the larger pool balls), he would dominate.
      If an average player can pick up a decent break with a couple hours on a practice table, certainly a world class snooker player could develop a break with a bit of practice.

    • @Ironsvillage
      @Ironsvillage 3 года назад +6

      Also the pockets are very different, most shots in pool would never work in snooker and you could never cut a ball into the middle pocket in pool like you could in snooker. Pool players can cheat the pocket much more than snooker players, so they can over or undercut and still make it and get different positional results.
      Snooker players have to be much more accurate since the pockets are much smaller and they can't cheat it nearly as much. Also because the corners of the pockets are rounded so if you hit the corner you will very likely miss the shot as where in pool you can hit the corner and still make the ball because pool table pockets have pointy corners.

  • @udtojanpestillos2094

    The biggest difference between pool and snooker is the breakbuilding. In snooker it is much more difficult because you need to pot much more balls.
    Technically both sports are very difficult, but also here is snooker the more difficult one. Its obvious, the balls are smaller. The smaller the balls are, you need much more precision to hit them. Same with the pockets. In snooker pockets are tighter, so there is more need of perfect accuaricy.
    In both sport you need brilliance. But i would say, snooker is king of the sport. You can compare it to F1. Every F1 driver can drive also other series. But other drivers in other series have massive problems to get to F1 and aren't able to control an F1 car.

    • @tlhx1233
      @tlhx1233 3 года назад

      I agree with you but the F1 example isn’t right. F1 drivers are used to much faster cars but will cause them to push further, losing control of the car. Each sport requires time to master, it’s just the difference between how long it takes to find success.

    • @someguywhocanfly
      @someguywhocanfly Год назад

      Smaller balls require more precision? Not really mate, it's just the distances in snooker that do that. Smaller balls aren't any harder to hit, trust me, I've played all games extensively.

    • @someguywhocanfly
      @someguywhocanfly Год назад

      But you use a smaller tip on smaller balls, so that is cancelled out. I find it much easier to apply spin in snooker and especially UK pool compared to those big fat american balls. I don't know what games you're playing.
      American pool has bigger pockets and slidier cloth that makes it much easier to pot balls, it has nothing to do with the balls being bigger. UK pool is arguably the easiest of the three and it has the smallest balls as well.@blueboy189

Bigger table, more balls to pocket. Maybe once you get all the reds gone, it's more academic because the other balls are always in the same spot but still, so many more balls to worry about in Snooker so positioning would have to at least be just as important if not more so

      @@BigFellaThx A Snooker table is about 12 feet long and 6 feet wide: positional play is everything. You can be amazing at potting balls and still get nowhere in Snooker if you can’t control the cue ball - it needs to be within a few inches of where you want it every single shot.
      So if someone says they’re surprised at the good positional play, they might as well say they’re surprised that Snooker players are hitting the white ball with the thin end of the cue.

    Pierce and Davenport are like Ortmann, angry men. I was embarrassed by Pierce's angry fist at the other side. There's no call for that. It's a game more against oneself than "the enemy". And Davenport seemed to want to invest his shots with a venting of anger, jabbing at the cue ball with an "in yer face" coup de gras, but then missed a relatively easy shot at pocket speed, instead set it up for Souquet. Finesse is the name of the game. Ive never seen Efren play angrily. He directs frustration back at himself. Imagine pairing Pierce and Davenport, maybe their combined energies could cancel each other's rashness in some way. But Varner, quite the opposite nature from either of those two with a more even tempered player might have gained that needed point. So Varner's captaincy showed a poor matching I believe.

    im not blown away by the standard to be honest, im not just basing my opinion on this match - ive watched a lot of these great mosconi cup videos from the nineties, thanks for the uploads. i know the pressure is on, but ive seen better play by some lads in bars, and im not that far from this level of pool. has the level gone way up since the 90s or something?

    • @someguywhocanfly
      @someguywhocanfly Год назад

      Standards are definitely higher, but you can't compare a guy having a statistically amazing night in a pub with zero pressure to such a big event. Everyone who's half decent at pool has had nights where they just don't miss a pot, it doesn't mean they could beat any of these players in a match.

    I don't mean to belittle or disrespect Pool players because having wasted so much of my childhood playing various billiard games (And never gained any credibility outside of my immediate friends..., much like my guitar skills) I am keenly aware of the different strategies and skills that separate the mediocre player from the genius in the different disciplines.
    The simple reality is that the difference between Snooker and pool is there will never be serious competition between an American and European team on a Snooker table. With the exception of Cliff Thorburn (a Canadian), I can't think of a single person from the New world that can compete on a Snooker table with the best.
    I would love to be proven wrong, for the love of sport I would love to see an accomplished pool player go to Europe and show the snooker players how to play their own game. But up until now, it's always been up to the Europeans to adapt to the American game to gain any kind of comparison.
    And to be honest, given the success of the Europeans in the American arena (Alison Fisher as a prime example) and zero Americans in the European arena that are worthy of mention. I kinda feel like these tournaments are a distraction from their grown-up job.

    It's two different games. You can't compare. No snooker player has won a mayor Pool title. Ronnie has been playing quite a bit on the 8ball-tour. Good but still pretty avarage. I'm a huge fan of Ronnie but if I had a gun on my head and had to pick the best overall players I have to say Efren Reyes and, yes, Torbjörn Blomdahl. I'd say Jimmy White and Steve Davies is the best of the snnooker/pool players.

    • @someguywhocanfly
      @someguywhocanfly Год назад

      Snooker players don't care about winning pool titles because there's no money in it and they feel it is beneath them. But you can see that they can match up against and beat the top players in the game, at least back in these years. In 2022 they'd probably have a harder time though.

    Snooker vs Pool = Golf vs Pitch n Putt. There's no comparison in overall skill. Reminds me of McGregor vs Mayweather. Mayweather won playing a massively constrained game relative to Conor's overall skill set. It's the reason no pool player does well playing snooker and why Conor would have killed Mayweather in the Octogon.
