Heavenly droning, endless feedback, searing Drop D riffs, pummeling drums and bass= The Almighty Hum
There've been many imitators of Hum. What set them apart from the rest then and now is the drumming. Bryan was an absolute beast and not your average 90s band drummer.
@@Marathon97 yup you got that right! They’re one of a kind! The absolute f’n best!
@@Marathon97 Makes me so happy to see this comment. He was one of my favorite drummers of all time.

Dang. No “Why I Like The Robins”
thanks man
This has to be one of the most underrated bands of all time
flawless really. even their newer stuff they retained they space grungy sound
Straight up. They found that balance of getting famous enough to have all the people that should find them able to find them but not too famous to be jaded and lose sight of who they are. When Inlet dropped I was completely blown away. It felt like I was back in 2001. Anyone who was a teenager in the late 90s early 2000s knows exactly what that means. It's like watching a movie in your head. When you watch a movie you sit there and completely immerse yourself in that world. For an hour and a half you submit to the reality it creates. It's the same way for me with Hum. I can put on any of their albums and listen to it from start to finish and it's almost like time travel. It's weird lol
Amen
if you were a hum fan in the late 90s, it was like you had your own little universe to explore
@@ab8817 still feels like that now
loved this band since my highschool gf showed me thm around 99 thanks whitney wherever you r
15:31 The way he plucks that springy guitar lick, followed immediately by those crushing riffs to lead back into the chorus just made me giddy with laughter at how awesome it sounded. Nobody’s guitars sound quite like Hum’s
I’m glad someone else noticed holy fuck that was good gave me goosebumps it’s not often that live sounds better than the original for any group
Had to replay it over and over it’s amazing that kick smacks you right in the face
The isn't just one of the best rock bands of my generation. It's one of best rock bands of ALL TIME
Goosebumps when “The Pod” slams in. Their live tone was incredible. I hope we get a remaster of that record one day.
The sound on the last repress of that vinyl was spectacular too
Frankly we don’t need it, just a re-release.
In my mind, that’s one of the best engineered hard rock albums ever, audiophile wise. It’s got a pretty great dynamic range with hardly if any clipping.
I’d put White Pony by Deftones, Loveless by My Bloody Valentine and Rage Against the Machine’s self titled in the same boat.
hey guys they're re-releasing their entire discography
@@cosmonauta947was just going to say that. I’ve tried many times, but haven’t gotten into them until recently. As a cd collector, I’m stoked that they’re re-issuing everything.
I have goosebumps just reading this comment! no joke!
Thank you, Brian. You did such incredible shows for us with a sound that was all your own. You inspire us all with your music and will birth generations of drummers with your playing. Rest in piece
Damn I LOVE their live tone so much. Hum is one of those bands that are basically worshipped by their fans. I saw them open for Bush in like 1996. Hum was first, then Toadies, then Bush. I couldn't believe how heavy and badass Hum sounded. They were definitely the highlight of the night.
RIP Bryan St. Pere😔
An absolute powerhouse. One of the heaviest hitting drummers ever and knew exactly how to create drum fills that were like ear candy.
Yep, I saw that tour. Such a great memory!!
they killed it on "I Hate it Too" ... great up load.
At 26:20 Hum has entered the chat...
i love that song so much, it was amazing. is there a live performance anywhere of double dip?
I Hate it Too will always be one of my favorite songs until I die
This rules. Hum at their peak powers imo.
RIP Bryan St Pere
He was such an unbelievable drummer. So heavy.
nooo hermano, no me la coonteeess!. terrible batero.
120 Minutes off the chainz
Downward is heavenward is one of my top favorite albums. Seriously underrated musicians all of them.
“Downward is Heavenward” is a lost classic from the 1990s. Of course, us longtime fans know of its brilliance and long lasting legacy, but I think in a few years, hopefully sooner than later, the rest of the world will start to understand and appreciate this record.
It is so amazing that this was documented and is available to us. I could never say how many nights I went to sleep listening to You’d Prefer an Astronaut in the nineties and oughts. And almost as many times listening to Downward is Heavenward. Whoever is responsible for sharing this…thank you most sincerely.
they always go so hard on stars, and it's always so good. like, every. single. time.
The iconic middle of the song riff/tempo change was executed flawlessly if I dare say 🤙
What an amazing live band - they sound exactly like the records. Unreal - one of the best ever.
Such a wonderful band. Been a fan for a long time. Finally got to see them live when Deftones invited them to be part of there 2019 Dia De Los Deftones festival.
Hum have my favourite distorted guitar sound of all time. One of the greatest bands ever. This is gold.
was 11 years old and never knew awesome things were happening halfway around the world
I was eight and only two hours away :(((
i was still in my dad's balls
Bruh I was 45 minutes away 🤦♂️
@@derricksteele-oeler5957and you missed this, why? 😂
brilliant alt drum fills on Green To Me bridge... BSP forever!
Thanks for sharing! I was there!!! My Dodge Caravan died just as I pulled in the visitor lot!
Champaign scene represeeeeent! Milo, Love Cup, Menthol,Honcho Overload, American Football, Poster Children, more I probably missed. Made me feel pretty cool to live in Illinois in the 90s. Thanks for posting this.
Braid and C-Clamp! The Champaign scene was insane!
and matt was in honcho overload
Been a fan since I saw them perform on Stern. "You guys play like mental patients" 🤘
😂😂😂😂 he did say that!! That sound guy who was apart of Howard’s team was an ass lmaooo
Seen them in Oklahoma City at a little place called vzd's....
This just came across my feed and made me smile. I love watching these guys old tapes especially getting to watch Bryan when he was a younger man 😅. He was my friend/ band mate and I miss him. He was a very humble person and he would have been overwhelmed with the love you all are throwing out in the comments.
Man, I'm 30 now and just found HUM in the last year, would be amazing to go back and see this concert. Thank you for the upload!
I’m lucky to have seen hum in concert twice: once in Champaign or Peoria or something like that, and then at the Millenium Park show in Chicago. Their new album
Came out of no where and had been my top played record
This year
12:30 I wish Matt would still do that scream live. Perfect end to a song heavy, and beautiful enough to go up against and metalcore anyday.
Super powerful live Iron Clad Lou there at the end!
Perfect fucking opener for Electra. Perfect closer for a live set.
The greatest rock song ever, IMHO. I love seeing Matt crush that guitar jam session at the end.
i used to hangout at a movie store a few miles from my house, it was 1 of the only cool places in my small town... The dude who worked there was a few years older than me and in college i was still in HS... he knew i was a DJ and involved in lots of music... He burnt me a CD with Hum on there and i have never looked back... one of the greatest Rock bands of all time that few know about... cheers and thanks for this video. the good old days...
Such a legendary band
Sonically one of the more unique bands of my lifetime. The droning guitars were one of my favorite aspects of this era and these guys excel at it masterfully. Also cheers to whoever kept this footage all this time!
Woah, crazy fuckin' flashback memory dump in my head from this. Thanks YT algorithm. This is a free show, Moving On at PSU (concert every year in honor of outgoing Seniors). Also playing that concert was Goldfinger and Sonic Youth (as another comment mentioned). I was a freshman. In the crowd, I see myself and my friends in this clip. Great show, great memory. Thanks to the uploader for finding this gem so much later....also notice, no cellphones.
Beautiful, hum will always have my ❤
Great show, what a gift. Thank you for sharing!
Amazing quality! If only there were more high quality live bootlegs of Hum, that would be sweet.
Put it in the Smithsonian. Incredible video.
I’ve only just come across HUM and I fucking love them!
Welcome to the club my friend, they just re-issued their full discography on vinyl & CD. Unfortunately their drummer passed away in 2020 shortly after they released their 4th LP “Inlet”. Matt Talbot the lead singer has another band Centaur that will be releasing their 2nd studio album later this year.
Aphids is a good song that unfortunately wasn't released on album but you can find on RUclips as well. Also highly recommend Failure (preferably the magnified album) as well as Helmet (with their album Betty) enjoy and keep rocking 🤙
❤ I saw them spring break about a month before this show in Austin, then the next night in Dallas. Thanks for sharing
Mind blown🤯.. such a fresh and great job on stars🌟⭐️. Should be on every rockers play list....🎸🎶🎵🎧
Being a fan of them the very first moment I heard stars on the radio when I was much younger in the 90s, I unfortunately missed them live cause I had no money. So for years I’d look for them on tour but just was never able to see them. But finally seen them in 2016. It was like a dream come true. They are definitely my top 5 list. I will see them again if they decide to come to Cali again for sure. Got plenty of money now being all grown up and stuff now! But most definitely an underrated band from the nineties!
LMAO my dad hopping into frame at 10:03 and giving a high five is killing me
funny
is he the guy with the cap?
@@TheDragonNight5he is!
Im sure your pops def fw the fact that you're vibing to HUM too 😁
@@imabozoMeng he taught me well 😌
Hope this band hits a US tour for the Inlet material. RIP Bryan.
thanks dude, that is something of long gone age (sadly...)
I’ve been LUCKY enough to see HUM play live several times over the past couple decades. In Hartford CT. they were supposed to be on tour with The Promise Ring but their van had crashed and TPR didn’t play. That would’ve been an epic lineup! I’ve based a lot of my drumming style off of Bryan’s amazing work. The washy cymbals and sick little fills will reverberate in my mind forever ❤
damn, guess I attended Penn State 25 years too late lol
First time hearing these thanks to the algorithm and randomness of youtube, i seriously enjoyed this and will be diving into their discography :)
Tim Lash is a hero
9:15 i love the guys who immediately start hopping
Incredible footage, thank you so much for sharing! Just when I thought I'd seen all the Hum shows on the internet 🔥
What a great Setlist! Thank you for sharing
holy shit thats easily my favorite live recording of hum without a question
this is up there in the best live perforomance of all time. God bless you
Dang, this takes me way back to my senior year of college. Thanks for posting this.
Thank you so much for posting. Huge fan of this group but sadly never got to see them play live.
Thank you so much for uploading this, what a piece of media gold, ending the show with Iron Clad! Amazing, wish I could find more of Hum playing Electra 2000.
Same here! There's no footage of them playing that era.
matt got drip
just as stoked to see this now as I would have been 25 years ago, thanks
One of my favorite bands
One of my all time favorite bands!!!
Hum forever
it’s like drowning in a bathtub of love, and you can breathe
Whoever uploaded this, thank you. Thank you so much. I've seen them so many times. The nostalgia is unreal. Thank you so much.
man this old video and performance has great audio I wish I’d Like Your Hair Long had been on this setlist !
Watch the Fireside Bowl gig. The audio is excellent 🔥🔥🔥
@@killiangrey1 THANK YOU
Everyone sounds great this set. Thanks for the upload.
Thank you so much for sharing this.
Fuck man. Thank you so much.
really good live vocals
The Shoegaze kings, that Hi-Watt and Orange guitar tone though, getting old and watching your hero's pass from your generation sucks, I miss the 90's, life was easier back then.
afternoon with the axolotls has to be one of the best hum songs holy shit
Treasure Thank you.❤
So great seeing Bryan on a video I’ve never seen before.
Awesome!
I'd give anything for a Bryan drum cam vid. It doesn't seem like any exist which is heartbreaking.
beautiful
superb.
That's the Alma Mater of Michael Murphy, CMOH.
I was there on an 8r of shrooms. It's was bonkers. They hadn't kicked in until sonic youth went on. Then all hell broke loose. I'm pretty sure that's how it happened. Quite possible my memory is FUZZY and youth played a different year. Either way I was there for both or just the once.
Thank you!
RIP Bryan
thanks for introducing me to this sick ass band
It was i think 1996 or 1997 when i recieve the package from our relative in the US a demo Cd of hum stars and i think 1999 was the song became popular here in phillipines, so in 1997 we are covering it and nobody knows the song among our friends then years forward 1999 they realize we've been playing it long before it became famous among here in phillipines
Heavenly
Thanks for the video! Sadly, I never got to see them live. Most underrated band of the 90s!
Glad to see this out in its entirety. Good find
imagine hearing dreamboat into green to me into i hate it too... i'd shit myself LOL
Three perfect songs
Thank you so much for posting this!
Penn state is such a 1998 place to be
Amazing!
God their drummer was a heavy hitter. So good.
Excellent
