Co-worker who plays a lot of mobile games like Clash of Clans (or Clash Mini or whatever he keeps talking to me about as I nod along) is very excited about this. Asked me if I'd seen the trailer and how awesome the figurines looked and all I could say was the gameplay looked like garbage.
Of course I'm aware that the Blizzard of old is gone, but even back with Hearthstone and Overwatch you could still see glimpses of them coming into a genre with a polished AF take on a known formula and taking over the genre. I'm looking at this and while I know I'm not the audience, I couldn't tell you if it looks any different from all those other mobile games. Hell, I think the units look barely recognizable during gameplay and that says a lot when its original designs come from an RTS.
Either way, I guess we both got what we expected from that announcement and neither of us is disappointed, so good job, I guess.

Something that makes sense considering the timeline this was developed and it was under Bobby K.
Clash of clans was part of the unholy trilogy of greed in gaming which was clash of clans - Candy crush - Call of duty. Any games outside this trilogy literally didn't exist for high end executive's for a large part of 2010's. (Would recommend checking out jim sterlings old video on it).

It's a generic looking game with what looks like generic game mechanics, with a generic warcraft theme slapped on top of it, and on mobile, which is the most generic platform out there. There's nothing inherently wrong with any of it, but there's also nothing that sets it apart from the rest.

It reminds me of the power ups in Plants vs Zombies 2, where you could like earn one a week by playing or spend $$$ to buy outright, and the game being balanced to either use them or spend a ton of time failing over and over again as you slowly grind out what you need to actually advance.
