I grew up in L.A., and am now 66 years old. I remember riding the original Angel's Flight as a kid in the 50's. If memory serves me right, the railway took us up to Bunker Hill where all the old 1890's houses were.

My Dad used take us every once in a while to Angels’ Flight. I thought it was the greatest thing. My Dad grew up in a LA and he knew about all these “hidden gems”.

Angels Flight is always a great ride. Never had a fatality until it was 'upgraded for safety' and the person put in charge of inspecting and maintaining it had no education, no knowledge, and no experience on the operation of a funicular. I recall that, while researching an article I wrote on that section of Hill Street in the 1990s, I found out that Angels Flight wasn't the only funicular in downtown. Court Flight operated 1905 - 1943 where the Stanley Mosk Courthouse now stands. It had a steeper grade, over 40 degrees, and was shorter, 200 or so feet, than Angels Flight. Both were used to connect the residential neighborhoods at the top of the funicular with the business district below. Angles Flight was particular useful for students in one of the dozen or so medical, chiropractic, and osteopathic colleges located on Hill Street between 3rd & 4th from 1900 - 1950.

What’s interesting things near the Flight Railway?
One of my favorite places to visit. I lived in L.A for so long and me and my mom just recently went there. And just like you guys said you can't official say you live in Los Angeles until you ride the Angels Flight!

Greetings from New Zealand ... I was interested in this because Angels Flight features in many of Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch (and other) novels, as well as the TV series of course, where there is a murder on one of the rail cars (S04E01, filmed just before Angels Flight's reopening in the Fall of 2017). Anyway, thanks for the cool vid =)
You should come to Dubuque, Iowa. They have lots of historical attractions including a old shot tower, historical mines and more.

Several people have commented about the Bosch series on Netflix and the Angels Flight trolley. It was just freshly restored when they filmed for the series. The season (4) is based on Michael Connelly's book Angel Flight from 1999. At the books release, the trolley was in operation, unfortunately there was an accident a couple of years later, it was shut down, and didn't resume operation for almost ten years. For those that follow the Bosch series, the books are even better. I've been reading them since Concrete Blonde (1994). They really flesh out Hieronymus "Harry" Bosch.

The B..P.O.E. (Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks) on the lower arch just under Angels Flight was for the Los Angeles Elks Lodge #99 that was on top of Bunker Hill way back in the early 1900's.

I was in Iowa last May with my family and as we were taking a walk in the downtown area of whereever we were staying, I saw something like this except it went up a steep hill to a house. It was really weird looking! Btw, I love you guys and your videos ❤
I've been to Angel's Flight a bunch of times, and I've hiked up the staris besides it, but I've never actually seen it open for operation.
I started with the Penn Central Railroad out of high school working in the track dept(at that age I thought I was 'Invineable'). Later the Santa Fe Railroad picked me up and I was a Railroad Conductor for 37 years. In my travels I was able to see the 'Track Gauges' used for different applications such as yards, main track, industry track, mine shaft track, So Cal 'Red Car' Trolley track, and modern day 'Trolley Car Track'. By chance did you have any interest as to the 'Track Gauge' of the 'Angel's Flight Train as it compares to other track gauges and applications? Or have no interest whatsoever ?

Here's an interesting fact about the Angel's Flight! The design was inspired by the nearby Echo Mountain Railway's "Great Incline" which was the first to utilized the 3 track design with the passing in the middle.

Very cool, but being from Pittsburgh. There are 2 inclines that go up Mount Washington that over looks the city. Check it out online. .

My family has been in LA since the late 1800 and my Uncle had a competing business using a horse and carriage caring passengers up and down Bunker Hill. Unfortunatly for my Uncle in the 1920's he was hit by a car a died later in the hospital.
Investing note, in 1920's you didn't need a license or training to operate a car, just money. The driver had just bought the car and lost control down the hill.

Raymond Chandler mentions the Angels Flight in the novel "The High Window." He also paints a rather ugly picture of what Bunker Hill was like in the late 1930s.... A low-rent neighborhood full of small-scale grifters and the terminally underemployed.

With the exception of the patterned seat fabric, I was struck with how much the subway you rode is similar in structure to the older subway trains in Toronto. Possibly the same type of vehicles.

I rode it in it's first (and best) incarnation. Of course I also rode the P.E. from 6th. and Main to Long Beach for 25c. I have never forgiven the city for destroying Bunker Hill or Aliso St. There would have been Film Noir without them. Before the Subway tunnel was closed Glendale had a vibrant Downtown. Oh... that's another story. Bye for now.
Michael Connelly, the crime author, uses many different locales of Greater LA. He named one of his books Angels Flight.

To move people up large, steep hills that are difficult and tiring to walk, especially for people that live and work there. That was the original point of these in LA. What's so hard to understand about that?
@@arnoldschwarzenegger8005 i understand that hills are steep but they only work for one section of town and it most likely isnt 24/7, whats hard to understand is why thats such a waste, why not have public transit that runs 24/7 in all areas of los angeles, and not just one little thing, otherwise there isnt any point and doesnt make any sense
Michelle Marie Angels Flight runs the steepest hill and, it’s really steep. We have public transit but, Angels Flight is a part of city history. Its a fun way to get to the top and, it’s super cheap. Last time I rode it I think 2011-12 it was 25 cents.

We have a small tramway here in Bradford (UK) - called the Shipley tramway - Used to run up to Baildon moors - Were there was a small fair ground -Unfortunatelythats gone now - But of course those moors are still there ! Similar story opening & closing !
