Well done on the 4 day fast, and a really interesting video. Amazed that you felt so good during it the 4 days. I would have thought you’d have struggled way more than you appear to have. Given the results it’d be interesting to see that fat/muscle breakdown daily to understand the ratios at different points of the fast. You best get saving for daily DEXA scans 😁. Maybe there’s some medicine 3.0 type research going on to understand more of this in a broader population that you could get involved in. Surely it’s something the clever scientists, Profs and Drs (and Governments) need to be thinking about to be able to maintain a working health service, that proactively tackles the major causes and costs of medical needs of the wider population.
Haha - yes, well interestingly when I went back for DEXA 2 they asked me to sign off the data for their research as it’s u common for someone to have them 4 days apart - they’re usually 3 months. Perhaps I’ll write to them… as for the bigger picture - I’m not 100% certain big pharma wants medicine 3.0 to make us healthy and not need constant prescriptions… so it may just be on us rebels to be subversive… ‘sur the le pavé, le plage’
Extremely well made video here!!! 👏 The 50/50 split is super interesting. I think that’s my key takeaway. A large fast isn’t worth the consequences and I’ve got to get in the weight room. 😬
It’s a real tough be because that’s exactly my takeaway - until you throw in the -18cm2 visceral fat loss (which is massive…) - it’s a bit of a dilemma innit. Thanks so much man - I really, really appreciate the support!!
Yep - I think you and I are in similar boats but you’re younger - so packing on that lean mass might be a little easier for a little longer - once that cm2 is lower, eh?
Ok... I'll give it a go! And thank you. One of the takeaways for me is to work on incorporating regular weights sessions. Obviously until my broken bone is fixed, that's going to wait for a while! However I can still move my legs and do other non arm exercises:)
@@1stElement Hi, trying the four day fast. OMG could not stop thinking about food all day on the first day! Know nearing the end of day 3 and plotting what I'll be eating. Just curious to see if I could do it! Actually it's been easier than I thought!
@richardwilson1786 blimey - that’s a long fast to go straight in on! Well done for getting it to three days - some advice on your first meal - make sure it’s protein heavy!
Very interesting James! The muscle loss was a surprise there… have you tried Keto only diet? Matt has been keto since November and there’s been a huge positive difference (though no Dexa scan) . I’m not keto but I’ve stopped refined sugar completely and its seriously helped my iron deficiency:)
Yep - it’s a rough one isn’t it? Everything has a plus and minus to it and I’m slowly coming to the conclusion that the right path is to take a little of all of them..!! Apart from sugar - that’s a defo one and I am not suprised it’s helped with the iron deficiency!! And I’m glad to hear it! There’s so much to learn and do and I’m loving it - I’ve just read a brilliant quote that you’d love - it’s Thucydides ‘the nation that makes a great distinction between its scholars and its warriors will have its thinking done by cowards and its fighting done by fools’
Here’s an interesting Question for October and fasting in general…. I’m assuming you didn’t refeed (have a meal) before the dexa scan after the 4 days fasted. If so you may have simply had glycogen and water in your muscles at the first scan pre fast and after the 4 days that was depleted as dexa scans can’t differentiate between muscle glycogen, water and lean mass. I’m thinking of testing this via a dexa scan, then a 3-5 day fast. Then a single refeed meal and then another dexa scan. If the muscle glycogen stores theory is correct the next will show less muscle loss but maintain the fat loss.
Ok, do you know what - this is an excellent question and actually might be a great thing to try! Perhaps I’ll repeat the four day fast next year and to the DEXA at start/end as you suggest, with a meal just before it. It’s a great idea and the lack of glycogen and associated water in the muscles could account for a high proportion of the 2kg lean mass ‘loss’ - good thinking Batman!
Coming in did you expect the muscle loss, from Peters change away from fasting I’m guessing to some extent you did. I line the new plan I know for me I need to restrict myself Tia 12 hour eating window I do most of my damage after dinner. I’m 75 kg and 175 CM I would like to lose 5 pounds. Her me we go I’m commuting to a 14 hour fasting window for the next 2 weeks. I work shift job so it will be 9pm to 11am and see where it takes me. And then perhaps building in some 24 to 36 hour fasts. Thanks again for doing all this work. Dinner time now and then no food for the rest of my shift
Well I was thinking g it would maybe more like 3:1 or 4:1 (fat:muscle) not 1:1!! Yep, I think there’s a lot for be said for timing - I’m doing a similar thing where I’m doing z2 in the morning fasted - then strength work just before lunch (breaking the fast then with 16:8 or 18:6 fast) and having a really high protein meal for lunch. You’re welcome man - you know how much I appreciate your support here - let’s work on that visceral fat together - that’s the thing that will get us - do you have another DEXA scheduled?
@@1stElement I probably should have a dexa scan, I’ve never had one, to watch out for those 4 horsemen. I agree let’s work on it. I will let you know how the weight loss goes over the next couple of weeks and beyond for me. I would love to be below 160 by July, not for beach body, but rather I’m planning on another assault on my local mountain. The ride is about 80 miles and 8000 feet of vert most of it from what is a bout a 2 hour sustained climb that is pretty steady around 8percent
Ah man, that mountain sounds amazing - what’s it called?! Sorry - I assumed you’d had a scan as you said 175cm and I interpreted that as cm2 visceral fat…! I’m obsessed clearly - sorry, obvs that’s height..!!!
@@1stElement it’s mount saint helens if I roll out my front door it’s a 85 mile out and back. Beautiful ride I will take the go pro and get you footage and get it on here it’s a beautiful ride. Nothing wrong with obsession especially when it’s about your health.
You know that did cross my mind! The issue is there no such thing as pure protein is there - so it would really just be me on a high protein/keto/paleo thing for four days - there would be fats/carbs in there too… so I wouldn’t get any of the autophagy etc that comes with not putting any calories in…
@eamonnw ok - let me do a little more digging - Peter Attia briefly mentioned something like a ‘protein fast’ in a podcast some time back - let me see what I can find and then perhaps that’s a little experiment for next year!
I can put up with the bad breath occasionally for a hot, sculpted husband ❤
Hahaha - and one that’s alive too I hope..!! Thanks for all your help and support baby x
Love it.m Becs well done James such a great experiment
Great vid mate really interesting!

really enjoyed the experiment. Well done and thanks for sharing.
Absolute pleasure Mike - hope it’s been useful!
Super video mate
Blimey, thanks man - coming from you that means a huge amount!!

Absolutely - you stuck me as pretty lean when we met - so strength UKs be a great focus once that pesky collar bone is dealt with!

Great video! what if you tried a 4 day "protein only fast" so only consumed 1g/lb of body weight in protein? and thats it? during the 4 days?

Bit worried that dexa scans make you come out in tattoos 😂. Good video mate, very interesting 👍
Thanks man - yep, it’s a huge bonus, the tattoo thing!
4 days, no food - who's up fo that?
