Ian Dury was right. I spent the last 30 years or so in the music industry doing what most of what you’d imagine. The last 3 years have been fun (haven’t they..?!) with my wife’s breast cancer, surgery, brutal chemo plus lock down and all those fun and games life throws at us. I drank my way through it. At the start of 2023 I became sober, started working out - both physically and mentally - and this is the story of my adventures into the world and my head.

This avoidance makes funerals deeply personal and profoundly sad, compounded by our reluctance to think about mortality in our daily lives. ...

thank you for this mate
A pleasure!!
Money is my thing. It's a scary fact that despite being a professional with 2 degrees, I earn near 10k per year less than average. Genetics in my family means, assuming I dont get hit by a lorry, I will live into my 90s at least. How I will fund that...who knows! But I do make sure I have a healthy balance between saving and living. I don't want to look back at things I missed because of worrying about saving, so I prioritise.
Oh that sounds like you’ve got your @&£” together to me, Jenny…!! It may worry you BUT you’re doing something about it and it’s balanced - what a bloody inspiration!!!
We grew up with the terminator nice. You make a great point we aren’t alone, it’s easy think that we are. I would say I’m pretty lucky, I like what I do for a living and we are like you getting by, better than a lot of people currently so blessed their, but retirement is looming I’m 46, we have a start bit 20 years left to work and my wife is finishing her masters and is going to work as a school teacher next year so that should put us in a pretty good place so we are blessed. This would still be my biggest concern on the list of 4. I agree if we control the controlables and invest in our physical and mental health we will better equipped to face what ever life throws at us. I don’t know if it’s the right approach but I don’t stress, actually about pretty much anything, but particularly what’s out of my control. Just face the challenge in front of me and move on. So far it’s worked for me.
Yes!! All of that!! You’ve nailed it though - confronting issues and ranking them head on IS control - and that’s the key. Too many people our age either don’t know what the problems are or - worse - know there are issues and are burying their heads in the sand - control doesn’t come without courage and that’s… well, it’s a big step to take. I know that, first hand…
@@1stElement you certainly do you took control 18 months ago and I’m sure their was a fair amount of reluctance to make a clove change like that
Just ordered a pair based on this review. I have SPDs on my commuter road bike, so hopefully, these will serve me well through the winter.
I hope so too!! Keep me posted on how you find them!
Finally in my 40s i have ended up in a job i really love. Age has never bothered me (yet) and finances dont drive me beyond being able to do most things.
Mate, it sounds like you’re on a pretty even keel then!
Worried about finances approaching 50 ,struggling with purpose now kids are older too
Blimey Steven - I strongly admire your honesty here - hear you on finances 100% - so the control thing - if you jot down one little thing you have control of that you can do regarding your finances that’s a start - I’m literally going to do this today. Something super small. I think I’m going to do a day of going through my studio and just boxing up and putting stuff that I don’t use of eBay - doesn’t matter what it is - then using whatever we get from that to do a slightly higher job on our house. For me - that’s investing…. As for the purpose - what are you into? What interests, hobbies, passions do you have? And tell me me what it is that interests you about it - what you get from it and how ‘involved’ in said passion/hobby you are at the moment.
Really enjoy cycling , sportive , fitness and commuting , bought an ebike as a car replacement for environmental reasons , really like the micro mobility solutions , trying to commute to work daily , through a Scottish winter , so time will tell how deep into winter I get before getting back into the car lol
@@stevenpearson5718 that’s awesome - yep, I’m bracing myself for a descent into winter commuting and actually preparing a video on that stuff!! Ok - so if your passion is the micro mobility stuff - why don’t you start writing some notes on it - either just post to instagram or x - or make some RUclips shorts, write a blog - or even just own and paper - your thoughts on solution, issues, where it’s going, the importance of it all - just feel like you’re making a mark with tour passion and interest - it literally doesn’t need to ever been seen by any one else but just recording your ideas and thoughts can help make you feel like you have some purpose - I’d seriously suggest trying journaling too - genuinely - it’s a game changer - have you ever tried if? Do you know where to start (if not)?
@@1stElement never really journalled , I do make lots of checklists but never journalled
@@stevenpearson5718 ah ok - well journaling is a bit different - I didn’t know it at the time but the most valuable part of it for me has been the fact that you actually take that time to acknowledge the things you’ve achieved - humans are designed to just move on to the next thing but actually sitting there and writing down your day makes you go ‘oh yeah.. I did that today…’ genuinely it’s amazing how that grounds you! Look up some simple questions or prompts - there are loads but find ones that suit you - but make sure they reflect on the day, are positive and frame the next day for you - three questions is usually enough - focussed around what you achieved today, what you’re grateful for and what will make you feel police if you achieve the next day - it just gives you a few minutes to just stop and assess where you’re at and check in with where you’re going - the danger of not doing that is you just tumble along…
Where are you at with this stuff - help me out!
I feel no one wants to hear from someone who does a lot of activities anyway, but rather someone fresh to running. Clearly you don’t sit in any couch day to day.
I agree with you - that’s why this video has tanked… 🙃
You have no idea how useful this message was to me in old age. (sub'd)
Ah thanks so much - I’m pleased to hear it! You know, sometimes I make these vids and wonder ‘is it just me that thinks this..?’, so to hear this means a huge amount! Glad it was useful and thanks for the sub! Welcome aboard!
Fabulous completing the challenge, congratulations 🎉 I suppose I adopted most of this when I started my weight loss and fitness journey back in 2016 and have added more along the way over those years with learning. Yoga I’ve been doing 5 years now alongside exercise and as you know Kettlebells in the last year. Changed my sleeping habits and stopped looking at my mobile in the evening like advised. Will defo look into the app alongside my current routine as will be extra useful 👍 Would be interested to hear your biscuit recipe if you’re willing to share 😉😉 Hope you had a fab holiday
Holiday was ACE thanks!! Yep, your journey has been so good to track too, Geraldine - I appreciate your thoughts and ideas on these things! Enjoy the app - it's great - and YEP - oh god - ok, I'll do a cooking video...!! I'm a better drummer than Jamie Oliver too..!!
@@1stElement 🤭 look forward to a cooking video. Pleased you had a fab hols 🤭
@@1stElementdo you have to pay a subscription for the app?
@geraldinecoupland4162 no, not to just use it with bar codes - to search for stuff without bar codes I think it’s like £10 a year or something but no, I just use the free version!
@@1stElement brilliant, thank you 🙌🏻
You look great buddy, and I know you wouldn’t take back your grand tour even if you could.
Haha!! Thanks on both counts!
Seriously impressive video/series of videos, thank you! I'm not ready to commit (& fail) to the whole thing yet. So I'll be concentrating on the foody bit, you are what you right? Thanks again.
Absolutely - as I said - one thing leads to another for sure! I’d defo read that book by Chris Van Tulleken if you want to know more about food…
Great video, inspirational, thanks
Thanks so much for watching and commenting!!
Well done on completing this challenge James. You are an inspiration, though not inspiring enough to make me want to do this. I’m taking steps to improve myself, so some exercise (most days), read more now than I have for a long time, try to eat well (but avoiding UPF is hard - especially when one’s wife isn’t wholly onboard). Drinking water has always been a problem for me. I know I should drink more. Did you only drink water or did you also drink tea/coffee too? I find the diuretic effects of coffee mean any sip of water has my bladder suffering. I might try 7 hard and see how I get on, then see where it goes.
Thanks Hamish - yep, defo hard without it being a partner thing - there were a few times when Bex was like ‘come on - you need to go workout now or… ‘ - so I am lucky that we’re both in this together… just pick one UPF thing to cut out and replace with homemade - we started with biscuits. Haven’t bought a packet for 3 months now. But that app (Yuka) makes shopping easy - because you can see what crap is in everything at a glance - you’d be amazed - a similar product next to another might be fine! And water - no, the 3.7lt needs to be just water - anything else (tea/coffee etc) isn’t counted - so there seems to be a history of kidney issues in my family so it’s worth mentioning stepping up my game here - I never used to drink water - I could go a whole day without any - now I drink more (at least 2lt) and feel so much better overall - it seems to be a big thing - so yep - small changes Hamish - have a glass in the morning, with lunch and dinner and try to cut out one big UPF product and start with that… it’s not about big unsustainable changes - that’s pointless - but I have decades of poor choices to rectify and I’m also an obsessive…!!
I really enjoyed the Comfort Crisis and am loving The Art of Resilience - thanks for the recomendation. After these and also Jenny Tough's book, Solo, I have finally found a type of book I enjoy reading. Only taken 38 years 😂
Yep - it doesn’t matter when you find that out, eh..! Same with me! I promise I’ll read Jenny Tough’s book!
With all the work traveling I do I dont think I could manage the 75 hard. 4am starts to the airport and then straight to work makes fitting 2 45 min exercise sessions in impossible. The water consumption is also way too much for me
Full marks on watching the vid mate! Hahahaha!!!
Cheers mate. Seriously this video has made me consider if I can adapt it to something I can manage even with travel (75 medium perhaps 😂). One workout, 2 litres of water and maintain the other rules
@themussile3335 it’s got to be a challenge and so long as it is but it’s doable then there is zero holding you back man - I’m sure you can figure it out and just hit GO!!
Great video. Well done on completing your 75 hard.
Thanks Mike - it kinda snuck up on me and I was just doing it…!!
If you could only pick one bit to do, which would it be - stick to a diet, drink 4lts a day or do 2x 45 min workouts?
Interesting looking back isn't it. You look sooo much happier than back then. I did a photoshoot in 2010 (it was free, I'd won it) and absolutely not something that's in my comfort zone, but my husband came across one of the photos and interestingly didn't recognise me at first. Was interesting looking back through the other photos from the shoot with him (they're in a book, just for me, no one else) the person in those photos absolutely didn't know who she was. We learn and grow so much through experience. Good to look back and realise how far we've come.
It is! Do you think we'll look back on 'now' in the future and feel the same...? I kinda hope so!
@1stElement Back when I had that shoot done, I was unhappy, over weight and trapped in a bad relationship. Couldn't be further from that now, so hoping to continue in that direction for sure but not to change too far from it
Just further along on the current path. Sounds good to me!
I've never watched any of videos back, this was a great watch. You certainly look loads healthier, hopenthe next 6 years are as successful
God, I really, really feel it!!
Fabulous look back. Congratulations to you on all that has changed for you 🎉
Thanks so much! And thanks for all the support!!
Love this idea. I laugh at my first video but it's a fun journey to try and be better. I just wish I had the confidence to start sooner.
Oh yes - that’s the number one exercise I get my film students to do - find their face RUclipsr, scroll and watch their first upload - it’s always bad… and then we talk through why the only reason they’re where they are now is because they uploaded that video…
How has your life changed since 2018?
Yeah, thanks for getting me on this. Day 11 & suffering like hell!!!!
Oh no, mate… sorry..!! At least there’s no 30 milers at the end of it..!!
As a former aircraft electrician, i can tell you the best way to piss off coworkers is to not use a flush cut on the zip-ties.
Now THAT I can imagine!
That bloody goat. Why did I have to ask what its bloody name was???? Great vid - L2P seems like an age ago already!
I know, it really does, doesn’t it..?! What an amazing experience it was mate - thank you so much for it. And yep. The goat story is probably one of the best ones I’ve ever heard…!!
More golden advice, thanks mate 🙌
Thank you for the question mate - how are you going at the moment?
I love this vid. I agree with the Be Bored thing. I try to teach my kids this. I explain that it is really important to build up their boredom thresholds. It’s in the times when you’re bored and have no distractions that creative ideas are formed. I’ve had so many fun times as a result of being bored and coming up with some daft, hare brained scheme that resulted in the best of times. That said, it was easy to be bored when TV only had 3 channels and they weren’t 24x7, there was no internet, no gaming systems, no RUclips. It’s too easy not to be bored now. But when you take all that away (like when you go to Cornwall and can’t get any signal for anything) the kids love the freedom they get from being bored, and start to make their own fun skimming stones, jumping in waves, and they love it.
You know what - my two boys have had to endure (I’ll change that word…) - a 10 hour drive with no screens as the leisure battery in the van is faulty - they were brilliant company (aged 12 and 15) and have been funny and engaged all day as a result - it’s been lovely. I can’t agree with anything you’ve said more. The opposite of distraction is traction - I can’t believe I’ve only just worked that out about the word..!!!
Nice to see you both & love this,.let's just talk format.
Thanks! Yep - might do them from time to time I think - Bex is very knowledgable and more concise than me..!!
Thank you for sharing your experience
Ah no worries - thanks for watching and leaving a comment - means a lot!

@mikep1212 thanks mate - on all counts - very much looking forward to the hols!
Thank both for such an insightful and useful answer :)
Ah - thank YOU for the Q mate - I’ve learned so much from you over the years - in probably just giving you advice back you’ve given me!
I didn't realise you were doing an ask thing. I'm sure there would have been something I wanted to ask. In regards to @matt_legrand question, I love running and riding without music as I get to go through any thoughts or problems that are happening. Sometimes whilst riding I don't think, more than should I go left or right and it's really freeing if that's the right word. Just nothing else but where should I go.
Well do more for sure! It was lovely sitting with Bex and chatting - we do that a lot anyway! 100% all in for allowing yourself to just ‘be’ without distraction - Micheal Easter talks about this a lot in Comfort Crisis.
Thanks for answering these!
Thanks for the question mate - had me thinking really!
"If you want to do something then get on with it" Yes!! I've gotten bored of the "one day". I hear it so often and am so aware that one day might never come. I've got a physical list of things I'd like to do before I'm 50 (not because I think my life will be over after that, just needed a focused time scale) and I'm loving ticking them off. Most recently... paragliding. I love the mountains, so when was in switzerland for a race 3wks ago and saw a company advertising paragliding, I grabbed the opportunity. What an experience ❤
Jeez - what was paragliding like..? I think I’d like to have paraglided not so much like to paraglide… if that makes sense..?! Good for you on the list - the journey to ticking each of those off will be a blast!!
@1stElement it was amazing. I was buzzing for hours afterwards. One of those oddly surreal things to comprehend - taking a few running steps and then floating peacefully away from the mountain side and over trees. Beautiful.
@jennycampbellritchie4705 oh that does actually sound beautiful!
Thanks SO much for the questions - they’re in the description so please add your own answers in the comments and the link to the book recommendation is there too!
Lovely video. I am so on board with this, lovely to have it affirmed, I let the positive outlook slip from time to time and fall into old habits of a negative narrative, not today though! Life begins here. Thanks James
Ah mate - thanks for watching! I know how your brain works and always take a bit of a lead from you anyway! It’s so often a case of being aware of your thoughts and keeping them in check, innit!
Great upload. I am 63, one habit I have picked up. To stop making silly noises when I bend my knees etc, I breathe only through my nose. Ps, I also don’t touch alcohol. Why would I knowingly put poison in my body. Great upload, I’m hooked.
Hi Grant - 100% great advice on both fronts. I can only agree about alcohol 563 days after managing to stop (who’s counting..?!) - but I can also very much see it from the other side in regard to habits and addictive behaviours - only too well. You’re a great example to us all - no silly noises, eh! Love it, man!
Aye very very true, I had this conversion with my younger in years but older in mind and body 3 hrs before watching this.
How very odd - but great to hear too! Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
