These were some really good explanations, and you really throught this through. Ziggy is also a great example, as they didn't get him "right" until Xenosaga III, and once he came into his own he was incredible. I had to tackle Cyan in my hack Final Fantasy VI: Divergent Paths. The main thing was fixing how Sword Techs worked by making them a game of "catch the bar" rather than "wait it out". I made the Retort flag persist beyond 1 turn, so that Cyan could set it once, and be guaranteed a double damage counter-attack. I also fixed the stat calculations on the Gauntlet relic, and added a flag that restricted certain weapons, including the katanas, from being used with the Genji Glove. All of this was to gently nudge the player to give Cyan a Gauntlet and use Retort to set up massive damage counter-attacks, while being able to do full-party attacks in between.
I should get back to cleaning up/color correcting all the others and updating their imgs in the wiki so yall can use those as well in your future Perfect Party thumbnails. Looking forward to seeing those future videos!
actually a very interesting video. i've played the game a lot but i've always ignored many different facets of the game. i don't know it you'd get that much traffic, but i'd really be interested in more Xenogears breakdowns about different aspects of the game regardless of whether its being changed in the perfect works build
I did make a number of Xenogears guides on my own channel. They go into detail into some of the underexplained mechanics of the game and how they interact with the various characters.
1:00 Allow me to elaborate on this note. -I'm not sure if bug is the right word-. I guess it is, but there's a twist: while the DEF UP flag did get set, there was NOTHING in the code that checked for it. I had to create code for it to work. As for what it does now, it's a 50% modifier just like Attack Up/Down. I figured I should use that as a reference to keep some congruency. Also, stay tuned. There's more to Rico's changes (and everyone else in future vids), but we'll get to that later. Edit: To further clarify, I didn't find code for DEF Up on Gears either, but the code for Fei's and Citan's A/D +/- spells did work in both settings. Citan's is only a 10% modifier vs Fei's 20%, but Fei could have Citan's on top of his own. Lastly, using the opposite spell reverts the fighter to neutral. You had to do it a second time to get the stated effect.
My first play through I always used Rico even though he was so much less valuable compared to Fei, Citan, Billy, and even Bart. I just like that one big beast character even if he didn’t live up to it. Had to give him all the drives and use Billy to speed him up until speed shoes. I moved off him later years. Too much and still not shine much. The Rebuild makes him so much fun and a real badass, finally! My son and I finished a playthrough and he had time to shine. My other son is now playing and Rico is one of his favorite characters. He’s a souls game guy and he only likes viable characters. I would say y’all very much succeeded!!
Congratulations on the analysis! I'll be waiting to hear about the other characters, but not just about them. I think it's important to balance the bosses as well, and if you address that in the videos, it will generate more content too. It would be great to make the boss fights more challenging since it's usually enough to gear up well and you pass easy on the bosses. Obs. An ability that would be interesting for him is taunt, as it could increase the chances of the enemy focusing on him.
Yeah, we did actually try giving him a taunt early on, but it did cause issues. We "stole" the code from Bart's taunt spell, and it worked for Rico, but whenever Bart and Rico were in the party and Rico taunted, they went to Bart. Until we delve a bit further into the code, it'll have to wait, unfortunately
I would have given Rico a flat-damage buff that scales off his Strength or HP. This, in turn, would give him a type of Def ignoring passive. Regardless, you guys are definitely on track in fixing his weakness in battle.
I know it wasn't mentioned here, but we actually did : ) We've expanded the deathblow system, allowing for additional effects to be applied by certain deathblows. We plan on going into it in depth in a video after each of these character videos have released, but we did give Rico and a couple others deathblows that ignore enemy defense entirely.
I don't blame you. It turns out that the numbers were there for him to fit that archetype, but it just wasn't executed well. He was tied with Citan for the second highest attack cap at 100, and Adult Emeralda's was even higher at 135. I made Rico's cap 120 to help him stand apart from Citan while Emeralda and Citan go down to 130 and 95 respectively. Citan goes back to 100 once he gets his sword.
As much as I agree than Rico badly needs these buffs, it is weird hearing you complain about Fei having more HP than him while ignoring that Fei's also 8 levels higher.
HEllo, I love the work you are doing this. I would want to donate a few bucks for your work, where can I do that? Also I have a no flash mod when you strike an enemie in battle can you help out how to make it work with your mods?
I appreciate the feedback. Just to be safe, we don't want to accept any money, lest we draw Square's ire. In regard to the no flashes mod, it should theoretically stack with this mod, if you use the patcher, then apply no flashes. If it is giving you issue though let us know. This is definitely a QoL feature we want to ensure compatibility with.
We're trying to make the game more than just those three, you know. Citan's got some slight nerfs in his attack, though he does get some new tools like everyone else. He also has a new weakness where his Deathblow effects lack debuffs, thus they only benefit himself. Even Rico has access to debuffs after his first dungeon to help him become a team player. By the way, the attack nerf goes away once he gets his sword. Emeralda received extra speed to help her become viable. That said, I lowered adult Emeralda's stat caps just a little bit since they were absurdly high. They remain higher than everyone else, but it's more reasonable now to stop her from outpacing her peers so quickly. She doesn't need to deal damage on par with our version of Rico while having access to extra turns.
*walks to end of bench* Rico..... you're in kid.
Things are only going to go uphill for the Battling Champ.

Finally my boi Rico gets his time to shine! Can't wait for your video on Maria.
happy to have found this project! nice work my friend!
👀 The exact colors of that Rico scan in the thumbnail looks familiar! lol
Glad to see it being put to good use

Finally, at least someone understands with me about rico

GOOD strategy!
Rico finally real
I love Blanca
Its kinda sad too because in Lore you'd expect Rico to be one of the stronger characters of the party since he is the battling champ.
@@roslolian11More than just the Battling Champ. He demolished Fei in the boss fight and took absolutely no damage.
omg your dead pan voice, and your thoughts are so handsome im weak
First playthrough, I assumed Rico was the slow tank and the game was pretty hard. 😅

@@ArueziCan't argue with that. What's really odd is that he starts at level 8 internally. What should be a head start still has him lagging behind.

200hrs +. You are wrong, Rico is actually good. Paired with Chu Chu and Fei is OP. What are you on?
ChuChu hard carrying the team fr
If he needs others to make him work, then he's not good.
