Hakone Tozan Railway - Rhaetian Railway partner railway in the Japanese mountains south of Tokyo

- Clips of the Hakone Tozan Railway between Hakone Yumoto and Gora Hakone. It is a mountain railway on the Japanese island of Honshu, south of Tokyo near the JR Shinkansen station Odawara. The railway is relatively well known among European railway enthusiasts because the company has a partnership with the Swiss Rhaetian Railway. While on the RhB a Ge 4/4 II and an ABe 4/4 III railcar from the Bernina Railway bears the name or livery of the Hakone Railway, the majority of the Hakone Tozan Railway vehicles are based on the livery of the Rhaetian Railway, the Bernina Express and Glacier Express painted. In addition, the new vehicles are optically adapted to the RhB's Allegra railcar and there are numerous information and advertising posters with photos from Switzerland.
The mountain railway is built on standard gauge tracks despite the cape gauge that is otherwise usual in Japan and despite the extremely narrow radii and is one of the steepest adhesion railways in Japan with a gradient of up to 80 ‰. Unlike in Switzerland, to gain height and change the direction of travel on the slope, there are no spiral tunnels installed, but rather 3 hairpin bends in which the train changes the direction of travel and the locomotive driver has to change the driver's cab.
