13 years later i keep coming back to this video!! This is the video that taught me how to crochet and to this day i use parts of this pattern in my projects
Just learned how to crochet. It took me 20 tries to get the hang of it but I'm finally making a decent hat. This will be Christmas presents for all my friends.
She gives clear instructions on what stitches you need to do for every round. If you don't know how to do any of the stitches she talks about then you need to look up a crocheting basics video.
I don't know if anyone else has said this but another thing that you could do instead of leaving a hole in your work when you skip a stitch is to single crochet decrease which is when you insert the hook in indicated stitch, pull up a loop, insert hook in next stitch and bring up a loop in that stitch leaving you with three loops on your hook, yarn over hook and pull through all three loops on your hook. But it is really up to the creator if they want to skip a stitch or decrease, personally I like the decrease and I have only been crocheting for a year or so and have taken up knitting which is hard and easy at the same time.
thanks! super easy, so proud of my first crochet hat! :-) I had to edit undo some because I used thicker yarn and fatter hook so my hat was way too big - unraveled to the row where you double crochet on the 10. I'm so proud of my self- yay Jesus! Wish I could share a pic with ya on here :-)
I am reposting a pattern for the video I posted a few years ago. Here is the pattern the easy way if anyone wants it. My hat wasn't turning out right until I did it this way. I have now finished three hats! I am doing this in several posts bc it's too many characters. Threadbanger Crochet Hat Slip knot + chain 8 1. Connect 2 ends and do single crochet (I recommend using a stitch marker like a bobby pin on the first stitch for easy reference later-move the pin up to your new row as you come back to it each time)2. Single crochet twice in each stitch all the way around 3. Next row: stitches 1-3 single crochet, stitch 4- single crochet twice in same stitch (repeat pattern for rest of row) 4. Next row: single crochet all the way around 5. Next row: 2 single crochets in each stitch 6. Next row: stitches 1-4 single crochet, stitch 5- single crochet twice in same stitch (repeat pattern for rest of row) 7. Next row: single crochet all the way around8. Next row: stitches 1-5 single crochet, stitch 6- single crochet twice in same stitch (repeat pattern for rest of row) 9. Next row: single all the way around 10. Next rows: 7-13 single crochet twice in the appropriate stitch and then continue pattern 11. To add depth: add as many rows of single crochet as you want to make it fit your head (takes 10 rows for me) 12. To finish: single crochet in stitches 1-3 and skip 4 (repeat all through row); final row, skip every 4th-5th stitch
Broke my ankle in 08' and was not allowed to walk on it for 6 weeks. Anway, after I watched this video my husband went out, bought tons if yarn and crochet supplies, and I became a crazed crochet addict. Since then I've sold hundreds of my own hat designs on etsy and beyond. Thanks Threadbanger for being my muse. I love you!!!!!
They told you to watch their how to crochet video - so for those of you who are frustrated, you probably just need to get more familiar with the technique beforehand. I found this video extremely to-the-point in a good way! I love the way my hat is turning out!
I made this hat and it was so easy! Once I discovered the pattern, it was smooth sailing! Thanks so much. I already have 2 of my fiends begging for one for Christmas!
I wish I could give this video 6 stars! That is such a cool hat! I have teenagers who might just wear that. So, I am 51 -am I too old to wear something that awesome??? I LOVE IT!! Thanks!
I had wanted to use up my extra yarn for something, but didn't know what. I had found these oversized beanies and wanted one, but they were expensive. So I came here, and now I can make my very own [customized] beanies thanks to you! Thanks. I'm loving my new beanies. :] And all my unused yarn is part of my wardrobe. :]
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I have tried to crochet about 5 hats and non of them have turned out good at all. I was able to crochet this hat perfectly. Thank you again!
THANK YOU!!! I just made a hat for my 10 year old daughter, and she thinks it is AWESOME! This is my first crochet project, thank you for your video! :)
I just happened upon this video in my love of craftiness, and then BAM right in the middle there just so happens to be one of my favorite bands, and I got really really excited.
I did this project today and I finished it I was so happy, although at the end, the last row was still to big for my head so I just added another one but instead of skipping two I skipped three, so after that it was perfect!!! Love it!! Thanks for the video! please add more crochet stuff!!!
Awesome tutorial! This is the first time I've ever crocheted anything and your directions were super easy to follow. I made a burnt orange beanie and I wear it all the time!
Corinne- You are ADORABLE!!! You remind me SO much of my daughter...funny & cute! Thanks so much for the fun hat instructions!! I am kinda obsessed with crocheting & always looking for new ideas! Making this one for my daughter in turquoise suede yarn...hope it turns out has cute as yours did!! Big thanks to your grandma for teaching you & bigger thanks to you for sharing with us!! Keep 'em coming! (ADORABLE kitty, BTW!!
So I have watched many, many, MANY videos on how to crochet that type of hat and not a single one really explained it clearly enough. Or showed how they did it clearly. Always talking too fast or having their hands block the view or moving too fast for me to catch. So this video is a blessing really! You explained it so much better than the others and I am happy to have found this video!
I love the hat and plan on making it tonight! I taught myself how to crochet on youtube this fall and made a lot of my gifts for people and now people are ordering woo hoooo!! I have made about $300 in two months!
omg!!! i watched this in 2012 when i was learning to crochet. then i subscribed to threadbanger in 2015 because of their pinter-test stuff. I never realized this was their video till now!!! she looks sooo different!
I just did this!! It took me a hours, but it turned out beautifully, pretty much perfect (in my eyes, lol). And it's only the second time I've crocheted, ever. I had to make a few adjustments, so everyone out there, you shouldn't be scared to deviate a little bit from the instructions. I had to add a few more rows where I skipped the 4th and 5th stitch, to make it tighter on my head. Good luck everyone!
My first was turned out huge, but the yarn I used was too thick. The second one turned out AWESOME! This was my first attempt at making a hat. Thank you for a great tutorial!
Yes. This is the only time that you do a row of 2 sc all around. I think is to allow for a larger increase to the diameter at this point of the project and to prevent curling. Good luck!
You know whats funny? I was watching threadbanger back whe this video first came out, and now in 2012, four years later, I still refer back to this video and it's my very favourite crochet project. I have adapted this hat in may ways to make tons of different hats. The one people seemt o like the most is the "Chez Guevera"-esque military-esque version I do.
Super cute hat, I'm going to get started on one right away! Ps. LOVE the shot of you with your kitty on your chest. Cats do prefer to "supervise" as close to the work as possible.
Yeah I did, I used a K hook vs the 10.5 your recommended. I am just modifying it as I go but I have made 2 now and they end up kinda lumpy, vs smooth. I think from the decreasing on the last rows.out :(. I will keep trying! Thanks
When crocheting in rounds, safety pins REALLY help. I put them on the last stich of evey row so i can keep track of were i start and how many sitches I've done. It helps a bunch trust me!
Yeah, I'd like to know the answer to that question too. I'm making my 2nd hat, (much better than the last one, got a bigger hook!) but I can't tell how big it should be!
After about 14,000 attempts, I think I finally got it. First, she's using a yarn that is about $8.00 (and you'd have to buy 2). So, I found a different yarn that worked just as well. It's Bernat Alpaca natural blends, $4.49 for 120 yards. Second, I skipped the last two rows of increases. Lastly and very important - I was dedicated to marking the beginning of every circle! When you start a new circle, stick a piece of contrasting-color thread in it so u don't overlap and add too much!
I like it to measure about 10 inches in diameter before adding the depth. I think Corrine's might be larger. The number of rows to get to that point will differ depending on the thickness of your yarn, hook size and tension of your stitch. Thick yarn takes less rows, thin yarn takes more. I stop or keep going until I reach 10" diameter then start the depth. My depth including last 2 rows is about 2 inches. Hope that helps!
Finished makíng a hat for my oldest niece similar to crochet hat made by Corrine in the video. I remember watching this video over and over again and this video popped up in my to watch for you page on my RUclips. If thread banger is still around I'll post a pic onto the site and share
I tried making this hat twice and have been crocheting a while now. Both times it came out too big. I modifided the stitches at the end when you finish up,but it would too blousy on the rest of the hat. Maybe since others are having similar issues, their is another way to present the video? I really like the hat!.
I started crocheting because of this video 13 years ago. My hat SUCKED and it didn't fit and wasn't cute because I goofed up the pattern and made some VERY newbie mistakes. Today I have three new commissions for some custom stuffed imp critters with bending arms and little ears and seams and different clothing they can swap around. Thank you, Threadbanger!
:D i tried this and was sooo amazed! normally i can not do things like this, but the only time i messed up on the hat i made was when i thought it would be fun to count in Spanish...
@BetteBea Not really wrong... just different. You can check out my series of Back to basics videos if you are just learning to crochet and see how I do it. You begin by learning a scarf, then you learn a flat circle and then make a tam. once you are that far you can follow along with my other videos and make different things.
Yeah, this video made it so easy! I've never crocheted anything before and my hat turned out looking perfectly so far! Right now I'm actually on the step that says stitch 1=single crochet stitch, stitch 2=single crochet stitch, stitch 3=single crochet stitch, SKIP STITCH 4, and stitch 5=single crochet stitch... I'm actually not sure If you're really supposed to count stitch 5 each time, because then its like 1-4 single crochet, and skip stitch 5.
@Twistedfox It's a single crochet. :) You can tell if you watch very closely in the beginning. She has 1 hoop on her hook and does not wrap around before going through the stitch. When she comes back through- 2 hoops on the hook. If it were double crochet she would wrap first, and there would be 3 hoops on the hook when she first pulls through the stitch. :)
So I didn't use a 10.5 nor a heavy yarn but I just used what I had which was a 5mm stick and regular acrylic yarn. I figure since no ones mentioned it, yeah it's going to be smaller (why some people ended up with tiny beanies) so what you can do is either do double crotchets instead of single crochets and still follow this pattern or you can just keep doing 2 single crochets in holes 13,14,15,etc until the round is the size you want. And then do the single crochets round and round like the pa
Here is the pattern the easy way if anyone wants it. My hat wasn't turning out right until I did it this way. I have now finished three hats! Oops disregard that last message lol anyway I just want to THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS TUTORIAL!!! I crocheted my first lil barret/hat today and i love it!! Im wearing it everyday :) ill also watch u on craftovision. You're the best THANKS AGAIN!
You are too cute personality wise, and you did a good job. you teaching was easy to understand and I liked ur video. I made my first hat, its yellow and I'm giving it to my mom for her bday. I'm also going to make my friend one for her bday. Thanks for making the video
i just finished a hat for my sister, it turned out fairly nicely, it was too wide, so either im going to repeat the last line a few times to get it to the right size or just add a button to the back
Great video! And this is a really easy and fast project. I finished it it one day. Also, I used thinner yarn and a double crochet stitch, which works well too. Thanks!!!!!
Well this was my 1st time crocheting a hat. I have only crocheted a blanket. I like the idea and design, but mine also came out cone shaped from the very begining. I went ahead and continued with the hat anyway, but if you could let us know what we are doing wrong that would be great. Thanks for the ideas and designs. You guys are great!!
If you use bigger hook it will be a bit bigger, but if you wish a hat to be much wider you need more increase. That means for example, instead of double crochet in every fifth stitch you do dc in every fourth. If you wish a hat to have more depth you work additional rows (when you crochet depth, that means in last section when you crochet without increase) hope it helps:)
i love threadbanger and the holidays. but that was some good crocheting it looks like it's nice and toasty. like it's down by the fire place crocheting away. i remember i used to crochet like that too except the hole in the middle was much smaller and and i tried making a hat shape too but it end up like a mitten instead and crochet was my first form of knitting before i practice knitting on my own :D ! ! ! ! !
@Coco23Love Just continue with Corinne's instructions and once you get the the many rows of single crochets you just need to add more so it will have the right depth which you just measure by putting the disk on your head and seeing how far down it goes when you flatten it against the side of your head. It'll still turn out great :)

Also five years later and I'm still using this video for help. Thank you Threadbangers.
11 years later too?
@@be6273 13 years??
14 years later and still my go to beret pattern
Ah this was the first threadbanger video I ever watched back in high school!!!
Your voice is clear and your attitude very expressive, making your instructions a pleasure to follow. Great !

Wooo!!! I finally got done doing this after 2 hours and now have a great present for my grandma!!! Thanks for the awesome tutorial!!
Corinne, your voice sounds so different from your current videos!
10 years later I’m using this video to learn! Thanks threadbanger! Love you guys!!!
the hat looks awesome but it'll be better if there's a written pattern
Today I remembered when this video was posted and Corinne taught us how to crochet. It was my first project. I can't believe it was 15 years ago 🥲
I'm confused. Begginning, yada yada, 2 single in stitch 4. Then single all the way? Or 2 single all the way?
ROB 'n' CORINNE, together on an episode again! Yeah, baby! You just made my Christmas a whole lot merrier!

@BecomingViola see above.
Thanks!
What do you mean with number 8
I mean 10
Excellent video, I will definitely try this pattern, especially as it's such a quick item to make. As you said...perfect for holiday gifts. Much love.

HELLO BEVERLY, HOW ARE YOU 👋👋
I have made 3 hats, and each time it becomes better and better. The last one is perfect. I love it.
Thank you so much. Just finished this project. I love that it fits my HUGE head and it only took a couple of hours to knock out. Love your channel!
You are so adorable! I'm a seasoned crocheter, and I say rock on crochet sis! Very clear directions, great visuals! I'm making this hat!
I just made this hat and love it! One thing I did extra was added a double crochet all the way around to make it look more finished.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I have tried to crochet about 5 hats and non of them have turned out good at all. I was able to crochet this hat perfectly. Thank you again!

Corinne-
You are ADORABLE!!!
I really like this hat pattern, it's the first actual crochet project I attempted and it came out great.
So I have watched many, many, MANY videos on how to crochet that type of hat and not a single one really explained it clearly enough. Or showed how they did it clearly. Always talking too fast or having their hands block the view or moving too fast for me to catch. So this video is a blessing really! This brings back such memories, I watched this when I was 7 when my grandma was teaching me how to knit.
I love the hat and plan on making it tonight! I taught myself how to crochet on youtube this fall and made a lot of my gifts for people and now people are ordering woo hoooo!! I have made about $300 in two months!
OMG it is so easy... i swear to god... i LOVE IT.. the best tutorial ever... dont stop & keep going!!!
omg!!! i watched this in 2012 when i was learning to crochet. then i subscribed to threadbanger in 2015 because of their pinter-test stuff.
I've never been able to crotchet anything before. You're video was VERY helpful and I made a hat because of you :) Thanks!
@ilovenemo171 She went fast because it's for people who already know how to crochet. There's a link to the how to crochet video at the begining
My first was turned out huge, but the yarn I used was too thick. The second one turned out AWESOME! This was my first attempt at making a hat. Thank you for a great tutorial!
@BetteBea If you look closely, you can see the line left behind from the back loops.
HELLO BETH, HOW ARE YOU 👋👋
Yes. This is the only time that you do a row of 2 sc all around. I think is to allow for a larger increase to the diameter at this point of the project and to prevent curling. Good luck!
Woo hoo!! Finally got it. My hat looks great. Thank you Threadbangers for doing this!!

Literally the first thing I've ever made....and it came out brilliantly!!! Thank you!!!
Thanks to your video, I just finished crocheting my first hat. Thanks so much!
Super cute hat, I'm going to get started on one right away!
Ps. LOVE the shot of you with your kitty on your chest. Cats do prefer to "supervise" as close to the work as possible.
now this is one of the good original videos
I have made four of these hats and they are lovely. Thanks for your tutorial.
OMG! I have looked everywhere for this tutorial! I used to have it on my ipod and was desperate to find it again to make another one :D
HELLO HEATHER, HOW ARE YOU 👋👋
Corinne, you're a goddess!!! I
Yeah I did, I used a K hook vs the 10.5 your recommended. I am just modifying it as I go but I have made 2 now and they end up kinda lumpy, vs smooth. I think from the decreasing on the last rows.out :(. I will keep trying! Thanks
I've just made a crochet hat !!! Thank you so much for this easy tutorial I LOVE MY HAT !!!!!!
I loved the outcome! I made one in purple and I wear it every time I wear a purple shirt!
YAY!!! I made my first decent looking beret! I used an H/8.
Tracyarts suggestions made it a bit easier.
I really appreciate this video. Thanks!!!
I watched almost halfway through this video before I remembered I don't know a single thing about crocheting or knitting. It's so hypnotizing
this is the first crochet hat i ever finished! thank you!
Depends on the yarn you re using. Recommended size of a hook should be given by manufacturer. I used 3 and 4,5 mm and turned out perfect.
that is great to hear ! wow you are HOOKED (parden the pun) on crochet ...keep it up !
I absolutely love love love my hat you made the video so easy to understand you did a good job
Today I have three new commissions for some custom stuffed imp critters with bending arms and little ears and seams and different clothing they can swap around.
Thank you, Threadbanger!
this was the best tutorial ever! i made two already, they are adorable!
:D i tried this and was sooo amazed! normally i can not do things like this, but the only time i messed up on the hat i made was when i thought it would be fun to count in Spanish...
esta muy bueno el video!! siempre fue un misterio para mi esos aumentos que haces! exelente aporte ustedes dos! gracias..
@lolleys How lucky am I that the day I come back to write the instructions down to try it this weekend, you already did it? Thanks a ton!!!
And then do the single crochets round and round like the pa
that hat is very cute.. im going to try making one this winter break. happy holidays
I miss this tread bangers and not the new ones
This is ythey type I hat I want to make. I'm so happy that you made this video!
Here is the pattern the easy way if anyone wants it. My hat wasn't turning out right until I did it this way. I have now finished three hats! I am doing this in several posts bc it's too many characters.
Threadbanger Crochet Hat
Slip knot + chain 8
1. Connect 2 ends and do single crochet (I recommend using a stitch marker like a bobby pin on the first stitch for easy reference later-move the pin up to your new row as you come back to it each time)
Thank you so much for your video I have now finished my first hat!!!!! It looks great...thank you!!!! Happy Crochet

You are too cute personality wise, and you did a good job. you teaching was easy to understand and I liked ur video. I made my first hat, its yellow and I'm giving it to my mom for her bday. I'm also going to make my friend one for her bday. Thanks for making the video
i just finished a hat for my sister, it turned out fairly nicely, it was too wide, so either im going to repeat the last line a few times to get it to the right size or just add a button to the back
Great vidtut, I am sooo making one for my sister. Thanks Corinne and Happy Holidays to you, too.
Great video! And this is a really easy and fast project. I finished it it one day. Also, I used thinner yarn and a double crochet stitch, which works well too. Thanks!!!!!
Glad to find you-guys! Love your vids and the projects. Looking forward to following. Cheers!
And the first hat of the season has been completed.. thank you!
wow i love the way you teach us toooooooo crochet i used to not like to crochet beacuse it was hard but know i love to crochet thankyou
@Coco23Love Just continue with Corinne's instructions and once you get the the many rows of single crochets you just need to add more so it will have the right depth which you just measure by putting the disk on your head and seeing how far down it goes when you flatten it against the side of your head. It'll still turn out great :)
HELLO NICOLE, HOW ARE YOU 👋👋
