Hey everyone! Quick FYI, I added detailed chapters in the video description so you can quickly jump around through the different audio examples. After checking out the video, let me know your thoughts on these mics! 🤘
Thanks for this great comparison Jeremy. I prefered the warmth of the SE mostly when I heard the raw and isolated sound, great to avoid bleed from the kick and other elements too, but when mixed the Lauten and the Telefunken had also advantages of being brigher mics.
For me, I prefer the Lauren Audio Snare Mic in most cases. The off-axis cancelation is great and its sound lands right in the middle between the sE and Telefunken regarding brightness. The sE is fairly dark and the Telefunken is super bright. All of them have their place and if you have multiple, I’d recommend using them all and blending them together to get the best parts of each. Hope that helps.
good video.. especially because you show with and without processing. I have 3 v7x I used for all kind of things. Snare is one of them.. and toms. Great for toms. I used to have a M80 but its lack of beef made me stop using it. The snare mic I dont have but also dont need. I got Slate ML-2 for that. And the bleed is clearly best with v7x which is one of my most important features on a snare mic. Also the dynamics seem a tad better on the sE. The snare mic is kind of precompressing it.. it sounds like it does. So v7x (still) for me (But I have an array of snare mics, so its just one of them )
I felt like the Lauten snare mic and the telefunken sounded better processed but I’m also listening on the phone. Need to rewatch this in the studio and download the samples and listen to them. Great video! 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks dude! Both the Lauren Audio and Telefunken seems to pickup a good bit more top-end, which really comes through when processed. It can actually result in a good bit more cymbal bleed that needs to be addressed when heavily compressing the snare. Regardless, they’re all fantastic and have really nice unique characteristics that I plan on using together in future sessions. 🤘
What were the other mics that you were using on your full kit, my pic for the snare is Telefunken m80 first, Lauten Snare second and the SE third! Even when raw the Telefunken had a more natural sound and eliminated that ringing in the upper mids and lower highs nothing drives me more crazy than to have that constant ringing in my IEMS because I get a "MIND SPLITTING HEADACHE" about 2hrs into the gig! I would love to hear these mics on both the top and bottom of the snare because it gives it more depth!
The other mics are mainly sE Electronics mics from their arena pack. So the V Kick, V Beat (on toms), V7 X (one of the snare mics), and a pair of sE8 on overheads. I also use an AKG C314 and Subkick on the kick drum. Both are outside of the kick and pulled back 8” or so.
All sound good and would work, but SE for its ability to isolate rhe sound source youre trying to capture for me. Has the least bleed and that's important for mixing punchy sounding drums.
It definitely has a really nice top-end to it. However, while mixing these tracks for the video, it took a little more effort to remove the cymbal bleed from the M80. Still an incredible mic and will absolutely use it on snare in the future. Just wanted to point that out as a consideration for anyone else who might be interested in using it one drum recordings. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!
The Discord invite link is broken, I tried to join but couldn't. Otherwise great video and I'm excited to download the snare samples, I've been struggling getting my snares to sound good so maybe this can help.
Great fucking video! I was wondering if you've tried Silencer from Black Salt Audio? It has revolutionized the way I track drums. Its also a super inexpensive plugin with very easy controls. Its let me really crank the top end on my M80 without worrying about cymbal bleed.
I haven’t tried it but I’ve heard good things. I’ve got a pretty good system going for de-bleeding (which I didn’t use in this video) but I might have to give Silencer a try one of these days.

This is how every mic comparison should be made!! 👍🏼
Which would you recommend overall?

telefunken sounded the best immediately

Disappointed you didn't throw an SM57 in there for comparison. Thanks! :)
Sorry. I thought about that after recording this. Totally should have. Next time!

Thanks for letting me know. Give this one a try: discord.gg/6Q954nxU
