Well it depends on what this desktop environment you're using, if you're using icewm like I was using you have to use a program called idesk but after a while I wanted something slightly more modern so I gave up and installed xfce
This works on all desktop environments. If Firefox is not in the start menu you can add it to the menu yourself. Or create a shortcut to it on your desktop. It's easy to do.
