My Great Grandfather was the FIRST ever policeman in Robin Hood's Bay! He was sent there to stamp out the smuggling in around 1890. His house (The Old Police Station) appears at 1:23. A lot of the stuff he confiscated is in the Smuggling Museum at the top of the hill near the top car park. Glad you enjoyed your visit, it's certainly a quirky little place.
Yes me too, I love the yorkshire coastline many happy holidays I have had there, I do miss the tree walk In peasholm park shame when they removed all the things In It
I’m from Manchester and live in the states and in 2019 showed an American friend around England and Wales and made sure to include Yorkshire as one of the places we visited as it’s so beautiful and should not be overlooked.
As a photographer i have always loved Yorkshire. It's beautiful landscapes, pretty villages and lots of history. Robin Hood's Bay, Whitby, York, Brimham Rocks, Malham Cove, Ingleton Waterfalls Trail, Fountains Abbey and i could go on and on, a truly wonderful part of the UK.
I lived York as a teen and when I was about 14 we did a week long school geography trip in that area. Every day we would get dropped off somewhere random in small groups with a packed lunch and we’d have to make our way to a specific destination completing tasks on the way. Robin Hoods Bay was one of the destinations. The weather was gorgeous all week, we had a boom box with Guns and Roses on cassette for entertainment on our hikes. Life was sweet 😄
I can't believe you have just showed me robin hood bay, my dad passed away when i was 11 and we went on a holiday (robin hood bay) but i couldn't remember where it was. I thought it was somewhere in wales, ive googled and googled for years to find out to take my kids now i know, thank you so much. I can't wait to go!
Captain Cook was one of the most famous and important adventurers the world has known. He was apprenticed in Whitby - it was where he learned the seafaring craft over three years . He discovered Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii among many other exotic locations. Although his main house was in Beverley, my grandfather had a second home in Robin Hood's Bay (West Quarter). In her giddy youth in the 1940s my mother remembered having a lift up and down the hill on a motorcycle... I love Whitby too. With friends we've rented a house in the winter. When the fog rolls in it's gloriously spooky. Remember that both Bram Stoker (Dracula) and Lewis Carroll ( Alice in Wonderland) stayed on West Cliff. ( The 'Walrus and the Carpenter' is based on the beach at Whitby.) I find the Church at the top of steps more interesting than the Abbey. It is older (c.1100) and has a rarely-preserved 18th-century interior, with the old-fashioned box pews. A gem few see is Whitby Museum. They've deliberately kept it old-fashioned, and it has a wonderful collection of model ships. A great band of Jurassic rocks cross England, and form the cliffs at Whitby. They are highly fossiliferous, which is why the ammonites are a symbol of Whitby. ( It's not usually realised that many creatures became extinct at the same time as the dinosaurs; ammonites did too - they are a fossil cephalopod.) A coal-like substance hardened into 'jet', which has been used as jewellery. I've also seen a dinosaur footprint nearby. But be careful round the cliffs. In the Ice Ages, great ice sheets from Scandinavia came across the North Sea; so the tops of the cliffs and the gaps in the Jurassic rocks are filled with the muck the ice sheets brought, and it's unstable!
Another recommendation to visit Staithes, Captain Cook was born and raised in Marton (now part of Middlesbrough), the house he was born in was dismantled brick by brick and sent to Australia and rebuilt there, which was our loss, he went to school at Great Ayton a few miles away and then started his employment in Staithes before moving to Whitby.
You seem to love North Yorkshire, you should visit Staithes, another stunning coastal inlet, and, I'm surprised you haven't travelled the North York Moors steam railway to Pickering, the heart of the national park, within that area also visit Thornton le Dale, a beautiful village! Love your tours around my county.
I live in Lancashire, but my brother lives in North Yorkshire. I get up to the Whitby area as often as I can. Beautiful area. So great seeing you guys posting videos from across our lovely little island.
Another go to place by the sea is Tenby in Wales. There's another really nice place about an hours drive from Tenby called St David's. I believe its the smallest city in the UK, probably not even 2000 people live there. Lots of beautiful scenery
I have walked from Staithes to Whitby and back again when I was there for a school trip for a week in the summer of 1983. It is one of my most cherished memories and the walk was really fun.
I’m a bit ashamed. I’m 63, born and lived in Yorkshire all my life, and have never been to Robin Hoods Bay. I’ve been to Whitby and love it but I’m definitely going to go to RHB now. It looks beautiful . Glad you loved it. Xx
I've gone through some really sad and dark times of late. But your videos always cheer me up. Just reminds me how blessed I am to live in Yorkshire. I'll be really sad when you guys have to go back home 😢
I'm an American who lived in the UK for two years and still visit regularly. I lived a short distance from london when I lived in the UK because of my job, and I've had my fill of that area. When I visit the UK now, I fly into Manchester, pick up my car, and then I'm off to Yorkshire. It's the most beautiful part of the country as far as I'm concerned, and it's the area my family immigrated from eons back, so I kind of feel like I'm coming home. The people are very nice as well, so that's another plus. You're blessed to live in such a beautiful place.
Oh my! I used to live a few doors along from your holiday let there back in the late '60s. Brings back lots of memories. RHB certainly is a unique place and well worth a stay.
Had a holiday in the Yorkshire dales it certainly opened my mind to it's totally difference from where I live in Hampshire. It was almost like a different country.there is so much to see and enjoy.
Hello the three of you. A great trip from Whitby to Pickering along one the finest scenic heritage railways called the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR). You might recognize a station from many TV programmes and films. The trains they run ade usually famous old British steam engines. Bram Stoker wrote Dracula with many influences from Whitby and its abbey after holidaying in Whitby.
I have seen lots of Americas doing the UK think, and you are by far the best. Entertaining and respectful. I have to say though as a Yorkshireman. You don't need curry sauce on good fish and chips. Just salt and vinegar, Ha Ha. Every one to their own taste.
I'm an American who lived in the UK for two years and still visit regularly. I love the UK particularly Yorkshire, its where my family immigrated from eons ago, so it feels like coming home in a way. As far as fish and chips go, I like mine with mushy peas and curry, but also gravy. I had never eaten fish and chips with gravy until I went to Yorkshire, now I'm hooked. You're blessed to live in such a beautiful country.
I live in Yorkshire & love the Yorkshire coast & have enjoyed your videos of your travels around Yorkshire especially, the seaside towns are very popular British thing to do 😀👍
Love RHB. Spent many long weekends there, especially in the winter months when it's a little quieter. Not the same since the Ye Olde Dolphin pub closed though 😢. Hoping it reopens soon.
I was so surprised to see you both whilst i was on holiday last week:) hope you didn't think i was too crazy but just had to say hello. happy exploring to you both.
Im not too far from Whitby and RHB, visited so many times, the 199 steps have now been engraved with roman numerals every 10 steps to aid with the counting (fun fact) but used to be such a challenge to count correctly as you rise to the top , great video and camara work so pleased you enjoyed our coastline up here!
It’s always busy in the school holidays. I’ve been to Robin hoods bay many times, it’s not always busy, and when the sea is out it feel less busy as a lot of people are on the beach. Early mornings and evenings are also good times to visit, if your able to do that you will have a quieter experience. Great video again😊
When you see these programs it really makes me appreciate what a beautiful area i live in ❤P.S im extremely jealous right now, fish n chips and a lemon top 🤤😋
Hi guys , we've spent many happy days there . The coast to coast walk starts at St Bees ,Cumbria, and finishes when you walk to the sea, and throw a pebble into the sea. Then Post Office will give you a certificate to say you did it! Get a fridge magnet. You can take the dog in Wainrights. Xx
Looks like the three of you had a lovely holiday. Having walked the coast to coast path I can confirm Robin Hoods bay is a gem. Richmond is also worth a visit. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Probably my favourite place in the world but ill never be able to visit again, i lost a leg 3 years ago, and there is no way i could expect anyine to push me around there in my wheelchair and i dont have the arm strength to do it myself any more. If im lucky enough to be able to walk again after getting myself a prosthetic leg,it could ve a possibility, but the way my other leg is, i doubt it. Its a shame, i love robin hoods bay. And whitby. Beautiful, relaxing places. Would if retired there if things had been different. Lovely video.
I am from Sheffield, Yorkshire and Whitby is a lovely place,The goth weekend is well worth a visit,I enjoy your vids, nice to see USA people appreciate my country ,keep going.
Thank you, I really enjoy your videos and the enthusiasm you both have for each place you visit. I think it sounds like Whitby has a special place in your heart. I loved seeing Carly enjoying herself on the beech at Robin Hood's Bay and making friends too. St. Bees in Cumbria is the start of The Coast to Coast and covers many miles, different types of terrain and beautiful scenery a long the way.
Great walk to Ravenscar from Robin Hoods Bay, interesting industrial archaeology above and on the beaches. Alternative destination is Staithes further to the north, like RobinHoods Bay but less busy.
You should really go to Whitby for the goth festival. Amazing to see so many people walking round the place in old gothic clothing, and horror themed clothing too
My favourite place along the Yorkshire Coast is Scarborough, absolutely love it ❤. I am so pleased that you are enjoying the beautiful northern coast x
Staithes is also a beautiful village a nit further up from Whitby. Also, Daniel Day Lewis filmed scenes for his last film - Phantom Thread - in the Victoria Hotel in Robin Hood's Bay.
Not sure if someone has commented already. The little beach you saw in Whitby was Tate Hill Beach. This is the same beach that Dracula came to shore on in the book 🧛♂️ I live in Whitby and probably like anyone in any town/city we just take it all for granted. So it's always refreshing to see it through the eyes of a visitor.
Yorkshire is my favorite place to be. Been on holiday a lot and never disappointed. Always be a special place for me. The best place to be for fossils in half a mile down the cost towards Robin Hood’s bay. Their is a Bay that you can only access via a caravan park. It’s a bit tricky with just a narrow path down to the bay. But guaranteed fossils.
Ahh Yorkshire, why did we ever move away! Runswick Bay is another lovely place to visit nearby. Northumberland has beautiful beaches too if you fancy a visit.
I just loved Robin Hood Bay and Whitbey and had never heard of either. Thank you for ithe wonderful tour and info!❤❤ I am now craving that fish and chips! Looks so tasty😋 Going to be hard to find in the Chicago area!
I grew up in North Yorkshire, not far from Whitby, and love the excellent fish & chips especially from the Magpie cafe. I would just like to say OUT LOUD that putting curry sauce on high quality f&c is sacrilege! Salt and vinegar and maybe some mushy peas are all you need.
Hey my wife walked the coast to coast and the deal is that you have to get your feet wet at each end. Luckily the tide was out at Robin Hood's Bay and she was planning to go fully in but the water was apparently freezing! Great tour you did there 👍👍
I’ve been to Whitby once last year! It was amazing, coming from London and seeing the sea and the buildings around Whitby has set my heart on moving there and retiring ❤❤❤❤
You hit the nail on the head, i think if you're by the seaside/somewhere with active fishermen, then any of the local fish and chip places are more than likely to be good. The big problem is how a chippy dinner, which used to be something really cheap, has skyrocketed in price and now my local is over £13 for a cod and chips!
Love the video hope you're enjoying your visits everywhere, if you're ever in Dorset you must try a lovely gorgeous little village called BEER and yes that's how it's spelt. You'd have a fab time
Love all of your videos from the UK, If you get chance whilst here see if you can go to Wales, in particular Tenby, lovely place to explore. Keep making these😊
Great video as always. You're starting to sound very British with the reference to the "chippy". You can't beat a nice portion of fish and chips with curry sauce ! Keep up the great work guys , your videos never disappoint.
Cinder toffee is basically sugar & syrup (honey also works) heated to point where its melting and colour starting to turn but not quite caramelising. Drop in some sodium bicarbonate and stir as it bubbles up. While it's still bubbling up pour into a greased tray and leave to cool. Silicon baking tray makes breaking it up easier and make sure to store in an airtight tub so it doesn't go soggy and melt.
They used to carry the coffins up the 199 steps to be buried in St Mary's Churchyard. It is really strange to see the lace of my childhood be seen through a new set of eyes. Bay Town (Robin Hoods Bay) was always a favourite and yes I have driven down the hill to the bottom to pick up/deliver stuff to the bottom. This was many years ago and even then out of season. Glad you enjoy my home area so much!
Where you stayed in Robin Hood's Bay, we were there a few weeks back. Facing your accommodation, we stayed in a house just a couple yards over to the right, on the top of the cliff. Absolutely beautiful views! Also, badgers wandering around in the garden at dusk. Lovely area ❤❤
Really enjoyed this. We are going to Whitby in a couple of weeks as we do every year and so glad you love it so much. We live in Yorkshire but having lived in Devon and Somerset also we appreciate your channel so much as it's nice to see someone appreciate the many different aspects of the UK. Look forward to seeing your next adventure and travel safely on your journeys.
I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay (and to Whitby previously (I love Whitby so much)). So many visitors just 'Do London' and think that's everything the UK has to offer. There's so much beauty here and it's so appreciated when tourists stray from the standard 'doing UK' checklist. You mentioned that there isn't a whole lot to do there, and that's absolutely true - Places like Robin Hood's Bay, though obviously geared towards tourists, aim to preserve their beauty rather than overly commercialise it with visitors centres or theme parks... The beauty of the place is enough. Sit down, get some fish and chips, look out to sea, take a deep breath and just... relax. There's no abundance of neon signs vying for your attention - It is what it is. Enjoy x BTW, Have you visited Scotland and Wales yet?
Ah, love the North Yorkshire Coast. It is so interesting for the Jurassic geology and palaeontology there. And it's very scenic, there is that, too. Runswick Bay is a must see.
I have been a regular visitor to RHB for decades now. Obviously one of my favourite places as it's only 1.5 hours drive from home in East Yorkshire. ! Next time you go, take a walk to Boggle Hole at low tide. Also, you should check out Staithes and of course, Whitby
I love that you're experiencing the real UK not just London
London, by the very fact that it is the capital city, is definitely "the real UK" too.

I hope you go to Staiths, it's nearby and a famous person worked and lived there
A famous person! Wow!
I just loved Robin Hood Bay and Whitbey and had never heard of either. Thank you for ithe wonderful tour and info!❤❤
I am now craving that fish and chips! Looks so tasty😋
Going to be hard to find in the Chicago area!
I think your videos are entertaining and enlightening as where to visit in UK.Keep up the good work all the best
So nice of you
I grew up in North Yorkshire, not far from Whitby, and love the excellent fish & chips especially from the Magpie cafe. I would just like to say OUT LOUD that putting curry sauce on high quality f&c is sacrilege! Salt and vinegar and maybe some mushy peas are all you need.
I was thinking that about curry sauce vs salt and vinegar. Also, I don't know why they called it Irish curry sauce before - anyone else know?
Just found you on you tube and you are all delightful xx love your doggy too!!! X I'm subscribed to you xx keep up the good work!! X
Would recommend Eskdale Fisheries in Sleights, a village just outside Whitby. Does great fish and chips.
We'll have to try that.
You'd have a fab time
Thank you for watching!
Love all of your videos from the UK, If you get chance whilst here see if you can go to Wales, in particular Tenby, lovely place to explore.
Keep making these😊
The walk back up the hill never gets easier. Love seeing you enjoy your UK experiences.
I just love travelling with you. ❤
It's nice to see others appreciate our beautiful country & it is nice to be reminded of how lovely it is outside London.
If you get further up the coast, visit HMS Trincomalee at the historic dock. It’s a Napoleonic era frigate ( sailing ship).
It's lovely at Robin Hoods Bay but the walk back up is not easy lol x
That last bit going up is kind of a lot. 😂
Love watching your videos
Love your channel and content. Keep the great videos.
So glad you are having a great holiday here in the UK! Love your videos.
So glad you enjoy Yorkshire, although I was born down south, I've lived in "god's own country" for 58 years and can't imagine living anywhere else 🤗
My friend stayed there last year. The village’s former police station is now an Airbnb and you can still see where the prison cell used to be!
I love your videos and am so happy that you like our country so much. So thankyou and love to you both and your sweet dog. ❤❤
Thank you so much!
Have you been to Scarborough or a little further there is Beverley
They used to carry the coffins up the 199 steps to be buried in St Mary's Churchyard.
It is really strange to see the lace of my childhood be seen through a new set of eyes. Bay Town (Robin Hoods Bay) was always a favourite and yes I have driven down the hill to the bottom to pick up/deliver stuff to the bottom. This was many years ago and even then out of season.
Glad you enjoy my home area so much!
the benches on 199 steps are where the pall bearers would place the coffins when they needed a breather.
A beautiful place. Glad you enjoyed it.
Love all your videos. Of all the places you have visited in the UK if you relocated here, which one would you choose to live in? Just love Carly.
Enjoy x
BTW, Have you visited Scotland and Wales yet?
Robin Hoods Bay looks lovely. Might have to drive over at some point
Beautiful area, my children were boarders at Flying Hall School situated overlooking Robin Hood's Bay.
My childhood holidays right there in a nutshell !
I love you guys & of course, Carly! ❤️❤️❤️
Ah, love the North Yorkshire Coast. It is so interesting for the Jurassic geology and palaeontology there. And it's very scenic, there is that, too. Runswick Bay is a must see.
Top place to visit. Here's to Wainwright.
It was lovely!
I have been a regular visitor to RHB for decades now. Obviously one of my favourite places as it's only 1.5 hours drive from home in East Yorkshire. ! Next time you go, take a walk to Boggle Hole at low tide. Also, you should check out Staithes and of course, Whitby
The beach at Boggle Hole is stunning, as is the view walking down to it.
