  • In this video, Kenneth Serrao, Venture Capitalist, Founder & CIO at Alpha Capital Advisors Private Limited, IIM A Alum, talk about b - school, work culture and what really matters even decades after your MBA.
    Summary
If you think that an MBA will give you a leg up, you’re right. But beware, because many MBA graduates end up in mediocre jobs, making even less than a well-paid maid. In this video, Kenneth paints the reality of doing an MBA.
He shares how after a decade or so, your degree may become redundant. He talks about how placements are not the be and end all at b - school. He shares how the most important skill you need to pick up is communication. He talks about how every job becomes a sales job after some years. With anecdotes on financial markets, he shares his tales of studying at IIM A, and how excellence is a learned quality. He talks about putting your head down and working hard during your years at b - school because hard work pays. Finally, Ken talks about humility and figuring out what career path one can take.
If you’re curious about how an MBA graduate thinks, acts and believes, even 20 years after graduation, this is a must watch for you.
    Key Takeaways
When at b - school, you need to put your head down and study. You need to focus on your academics in order to get the best out of b - school.
After a point, all jobs involve some kind of sales skills.
Communication is an important skill to learn, no matter what job you’re in.
Doing an MBA after some work experience may be more impactful.
No matter where you are, your attitude matters.

Ya right. I don't understand what kind of a stupid comparison he drew ?! Like a maid is a maid and a taxi driver( usually ) is one bcoz of their family's social cadre. They're the underprivileged people. MBAs are learned and graduated people with pretty decent soft skills. Why would they want to look up to a job like those of servants or taxi drivers, just for money, when they actually got much better education, opportunities and trainings and skill set-ups ? Ofcourse nobody who's a postgraduate would do that. Then why even compare ? Nonsense 😅

The best line of this entire video is "I rarely meet people who really worked hard for something and didn't get it."
This tells us that people actually don't work wholeheartedly for something and later say "Oh I also wanted to do that thing but unfortunately couldn't do it." The "Unfortunately" is used by them just to hide their lack of work and devotion towards that thing.

Only only if I had learnt that every thing eventually turns out to be sales. This jolted me a bit, but barring research, every job and venture requires story telling skills. Unsure if introverts can actually go out and pitch themselves or even sell stories. I am quite sure one needs to realise this sooner or later. Again, a very insightful video.

I am from a tier 3 Bschool so May be a a little rattled by his statement but hey what he said there doesn’t hold much water. Tier 3 Bschool grads if continue to work harder at their jobs, can grow a lot provided they keep working harder to bridge the gap between them and their Top tier Bschool colleagues/bosses. What the guest says after that makes a lot of sense.

Well he is getting a lot of flak because he said that some skills are low levels. He is not wrong. We Indians, specially engineers put in a lot of emphasis on technical skills without understanding the need for soft skills. Telling a story, making strong relationships, finding reliable business partners, selling a product are equally important, if not more. The success of a business venture depends more on soft skills of the founders, more than the technical abilities.
As a person who started his own successful business he understands this.
and please don't be cocky. Every skill that is hyped as the new gold mine of opportunities, is eventually made insignificant by the next wave of technologies. Most of the trading jobs in top wall street banks, which were hyped 20 years back have vanished and are replaced by algorithms. If any skill can be taught to you, then obviously an AI can be trained to do exactly what you do.
The future will belong to knowledge workers, who are specialised in some domain in such a way that his job can't be taught. If I somebody can sit at home and gain a skill by following online modules, then probably it is a not high level skill.

Its fine with most of his opinions on pursuing an MBA career and start making business models at the end of the term but there are also some realities related to this mediocrity mindset of seeing and following a make believe perception of higher studies after graduation...in any stream...
Why does the govt. can't promote the field of basic sciences like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology in the grassroots level and as such....a very infinitesimal amount of budget is allotted attributing to the scope and promotion of basic sciences in R&D sector. Now a days, an engineer turned MBA graduate from the A list institutes is like presenting the person in a way...what the mass market demands from that person....While this very trend gradually keeps moving the person to that new direction or what we call in popular term " THE NEXT BIG THING "....while the basic foundations of an engineer or B.Sc / M.Sc student is the actual basic science concepts and theories that mould the student into an engg. graduate....
This leads to the reality that none of the IITs or IIMs rank in the top 100 universities in the world in respect to any discipline...that there is no world class research papers, patents, any path breaking technology have come up out of this very educational system....I think being a founder of some new world class technology is way more above and satisfying than being some CEO who by default have to follow the market in order to keep up to his reputation....
Why can't the govt. or the private entities can't promote the basic sciences field in the same way as in the case of MBA, marketing, finance etc...

When you can't code, then say that management and sales are the greatest profession in the world and Coding is low skill 😂

half of MBAs work under a company that is based on coding only. Y'all be going after amazon and they pay more to the tech guys than those of graduated from iims

From where do you get such misconceptions man?😂 Amazon will pay triple the amount of money to their managers even though they work one-third as much as the tech grads.

@@chayanikagoswami6893 lol do some research if you want. Big companies now are saving their money by not even hiring such mbas since the whole mba work is getting automated by machines which again are done by tech grads. Risk managers themselves know how technology is being implemented in credit or investment risk making the manpower go down. Companies don't even need HRs to hold interviews and filter out the candidates.

See what he meant to say is that AI is taking up all the skills that we professionals possess. But tackling with human emotions and empathizing with their needs is the last field where robotics will ever reach. The mechanical jobs that we're doing might as well be taken up by AI very soon. So now we know in which direction do we need to head.
