as a filipino american, i love how us filipinos made a lot of people think that the karambit came from p.i. (philippine island), even filipino ourselves, when it actually came from west sumatra, indonesia. us filipinos just popularized them
Yeah, they’re most def Indonesian. I think your getting confused with the balisongs aka butterfly knives. Filipinos popularized those. They’re from the Philippines historically
@@Dieafreak oh yeah, i'm well aware that us filipinos made the balisong is made famous by us, as someone who loves knives and loves collecting knives, mainy with D2 steel, Cr5 and Cr8 and other similar steel blades like those.
Glad to have you in the usa. I've been to p.i and it was beautiful and the people were very kind and fun❤
@@glowindark64 I've been there too
As an Indonesian, thank you for recognising the origin of Karambit or how we spelled it in Indonesian Kerambit. Once again salamat, kuya.
Man what an absolute pleasure it was to listen to someone with so much self-defense knowledge
You guys should do more themed content like this. Explore different subject matter. Hunting fishing self defense bushcraft hiking so on.
There was one on camping and it was weak.
Dad knife, house knife.
Patrick is a very good teacher and mentor for my son. He has given alot of his time for free to teach women how to defend and empower themselves. He is a wealth of knowledge. The three qualities I look for in a teacher are humilty, honesty and gratitude. He has all three. Thank you Patrick and Blade HQ for this video.
I really like this guys demeanor and his explanations. He’s not a “kill ‘em all and let God sort them out type persona.
Wow Patrick is extremely well spoken and very intelligent. He as very articulate in his explanations and clearly has an immense amount of knowledge and experience. Love this video!
George displays such a common human reaction after he serves as a human dummy for the knife work by crossing his arms and legs to protect himself. He just shouted his vulnerability and showed us that the nice guy vibe is not an act. George, you are the kind of men I want as my neighbour.
Bro, that's one of the kindest things I've ever heard. I'd love to have you as my neighbor too! -George
A Fox Karambit with the wave saved me from being robbed right before Christmas. I saw the guy creeping up on me and still with my nervous energy I just grabbed the ring pulled and you heard that "Click" loud and clear. I also grabbed my Streamlight. The guy turned around and ran.
I was a combatives instructor in the Army. I have been a martial science instructor since I was 15. I teach my students to do exactly what you mentioned in that, even though I had a 4000 square foot school, we trained all the time in the parking lot between cars. We also wore sneakers, boots and the women (that regularly wore them), wore high heels.
It is rare that you will get attacked in a huge open space with comfortable clothes and choreographed attacks.
Very interesting video and the best one you've put out in a very long time ... I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Patrick is awesome and highly knowledgeable in all aspects of combat training!
Appreciate these types of videos, I hate when knife snobs immediately call something mall ninja if you even mention self defense with a knife
How the hell are we supposed to know the design or what they look like if you dont show chose ups? Shame, such an awesome collection and its impossible to see any detail.
This is just a video for themselves. Lol.
Bastenelli is something else. I have so many "self defense" knives as a martial arts instructor, but Bastien Coves stuff has slowly become my favorite.
That’s Patrick Odle of Modern Civilian Combat. I’ve attended 5 of his seminars for Mastro Defense System and Kali. He’s a wealth of information!
I have to say, I was surprised that when speaking of defensive blades, there was no mention of the Spyderco Yojimbo or maybe the Cannis. Still love the video. Gave me a lot to think about.
When you go to fighting and instead of a punch you're getting opened up an inch deep or so it'll make you jump back and rethink the situation right quick. As in the small knife talked about first. It's amazing what a small blade like that can do
As he's showing techniques for attacking the face, as someone who has been in quite a few scraps let me tell you that it takes very little to make the face bleed. Anywhere on the face bleeds HEAVILY. I once got the outside corner of my eye split open by just a mm and that entire side of my face was covered in blood and the eyelid had to get stitched back up. It's very brutal.
Can't go wrong with Patrick Odle. Such a great instructor, I learned so much from him.
Take that class and film that class. Well done and bring Patrick back
Love learning about the history and purposes of all the different blade shapes
For me this was the best video I've ever seen from you! Thank you very informative!!
Wow ive been wanting video like this thanks
Wow!! Seriously amazing video. Loved the explanation and demonstrations from the self-defense point of view! More content like this, please!!!
I carry two knives on duty which are only there for defensive purposes. Fox 479 on the right and Microtech Dirac delta on the left
That man has a fountain of knowledge that I want!
This is one of the best videos ive seen. This guy is very informative and has alot of knowledge and skill. Thanks for showing.
Great presentation, very enjoyable and informative interview.
Great video, just ordered a manix 2 in s30v so this was cool to see. You really went all out 😂 we appreciate the hustle ❤
Great vid Blade HQ. Should have more of Patrick in future vid. Cheers from Australia.
The calm, slow, soft demeanor of that man tells you he is one bad mofo.
100%. as cheesy as it sounds, thats a huge thing that separates a truly skilled and dangerous individual from the ones that just want to give the impression that they're a skilled and dangerous individual.
Where the hell is the Yojimbo?
Best video of the entire channel to date, thanks!
My large fixed carry blade of choice is Tops Szabo Express DE.
Regarding OTF's, they're also one of the safest knives you can carry, as you never have to touch the blade unless there's a malfunction. Still, even if a malfunction takes place, the blade only goes front to back. Thus lessening the likelihood of accidentally coming into contact with the sharp edge(s).
One of the most practical BladeHQ videos ever made 💰
tank you for showing my Fox Pikal.....
Great video. Would have liked to see more larger SD knives such as the cold steel xl voyager vaquero and black talon 2, should definitely do a larger SD knife video.
So helpful to showcase black knives against a black shirt 👍😂
I don’t usually watch long YT videos like this, but I found it enjoyable and informative. I am surprised that you did not have the Spyderco Matriarch on the table, I would curious on his thoughts on it.
Very good info. Loved this video
It would be nice to make a video about people who really use they're knives to the max!
My only complaint about this video is not doing close ups so you can see the knives.
After I saw this video I have to immediately buy Fox Knives Geco😂💪 thanks for your recommendation
Best vid you ever made
Where’s the YoJimbo?
Excellent video!
Great video. Very interesting
Very well spoken
Great video guys 🎉🎉
Is there a blade hq podcast? If not there should be.
This was great. Remember to do some Tops Knives and Eessee.
I have had cold steel, kershaw and a buck folder lock fail on me due to pocket lint. I switched to fixed blades after these experiences. I just do not feel like I can trust them. I still keep them around and use them, but I now know their limitations.
Will the jank shank be in stock through January?
What about the CRKT PROVOK ?
I wouldn't call myself an edged combat person by any stretch. But I have been pierced by a (Thankfully brand new) spyderco PM2 and that thing goes straight into the skin painlessly. It isn't until you feel the blood that you realize something went wrong.
Bastinelli knives are highly underrated. I own a black bird and a piceour. No wonder lots of the students carry a blackbird, I like its ergo in forward and reverse grip. It isn't that big for smaller hands compared to most karambit folder.
The piceour aka scalpel is super crazy sharp. like scarry sharp. I've seen the videos with the pork flesh and I don't doubt it that it can do some serious damage! Build quality on both are spot on!
I like a karambit style knife for self defense. People think too much about flings and stuff when in reality, the karambit is an extension of my wrist. If you know how to throw a straight and a haymaker, after you learn how to deploy the knive, you more or less know how to use it. You can slash and deploy in one motion which is huge when u lay on the ground. More training is better, but I think the so called high learning curve of a karambit is a myth. I've heard lots of stories from women using the 599 for self defense.
unfortanly, I've been in a knife fight before and a close friend of me got stapped in the train a year ago. Hopefully, I never have to use my knife...
Bob T, IS the Godfather of the tactical knife.
We need more 1hr long vids. 💯👌👍
Hey don’t laugh, I have a bailout that I have $400.00 in. Custom Carbon fiber scales and all Titanium screws and spacer. Of all my knives (I also have Emerson’s, Jack Crain and Chris Reeves, Bastinelli. But the “pimped out” Bailout is my favorite. Light weight, sturdy. BUT I do wish the blade thickness was at least 0.115.
Just wanted to let you guys know, just wanted to let you guys know, that you should probably zoom in with the camera and show the actual knives
TKELL are my favourite kid on the block atm
A cool way when being attacked is to say "oh i have $50 cash and a have a checkbook, i can write you a check how much do you want? " then strike! Asking this gets their brain thinking hard, like can i get away with a check, how much should i ask for, how does that work, can i cash it etc.
What is that axe in the background?
I’m surprised you didn’t choose the micro tech combat troodon for a micro tech combat knife
Definitely wouldn't wanna mess with that guy lol😮
Live what yall do! But in this video we cant see alot of the knives (black blades against a black tee shirt) and some knives ya didnt say the brand or model and price. But that's just my opinion. Thanks!
The best tool is the one you have when you need it.
Great information, however as to the visuals its hard to see the knives in question when its shot from a distance and the the black knives are against a dark background with the instructor wearing a black shirt.
Cutting through the B.S. ( pun intended) :
1) Bigger is better in a knife fight but bigger knives aren't comfortable to carry.
2) Fixed blades are the fastest, strongest and most foolproof to deploy. Forget folders for when your fine motor skills will be degraded. Folders are out.
3) Check out the Colonel Blades knife. Push daggers might be good too.
4) Reverse grip gives you less reach. Use an underhand grip for tightness, not the "effective grip" used for carving a turkey. Forget the reverse grip and fancy transitioning. Use an underhand grip or buy the Colonel Blades knife.
5) A black knife is harder for an opponent to see in the dark. You can feignt with a shiny knife and stab with a black knife.
6) Tantos and some others have tips that won't break easily. Double edged knives are hard to block or grab. Thin daggers are easy to drive into the target. Skip serrated , partially serrated or saw-tooth equipped.
7) Get a hand guard or at least a knife your hand won't slide down resulting in a cut hand when you stab.
8) Stabbing works better than slashing.
Black knives in front of a black tshirt are hard to see.
I would like to hear this guy read an audiobook
I would not.
i missed the Yojimbo
I didn't. I have one in my collection, cruwear.
I would go to pepper spray before a knife
"not worried about someone coming up behind you and grabbing your tool"
Would be nice for some close up b roll shots so we can see the Knife while you speak.
lol Poor George!
Even after the demonstration i don't think a curved blade is any better for combat. It takes away stabbing and makes the focus slashing which takes more time and gets you closer to your opponent. But im only a State Champion in Shotokan. Average people watching probably know better. Lol.
This is all great with a doll.
I agree.
Three words - Elishewitz Black Box.
Thank me later.
No SOCP
Great info but way too long. Split into two or three episodes?
Camera guy zooming at the wrong time EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!! smh
How next to him he just looks like the biggest wimp 😂
Trust me, I feel like the biggest wimp too! -George
This has real mcdojo vibes. This is just a lesson in knife murder by a shady af looking dude
That one time when Tom Hardy was a weapon instructor!
I'd really like to SEE the knives guys. Too dark, wrong background, too far away...
wearing a black t-shirt while presenting balck blades it's not the best thing to do
Reverse griff ist absoluter Schwachsinn. Sowas funktioniert vielleicht im Film
❤❤this would have been a great utube vid if even just one knife discussed was actually visible, there was not one close up of any knife which would have been great ,,,without a close up really everything discussed was a complete waste of your time and mine ,,really disappointing .
B-b-b-bulshido
Horrible backround music 😵💫
OTFs are terrible self defense knives.
Not to take away from this guy’s knowledge of knives, but I can’t see him being a master of knife, fighting or knife combat if he’s never been in a knife fight how many knife have you been?
I've been in one. Does that make me an expert?
@@mb2776 i wouldnt say expert but you have first hand experience which most people dont…
@@_superjoe I mean I get your point but idk, most of his thoughts are solid. I don't have lots of training but I instinctevly circled around my attacker. He tried to stab me and I tried to give him the worst angle of attack possibly. Then when I had the chance, he wasn't alone his buddys blocked escape routes I did the best thing, I ran away.
defensive blades are so gimmicky because I'm pretty sure this guy never actually has used these techniques on an actual person. and today where almost everyone carrys a gun, pulling a blade is basically suicide.
There's more outside the world other than usa
@@mb2776not to us there isn't. I'm here all day every day.
I hate finger and neck tattoos.
Who cares what you don't like, go back down to your mom's basement
I hate people
Those are actually temporary tattoos. For the video. Lol.
What about Tkell knives?
