Couture Gaultier - Friends featuring Eric B & Rakim etc and beyond to GAP ad, People Magazine Most Beautiful etc - my fans have always embraced my changes, the influence and still do - 35 years and counting of continued music, progression, growth.. that’s what life is all about! Nick Cannon touched upon my influence when I was on his show Monday 2.28.22

@@jodywatley I WISH your influence could be louder than what it is because mainstream media seems to suppress all that you contribute. It's like if you aren't half naked twerking in the street or warring with a fellow singer, then you aren't worthy of attention or respect.
I remember watching this live. I had heard rumors that Jody wasn't valued for her contributions to Shalamar. When I heard this speech and what she said about some folks not supporting her, I realized it was probably true. Needless to say, I cried along with her that night. I was soooooooo happy for my girl!

I remember this beautiful moment for Miss Jody Watley back in 1988. I bought her self titled multi platinum album "Jody Watley" and wore it out. I still play it. I have Miss Watley's music catalogue (Including her iconic remix album) and play it on some Wednesdays. I call it Jody Watley Wednesdays.
And of course I play her music from Shalamar as well on Saturdays calling it Shalamar Saturday. Love U Miss Jody Watley.

Respectfully, Ms. Watley was indeed a new artist as a solo performer. She had been a backing vocalist for Shalamar from 1978-1983.
Jody Watley was not the lead singer and the group Shalamar was not called Jody Watley & Shalamar.
Her multiple platinum hit packed self titled solo debut was the first time she was able to showcase her talent as a singer, songwriter and became an actress influential style icon - all combined elements made her debut one of the biggest breakouts of all time - as new artist Jody Watley. No one expected her to succeed as a solo artist because she wasn’t the lead singer, their great lead singer was the one expected to rack up big hits and didn’t, no number 1’s, no crossover hits, no gold and platinums, no nominated; much to the frustration of a lot of people such as yourself.
The rules of the recording academy made her eligible because she’d never had any previous pivotal recordings of public note as Jody Watley sir.
