How Jody Watley Overcame All The Drama Within Shalamar To Create Her Own Solo Success

- While she did experience great success as one third of popular R&B/Soul group Shalamar, due to a variety of internal and external issues, Jody Watley chose to walk away from it all. That didn’t mean she was done with her music career though. Over the next several decades she would develop her own award-winning signature sound as well as become a fashion icon.

"Gonna make this a night to rememberrrrrrrr!!!" Jody was essential to the 80s and deserves recognition.
Yes Indeed 💯⚠️
Her and Karyn White ran the 80s without a doubt. Jody deserves her flowers. People do not give her enough credit 👏🏾🗣️
Jody's solo career started in 1987, by then Janet Jackson's Control Album came out in 1986 and went 5 times Platinum, #1 on Billboards 200 chart , and #1 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums Chart. Janet's career has had #1 Albums in each of the last 4 Decades. And Janet is on a sold out Tour Celebrating 50 years in the entertainment industry since performing with her family in Las Vegas at the age of 7. Jody is very talented and has been a asset to the music industry but has not been able to maintain a top spot in the Industry and neither has Karen White who's Ex- Husband is Terry Lewis, one of Janet's long time producers.
Karyn White is another legend who DESERVES her flowers. Wish she and Babyface would work together again. 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
@@Winnib7479eah, but Janet has always been quite the lip syncer throughout her career. That sucks to do that to your fans. Jody has always performed her concert vocals LIVE.
I agree they don't
I think karen & Jody would’ve made more sense for a Versuz
The mid to late 80s had so many outstanding Black women killing the game. Jody, Whitney, Janet, Anita, Karyn, Tracey, etc
I miss that era!!! Despite the how the record labels treated them, I believe there was more talent than today.
I'm a fan of this channel. I agree, they should do upcoming episodes on Anita Baker and Karyn White.
Way better than this current era of interchangeable, mediocre at best "stars" that just won't go away.
That's a fact! My personal faves from that era were Jennifer Holliday, Miki Howard, and Shirley Murdock
Jody Watley's solo albums are classics!!
I love Jody Watley. She has it all. Exotic modelesque looks, a very unique singing voice, and catchy R&B dance song. She's so underappreciated. "Don't You Want Me" is my favorite.
She’s also a formidable songwriter folks be sleeping on that she was inducted into women songwriters hall of fame
I've ALWAYS loved Jody. She is an amazing artist.
Ms Jody❤❤❤ my Aquarius sister. She definitely deserves her flowers. She killed it both in Shalamar and solo.
She's my Aquarius sistah!
😆
Howard did her wrong though. I think he was jealous of her. He was Libra.
Have a great evening. ❤
I love "Don't You Want Me"! Great beat! Jody was definitely one of the 80s queens.
I have this jam in 12" single 😊❤❤🎶🎶🎶💯
She’s always been beautiful and she is aging so beautifully! ❤
The One N Only Ms. Jody Watley 👑👸🏽 The Queen 🎤🙌🏽
Jody's 2nd collaboration with Rakim "off the hook " was so dope, too bad it was criminally slept on
Jody exemplifies the indomitable spirit of rising after every fall. This does not diminish the fact that the original Shalamar group (Howard & Jeffrey) had fantastic hits 🎉 🎇.
The "Jody Watley" album stayed on repeat!!
I absolutely adore Jody♥️ I can go back to the good ol days of SOOOUUULLL TRAIN and seeing her & Jeffrey on stage or coming down the Soul Train Line. I loved watching them dance.
When she went solo, that did it for me. The music, her style, the dancing & singing had my friends & I emulating her.
Jody deserves her flowers 💐.
Jody & Karyn deserve their flowers 💐 and their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
I’ve been in love with Ms. Watley since I was 7 years old. Her music never gets old.
Always loved her voice and those beautiful cheekbones! Very talented lady.
Yes she is
She is a true gem 💎
I remember the solo track “Friends” featuring ERIC B and RAKIM back in ‘88 or ‘89 👍🏼
C'mon y'all.. let's bow.. all hail ✊🏽 👑 🎤 respect
Completely underrated!
Just WOW! I didn't know much of any of this. And I'm from that era. Really cool to learn all of this though. Jody is a badass! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Jody Watley is my favorite. She is like a goddess; I grew up on her sound and look. We all reference hoop earrings as being Jody Watley's.
Her first two solo albums are timeless classic albums
❤you got that right ❤
Jody was absolutely right to focus on her fashion! Whenever I think of Jody Watley, I immediately think about how she was the epitome of fly! Jody is forever that girl!!! ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Fun Fact: Jody Watley's sister is Midori, who was a porn star back in the 90s-2000s. She was inducted into the AVN Hall of Fame in 2009. She was one of the women that bathed Eddie Murphy in "Coming to America". She is also a singer and did a duet with Oran "Juice" Jones in 1997.
I loved Jody Watley when I was a kid when her solo debut album was released.
Thank you so much for this video! Jody's musical evolution over the decades is truly fascinating. From the disco-soul of Shalamar to the angular pop-funk of 80s work to the jazzier smoothed-out midtempo sounds of her 90s period to the plush, soulful electronica at the turn of the new millennium, Ms. Watley changed up her sound as often as she did her look and she deserves more credit for that. Been a fan since her self-titled album, had it on vinyl in my childhood, and as rightfully revered as her commercial breakthrough era is, her 00s music really pushed her creativity to new heights. The Saturday Night Experience Vol. 1 (a Japan-only release initially) introduced a more ambient electronic vibe---alongside some deep house and drum-and-bass---to her sound and she'd stay more or less in that vein on the follow-ups, Midnight Lounge and The Makeover. She's got folks like King Britt, Masters At Work, 4Hero, Dave Warren, DJ Spinna, Mark de Clive-Lowe, etc. on these albums and her voice is as velvety as ever . I'd encourage any fan to check out those albums and discover that Jody never lost her step creatively.
...I went to a (used) CD store back in 1999, and the clerk got a copy of it, and SPECIFICALLY saved it for me, because he KNEW I would want any rare "Miss Watley" material....I FLIPPED! ...and, I still have it.... I even got Blaze to give me a CD-R of their remix to "Saturday Night Experience"....
@@RBS_
I loved her "Off the Hook" remix with Rakim
Jodi was my crush back in the day! Love this woman! What an icon!
Lord...........how could I forget the song "Everything!" That was my jammmmm!!!!!
Jody was the talent in Shalamar,
so it’s not surprising that she’s still
having a successful solo career.
By the way,
Gerald Brown was the replacement
for Gary Mumford before Howard joined.
He was the actual vocalist on their
1978 hit “Take That To The Bank”.
No, Jody wasn't "The" Talent of Shalamar - Howard Hewitt was the lead in the group and remained as such until the group disbanded. All 3 members were instrumental and all went on to have success in their own careers.
@@juicyfruit4378
Yes,she was the talent.
I hope you know that Howard’s not
an original member of the group.
The originals are Jody,
Jeffrey Daniel,and Gary Mumford.
Gary left and was replaced by
Gerald Brown who sang on their
1978 hit “Take That To The Bank”,
and then he left and Howard replaced
him.
But besides that,
Jody had the stronger voice as she has now.
Howard’s voice died over the years.
@@jaylene.turner6524 Google is your friend - look up Howard Hewitt - was lead vocalist of Shalamar period. No one is checking for either Watley or Hewitt these days but Watley was never “the” talent in Shalamar
Sorry but no
@@juicyfruit4378
Google is also your friend as his last name is HEWETT not Hewitt.
Jody is still selling our concerts around the world.
Nobody cares about what
Howard and Jeffrey are doing
with that none-singing
Carolyn Griffey.
Howard can’t even sing anymore,
and Jeffrey could never sing.
😂
@@jaylene.turner6524 a typo is all you’ve got?😂 sorry dear, but Google this: according to Ticketmaster, Watley has zero concerts planned; Hewett - 2; Nov 9 NJ and 18 Nov Chicago. Guess he apparently can still sing🤗🤗 guess you just outright lied on that one - move along, you’re done here🤪🤗😂
near 5:27 #Aquarius! So Futuristic! Their key phrase is *I Know* She's a Gem! ♒🌠
Just thought i'd point out Gary Mumford was replaced by Gerald Brown and it was HIS voice on the 'Take That To The Bank' hit. He was repalced by Howard Hewett down to not ever being paid by Dick Griffey (boss of SOLAR records),Hewetts first job for Shalamar was lip syncing to 'Take That To The Bank' ironically as Gerald refused to do anything further.
She is one of the GREATEST dance pop legends! Jody DESERVES her flowers! 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
You didn’t mention her greatest hits album in 1996 still remember buying it when it came out lol
Brilliant group beautiful music beautiful times

love Jody In shalamar I need to listen to her more as a solo artist tho I feel like she’s very underrated
Jody is one of those singers that people forgotten to quickly . Begging of her song looking for love sounds like x files theme.
I have all of Shalamar's classic albums "Disco Gardens"(1977) "Big Fun"(1979) "Three For Love"(1980) "Go For It"(1981) "Friends"(1982) "The Look"(1983) "Heartbreak"(1984)😊❤❤❤🎶🎶🎶💯
Miss Jody wasn’t in Shalamar for Heartbreak, that was the New Shalamar Howard, Hewett Micki Free, Delisa Davis lol Miss Jody left Shalamar in 1983 before The Look album was released.
❤Shalimar hope the get back together before it too late
I like Jody and her singing and her style.😍
I love her first album and Babyface Lover In You Remix ❤️
Lover in you is my damn jam

We got a lot of the disco invasion on the airwaves here in Oz, and I guess there was a lot of Motown before that, but the only black artists from the 80s who made a lasting impression on me were Prince, Tracy Chapman and Phil Lynott. I wish Ms Watley well.
älskar jody. 🎼
Ms. Whatley there is no shalamar with out you. Period. I continued to follow you with your solo career. Carolyn will never be a Jody. With the success you had on your own. I smelled jealousy. Thank you for setting the record straight. ❤ I love you still. And of course your Talents
Without Howard There's No Shalamar. Jody and Jeffrey Left In 1983. In 84 With Howard, Shalamar Won A Grammy.

Great documentary. More facts. Gary Mudford, Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniels were a touring version of Shalamar. In 1978, Gary left to pursue a career in the ministry and he didn't like the business side and he was replaced by Gerald Brown who along with Gary was an original member of The Soul Train Gang. The official and original line-up featuring Gerald, Jody and Jeffrey recorded the album Disco Gardens which featured the classic Take That To The Bank which featured Gerald and Jody singing lead. Towards the end of their tour, Gerald Brown left the group due to a contract and financial dispute with the late Dick Griffey the founder of Solar Records. Gerald revealed in Jody's Unfilitered Documentary that the trio didn't have a recording and performance contract and they label was taking the money from their tours to develop and produce other acts at the label. Jody did score hits from her album Affairs of The Heart. Her single I Want You was a Top 10 R&B hit while the follow up I'm The One You Need was a top 30 Pop Hit.
More facts Miss Jody debut recertification 3 times Triple Platinum fam Solo she also made new list All Time Black Hot 100 Solo Artists this thread of comments represents Miss Jody went on from “The Drama” whatever that means to make her mark beyond Shalamar. ✊🏿 I can admit as 7:15 AND Jody Watley’s fan

Jody was the prototype of Beyoncé and everyone since ❤️❤️❤️❤️
You left out that she posed for play boy in 1998!
I thought that Stephanie Mills and Jeffery Daniel were married from 1980 until 1983
did howard hewett, jeffrey daniels, and jody watley get along now ?
Miss Jody left Shalamar over 40 years ago come on brotha you still keeping in touch with old former co workers? 😂🤦🏽♂️ Shalamar is still a group Miss Jody is still Solo.
Good Morning Jody has no ill will against Jeffrey and Howard. In fact she even tried to reunite with them several times during the last decade but it didn't happen due to scheduling conflicts and in 2014, Jody was contacted by the BET Awards to close out the show with a medley of her hits along with some songs with Jeffrey and Howard. Jody was for it until Howard and his management tried to take over and wanted the trio to perform ballads and not dance. Jody refused and when the BET Award Producers wanted to go with Howard's vision, she backed up and posted a blog about it on her website. She also has seen Howard at events and it's cordial. Plus Howard isn't the original lead singer of Shalamar. Gerald Brown was the group's Official Original Lead Singer who sang lead on their hit Take That To The Bank, but he left the group due to contract and financial disputes with the head of Solar Records who also was taking the group's performance money to produce and develop other acts on the label
If I wrote down everything I know about Jody, it would be long enough for a video longer than an hour!
I am not even a fan but this video is not deserving of her iconic status.
She was :
the first mainstream artist to Vogue and waack (after Taylor Dayne -on live gigs- and much later Madonna)
the first to wear couture and high fashion (Westwood, Miyake, Gaultier and Chanel) mixed with streetwear in mainstream videos (next to Grace Jones)
the first Pop/R&B singer to include a rapper on song
the first to shoot a video with David Fincher (before Madonna)
the first to be allowed to shoot in Paris Opéra Garnier
the first to bring gays, trans, club kids and hardcore rappers together for a video shoot
Jody was and still is self-styled!
She was smoking hot.
Ugh, she blocked me on Twitter, so I'm a fan no more. 😄

Jody Watley is talented, no doubt. But the reality is, Howard Hewitt was the biggest talent in the group. Can anyone say with a straight face that Jody could hold a candle to the vocal power of Howard? C'mon.....
Which is why, even after Jody and Jeffrey left, people continued to listen to Shalamar, because Howard was still in the group singing lead. Howard clearly had the ability to carry the group by himself, regardless of what other two people were standing next to him.
It was only after Howard left that the group really began to fall off.
And Howard's solo career was also very successful.
Agreed. Also Shalamar Won A Grammy In 1984 For Dancing In The Sheets Without Jody And Jeffrey.
I agree. Howard was the real singer. What a voice he had. Jody’s success felt more like a fluke. She had style and that drum and bass type sound which was popular but she was not a real vocalist.
She had a Workout video??
Neva knew She had more Than 2 Albums.
...Jody was the FIRST African-American Woman to have a Workout Video (Feb. 1990, "Dance To Fitness")...she did her choreography from her Videos, in workout routines....
If she only had 2 she did better than when she was in Shalamar either way bro
Her workout video sold over a million copies one of first “branding” projects produced by an artist black woman Miss Jody is a visionary
Good Morning. Miss Jody released 6 albums for MCA Records including a Remix album titled You Wanna Dance For Me? and a Greatest Hits album in 1996. After leaving MCA, she formed her own record label Avitone Records in 1995 and released the album and single Affection. In 2014, she linked up with Shalamar's original lead singer Gerald Brown to record the single Nightlife which was a Top 5 Dance Hit and was a Top 5 UK Dance and R&B Hit.
