I am even more impressed by Hard Eight. The emotional complexity and maturity of that story and to come up with and direct it at that age is incredible beyond words.
Been waiting five LONNNNG years to see another PTA masterpiece, since THERE WILL BE BLOOD made it's debit. And now here I am just four days away to finally being introduced to another PTA cinematic gem: THE MASTER. Time to refuel up on PT's genius all week and prepare to be knocked outta my seat. He's one of the greatest... thanks Paul.
"It was finally called 'Hard eight'.. Those of us who love it call it 'Sydney'" Wow just wow.. I was not expecting Charlie Rose to say that haha You can tell Paul loved that..
@@franciscocanton8867 I believe Leo also backed out of Guillermo Del Toro's film which was what he turned down PTA's film for. Now, ultimately he is working on a project with Martin Scorsese. I would kill to work alongside PTA.
Woah.. Paul always looked very young but this is the extreme. Its funny because if you look at him and Christopher Nolan today you'd never think that PTA is older than Nolan.
@Vameon Yeah, I think he had that Tarantino / Scorsese enthusiasm at first due to general excitement, being a young guy, drugs, and less expectations for his work. He's now taking a more Kubrick approach, where he's barely interviewed anymore, unless it's in Europe, and he doesn't do commentaries (after "Boogie Nights") or even include behind the scenes on his dvd's (after "Magnolia"). The more cryptic and mysterious his films have become, the less willing he is to talk about them. Mystique.
I really hate that PTA and Tarantino seem conjoined at the hip movie-wise, but it's inescapable. In that respect, looking at his body language and approach to writing and directing, they seem like movie soul mates.
@Mrsilenciobackgammon While I do agree with you, its almost like comparing apples and oranges. Tarantino has a much campier style while PTA is just perfect and almost surreal at times.
@jacholas330 Very true, well said. I like them both, I'm just sick of people un-educated in film stating that Tarantino is the second coming of Movie Christ, while he is not even the best in this era.
but boogie nighrs was a succes because the director had a vision and brought that magic to screen..The cast was also stellar but while dirk dggler was a central character wahlbergs performance wasnt anything special at all..People always say this movie was the performance of his life..Which is wrong, this just happened to be the best movie he was privileged to be a part of..
The only movies I've ever appreciated from him were Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained, while Pulp Fiction is the only one I actually loved from him. Other than that, I just don't see all the love surrounding his other films.
"He's no Spielberg or Cameron, k?" Wait, JAMES Cameron? WHAT? I'll grant Spielberg, even though he hasn't made anything THAT great since 'Saving Private Ryan', but James Cameron's films are little more than blockbusters and nothing more.
He has some the best *technical* skills of any director but overall? Not sure if he's the best American director. IMHO, best American director goes to Aronofsky. I just find the stories he tells a bit more compelling (just a little, little bit).
he is very possibly my all time favorite director...very easily in my top 5...but he used to look like such a...NERD!...lol...brilliant director still!
@Andrew824100 Paul W.S Anderson made full of shit movies based on video games, novels... nothing originals. PTA... Magnolia, Boogie Nights, Punch Drunk Love, There Will Be Blood, Hard Eight... so much original.
He was 27 when he made Boogie Nights. A special guy.
I am even more impressed by Hard Eight. The emotional complexity and maturity of that story and to come up with and direct it at that age is incredible beyond words.
26
Leo Dicaprio actually said in an interview a few years back that the biggest regret of his career was turning down Boogie Nights.
I dont believe that though... Because then he wouldn't have made titanic.

3:00 to 3:35 is the reason why I like Paul Thomas Anderson so much, and I wish more people in Hollywood thought like he did.
PTA looks like Bill Hader here
PTA and Leonardo DiCaprio should work together some day
well he just turned down a role for PTA's next film
@@franciscocanton8867 I believe Leo also backed out of Guillermo Del Toro's film which was what he turned down PTA's film for. Now, ultimately he is working on a project with Martin Scorsese. I would kill to work alongside PTA.
@@chloeim99 funny how Bradley Cooper is now starting in both PTA’s and Del Toro’s films.
@@jacktorrance1237 Funny how it will be his worst film! But DDL is retired and P S Hoff man is dead so.
@@KingMinosxxvi I’ll hope for the best, but we’ll see
Woah.. Paul always looked very young but this is the extreme. Its funny because if you look at him and Christopher Nolan today you'd never think that PTA is older than Nolan.
You can really tell he likes Charlie a lot! They could talk for days.
He seems so likeable and sweet here - now he's a drunk misanthrope.

PTA reminds me of my best friend
He changed so much and TWBB. It's like he's a totally different person!
Seems to be like modest and generous guy... who makes great movies
wow. he looked so different ten years ago. Spread the love for PTA.
The glasses must have been for effect. This is the only time I've seen him with them.
What are you talking about? He was nominated for an Oscar.
Knocking up Maya Rudolph twenty times has undorkified Anderson a great deal.
Unfortunately it did nothing for Rudolph.
grow up
I really hate that PTA and Tarantino seem conjoined at the hip movie-wise, but it's inescapable. In that respect, looking at his body language and approach to writing and directing, they seem like movie soul mates.
Gosh, he looks so much younger now. He looks far older than 27 here.
True Genius!
Paul is Great!
Love PTA... Gonna watch THERE WILL BE BLOOD after i'm done with this interview
If anyone's better than PTA, it's the Coen's
Looks are not everything ;)
PTA was a prime example of that.
I love his movies.
Boogie Nights is my favorite movie by him.
So talented :)
Holy crap when he was younger he kinda looked like Paul Dano, who plays Eli in there Will Be Blood.
It's weird seeing PTA younger and without the beard
@Mrsilenciobackgammon While I do agree with you, its almost like comparing apples and oranges. Tarantino has a much campier style while PTA is just perfect and almost surreal at times.
They're good friends too!
He's much better than Tarantino. Tarantino could never have made There Will Be Blood.
So true. Tarantino really only showed genius once. PTA has made several masterpieces. There Will Be Blood in particular is an American masterpiece
@jacholas330 Very true, well said. I like them both, I'm just sick of people un-educated in film stating that Tarantino is the second coming of Movie Christ, while he is not even the best in this era.
Yes it is.
i agree 10000%
if leo was in boogie night...wow!
Damn, he was such a kid back then XD
woow PTA!!!
Cerebral takes the cake for most intriguing XD
i would place this behind both magnolia and there will be blood. PTA is my favorite director for sure though.
but boogie nighrs was a succes because the director had a vision and brought that magic to screen..The cast was also stellar but while dirk dggler was a central character wahlbergs performance wasnt anything special at all..People always say this movie was the performance of his life..Which is wrong, this just happened to be the best movie he was privileged to be a part of..
PTA is my hero!
Aye. And it's 10000% is the true true too XD sorry, it's December and Cloud Atlas is still in my head.
The only movies I've ever appreciated from him were Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained, while Pulp Fiction is the only one I actually loved from him. Other than that, I just don't see all the love surrounding his other films.
Damn...
i think the plot to Kill Bill was A LITTLE more original than The Expendables
@peteagassi Oh hell no. PTA is a master filmmaker.
PTA seems here so friendly and cheerful. lately he is not.. nowadays he seems so serious and unhappy
Yeah... getting married and having a kid can really fuck someone up!
@Anxiousloth Why move to a smaller house.
I think they are very different. So i don't think you can say that really
wow he aged a lot in 15 years. looks like a freakin' kid here.
"He's no Spielberg or Cameron, k?"
Wait, JAMES Cameron? WHAT?
I'll grant Spielberg, even though he hasn't made anything THAT great since 'Saving Private Ryan', but James Cameron's films are little more than blockbusters and nothing more.

@killerlipsonrai literally?
wish leo had taken the role hahaha
Years ago Leo wished he did boogie nights because he finally admitted he was tired of the Titanic fan based hype.
I call it Sydney.
IMO, it's because of my taste.
i think its a little ridiculous to compare tarantino to pta. they attempt to make very different sorts of movies and they are both brilliant.
PTA >>> Quentin Tarantino IMO.
3:58 "And... and... and... and"
He was 28. I wouldn't call that a kid.
That is why I said IMO.
He's great, ya know? ....He's Burt.
I hate how charlie is too lazy to ask questions, so he just says one word for them to explain. It gets awkward in conversation.
Just too bad Wahlberg never became a truly accepted actor, he had a lotta potential.
Boogie Nights, Magnolia and There Will Be Blood >>> anything Tarantino's ever done?
not a kill bill fan?
LOL PTA kinda looks like dirk diggler here.
God what Leo would have done with this part...
You must be very young then.
Don't make me laugh XD I got nothing against Uma Thurman, but I think of those films the same way I'd think if The Expendables XD
he was kind of embarassed in the interview, especially talking about hard things like giving the part to the actors who weren;t chosen at first
@Mrsilenciobackgammon and PTA could never have made Pulp Fiction
6:56 Burt hates him.
PTA>>> all other directors IMO
Out of all the American directors you choose Aronofsky? Ehh.
6:15 Burt hates him!
Aye, but PTA's better filmmaker in my opinion XD
Is PTA jewish?
30. You must be very old then, as age is relative.
he is very possibly my all time favorite director...very easily in my top 5...but he used to look like such a...NERD!...lol...brilliant director still!
Leonardo Di Caprio as a porn star, haha
He looks EXACTLY like Weird Al Yankovic's character in the videoclip to "White and Nerdy". I mean, EXACTLY.
Aye, only a little XD
@FuckingAlpaccino lol you should drink his milkshake!! wtf is he talking about P.T is amazing
He's a drunk now.
