(I am a ref) I was refereeing a youth hockey tournament that was in town. I was crossing the blue line following play to the net-when I made eye contact with Jonathan Marchessault who was standing on the other side of the glass. He had just won the Stanley Cup & Conn Smythe roughly 3 months before that, and I came to a sudden stop as I was starstruck. While I was distracted, a team scored and when I heard the noise of players I turned around and waved off the goal. Obviously, it was a clean goal which ended up being overturned. But moral of the story is; it is very easy to be distracted by NHLer’s.

The goalie interference calls have been mind boggling this playoff season. I don't think any one has a real clue as to how the refs are going to call them one way or the other. It seems like they just flip a coin and it is either confirmed or not.

Brazeau for the Bruins, didn’t see the number for the Panther, so. I personally wasn’t watching the game, so. This one is a mystery to me…but with all the hatred boiling over. It’s funny and nice to see such nonsense happening.
I'm a Ranger's fan. If Truba had connected on that hit it would have been the trifecta of suspendable offenses. Elbow to the head. Leaving his feet. Intent to injure. I seriously doubt he would have played another playoff game this season, no matter how far they go.
That’s easily the most egregious non call I’ve ever seen for goaltender interference. Blatant cross check that clearly stops Swayman as he is moving to his right to make a great desperation save. Maybe he wouldn’t have made the save but he deserved the chance to try. From a Florida fan.
...and Bennett had ZERO business being in that game because he sucker punched Marchand the prior game causing a concussion. Now that the reverse angle has mysteriously been made available a day late...everyone can clearly see just how filthy that hit was and it was very plainly a suspension due to intent to injure. Not a Bruins or Panthers fan btw, but I'm struggling to understand the rules in this series when it seems like the rules don't apply to Sam Bennett.
As a leafs fan, please this lol seems like the NHL is trying to please the casuals in the regular season and then the playoffs going back to what the die-hards have loved for ever. And in the end everyone is confused about where the line is
The worst call I have ever seen was the 2017 Stanley Cup Finals Game 6 between the Penguins and Predators. After a shot on net by the preds, the ref blew the whistle because he thought Matt Murray had the puck but the puck was sitting in the crease. A Preds player banged the puck in and the refs waved off the goal because he had blown his whistle. As the pens fan I could not believe that they disallowed that goal
The last 3 games at Boston have been decided by refs. First was the goalie interference on Boston when he literally was held over the shoulder by the D. next was the bennet cross check without goalie interference . Last night was the not goalie interference cause it was Florida’s player who actually lifted bobs stick. It’s a disaster
The worst call I’ve ever seen is one I remember vividly from the 1st playoff series between Tampa and Florida. The refs had been atrocious all series, but one call took the cake. Bolts player gets clipped and goes down, everyone knows a Bolts PP is coming, even the Panthers player goes and sits down in the box. Then out of nowhere, and without explanation, the ref makes the Panther leave the box and puts the guy he ran over in instead. Most bewildering thing I’ve ever seen

First period, about 9 : 20 minutes in, Panthers and Bruins game 5. Bruins have the puck in the Panthers zone, and are sustaining pressure. McAvoy takes a shot from the Blue Line, Bobrovsky overplayed the puck and was WAY out of his crease, thinking he had it in his shirt/shoulder padding. But the puck was loose, and ended back to the Bruins. The Ref blew the play dead. Why? The puck wasn't frozen, and it had been clearly out by the dot where Lindholm was chasing it down. Bobrovsky didn't fall over in pain. Bobrovsky didn't lose his mask, or glove/blocker, etc. So why was the play blown dead? Why did the ref just skate over and check with Bobrovsky like he was hurt or something? Is this something that normally happens? A ref thinks a defending player in hurt, and blows the play dead while the other team has pressure in the offensive zone? Make it make sense.
This FLA team reminds me so much of the early 2010’s MTL teams. There’s like a weird balance between diving and toughness that is so frustrating to play against
The bennett miss cal on goalie interference could be my pick for worst missed call this year, but going back a couple years when Montreal faced Las Vegas in the semifinals, Corey Perry took a stick to the face and was bleeding all over, no call, Nick Suzuki straight up getting punched in the face right in front of the refs and there was no call, that was most frustrating game I ever watched
2:23 Trouba is such a clown and the fact he's still allowed to play in the league and is even a captain speaks volumes to how the nhl treats its big market teams. Absolutely ridiculous.
Worst non call was game 6 bruins/blues finals where the blues player blatantly slew foots the bruins player in front of the ref. The bruins player is air born and lands on his back. Mostly both teams stopped playing bc they thought it was for sure a penalty. It wasn’t and because they stopped playing the blues player scores and made it 2-0. They tie the series at 3-3 and win the cup.
Mate, we have VAR in football and the calls are still s*it. Video refs don't solve anything, there's still plenty of grey area and interpretation. I'd suggest taking it for what it is, moaning about bad ref calls is part of the game. I don't mind bad calls, but I want safe calls. A player throwing elbows out like that is totally not acceptable. Neither is a high stick drawing blood. The soft cross check penalty on the oilers is harsh.
The play by play guy on that trouba missed hit... "going right through him," "oh hes going too..." just stops mid sentence when he notices the elbow like hes at a loss for words.
I played competitively since I was about six. I was taught never to bitch about the refs so, I don’t spend time complaining about refs. This is a very fast game and their job is very difficult. We get the benefit of multiple replays in slow motion. Just except that missed calls and bad calls are part of the game and figure out how to win around them.
@@RobTalksHockey this is absolutely a big problem. I know several guys who quit because of the harassment and the posting of videos online criticizing their calls. They don’t get paid enough and have to deal with death threats at a U12 game?
Bro, imma remember that goalie interference no call forever. But has anyone else noticed that the Panthers play a soccer team, embellishing everything x10, especially Bob!
I've seen harder cross checks than that go uncalled, like that one time a forward cross checked a defender six times. SIX. TIMES. And was credited with a goal but the refs call Nurse for cross checking on a play like that? Like I hear people say "yes, it's a penalty. But how can you justify calling that when you let this similar play that should have also been called a penalty go?"
I'll never understand on what criteria refs call cross checks. Ofc not every contact is called, would end in 100+ PIM every game just by cross checks lol
The worst call I've ever seen was probably the Makar's "on-side" goal vs the Oilers 2 yrs ago. Hot take, I know. Let me explain: The offside rule has always been consistently interpreted such that control of the puck mattered, not contact with it. This is because it's not feasible for a linesman to base their decision on contact at live game speed. Thus, the offside rule is now applied differently at game speed than in video reviews, which makes consistency categorically impossible. Additionally, the sudden mid-game decision to change the applied interpretation of the rule such that having control no longer falls within the scope/definition of "attempting to gain control" set the precedent that refs can randomly change the interpretation any rule whenever they please, despite the existance an established and accepted interpretation. Basically, they can now make up rules in the middle of a game and that's fine as long as someone texts Elliott Friedman explaining exactly how to twist the words to fit the new narrative. Lastly, it wasn't another missed call or inevitable mistake that happens at game speed. Those are easier to forgive. This was a calculated decision made upon video review. They took the time to watch the slow mo and talk it over before throwing away decades of established precedent.
to me the worst call so far was the sam bennett goal. bring a red is hard, playoff hockey is fast and sometimes you miss things, but when it gets sent to toronto and they still get it wrong!? and boston gets a penalty for the missed challenge!? that's a joke
IMO, the Jamie Benn Goalie interference call was total dogwater. Both TNT and the Refs have made it abundantly clear that they want the Avs to win the series
I remember Perron trying to decapitate Kadri with a flying elbow, after Kadri scored on the St. Louis Blose in the 2022 play offs. Since the "attempt to injure" thing wasn't invoked then, it will never be.
SUGGESTION: enable coach’s challenges at all points of the game. At any stoppage, the coach can challenge any play he feels should/should not have been called
No way, way to many stops. Coach’s would call every single possible infraction all game to give their team the best chance to win, I see that going horribly.
The RUclipsr ToughCall did a few videos on the Bennett goal no goal. It seems the NHL may have accidentally gotten the call correct by saying it’s a good goal. They pointed out that the rule book has a rule about goalie interference when it is a “rebound oprritunity”. I forget the exact wording but basically it says if the goal is scored off a rebound then there basically can’t be goalie interference. I can’t stand the nhl rule book and the leagues refusal to edit it.
I'm a long time oilers fan I've watched the team be as stagnant as the red wings when are they going to get a decent goalie smith wasn't that good from day one skinner good but has a tenancy to be hot on one nite and stink like fresh shit yah mcdavid needs some help from the rest of the lines but you score 4 the opposition gets 5 because your goalie could be replaced by a german shepard with the same outcome come on let's stop a few pucks edmonton or let connor go were he has a legitamit chance to get a Stanley cup he deserves it and unless something out of the realm of reality happens the greatest player in years will hang up his skates and retire with no ring what a shame come in oilers shit or get off the pot .
In the boston Florida séries the power plays are 25 to 14 in favour of Florida and if you go and look at the stuff boston is getting called for/ the stuff florida isn’t getting called for is brutal as a neutral fan.
Pettersson charging while stationary. Seen oilers fans say the rules say if you jump into the player. But key word is "Into" can't jump into a wall while stationary jumping
Oil fan here. I felt Soucy should have had a fine only, and Zadorov deserved the suspension. The hard crosscheck from behind (after the game ended) was gutless and caused the other hits from Soucy & Hyman - who also should’ve been fined. And yes, McDavid should’ve had a double minor for his high stick on Hughes (regardless that it was unintentional) because he drew blood. Refs miss calls sometimes and that was a strange miss, but not uncommon. Also Trouba absolutely needs some fines / suspensions for his reckless attempts to injure before he actually succeeds.
The one where the player was cross checked into the goalie and was reviewed and not deemed goalie interference. That play in the bruins panthers game makes my brain hurt it’s so bad. If that’s not goalie interference then wtf is!?!?!
While that elbow didn't connect, his foot did connect with his head when he fell back to earth. So he got away with attempting a dirty hit and it being an accident instead
Game changing calls should be reviewed. That doesn't mean everything will be perfect but it would help. The Oilers would have felt the difference if McDAvid had received a game misconduct and deserved at least a game suspension.
How did McDavid deserve a suspension for what was clearly unintentional? These biased takes prevent the league from taking criticism seriously. Good grief.
@@johnnyc.31 Unintentional? Lol. He saw Hughes coming right before he raised his stick with the blade of the stick moving forward clearly in the path of his face. The puck was on the ice with his teammate and no contact forced him to raise the blade up.
IMO, the goaltender interreference rule needs to be re written to make it clear what is and isnt goalie interference because under they way its currently written noone actually knows what goaltender interference is
i feel like a way to fix the officiating is by having everything be able to be challenged. the onpy reason why the bennet goal stood was because the refs couldnt call a penalty off the review. if teams are able to challenge offside, why not habe them challenge soft penalties that may alter a game or missed calls that have a direct afect to the game
When does coaching factor in? Especially for a player with a history. Does someone have to be karate kicked with a skate blade and bleed out before a change is made?
It doesn't matter. The mentality now is get Lord Stanley no matter what. Think of The Hawks from The Mighty Ducks. You are witnessing that mentality now in the NHL... WIN WIN WIN.
I thought the Marchand hit was a reverse check, Marchand was going directly toward the puck carrier, Bennet saw him coming and braced for the hit, just so happens it led to a reverse hit. Also, the rules talk about protecting players, not rats
The irony is how Rangers fans have been chanting Potvin's name for 5 years over a clean hit yet Trouba literally knocked Sid out of the postseason and cost the Pens a series they lead 3-1 and up 2-0 in that game 5. Trouba is a dirtbag.
The cut down on fighting plus the addition of the third man in rule has led to a MASSIVE Increase in severe injuries and concussions in hockey. Used to police itself within enforcers. Guys who would put you on your arse If you screw with a star player or if you went over the line and did something you shouldn’t have. You’ve been bruised and bloodied. So you would not do the same bad thing twice. But players didn’t want to cost their team when given majors for third man in rule. So all those enforcers scumbags like Marchand Could take cheap shots, high flying elbows etc Repercussion. He wouldn’t have lasted a year in the 80s playing the way he does
Its not a complete mess, its a complete rig. The american teams need to do well to draw crowds and fans. Thats why officiating is brought to help them. Its been like this since, well you know when.
You didn't even include some notable misses, there were quite a few in the Colorado/Stars series, the highstick on Hyman that was missed or the Vancouver player throwing the puck out of the zone.
I don’t get the hate for the ad. It says more about RUclips and what pays their creators than him doing the ad. I don’t like gambling companies but I don’t hold it against him for getting ad revenue.

This right here…. This right here… is the 50k views opening line! This right here!
Hahaha
as an oilers fan im well aware you're allowed to interfere with a goalie in the playoffs, even if you're actively holding the goalies pad.
Let me explain:
The offside rule has always been consistently interpreted such that control of the puck mattered, not contact with it.
Every penalty against Dallas has been soft hooking/holding calls.
Yet Dallas is still up 3-1 so they seem to be defying the odds…
Playoffs - too many penalties are called as it is.
Pettersson charging while stationary. Seen oilers fans say the rules say if you jump into the player. But key word is "Into" can't jump into a wall while stationary jumping
Yeah that one was bizarre. What I don’t get, is why call it for the first time in decades or at all in the playoffs
I haven’t met an oilers fan that was both happy that Soucy got suspended, but also pissed that he got suspended for something so weak.
@@johnnyc.31 100% perfect take
The one where the player was cross checked into the goalie and was reviewed and not deemed goalie interference. That play in the bruins panthers game makes my brain hurt it’s so bad. If that’s not goalie interference then wtf is!?!?!
NHL is rigged 100% fire Bettman he is shady AF!
The officiating is just so bad. I wanna watch hockey god fucking damnit.
Top rope Trouba 😂😂😂
Cross checks in the back are different that cross checks to the butt.
Fair, but according to the rule book they’re the same. My point is, when every call is based on discretion it eventually becomes inconsistent
6:32 bros says here’s the absurd part and ad started playing
Hahaha
If Trouba had landed that Misawa Elbow on Necas, Necas would have died.
Tom Wilson period
They need to have video refs to call penalties on the ice at each zone of the ice. They have the tech for it. The reffing needs to be consistent.
Nice vid
also wasnt it during this 2013 playoff then Gryba gave a nasty head hit to Ellers ? and a 5 vs 5 line brawl
He wouldn’t have lasted a year in the 80s playing the way he does
The worst call I've ever seen so far in my life was when Chara punched Gardiner in the face and somehow Gardiner got a penalty for that
He was asking for it.☝️ 🤭
I don't know if you're just Stirring the Pot, BUT....... this years Playoffs are Not Even Close to having the MOST FIGHTS of ANY Playoff Series.
Every time a goalie is screened the fans want it called interference?!?
Its not a complete mess, its a complete rig. The american teams need to do well to draw crowds and fans. Thats why officiating is brought to help them. Its been like this since, well you know when.
the petterson hit
You didn't even include some notable misses, there were quite a few in the Colorado/Stars series, the highstick on Hyman that was missed or the Vancouver player throwing the puck out of the zone.
It's been bad the past 2 seasons. It's just highlighted because it's the playoffs. The wings have gotten a huge portion of it this season.
Officials are above the law.
I don’t get the hate for the ad. It says more about RUclips and what pays their creators than him doing the ad. I don’t like gambling companies but I don’t hold it against him for getting ad revenue.
Non call…Adam Foote getting his face smacked into the boards from behind by Redwings. Face was cut and no call. 95-96 timeframe I believe
That Marchand hit looked clean, if a bit high...
Edit: never mind ruclips.net/video/T1B8dONsrik/видео.htmlsi=LkFr95LDBQmVQdZK
If the NFL can do it and help "push" certain teams deeper into the playoffs, why can't the NHL?
You whiffed on the fact that Trouba's skate connected horribly with the back of NECA'S head. Trouba is a goon
I agree, the refing has been atrocious during the playoff.
0:40 was an injury causing hit 💀
