Just getting into DLG...this video was super helpful. David's a good teacher and I'd like to see him do another DLG advanced video. Really nice job on video production.
Trying to throw upwards will often cause the wingtip to strike the ground. David's technique is excellent and will give good high launches with minimal physical effort. There is a guy in his mid-70's at my club that outlaunches me because of his good form (I'm 25 and reasonably athletic).
Fantastic ! This is the first time I have seen a DLG and also the first time I have really considered gliders at all, I really like the concept. Awesome work guys !
Lovely to watch. Reminds me of when I was a kid and got good at launching my chuck-glider. No radio control but if I got the launch right I could get the plane to climb steeply just to the right of the breeze then as the speed reduced the rudder had a slight left set so the plane would then make wide circles slowly descending to the field.
Any chance we could see a getting into gliding / DLG episode in the future? Would be great to see what's out there from 3 channel birds like the radian to warm liners. Thanks again awesome show.
I have so strong thermal activity that I lost two gliders in the last few months. nothing like walking home with just your transmitter to keep you company!
Very interesting. I've never considered a DLG until now. Sounds a bit like surfing where you come across the wave. Lots of skill needed in launching and flying. Brilliant. John
EXCELLENT video! I've been slope soaring for a while now, and keep checking out DLG. This has pushed me over the edge. I need to find a good place to fly around here, and I'm in.
I would say this is the best "Flight test" yet, but it's not. They get so much better with every video. I would like to see more on discus launch gliders. But everything you guys have posted is great!!!
My old neighbor competes with DLGs, before I moved I've seen him fly off a single toss for over an hour before, he's taken home dozens of trophies over the years. I really miss the guy actually, I flew freestyle drones so we both enjoyed RC and would fly together sometimes, he even gave me like $1500 worth of his deceased sons FPV gear after he died including $500 goggles and camera, a Spektrum DX7s transmitter and a decent size helicopter, he didn't fly anything but the DLGs and wanted me to have it all, I still use and fly everything he gave me to keep his son's memory alive.
Great video David, thank you for exposing this aspect of rc soaring to a broader audience. I'm just watching this at the field at the world champs right now... Fantastic work. Off to get some flying in before the team manager is back, see ya!
great video thanks. one useful skill to learn with DLG is to use the rudder more than the ailerons to turn and to keep the body tangential to the arc of the turn to minimize drag.
I've made a foam DLG and it's posted on Flitetest as an article. I think it proves that it can be done. The Article is called "Cheap, simple foam DLG with good performance"
I had the captions on while whatching...boy that was a whole different story and it made me burst out laughing at some of the "miss-translated" words. 😂
Hey Josh, Have you been able to design a foam board DLG yet? Money is tight but I would buy a design that Flite Test comes up with. Hope this idea comes to life. God Bless.
I fly professional drones but this looks like a great way to get some flying out of my system especially on hot summer days where lift is hard to achieve.
RUclips rates this as "no mature content". True but a little harsh! Since most of your planes have about $5 worth of materials and an afternoon's work it changes the game, makes RC flying fun again. Cheers! My brother-in-law held the discus record at University level for years. Damn, bet he could launch these.
Great video! May I request a build/development of a scratch built DLG? I think a lot of people would love to get into DLG but are discouraged by the complexity and expence of all the different airframes being sold. maybe of you guys could build something like the Super Gee and explain the build process, either with hotwire or foam board (I'm not really sure what would be better or what is necessary myself). Essentially, something relatively simple to build that flies relatively well would be awesome!
+PilotPhill Having built composite aircraft like this, I really don't think the FT crew have developed the skills to do that. I mean that as no insult to them. They have techniques down that I don't but this isn't something most people have the resources to do. Supergee wings aren't too bad to build, but the fuselage is the real pain. It's best to buy there unless you're doing professional work (I am) and have the resources at your disposal already. The Fuse has to be hollow molded in one piece from a combination of carbon and Kevlar. All this said, go on rcgroups and look up the "what's in the bag?" and "you too can have a dlg for about $75" threads. I learned composites from those threads and the Phil Barns dvd's. My own DLG only goes about half the height of David's Neos, but it's fun and I've had it over 2000' up on a couple occasions. I flew a Helios2 recently and it launches about twice as high (200'+) for the same effort and technique.
+joshuawfinn I see. I suppose thay makes sense as given the seeeminly vast difference in building techniques between DLGs and foam park fliers. Thanks very much Joshua. I'll have to check those threads out.
I think DLG's are great for hobby, nice to see people more active. As a lot of people in the hobby are over weight, this is some good exercise for them. Plus they are quiet so more social able in some areas, than noisy planes.
David explains the thermal technique at 9:19. Similar to how UHF LRS manufacturers won't mention range, YMMV from one pilot to another. I didn't even know DLGs existed until watching the video, but now I'm interested in getting one.
Da-veed, you are well practiced at launching. Question: did you ever throw discus in school? I did and recognise the form right away with the exception of arm rotation which differs for discus. Also, discus contact is @the last crook of 4 fingers, grabbing the edge. You are right on with the practicing of forms. Also includded: discus throw, spinning frisbee throw, shot put, ballet pirouette, & karate spinning heal hook. All require balance & proper foot placement to succeed well!
Btw it was very impressive how when David launched the aircraft it made a huge WOSSSHHHH! and Josh launch it almost no noise! So you can see how powerful David launch is and how much technique you really need.
Hi guys, I first saw this video a couple of months ago and it inspired me to get a DLG. That arrived on Christmas day, so hoping to get it in the air real soon! Thank you!!
Find DLG people in your area, go to one of their competitions, and you'll see them thermalling a lot! The first thermal I caught on my first DLG was exhilarating. I'm getting better at reading the signs now... :) The DLG (F3K) world championships are happening right now in Denmark.
I would love to have an ep on this gliding ! I'm a heli pilot but I enjoy gliding a lot these days with a friends radian airplane but I would like to take it to the next level. I also like the hotliner planes and gliders like this are just awesome! Tips welcome on how to start gliding etc
these gliders are awesome. If you can find the thermals you can fly for 40mins or more. You don't want to be crashing them too often though, these aint no bixlers! I did a little vid of a DLG competition I went on, type DLG waltz into you tube. Nice vid chaps
awesome video. ive always wondered how you could hand launch a glider and get enough altitude to fly.now i know. great video and instruction. 2 thumbs up
Thank you so much!!! I was really looking forward to this episode!! =) For Bixler: It would be awesome to build a cheap DLG, if not with foam maybe using balsa which is still pretty cheap. Btw AWESOME episode...I love it!!
:¬) My favourite Flitetest vid so far! As I'm getting into gliding, still with my Bix2 so far, this glider would be Nirvana for me. But to keep costs down I'm going to start with building folded foam wings and stick fuselages. They won't float as good as the Neo, but they'll keep me going until I can sell the family jewels.;¬)
F3K are top notch gliders. You might notice the servos screaming all the time! Pretty much complex science involved in this category, though one can get the real feeling of thermal catching.
hey guy love all the vids and love my simple soarer, I got a challenge for you!, How about building a solar powered motor assist glider? I would love to see how you get around the weight of the solar panels or if u can find light weight panels... I think it would also be a educational challenge... cheers,
LOVE IT! Can't wait to get my own! Next, we need a video on set up hahaha :) love all of david's knowledge! :) Can't wait to hear more of whats in that crazy swedish mind of his!
Army will find this DLG extremely useful sooner or later. It can be easily converted into a cheap but stealthy, super capable, single-man carrying "missle" on the field.
There are places where you can only fly something below a certain weight in restricted (city, near airport) airspace. It's 600 g where I am ... DLG does the trick.
Just getting into DLG...this video was super helpful. David's a good teacher and I'd like to see him do another DLG advanced video.
Really nice job on video production.
Wow... David's throw brought tears to my eyes
I love the slow motion of David launching it. It is just amazing :D
Trying to throw upwards will often cause the wingtip to strike the ground. David's technique is excellent and will give good high launches with minimal physical effort. There is a guy in his mid-70's at my club that outlaunches me because of his good form (I'm 25 and reasonably athletic).
Your 32 now, how’s your form
Fantastic ! This is the first time I have seen a DLG and also the first time I have really considered gliders at all, I really like the concept. Awesome work guys !

One of your best episodes . Thank you guys , thank you David for your excellent tips!
Any chance we could see a getting into gliding / DLG episode in the future? Would be great to see what's out there from 3 channel birds like the radian to warm liners. Thanks again awesome show.
I love that this is the first video suggestion for discus launch gliders!
I have so strong thermal activity that I lost two gliders in the last few months.
nothing like walking home with just your transmitter to keep you company!
1959cutter1 :(
@@henryhudd1316 i think he got over it after 7 years
Poor glider
This video was my entrance in DLG.And i love it like crazy.I learnd so much in the last three weeks. Its so relaxing.
Great video!! I used to fly a hangglider and hunting thermals was our life! Gliders like this really test the skill of the pilot.
a little over 2 hours on a throw is what I get. I didn't really feel like flying longer than that ;)
Excellent vid! This really helped me get started with flying my scratch build F3K Mimi. Thank you!
Great video, So far on the net this is the second video that talks in simple terms hot to throw a DLG .
That is amazing. I've got to try this. Thank you for making this video. Please make more of this type.
David has such an effortless charm.
Beautifully filmed and edited! Well done Chad!
Love the cool opening imagery and the milking Mother Nature reference. Hysterical unintended visual
I would say this is the best "Flight test" yet, but it's not. They get so much better with every video. I would like to see more on discus launch gliders. But everything you guys have posted is great!!!

Flawless launching technique, David. Awesome video.
I think your earlier videos, like this one, were the best.
Great video David, thank you for exposing this aspect of rc soaring to a broader audience. I'm just watching this at the field at the world champs right now... Fantastic work.
Off to get some flying in before the team manager is back, see ya!
Another great vid guys =]
Love how frequent you are churning out these vids!!!
This is making me get back into DLGs =P
Best opening yet! Congrats, that was assume! Love it!
Realy loves thise oldschool David episodes.
Haha, that line was totally worth it to put it in the closing scene :D David and his philosophies.
great video thanks. one useful skill to learn with DLG is to use the rudder more than the ailerons to turn and to keep the body tangential to the arc of the turn to minimize drag.

The opening shot is majestic guys.
I was thinking about getting into dlg and i just got all my tips in this video, thank you guys so much
Spot on guys, excellent video as always.Keep up the good work. Great video.
More episodes about DLG PLEASE!!!
Love it, flite test always makes me smile.
thanks guys
13:50 I have been waiting to hear that for ages!!!!
Great video

great video! love the channel and what you all do for your subscriber's. to cool!
tanks for the link and nice job outwitting the anti-link robot!
Thanks for the intro! Very eye opening
Such a work of Art
For sure get into it, it is most rewarding.

great info and coverage on this type of flying guys!

That intro shot was artsy...
Now I got finally the idea how launch it, thanks!

Great video,, I am thinking of getting one of these gliders this winter ready for next summer, Thanks for showing, Cheer, Pete
Been waiting a loooong time for this one!!
Btw it was very impressive how when David launched the aircraft it made a huge WOSSSHHHH! and Josh launch it almost no noise! So you can see how powerful David launch is and how much technique you really need.
fantastic, yes DLG's are addicting to say the least, any glider really..cheers
You guys should try setting up your own thermal use large black tarps.
TuthHurts911411 this would have been a sweet episode. DIY thermals
Hi guys, I first saw this video a couple of months ago and it inspired me to get a DLG. That arrived on Christmas day, so hoping to get it in the air real soon! Thank you!!
How'd it go?
Excellent! It's pretty awesome. My longest flight has been 35 minutes and I haven't been doing it long. It was a spec in the sky.
Awesome, have been waiting for you guys to do a DLG vid!
I've flown the Blaster 2 DLG (& 3) and the small Elf all were excellent. Blaster 2 is my favourite. Only down side, they are a little delicate.
Find DLG people in your area, go to one of their competitions, and you'll see them thermalling a lot! The first thermal I caught on my first DLG was exhilarating. I'm getting better at reading the signs now... :)
The DLG (F3K) world championships are happening right now in Denmark.
Actual discus is so much fun too. My two favorite things; discus and arial RCs'
Would dearly love to see a Ready Board DLG, I just love gliders...
Awesome video guys , thanks !
I love the start of the intro very nice and looks awesome :)
I love you guys!!! you did it!!! congrats!!!
I would love to have an ep on this gliding ! I'm a heli pilot but I enjoy gliding a lot these days with a friends radian airplane but I would like to take it to the next level. I also like the hotliner planes and gliders like this are just awesome! Tips welcome on how to start gliding etc

awesome video. ive always wondered how you could hand launch a glider and get enough altitude to fly.now i know. great video and instruction. 2 thumbs up
I watched this video, then I stayed up till 3am designing my own dlg in a cad program and I'm building in next week
Did you build it?
Thank you so much!!! I was really looking forward to this episode!! =)
For Bixler: It would be awesome to build a cheap DLG, if not with foam maybe using balsa which is still pretty cheap. Btw AWESOME episode...I love it!!

when David says technique, I allways think of the meme with spongebob saying TECHNIQUE
very useful tips, thanks!
my gosh that thing is absolutely beautiful.
The video is incredible and that plane is awesome also.
hey guy love all the vids and love my simple soarer,
I got a challenge for you!, How about building a solar powered motor assist glider?

Wow that looks very fun!
Dlg part 2!!!!!!!!!!! Thermal strategies!!! Please!!!... With a cherry on top
Great video guys =)
Maybe you guys can do a review of the Libelle dlg when it comes out. Should be fun to see a friendly contest like what you guys did with the Alula.
Army will find this DLG extremely useful sooner or later. It can be easily converted into a cheap but stealthy, super capable, single-man carrying "missle" on the field.
I found this very good launch mode!
WOW I have never wanted a glider until now, I'm hardcore into gas and nitro but WOW lol that looks really fun!
You guys should make more videos on thermalling
key to thermalling is a feather weight glider, i can catch thermals even at my local park :)
I miss him on FlightTest
I would love to fly gliders, especially DLG, but the cost has kept me from trying
There are places where you can only fly something below a certain weight in restricted (city, near airport) airspace. It's 600 g where I am ... DLG does the trick.
When will we get to see the flitetest advanced fpv? seems like a no brainer episode.
its winter and the skin is peeling off my cheeks. i feel better now thanks!
If you go on flitetest's website you can find how many people have set up their boards.
Start at 4:20 and listen for David's creepy I am already sweaty!
this is such a great show :D
You guys are the best
