  • Larks RC Club and the Buzzards of Orlando hosted their 3rd Annual Discus Launch Glider Competition. This is the first time I've seen DLGs in action and I was impressed with how these precision gliders stay in the sky with no power and limited wind movement.

    Hey guys, Mike here: Thanks John for coming out and shining a light on the niche side of the soaring portion of the RC hobby! I hope all your viewers don't mind listening to me gush over DLGs! Quick notes: DLG, often called F3K, its FAI designation, has a world championship every 2 or so years. I was WRONG, the world championships are THIS Summer, 2023. The BAMF glider I mentioned is still produced, it's on version 2 and was extremely well represented. Armsoar Composites sells this model. There are 1m versions of these models as well, much more budget friendly. John mentioned an electric he heard. F5K, or electric assisted launch DLG is becoming popular. It allows those with disabilities or who have a number of years under their belt to participate. We're on RC Groups and would love to talk your ear off! Oh, and to those DLG guys who heard me say that task E is five declared flights, I know, I know, that's how it used to be; it's 3 self nominated targets! That's why I'm not on the team! Congrats to Joe, James, and Oleg who will be representing the USA this Summer in Romania for WC F3K!

      How do you guys get around the FAA 400 foot rule? I used to fly gliders but had to stop when that went into law.

    • @GatorGlider
      @GatorGlider Год назад

      @@SplitHairz Erm... we fly to 399 feet! I don't want to get into a whole "thing" over the 400ft "rule". If anyone really wanted to split hairs, these models mostly fall under the 255g limit. The lightest of the light are ~190g and an average "clean" build is around 230g. A heavy DLG is in the 260-300g range. These are flyable weights, battery and RX included. There have been times when a ~450g model has been used. However, in the specific case I'm thinking of the wind was 15-20mph and the pilot was sloping the front side of trees, much lower than 400ft.

    Hey John, I am not sure what that means in MPH but the wind sox you show there at 7min is a 12Knots wind sox. Each one of the orange segments represent a 3kts wind increment.
    That is exactly what I am aiming to fly properly, DLG mine is a Striker 3 1M and a Magellan 2M

      As mentioned in this video, get a used DLG. If you can, find one of these competitions (formal FAI competition name is F3K) near you as you can usually find some one there selling their used planes. You can also find them for sale on RC Groups but I like seeing them and getting my hands on the glider before committing to the purchase. If you are learning on your own, take it slow. Just get use to flying and launching the plane before trying to go for high launches. It is during the launch where you are are the greatest risk for seriously damaging your plane. Always try to throw the plane level with the ground and use a launch mode/switch to cause the place to rotate to the climb attitude. If you try to throw up, you are likely to strike the wing on the ground during the throw, breaking the plane.

      @malte9999 Год назад +1

      @@bitogre thank you for your explanation. I know some people doing this and did a few rounds, but someone else threw the plane for me. I might just have secured me one used and one almost completed DLG.
      I really appreciate your description how to launch the plane. This is going to be another rabbit hole ons this hobby.

    Two of my friends are really good at DLG - they fly in TeamGB for the UK at the world champs. Their thermalling skills are unreal. I also fly DLG, but I'm just middle-lower of the pack. I read somewhere, on RCGroups I think, about someone wanting to improve their F5J thermalling skills, and was thinking of enabling his vario. Loads of pilots tuned in telling him to fly DLG. I dunno, I still suck at F5J haha. Hoping to do better this year though, I'm putting in loads of practice.

    A steady breeze is not what you want, it kills thermals. Having said that, it is sometimes difficult to determine what is a breeze and what is a thermal. I noticed a small hill. If a steady breeze is going the appropriate direction, the hill could be used for lift.

    • @RCVideoReviews

      Thanks for sharing. These guys seemed to know what to do :)

    • @GatorGlider
      @GatorGlider Год назад +1

      A breeze isn't so much an issue as a good strong wind. The FAI limit for F3K, these types of sailplanes, is ~20MPH. Granted when it's that windy you are looking more for orthographic lift, there are bubbles of lift that will from and break off. These can be acquired and used for a ride. Having no wind can lead to a situation that is termed "over developed" basically there is no to little temperature differential so the columns of rising air don't build and release in a cyclic nature. You can have instances where, boom everything is going up at an incredible rate and then there is nothing for a long time. I find the best days are when there is variable 5-10 MPH. This helps the thermals form, develop, and move on so the cycle repeats.

    I didn't know they had discus launch competitions. Figured comps for gliders and similar...just never knew discus launch was a criteria in it lol. Pretty cool.
    So they're just literally launching the gliders like a discus...there is no power adder/'help' as far as the discus launching portion right?
    I did the shot put in junior high. Did pretty good considering my body type and the typical body type for that event lol. Probably why I have shoulder problems now...but hey it was a blast launching that 8lb cannonball lol.
    Cool to see this aspect of the hobby. Seems peaceful

      @@RCVideoReviews We've added in the aspect of electric assisted launch. There is an official category called F5K. We (the organizer and probably 99% of the participants) want as many people to come and fly as possible. There are a significant portion of people in our RC hobby that suffer from hip, knee, or other physical ailments. The electric launch DLGs have been tuned for a ~10 sec motor run to no more than 50m. This launch height gets them to the lower portion of the average launch height. This way we can get guys who've loved the hobby their whole life but due to age or an injury cannot complete the physical aspect of it. I think our oldest participant was 63 but we've had pilots into their 80s at other contests.

      When I was taught to fly DLG, I was told that if your arm and/or shoulder is sore after a day of flying, they you are doing it wrong. When I throw, my arm is mostly limp and along for the ride. The power comes from snapping your waist so it is my back that is sore after a day of flying.
