This is one of the reasons I love your channel. You cover all kinds of gear, different brands, and great BTS content. You are open and honest about your experiences with your gear and open to recommend anything if you're impressed by it. I'm currently running with the LUMIX S5ii, which I love. But, I'm always looking for another - simpler - camera to have to shoot with. For the price, the Fuji XM-5 is hardly "simpler", but, definitely a great camera to have considering its image quality and feature set. Great video.
That’s what’s funny. Haters think I’m some sellout or something 😂 in reality I just love seeing what gear is capable of and if it motivates me at all. For $800.. this thing motivates me. I get a Fujifilm camera with film sims that I can play with for photography.. I get a tiny camera I can film open gate with.. I still prefer my S9 over this but when I want some of that Fuji juice, now I can get it for cheap.
@@cammackey Yea, I've been looking at the S9 as well, especially as a b-cam to my S5ii. Personally, I think the S9 got way more hate than it deserved. If I had the money, I would buy the S9 straight out and shoot a film with it to prove my point. LOL.

This camera is great i want one. Absolutely you can use this for professional stuff just get a side grip like you said and use angled cables and the fan to keep it cool. One thing that makes this camera even more amazing that i think you didnt mention, is that it can shoot braw to a blackmagic video assist and i think also prores raw to an atomos ninja v, v+ etc. Great footage, great camera $799 YIKES! What a time to be alive lol
Great video! I had a loaner X-M5 for a few weeks. I wish I spent a little more time shooting video either it. Spent most of my time shooting photos but man the video specs are wild for the price.
I think one of the things that you touched on but needs to be addressed is that cameras are tools. Grant it some perform better than others but much like musical instruments true artists can make theme sing. Learning the limitations of what you have and operating within them is far more advantageous than just buying a better camera. Thank you for sharing and stay awesome.
Cam is proof gear is only 10% of the equation - skill, determination, and simply getting out and creating by far carry more weight when producing great work. A large customer budget is always nice too ;).
I use my Xpro3 with an ef to fx Speedbooster with the remus 45 and it's amazing (also the anamorphic photos are something else with the fuji recipes). I was thinking also about the XM5 because of the open gate mode and it's more versatile. Might jump on it! Thanks Cam :) Nice Review.
Beautiful examples you captured. I think it's time that camera manufactures dial back the MP count though. More is actually worse in the case of video. I personally prefer video sensors when they max out at 16mp. The image has more life when the photosites are allowed to be larger. The first gen FujiFilms produce images with a liveliness and pop that hasn't been able to be replicated since the jump to 20+mp. Also phase detect sensors block half of the light hitting each photosite. Fujifilm reported this when they added phase detect to the X-T1 and reported worse noise performance than the X-Pro1. Users reported "waxy" images above ISO 400 (noise compensation being applied). Both bodies use the same base sensor, the only difference is that the X-Pro 1 doesn't have phase detect sensors over it and the X-T1 does. So adding Phase detect reduces light gathering by a half. Not dissing phase detect, it's a game changer for solo film making. Just noting it's consequences as it's not well known. So a prosumer video camera only needs 8mp for 4k, and 16mp for 6k. I think they should be the benchmark for prosumer video cameras going forth. People will rave about the look and feel of the images, and the better high ISO capabilities, like when the Sony A7S first came out.
@@hubey then yes I agree! 🤣 It’s hard cause people wanna spend money on something that can do both. So I think we just need more cinema camera options from each brand that isn’t just recycle their stills sensors. Granted that’s a lot of money to invest into both types for a company
@@cammackey Yeah it's tricky! An ideal option would be quick swappable sensors, like we do with lenses. I think Richo did that once. That way we retain the same body, so all the muscle memory for operating the camera body is the same for whatever sensor option we choose. Also means that a person can keep the same body for decades (like with film bodies) and just upgrade the sensor/processor stack when there's a technology jump worth upgrading too. More environmentally friendly, and people get to keep a camera body that's become second nature to them. It's crazy to get a whole new body just for new sensor/processor tech. Personally I go micro 4/3 for solo run and gun video with a stabilised zoom lens. And fullframe to medium format sensor for stills photography. The smaller sensor allows for levels of IBIS the larger sensors haven't tried to copy yet. Like 8+ stops on sensor alone. Paired with lens optical stabilisation and you get 11+ stops on OM Systems. Then we have close to a steady cam just hanging around our neck at only a pound or 2 of weight. But like weddding photographers who carry two camera bodies with lenses so as to remove lens swapping time on primes so they don't miss a shot; hybrid shooters can do the same. One video body and one stills body. It's more of an initial investment, but it means less compromise in results and operation for each medium.
I have both. Depends on what you want to do. If you are more video focused, Xm5. Can still take great photos. Just without a EVF. If you want a EVF and you know you need IBIS with a bigger battery and In body flash to boot. Xs20 is the bet. XM-5 is one hell of a B/ Everyday Camera.
I’ve been shooting on the fx3 for almost 3 years now and I WISH the ports were on the grip side. Nothing worse that having a bunch of cables sticking out at you when you’re trying to operate handheld
How well can this match a Blackmagic Pocket 4K as a second camera for interviews etc? Looks cool for shooting as an A camera as well but curious about B camera possibility. Audio input is 3.5 stereo?
I don’t know if flog-2 from the 10bit h265/264 files would get you close as I’ve not really tried, but considering with a BM video assist you can record BRAW straight out of the HDMI port you should have no issues there. Keep in mind that the flog2 image is 10bit, I believe the braw output will get you on the same page as the 12/14bit (I can’t remember what the bmp4k has) a bit quicker. Still though, 10 bit will get you much closer than 8bit ever will…
The opening shot is so beautiful it hurts and the whole video is great inspiration for cinematic indie filmmaking. Too bad the Blazar Apex doesn't come in X mount, since open gate times 1.33 would have been almost exactly 2:1.
Its basically the same camera, but with IBIS, a bigger battery, better display and an evf. Image quality and software is the same as the X-M5. I have the X-S20 myself and love it
@Gundrs cool. I currently have the xs20 but havnt played too much with video. I was curious to know how much stability the ibis gives over the digital stab as well.
fujifilm xm5 in China sells around 1000$ now. For such price, used Panasonic S5 or S1h is much better choice. They have anamorphic stabilization, open gate, shot vlog, better sensor readout speed in s35 mode for anamophic paning.
I saw your video on the Blazar Apex 50mm AF lens and bought it and it came yesterday! Using it with my Sony a7SIII but Now I have to get this Fuji XM-5! I've been looking for a Fuji as a 3rd camera this will be perfect!
With the FX3 you’re already getting S35 vertical height. So if you get a S35 anamorphic.. it’ll clear on the FX3. You just have to crop the sides off so it turns the sensor into a 4:3 S35 sensor essentially. Now if you sjoot 3:2 open gate full frame.. you’re going to get a lot more character out of the lens
I’m assuming I can used the luts on the gfx100ii shooting flog2. What about flog2c? I just got rid of my r5c and I’m blown away with the video I’m getting out of the GFX100ii
Yeah I think they could work just prob would need some more tweaking in some adjustment areas. Shooting in ProRes on the camera just so easy to edit on my iPad In DR.
If you're struggling for ideas/content, then perhaps consider a budget break down of your XM5 rig, anamorphic and not. You could do side handle versions, top (like you're using), the most budget friendly monitor that desqueezes bla bla. I think the rigging aspect of this camera completely flew over the heads of those moaning about lack of IBIS. With the money saved buy a gimbal!
For me.. S9. It has full anamorphic support and a S35 4:3 mode. But I mainly use it in full frame 3:2 open gate mode. Granted, it is almost twice the price of this XM5. That’s why I wanted to share this camera on the channel
I've been considering this as a b-camera to my XH2S. I'm stuck between moving on that, or selling all of my Fuji gear and getting into the Sony FX3 system.
Also saw that and very confused, can't be right. Why would it be any different to X-S20, which has terrible results, with exactly the same sensor and processor?

Sorry to be the party pooper, but there is so much fact fault in this video I can’t help my self to straight some things out. Open gate does not necessarily mean “4x3” like your graphic says. That depends on the camera and its sensor. And in this case it’s a 3:2 sensor, so open gate in 6.2K will have the aspect ratio of 3:2 and I guess you miss out on the second “16x9” that should be 9:16 And about the APS-C format, your right about the fat that its not the same as S35 but its damn close compare to “full format”. The X-M5’s sensor is 23.5mm x 15.6mm and let’s not forget a 3:2 sensor. Alexa Mini for example have a sensor size of 28.25 x 18.17 mm but are a 4:3 sensor. Shoot ing on film, If using 4-perf, the Super 35 exposure area is 24.89 mm × 18.66 using CinemaScope Or an open gate to be able to use anamorphic lenses. And were do you get the “30mm shorter” from? Make no sense? About the dynamic range. Its hard to see what you actually are doing in of the test since your not showing the scope. But it looks kind of awful @4:46 when the canyon in the horizon just blow out when you pull the exposure up and down to its limits showing the shadow details in the jacket and the colors in the sky. It looks kind o limiting? How is this exposed? Since the sky is clear was it not possible to go up 2 more stops? And the shot after @5:01 How is that exposed originally? It docent look over exposed. It looks pushed, sure. But it would be nice to understad if you pulled up 3 steps in post and then back or actually over exposed it 3 stops on the field. But I guess I'm not the average person. Sorry and thanks of other wise grate content!
For 4:3 you’re correct. Except the sensor doesn’t shoot 3:2. So it’s technically an open cause it uses its full vertical. I had the font say 3:2 but then I kept reading it was 4:3 and thought everyone was wrong. So I stacked some 3:2 open Pyxis and the crop was for sure 4:3. For the format, I said 3* not 30.. it’s 3mm shorter than S35 while full frame 16x9 is around 0.5mm taller than S35. Nothing wrong I said. For the post breakdown, you’re way over thinking it. I went into detail but cut it all out cause it wasn’t important. I didn’t once say I pushed the exposures post. If it looked exposed to the right, then that’s how it was done in camera. Everything I did in post was to bring the exposure back down. Some clicks I brought down by 4 stops and still had highlight detail. You’re over thinking it man.
Hey @cammackey, Fujifilm released F-Log2 C in November 2024. This new profile features an expanded color gamut that closely aligns with the ACES standard. Would you be able to create LUTs for F-Log2 C? It’s Fujifilm’s latest profile for the X-H2, X-H2S, and GFX100II, and I feel like this is one small step toward a Fujifilm Eterna cinema camera. I’d definitely consider purchasing your LUTs for F-Log2 C! I have an X-H2 and can send you some sample footage, but I’m in Canada - and it’s winter now, if you catch my drift :) Everything’s covered in that white stuff on the ground. I’m not sure if folks in Arizona have even seen this! ;)
They put the ports on that side due to the stupid flip out screen. I know it's a 'vloggers' camera but I'd love if this camera just had a screen that didn't flip out. Then the ports could go back to where they should be. That's the only thing holding me back from this. I hate flip out screens.
@@cammackey The FX3 is for sale for 4600€, FX30 is 2200€ on sale, R5ii is 5100€ etc. Honestly I dont even know what the over the pond prices are. You're right that the bottom line does stand. Its great value.
Cam, you forgot to mention what an incredible stills camera the X M5 is. I know you love stills. Fuji film simulations, custom color recipes, wow. On the fly, go from stills to open gate Flog2 video. I’m keeping mine in tourist mode, no rigging, with a camera strap and some extra batteries. Go anywhere and not get bothered. I originally bought it for my wife as a starter camera but she’s not using it so I’m keeping it. Haha

I got started in a different era, so I feel I have a very realistic expectation around gear. It’s all good these days but they all provide different capabilities for different needs
@@cammackey no I’m not, I just want to understand why people want a full frame fuji, if you say full frame is better because it’s bigger, doesn’t this logic apply to medium format? Im just trying to understand because you’re not the first person to talk about this, but I never read a proper explanation about it, just curious lol
@ yes as you just said.. the reason Fujifilm GFX line exist is because even Fujifilm is aware that larger sensors are “better”. The crop sensors are capable of anything in the right hands.. but when it comes time to push your files..full frame holds up better.. and medium format holds up better than full frame. The thing is tho.. medium format is still very slow compared to full frame.. and fujis crop sensors aren’t really any faster than full frame.. so why not just make a full frame Fuji camera. On top of that, larger sensors allow you to get closer to your subject and create more background separation without having to invest into crest fast lenses. You can do the math to cheat it, but it’s just not the same. You can only cheat physics so much.
@ bet! For some reason, the highlight roll off on the shots in this video look a little bit better than I would expect from theXH2S. Like would you say the highlight rolloff on XH2s is better than fx3?
@ I wouldn’t call them cons really… it’s a $800 camera. I’m sure they could of easily put those things in there but obviously the price would go up. Granted I’m old and have been shooting for over 15 years and started with DSLRs so my perspective is more positive rather pessimist

The S9 is almost double the price I think but has way more features! Better AF, full frame open gate, full anamorphic support, shutter angle, the list goes on.

How does this compare to the BM Pyxis? I realize they seem like apples to oranges but both are 6k open gate.
The Pyxis still has this beat by miles. It’s full frame and internal raw.. external raw isn’t the same.

Hey Cam...could you put a nightwalker on it with the 1.25 anamorphic adaptor and shoot open gate...that would be amazing on this camera.

For me.. S9. It has full anamorphic support and a S35 4:3 mode. But I mainly use it in full frame 3:2 open gate mode. Granted, it is almost twice the price of this XM5. That’s why I wanted to share this camera on the channel

I've been considering this as a b-camera to my XH2S. I'm stuck between moving on that, or selling all of my Fuji gear and getting into the Sony FX3 system.

Sorry to be the party pooper, but there is so much fact fault in this video I can’t help my self to straight some things out.
Open gate does not necessarily mean “4x3” like your graphic says. That depends on the camera and its sensor. And in this case it’s a 3:2 sensor, so open gate in 6.2K will have the aspect ratio of 3:2 and I guess you miss out on the second “16x9” that should be 9:16
And about the APS-C format, your right about the fat that its not the same as S35 but its damn close compare to “full format”. The X-M5’s sensor is 23.5mm x 15.6mm and let’s not forget a 3:2 sensor. Alexa Mini for example have a sensor size of 28.25 x 18.17 mm but are a 4:3 sensor. Shoot ing on film, If using 4-perf, the Super 35 exposure area is 24.89 mm × 18.66 using CinemaScope Or an open gate to be able to use anamorphic lenses. And were do you get the “30mm shorter” from? Make no sense?
About the dynamic range. Its hard to see what you actually are doing in of the test since your not showing the scope. But it looks kind of awful @4:46 when the canyon in the horizon just blow out when you pull the exposure up and down to its limits showing the shadow details in the jacket and the colors in the sky. It looks kind o limiting? How is this exposed? Since the sky is clear was it not possible to go up 2 more stops? And the shot after @5:01 How is that exposed originally? It docent look over exposed. It looks pushed, sure. But it would be nice to understad if you pulled up 3 steps in post and then back or actually over exposed it 3 stops on the field. But I guess I'm not the average person. Sorry and thanks of other wise grate content!
For 4:3 you’re correct. Except the sensor doesn’t shoot 3:2. So it’s technically an open cause it uses its full vertical. I had the font say 3:2 but then I kept reading it was 4:3 and thought everyone was wrong. So I stacked some 3:2 open Pyxis and the crop was for sure 4:3.
For the format, I said 3* not 30.. it’s 3mm shorter than S35 while full frame 16x9 is around 0.5mm taller than S35. Nothing wrong I said.
For the post breakdown, you’re way over thinking it. I went into detail but cut it all out cause it wasn’t important. I didn’t once say I pushed the exposures post. If it looked exposed to the right, then that’s how it was done in camera. Everything I did in post was to bring the exposure back down. Some clicks I brought down by 4 stops and still had highlight detail. You’re over thinking it man.

Would you be able to create LUTs for F-Log2 C? It’s Fujifilm’s latest profile for the X-H2, X-H2S, and GFX100II, and I feel like this is one small step toward a Fujifilm Eterna cinema camera. I’d definitely consider purchasing your LUTs for F-Log2 C!
I have an X-H2 and can send you some sample footage, but I’m in Canada - and it’s winter now, if you catch my drift :) Everything’s covered in that white stuff on the ground. I’m not sure if folks in Arizona have even seen this! ;)
They put the ports on that side due to the stupid flip out screen. I know it's a 'vloggers' camera but I'd love if this camera just had a screen that didn't flip out. Then the ports could go back to where they should be. That's the only thing holding me back from this. I hate flip out screens.

Cam, you forgot to mention what an incredible stills camera the X M5 is. I know you love stills. Fuji film simulations, custom color recipes, wow. On the fly, go from stills to open gate Flog2 video. I’m keeping mine in tourist mode, no rigging, with a camera strap and some extra batteries. Go anywhere and not get bothered. I originally bought it for my wife as a starter camera but she’s not using it so I’m keeping it. Haha

@ yes as you just said.. the reason Fujifilm GFX line exist is because even Fujifilm is aware that larger sensors are “better”. The crop sensors are capable of anything in the right hands.. but when it comes time to push your files..full frame holds up better.. and medium format holds up better than full frame. The thing is tho.. medium format is still very slow compared to full frame.. and fujis crop sensors aren’t really any faster than full frame.. so why not just make a full frame Fuji camera. On top of that, larger sensors allow you to get closer to your subject and create more background separation without having to invest into crest fast lenses. You can do the math to cheat it, but it’s just not the same. You can only cheat physics so much.

No, the XH2S will have similar image quality under 30fps. But once you go to higher shutter speeds, the XH2S image quality whoops butt

@ I’m one of those folks that has to have a viewfinder and the port issues are a nope for me. Solid little camera but too many cons in my opinion
@ I wouldn’t call them cons really… it’s a $800 camera. I’m sure they could of easily put those things in there but obviously the price would go up. Granted I’m old and have been shooting for over 15 years and started with DSLRs so my perspective is more positive rather pessimist

The S9 is almost double the price I think but has way more features! Better AF, full frame open gate, full anamorphic support, shutter angle, the list goes on.
