'Family Portrait of the Black Earth' is an animated short film by studio ROBO Lab based on the eponymous short story by Bulgarian writer Yordanka Beleva.
The film is a part of the Fiction in Motion initiative by the Elizabeth Kostova Foundation, aimed at popularizing contemporary Bulgarian fiction through captivating visual storytelling.
Yordanka Beleva has been hailed as "one of the most interesting contemporary voices of Bulgarian literature" by Words Without Borders. Her hugely popular poems and short stories have been translated into English, French, Spanish, German, Turkish, Arabic, and Croatian and anthologized in multiple collections. She is the author of six collections of short stories, and has been published in The Los Angeles Review and Firmament (Sublunary Editions) in Izidora Angel's English translation.
