Moral of the story: there are things in life you will not survive, so please recognise them and ACT accordingly. Getting too attached to something is an addiction.
Lessons I've learned: 1. Don't build up something that's gonna bring you down. 2. Sometimes giving up is the right decision. 3. Let go of something when you know it's bringing you down. 4. You should resist from your addiction, because if you won't, It'll bring you down. 5. Always leave something for yourself.
There's a deeper way to read this. The movie isn't just about being hooked to a single addiction like knitting, it's about our general state of mind, constantly engaging in activies that are never satisfying and missing out the present moment because of it. Notice how she started playing with the scissors after realizing the needles are gone. She only stayed mindful for 20 seconds. That's how most of us live our lives.
i think that addiction is heavy implied. Just look at where she is a barren area ( symbolizing isolation or the effect that the addiction had on her life) sitting infront of a cliff (showing the stakes that she put herself in) all so she can knit ( the addiction). She knits sooo much that even when danger is presented she would sacrifice her own life to continue and only when she was about to fall off the cliff (death) did she crawl (struggling to wing off) to gain the ability to to cut off the unhealthy relationship ( to go cold turkey). Scenes later we can see her hair is forever ruined ( how these addiction can impact your life afterwards) and still we see her fiddling with the needles (showing her urges to start again) and even after she dropped the needles she to fill in the void started playing with the scissors (another addiction) which we can only see as causing self harm in the end. And to bring more light to the sistuation think of what she is using needles and scissors ( which was a slang for a drug). Im not knocking what you are saying, but i rather you not knock someone else's claim without exploring why they would even say it. Edit: wow thank you all for the likes!!!! ☺☺
I like how this illustrates how an artist can tie their entire identity to their craft, and how sometimes, that can lead to an unhealthy obsession with it, to the point that you dont know who you are outside of it

If it was that easy things would be different. Nobody wants to be addicted. You can't ask what's wrong about the addiction. You have to ask what's right about it. What is this person getting out of it that they aren't in life. A person's behavior will always be shaped by their environment. Hey, I'm just sharing what I've learned. If we don't help each other we'll never get anywhere, right? Here, I'm not saying you're completely wrong, but give this TED Talk a chance. I think that what they want to show is simple : - when you go obsessed with something (passion, money, love...) will start to be more a problem that something you enjoy. The fact is that human being constantly try to fix things , fix your own problems, even if you see that it “attracts you to the ground”. When something overtake your time and do not bring happiness to you : leave it away. Just stop. Don’t try to fix and loose all your energy. My grandfather used to tell of an old woman who lived in his town. She was one of the fastest knitters in around and the legend was that she knit so fast that she kept a bucket of water next to her rocking chair so she could cool off her needles when they got too hot.
She isolated herself in an environment where she wouldn’t be disturbed. But her decision nearly killed her. When she finally realized that she had to let go over her habit, she found another habit that came similar to the one she was forced to give up

I think this story is about how people tend to keep on emotionally invest in something that they should have ended a long time ago, ...whether it be career, a project, an unhealthy relationship, etc.. There are many opportunities to end it gracefully and begin a new chapter in life, but many simply refuse to do so. This emotional investment will eventually take hold of someone completely and drag him to an abyss of no return. And whilst it was easy to put a stop to it before, now it's out of control. One would get deeply entangled and can't get out, just like what happened to this woman in the short film. But if you are lucky and do struggle free, you would realized it was by your own hands, stubbornness and refusal to let go that you have caused yourself such a tremendous amount of grief. When you do let go, it's freedom.

It is all relative. Also, the fact that she could not anticipate what was about to happen as she continued adding more yarn to her work, makes calling her "brave" for where she decided to sit, a hard sell.

1:02 She is going to pick up the scessior to stop her addiction but end up with picking the another wool..... Thats why in the end she regrets of not using the scessior
I dont think she was going to pick the scissors up intentionally. She doesn't even know that she has an addiction. I saw it as a way to show the viewer that no, she wont cut the knit, she intends to keep going.
this is really deep as her addiction to knitting is like her addiction to her ambitions. in the end she sacrifices a part of herself to her ambitions, but it still pulls her over the edge. in the end, she bit through her own hair to se herself free. she lost a part of herself, and her addiction to 'knitting'. picking up the scissors she realizes that she could have prevented all her losses if she snipped the thread. she learns to appreciate the scissors and how there should be an end to everything. sorry for posting such a long comment xD
Namy&Balazs I agree. I think Lucy is right about the 90% of the story. But at the end, I think the video wants to show that human is easily addicted to something. Somehow the scissors could cut the previous "problem", but from the video end, I think the solution scissors can become another problem / addiction. So when ppl are holding their stubbornness they are looking for problem, and when you release the stubbornness, letting it go, the things worrying you will be gone too.
But the character becomes obsessed with the scissors, therefore continuining the addiction. I think this is more about fear and the destruction of once self because we are not able to face the abyss ( edge of the mountain) and will do anything to deny it and will use any addiction possible to not face oneselfs own ??????
My mom and my aunts loved this video so much! They showed me this video when I was so young and I always loved it. Now my mom has passed away but this video will forever be one of my memories for her. Everytime I want to feel nostalgic I look at this so thank you so much!
It just shows how addiction can rob a person of their ability to reason rationally to such an extent that it can endanger their very lives,. Imagine after her wool got finished, she started knitting her hair without realising that her hair would soon run out and she would be dragged down the cliff. Addiction is horrible. It consumes you and exposes you to all kinds of dangers.
Aver Gbaa your comment “addiction can rob a person of their ability to reason rationally to such an extent that it can endanger their very lives” is very powerful. As a recovering alcoholic and drug addict I find that so true. So very true. Thank you.
I watched this with my 11-year old sister. She quickly realized that the character was addicted (to knitting) and that although she finally was able to cut her ties (her hair) with her addiction, she never really got over the addiction, because she then began cutting her nails upon contact with the scissors. She (my sister) also regarded the setting of the story as paramount to the fact that those who suffer from addiction have that kind of isolation which brings them further to danger.
@@stormfiretheog9183 I'll make it more clear because you have wrong spelling "Really? everyone knows not to do that, expect the lady who is addicted to sewing"
The sound... no one is going to appreciate that the sound in this animation is much more curated than usual? It's amazing! My congrats to Janne Jankeri.
I’ve seen this lots of times, but I recently learned that the feeling of having a “never ending to do list” is pretty common for a lot of people. And this really illustrates that well, and how the list drags you down eventually until you’ve given all you got
Watching this now, I realise; my brother would have been 12 days old when this animation came out - and what’s even funnier, me and him grew up watching this together. ☺️🤟
Coming back to this 8 months later--its definitely a memorable, intense, and very creepy short film! (Some say addiction but I read it as obsession.) The sound effects are *marvelous* and add so much tension!

She is going to pick up the scessior to stop her addiction but end up with picking the another wool.....
Thats why in the end she regrets of not using the scessior

Yw, English is not my first language 2
I dont think she was going to pick the scissors up intentionally. She doesn't even know that she has an addiction. I saw it as a way to show the viewer that no, she wont cut the knit, she intends to keep going.
Plot twist, there was someone at the bottom who just wanted a scarf
Plot twist she was a man
Imagine 🤣
“Ooh cool scarf! :D”
“WTH WHY IS IT RESISTING?!”
I like how she came back after she fell. Very mindful, very cutesy, very demure.
Moral of the story:
Use better conditioner for stronger hair
This is The Best!
LMAO
Lol imean like fuck this needs
To get more likes
Haha Soo funny 😑
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
this is really deep as her addiction to knitting is like her addiction to her ambitions. in the end she sacrifices a part of herself to her ambitions, but it still pulls her over the edge. in the end, she bit through her own hair to se herself free. she lost a part of herself, and her addiction to 'knitting'. picking up the scissors she realizes that she could have prevented all her losses if she snipped the thread. she learns to appreciate the scissors and how there should be an end to everything. sorry for posting such a long comment xD
Lucy Nie (I don't speak English. )
No, I don't think, in my view, mean the woman no never stop!
Lucy Nie your post teaches us patience as well😉
Lucy Nie was
But the character becomes obsessed with the scissors, therefore continuining the addiction. I think this is more about fear and the destruction of once self because we are not able to face the abyss ( edge of the mountain) and will do anything to deny it and will use any addiction possible to not face oneselfs own ??????
moral of story: stay away from cliffs when you knit and do not make scarfs for giants.

The actual moral of the story is sometimes you got to retire

Don't work too hard with obsession, you can miss your life and only realize it when you're old or being close to death.

Oh fuck off Rebecca he didnt say that
Wildan Aljilly if by “he”, you meant my sister, that’s a sad connotation you have there.

I’ve seen this lots of times, but I recently learned that the feeling of having a “never ending to do list” is pretty common for a lot of people. And this really illustrates that well, and how the list drags you down eventually until you’ve given all you got
Any logical person: lemme jus pull the weight back from the cliff
This lady: *KNITS AGGRESSIVELY*
She thinks against the grain
Watching this now, I realise; my brother would have been 12 days old when this animation came out - and what’s even funnier, me and him grew up watching this together. ☺️🤟
You know the old saying, never knit a scarf at the edge of a cliff.

Some people narrate this story as the woman being dumb and not using the cloth she knitted to get off the mountain. But look at the start, she was clearly there for a reason. She set her own chair.
