  • Robotire is capable of changing four tires in about 10 minutes. The company is currently in the process of rolling it out in select shops around the country.

It does not take 60 minute for a human to change 4 tires.
20 mins MAX, start to finish, one man,
Even if you use floor jacks

5 dollars per tire x 100 tires per day x 30 days per month x 9 months does not equal 250,000 dollars. It is only 135,000 dollars. I'm just doing the math. The man should be sure his numbers are correct because some people do check, and if he is not presenting things accurately it leaves people to doubt other claims being made.

The subscriber pays 5. Per tire. 20. Per car. X 25 cars. He charges customers 10. Per tire. 40 Per car x 25 = 500. Profit per day. No vacations. No days off. No training. No turnover. I just had to wait 2 days for front end alignment.
Tire shops don't have enough techs. We need robots to speed up the process.

Thread stripping, custom wheels low profile tires, tire balancing, installing and removing tire valves, ......there 80% more involved to removing and installing tires than a robot can currently do. A six figure machine that just takes a tire off is a huge waste of money. And I know that thing is not gonna put the tire back on with out marring up the wheels if their chrome. And even if you argue that it helps the technician not hurt his back. The technician will still need to place the tire on a balancer, bend over and install tire valves lift the tire onto a tire buster....i can go on an on. But ya, sure spend all that cash on a glorified tire remover. But if that's all it can do....better hope you have clients walking through the door every 20 minutes. There days when I only had 5 clients come in. And half of them just wanted a tire repair.

This "business model" and presentation is flawed and questionable in so many ways:
    - You don't need a well trained mechanic to change tires. I expect this to be close to minimum wage. Replacing an at-will minimum-wage employee with a USD 250k robot seems questionable. But it gets even better.
    - The robot costs USD 250k. According to the interview it takes nine months to recover the costs at 100 tires per day at USD 5 per tire. Even if you assume a 7 day workweek and 31 day-months, this only comes to ca. USD 140k...
    - It takes up to 20 minutes for the robot to change the tire. A person needs 60 minutes. How can you increase revenue by 4x (if there is even the demand for 4x - this is a big question), when the time is only 1/3? Nobody will pay extra to have a robot change the tires.
    - The robot still requires a person to do certain tasks, i.e. the shop will have to pay a the salary AND the fee for the robot.
    - The robot, supposedly, solves the problem of finding mechanics. Since a mechanic is still required, how does the robot solve the problem?
    - One benefit of the robot is to have a shop run 24/7, according to the interview. According to the video it is difficult to find people to change tires. Since the robot still requires one person, is't it going to be even more difficult to find a person doing tire changes at 3am? Is there demand to have tires changed at 3am?
    - How many shops have the demand for 100 tires to be changed, EVERY SINGLE DAY? Of course, there are busy times during the year, but not year-round.
This ain't going to be a success. Sorry.

I also don't see the point of it at this current time.
Electrification of our transport system and continued advancement in robotics will put a lot of mechanics out of work, it's just a fact.

@@user-kz5kn2wp5h I don't understand this comment. This is the advancement in robotics that will start/continue to but mechanics et al out of work and electric cars still have tires.

    • @samg4134
      @samg4134 4 года назад +4

@Jacob Fowler The person will not have time to do anything else: within the 20 minutes this person has to drive the car on the lift, take care of the weights on two tires, drive the car of the lift, drive the car back on the lift the other way around (note, there is only one robot on one side), take care of the weights of the other two tires and drive the car back down. This leaves minimal time between each step.
They mention an increase of revenue, i.e. they don't talk about replacing three mechanics with one mechanic as this would mean that the revenue stays the same.
Re financing: the calculation the guy makes in the video doesn't work out. At a price of USD 250k per robot this robot needs to change 50k tires before he starts making a profit and this doesn't even take R/D, financing costs, maintenance et al. into account. Only the biggest of the biggest shops will change 50'000 tires ever at all.
It is overall an extremely bad thought-out presentation.

Yeah, but the robot doesn't ever call off, take breaks, come in late, smoke meth, forget to care, or forget to torque the lugnuts properly causing someone to loose a wheel at highway speeds and have an accident. Avoided liability is a big savings for businesses.
The robots definitely are already here for our jobs. It's up to us to figure out how to avert the trend of automation resulting in fewer livable wage jobs and making everyone work themselves to death in an Amazon warehouse.

Needs to become a little faster and a little less expensive. Drop the time from 60 minutes to 30 minutes and cost from $250k to $150k and you will disrupt the tire change industry. Eventually it will become taster and cheaper, just at this iteration it is not.

What about stripped studs? What about special wheels and tires not manufactured from auto dealer? what about balancing? This is a load of expensive crap. We have a tire shop been around over 30 years and this machine can never replace a human with eyes and knowledge. If they partnered with Hunter you know it's gonna cost an arm a leg and a kidney!
