  • For decades, we've dreamed of robots that can be our companions. Now, Danielle Ishak is trying to build one. Named ElliQ, this robot is aimed at the elderly who live alone, and it's in the homes of about a dozen beta testers in the Bay Area. Ishak's task is to study these seniors' interactions with ElliQ to make sure the robot is something they actually want. This is the fifth episode of Next Jobs, a mini-documentary series about careers of the future hosted by Bloomberg Technology's Aki Ito.

    This robot is innovative and intriguing and all, butI'm MUCH more interested in Betty. She's 93 and was getting a master's degree and working in computer science at a time when very few women got any any education beyond high school, if they made it that far. She just casually mentions working in a computer lab at Harvard in the early 50s. You can tell by the way that she talks to Danielle that she's accustomed explaining things to people (maybe she's been an educator as well as a scientist) and that her mind is still very hard at work. I'm far more intrigued by her and her life than by the device. Someone should get her on Storycorps quick.

    This is an amazing idea, exactly what elderly people need. I used to work with elderly people and most of them are lonely and just want someone to talk to. Even if they have big families, they spend a lot of time alone and having a little cute robot like this could really do a lot for them to feel less isolated.

    • @ometofu
      @ometofu 5 лет назад +1

      it is the very reason that you believe this will help "a lot" thus they're so lonely. i can see you're in a room with tons of these boxes chatting nonsense... you're probably going to be so isolated and lonely that no boxes would know that you're dead. I'm glad you no longer work with elderly people, you don't know the definition of loneliness. laughable with a box equipped with lights

    • @afterthedrjay
      @afterthedrjay 4 года назад

      @@ometofu That's not the reason at all. They are already lonely. Many don't have families or have outlived their loved ones. It's often that younger people are too busy and don't engage older people much in everyday life. That happens without these robots being available (as they aren't really available anyway at this time) and probably isn't going to improve as people get even older asa demographic group. I'm sure the more energetic and outgoing seniors will not have a problem mixing with people, but many aren't as outgoing or have restraining physical reasons not to be out and about.

    I love how everyone is bashing the tech for making them more lonely, I'm sure they conciously understand it is just a robot and they don't have a full connection to the robot. The robot is there to try and give them a random fact or joke to cheer them up a little bit. Think about the possibilities of this, this can be used to help understand the complexities of loneliness and depression by seeing how these people act over long periods of time, the robot could actually use this to indicate to friends, family or even professionals the person's current state and if they are in need of a chat or some attention. This could eventually be developed into a full companion shame everyone is bashing it into oblivion

    THIS IS JUST SAD. I am an AI and Robotics researcher but I will feel like a failure and a bad child if my parents were left to a robot. These technologies are there to help us for carrying out mundane tasks and not replace humans. Loneliness can be decreased only by human to human contact. Those elderly people will feel more bad if they find out just some toy is being given to them to play with like how we give it to children. I mean they are grown up and intelligent people, we cannot treat them like children just because they are not physically and mentally strong as they were in the past. I hope we invent tech to connect two lonely people.

    What they're doing is admirable. But I have dealt with severe loneliness several times in life and talking to a robot I'm sure would have made it worse and made me feel even more shi!t about myself. But I am of course not elderly, so I showed this to my grandmother and she found it ridiculous "Why are the young folks doing everything they can to stop us from talking to each other, it's also not a real conversation" she said. I wish them luck, but I don't see it helping nor happening.

    • @larryjeffers8995

      I think it's only fun for people at first, then people will get bored with it and then sure, it can make people feel worse. They ought to factor in the fad factor when estimating how many people will enjoy talking to it.

      it's not meant to replace human contact. it's a silly assistant at this stage, only relevant for the generation not capable of using skype and other simple programs to contact others. my mother has no problem using skype at 71 years old, so her generation doesnt need this for communication, but rather for simplifying everyday tasks with voice commands, which are already available from google assistant etc.

    I don't think these young ladies even comprehend that robotics may make a senior's situation worse. This is more about showcasing the young lady to boost her career instead of truly helping the aged. If Danielle really wanted to help seniors or in her words "help humans interact with more humans, help humans in general. Not pull humans away from humans..." They would have had psychologists involved and performed surveys and would have easly come to the conclusion that a personal digital assistant is not going to make a person less lonely - it may, in fact, do the opposite. If I knew the only way I would have contact during most of the week would be only with a machine I would get extremely depressed as human contact is the only way to help another person out of isolation, loneliness and depression. This young lady may have done well in getting an education, but there lacks the emotional intelligence to understand the human spirit - it would have been far better for her to network these independent seniors through having an echo or google assistant with a very large ipad so they can easily use facetime and have increased contact with their counterparts. A senior doesn't want to be fed facts and have a response of "No Problem" - if they had really done their homework they would have ensured that the responses were specific to the target audience. I don't know of anyone over 75 that says "No Problem"

    The idea of millions of lonely people is paradoxical. The solution seems obvious. But I retired 6 months ago and now I'm experiencing it. People just don't get together. I don't know why. My theory is that, for one thing, we don't want to intrude in other people's lives, so we don't keep in touch (or "reach out" to use the modern term). Also, people are typically self absorbed. We're not interested in discussing things we're not experiencing. This makes for boring conversation. This would suggest that a machine that's seems totally interested in me, for example, could be beneficial because it's almost impossible to find a person that can stand talking about me all the time. I have friends that call occasionally to chat, but once they've finished telling me what they have to say the conversation is over. ElliQ could certainly be an improvement over that.

      Evi, its built in most likely, its a minor detail. but a plastic box should never replace humans. where are this old white woman's children, grand kids, nephews.etc..

    I would get real annoyed with the "No problem" response. A simple OK would be so much better.

    Good idea and definitely needed, but at this stage these are just very crude little expensive gadgets. Fit for probably people who are already rich and can afford. Not something for the masses. Use some of that VC money to do good for the masses who need better solutions.

    Modern computers are designed to filter out quantum noise from influencing their operation. Sensibility to quantum noise as may be the case in the brain of animals and humans and is maybe a necessary condition for a soul to have a moment to moment influence in the workings of a real physical companion? Maybe real companionship of a physical kind cannot be achieved with current computers which unlike brains does not have a very thin cell membrane with a high field strengths over it where quantum events can affect pulses of AC current in many frequencies in many places?
    Maybe there is super human intelligence in the 4th spatial dimension having immediate access to all positions in 3D spatial space? Then there is the time dimension with relativity, entanglement and quantum uncertainty, the many worlds interpretation and maybe no human is close to have figured most of it out?

    I love it and never had children. I need it in about 10 years; just hope i can afford it on a fixed income. Can it help remind you to take your pills? Can it remind you of doctors appointments and when uber will be at my house? Can it tell me if my uber driver is safe for elderly? Can it help to remind me to eat certain things the doctor wants me to eat or diabetic reminders to check blood?Remember all this while building her please. Yes, conversation is key! But first please get affordable net for farm people. Huguesnet sucks all my income. Some months I have to postpone my net for a month or two just to pay normal bills. Love the water thing. Also, if it reminds the elderly to turn off the stove. Lol My parents almost burned down the house and my father in law just recently almost did the same thing. I think that will happen to me and if I pass first it is more than likely too happen to my husband. Hope not! Lol

    Young people are lonely also, if they do not continue to learn and online interact. You cannot trust everyone in your home, due to the greed to kill you for assets, insurance, and this is family.
