Noah Ready-Campbell believes that the future of the construction industry lies in construction robotics, but it won’t look like a hard-hat-wearing C-3PO.
His company has developed a unique guidance system using AI that powers autonomous construction equipment. The system can be installed in off-the-shelf equipment from Caterpillar, John Deere, and other major manufacturers.
With advances like this, we could soon have a job site on which a single operator is operating up to 10 machines at a time, keeping projects moving around the clock. In doing so, a job that would have otherwise taken months could be completed in weeks.

It wont really work it can deact like this rocks this dirt this is mud thear is a bulder in the ground and it can dig no more and really its only good for gaint open space its a waste of time beacuse people can move faster while opertaing but nice try giving it a go it will work with small machines like a chop saw on a remote but you will wait a hole day for something to be diged ther is a reason beacuse it just dosent work space and everything and cost and how much to run this stuff mattiance for manichinne and equiment you need to up keep is not going to be cheap at all
I also see this to up the cost more on jods sites just to mattiane all the equiment and what if it breaks now i need a guy to look at it dose not work
There the software for thAt so yes it will work very very soon with many countries working together USA China Europe India Japan etc.

When this can be validated to reduce risk as they have been proving we can really start to re-imagine what design solutions are possible. Could you imagine coordinating 2 or more booms to hoist large custom-made structural members in perfect unison into place? Assuming semi-automatic solutions that extend existing design/engineering thinking and give more time and energy back to designers is the way forward. Who knows? Based on this type of AI it could feed machine learning to help us re-imagine areas where we have substantial waste and have been overlooking it for generations.
“Robots don’t automate jobs, they automate tasks”
Unfortunately, that’s the engineering perspective, not the business perspective. A business person looks at opportunity cost and if they don’t have a task in place for leftover workers then they let go of them instead of re-training. It’s the main disconnect that we see in the automated workforce.

It's a fair point. And yet--if robots are replacing our jobs (and they are), why are there still more jobs than ever? After all, each of the excavators in its day replaced dozens of people with shovels or simpler tools, yet there's currently a shortage of construction workers. The problem is that people have depended on labor jobs for too long, however our technology and innovation is allowing us to progress faster, but in turn, requires smarter minds and more innovation. Therefore, education needs to be increased and people need to start learning problem-solving and critical thinking skills
Freethink Eric Lotze already beat me to it, but yes CGP Grey’s video addresses that point. There’re also the pre and post pandemic real unemployment rates to consider. I’m not even against automation, I’m just an ME student with factory worker parents who’s trying to be nuanced about this. There are some real concerns to be addressed and I’m not sure we have the answer yet.

We at Mortenson have been partnered with Built for a few years now. For low dexterity work, like excavating a round hole in rural areas for wind turbines where we can't get skilled operators to these rural areas. We are using an excavator, compactor and a dozer, all three autonomously working together to dig, move earth and grade. When you think about it from a safety and bridging the gap of the growing shortage of skilled labor! This is not about removing humans from this work, it is repurposing these workers for smarter or higher dexterity work. PS. Many of the segments in this video are real Mortenson wind project sites. This is the future now!

@@mrclm55customers don't request is. It's how you can land a contract for 200 turbine holes spread over a couple rural counties. Then if the owner ever goes to the site they see how it's done.
Obviously it's a good reputation move to introduce yourself and the tech so in thw future thwy know you can deliver. Say if something like a health emergency requires half the country to stay at home.

_"we think of the robot as a force multiplier"_ - Yes, you've very good at only seeing things from the perspective that benefits you. This directly replaces operators, who train for years specifically to this job alone, it is NOT mundane, it is very complex. Just like autonomous haulage or supermarket self-checkouts, you'll have 1 operator overseeing multiple vehicles.
It's they way these guys try to dress it up that annoys me, lets face the fact that tech is here, its is amazing, it is progress but it will cause a problem of people being put out of work.
This guy was one of those kids that hated having to go work with his dad in the summer. He couldn't wait to figure out how to keep from having to do some work so he could get back to playing PlayStation.
This technology could be used for terraforming. We know how to do it, the CCC did it in Arizona during the Great Depression with the Tucson Swales. Men and mules turned dust-bowl desert into oases that have lasted 90 years with no maintenance. Set up autonomous sun-powered machines in the west coast of each of the great deserts, and set them to work their way east. Let's figure out how to fix this world before we try to do it on mars.

At Mortenson, we partnered with BuiltRobotics to test and validate the use of autonomous heavy equipment for the past couple of years. WHY? We are trying to solve the mega trend of the shortage of skilled craft and Operators in rural environment which are away from the workforce populations. We are working on low dexterity work that a machine can do which is far higher value then having a skilled operator taken away from high dexterity work (more complicated work best done by humans) so we move earth specifically to build clean energy - wind/solar projects. Many of the scenes in this video were taken from Mortenson energy jobsites. It's not about replacing people, but augmenting the workforce so we can apply the tribal knowledge and high skillset on the right work, vs. having machines do the tedious work at night while workers are with their families.
Ah yes, 'augmenting the workforce' and applying 'tribal knowledge' - whatever tribal knowledge means in relation to a construction job. Dude, you've swallowed too many business efficiency seminar powerpoints. I'm a civil engineer, I can see your bs a mile off. Of course it's only a very minor impact on jobs at the moment. Lift your head up from your LinkedIn profile for a second to think about the wider effects over the next 10 - 20 years.
Soon enough we´ll see robots like Boston Dynamics replacing construction workers even more so.

1) People don't want to work those jobs anymore. 2) No one can beat machines at repetitive tasks.
Get more intelligent. Smashing rocks open is not a job for manual laborers in the modern world either. If you want archaic construction, have at it. The rest of the world is moving on.

@@tricallyourmama Except for the fact that this pandemic among other considerations have indeed forced the market to evolve and change. The fact is automation is an undeniable event that has been occurring for years.
Its not that the jobs are mindless. Its that they're repeatable. If they're repeatable, they can be automated. The hope is for folks to learn more technical skills.
Bank tellers had jobs about 30 years ago until the advent of computers. Circuit switched operators had jobs too. The internet would not exist if automated switches were never created. Things change. I don't make the rules. This is what's coming and people are in for a surprise if they expect something else.

In construction faster aint always better
This technology is absolutely inevitable. The technology has been in place for years. The market system demands it. Technological unemployment is a certainty. This is not to say the world should live in poverty but a new social economic system one of technology not consumption needs to be established.
Manage the planet/habitat the way you would manage a construction site/project.
Years back I watched over 50-100 acre cut and fill property development projects. I often imagined satellite guided miniature (4yrd) dumptrucks and excavators and dozers operating.
I think this system and others that I've seen are great and they WILL replace people. Tje problem is not everybody has the aptitude to get into IT.
I work in construction and most tradesmen become tradesmen because their good with their hands.
The other thing I've noticed about construction over the past 10-15 years is that the plans and specifications we get onsite are getting worse and worse and the engineers and architects are doing less and leaving tradesmen and site people to fill in the blanks, the reality is robots are only as good as the person programming them. I b erlieve these machines are great but even the video shows them working on there own in a big wide open space, the reality is most construction work takes place in cramped sites in the middle of a city.
I think construction will eventually become more automated but you have to change a lot of peoples attitides.

It's going to be really hard to get this accepted and used mainstream.The people in charge of construction products like predictable.They have to win lowest bids repeatedly.If they can't fully trust in the work getting done they can't bid.If there is any problem with the computer not working/ it's actual ,practical capabilities at all,which causes even small delays in production they will have software ripped out by themselves and a qualified human in the seat faster than you can say unemployed robotics,and they won't be coming back.And even on simple" tasks I don't think they will have the split second awareness and deduction making,and control needed .You'll end up needing one operator to run one AI tractor full time,which sounds more expensive to me.Maybe it would work if you have no skilled operator and a foreman can get a task done( possibly done).Even still that would be expensive tech waiting around for the "easy work" and still costing money.Good luck,I think itllfind a niche,but it won't be used widely .

Social programs and Capitalism aren't mutually exclusive, it's also known as Social Democracy, plus automation makes for higher efficiency output and cheaper products/services.
Jobs are made just as much as jobs get lost. You just have to know where to look and how to think. Our industry needs tremendous innovation to keep up with the rising demand and lack of skilled labor to operate different points along the project development life cycle.

@@TheObserversTV honestly, as a heavy equipment operator, I can tell you there is nothing efficient about anything happening in this video. The machines look like first time operators. I assume they will get better in time, but at this point they are nowhere even close to the production of a well-skilled operator less than 1%

It doesn't. I'm a contractor that's fighting to get this tech but all the units are going to large national companies now.
There is going to be a labor shortage in construction for at lease the 15 years. We're short millions of homes and the number gets bigger every year as we fall behind.

The problem is there are a lot of dumb people who don't want to doanthong that requires much thought. There perfectly happy with mundane. I have always be one who makes tasks simpler by implementation of machine or tool to reduce human error.

Such automation makes no sense. I'm an automaton myself and I know how it works. Sometimes repairing an automatic system can take several days and be very expensive. These are people who have never worked on such machines. Anything can happen. A stone, a bomb, a broken pin, a bent piston, or even a broken hose - a fire in the machine

As an engineer and technology advocate, I really don’t see the point of this, I really don’t! Usually you automate a task to improve efficiency, such as in batch and bulk manufacturing etc This actually hinders efficiency lmfao! WTF! Not everything that can be automated, should be automated
My fear is that decreasing the costs of construction increases the construction activity and therefore destroying our environment even more.

The focus will be put on urban areas, I think that the future of rural areas will be reduced and urban areas will increase, so instead of having 50 towns/villages and a moderate sized city in 2020, you will have 0 towns/villages and a condensed/larger (smart, clean-energy) city by 2050, we would have an overall better environment.

If we used this to put a roof over everyone, it would be great. There's no other excuse to have a sad problem like homelessness in our societies, but pure greed. This could make cheap houses affordable for a lot of people. It's a matter of letting capitalism or humanity win. It's definetely up to us.
Do you really think the robotic companies investing millions to develop these robots will make the houses using these robots and then sell those houses for cheap for a "greater good"?
construction is the last bastion of unskilled labour. as it is, we have a shortage of *entry level* jobs, even if overall job market is okay. having one operator deny 5-10 blokes in steelies food, shelter and liberty, will only make our society more unequal, more only built for the upper class, not building a future for all.
as far as i'm concerned, as a very techy, very excited enthusiast, this project is just not worth deploying. mind you, researching everything is worth it, but the founder should scale this down to an enthusiast level project, not a professional one. something a farmer can rent to build a new shed, dig out a pond or little projects like that. heck, i don't like copyright and patents, but go balls to the wall with this. make taking jobs away proprietary. don't keep digging the trench between the rich and the poor, even if its with cool tech.

I get people are anxious about automation and it's effects on jobs but I think they are looking at it the wrong way, more automation means more production and more efficiency, it accelerates growth , it will result in more jobs also it will shift jobs to to more service centered occupations, plus it will make products effordable, more automation means better future for more people globally.
And what happens to the operators, they end up unemployed and the world becomes lazy.
What is the point of living you know there are pepole like me that actually like to drive trucks and operate equipment you say there won’t be a job loss but you are lying to us for shure

Any company that goes to automation should have to pay the equivalent of a person's wage in tax to supplement those who'll be out of work.
