When Teddy spoke of fighter’s who deserve more recognition than they ever got I think of Charley Burley. He wouldn’t sign with corrupt promoters of the time so never got the title shot he deserved. He was a welterweight/middleweight who often had to fight light heavy weight just to get fights because so many fighters at his natural weight were kept clear of him. Archie Moore and George Benton both say he was the best fighter they ever saw bar none. Maybe sometime Teddy will let the fans know some of his history.

....About 50 times of watching Gatti Ward round9 and still get really excited.
I like watching from 4-10 but I get it the ninth is good. Micky had just taken so much damage in the first four. He got tuned up and landed two liver shots and it changed and they slugged it out. Fight should have been stopped imo at end of 8th

taken out of context, you don't get the full effect of the Ward liver shot. Zab Judah ,right here on YT, now says that when he was hit w/ that same shot by Ward, the pain was such that between rds.,he told his Dad, "stop the fight, I might have a busted rib" (undefeated at the time ). it didn't happen, tho. Judah survived by dancing a while, and won, ribs in tact. you can see Gatti trying still, to deal w/ the pain here ,when he stands up .Mickey hurt several guys w/ that secret weapon.

I remember watching this live at home. I just happened to tune in just as the fight started. I watched it and by round 5 you knew you were seeing something special. Round 9 is incredible. I think it's greatness is properly magnified when you know the history of Gatti and Ward and how many great fights they'd both already been in. This fight was boxing on its highest level where it transcended itself to place boxing hasn't seen since.

Aye. We are indeed very fortunate to be priviledged to have Teddy educate and entertain us. What a man. a Professor of Boxing par excellence.
Bye the Audiobook, it’s great to just listen to while busy doing stuff, especially shopping. Teddy reading it makes it more like a story being told instead of a book, he makes it personal. I never suggest anything about spending money but this is really worth it.
Only Teddy would advertise the 5 best rounds in boxing history and end up giving us 15! This is why we love him.

I watch all of these, I'm a huge fan of this channel and its content. I don't know if you'll ever read this or what not, but I would love an episode about best defensive boxers, underrated boxers or for you to at least talk about Nicolino Locche, who is extremely underrated and never really mentioned. Thank you for providing content at times like these and I appreciate Teddy's and Ken's honesty on the sport of boxing.

Firpo was actually down 7 times in the first round and Dempsey 2. Firpo was down twice more in the 2nd!

Great episode to revisit. I was reminded of Joe Louis and Billy Conn, Mcquigan, and the scandal of the tampered gloves done by P.Lewis. Thanks again Teddy and Ken.
The biggest omission here is the first round of Liston-Ali I. There are rare moments in sports where someone comes along and does something so special it stands entirely apart. The emergence of Babe Ruth. The run-scoring of Don Bradman on his first tour of England. The soccer player Diego Maradonna in his prime. Usain Bolt at the Beijing Olympics. The night a 22-year-old kid tore up the rulebook on heavyweight boxing and beat the most fearsome fighter in history.
Some of mine that I can still remember. Barrera v morales 1 all the rounds were great. Corrales v Castillo all the rounds were great but round 10 is an all time class. Gatti v ward 1 all the rounds WERE UNBELIEVABLE but round 9 is the GREATEST round I've ever seen. HOLYFIELD v Bowe 1 UNBELIEVABLE fight but round 10 is what BOXING is all about.
A good episode and Teddy picks my two favourites right off the bat. As to the Firpo Dempsey round there were multiple knockdowns in it. Many people think Demsey got knocked down once but there is a second that is always edited out, you see Demseys knee touch the canvas then he is back up (there is a film with it not cut out but the version with it edited is always shown). Firpo was a giant and a tough man who took quite a beating, he got up many times until it was just too much. Classic fight.

Thank You Teddy for mentioning the McGuigan vs Pedroza fight where “Danny Boy” was sung...McGuigan was the special advisor for my favorite ever boxing movie “ The Boxer” starring Daniel Day Lewis...there is a very moving club fight scene where “Danny Boy” is sung at the beginning of the fight in an unsuccessful attempt to bring peace to the rowdy, divided hometown crowd.
I love Teddy, and I mean that. In the way that a Son could love his father.
I didn’t have a father and he decided to have no part in my elder brother’s life or mine.
Teddy loves and stands by truth...and that takes balls. If I could pick a father out of all the people I’ve met in my life so far... I’d choose Teddy. (I’m 46 by the way).
I've not long known about teddy atlas but he sure is a awesome individual. His podcast partner seems cool too.

Gatti/ Ward is boxing personified. It never gets old the only fight I’ve ever watched where you’re rooting for both fighters about every 25 seconds you do you go from Gatti to ward. You can see each fighter changing their strategy and making small adjustments continually over and over I doubt it will ever be surpassed skill and will. Gatti For the most part was a one handed fighter for most of his career I own all of his fights on DVD. Breaks his hand five fights in a row. Gatti and ward will never be topped. Two of the best guys to ever do it

I know its new so it doesnt have the lasting legacy. But AJ vs Klitschko was one of the best heavyweight fights of all time as was Fury Wilder 1.

For me personally the only round I ever saw live that had me on my feet jumping up and down in my living room alone ....was rd 12 of Toney vs Jirov....for an exhausting Toney to finally floor Jirov with 15 seconds left after being pushed to his absolute limits was boxing mastery in its highest form!!
Everyyyyyone who ever mentions Billy Collins and Resto only mentions that Resto took padding out of the gloves. At the end of the HBO documentary assault in the ring, Resto admits that he used so much plaster of Paris he couldn't open his gloves. Not only took the horse hair out. The worst part was the plaster of paris

42:35 - There is one round that might have altered the course of two careers more than the last round of Holmes - Norton.
The last round of Chavez - Taylor. Meldrick Taylor had that fight won. All he had to do was answer Richard Steele. He did not.
Meldrick Taylor was never the same afterward and really never had a big payday or a notable opponent other than the Terry Norris fight (which Taylor lost by TKO) and the rematch against Chavez in 1994 (which Taylor also lost).
After the second Chavez fight, Taylor did not fight again for twenty-three months. Taylor's record after the second Chavez fight was six wins and five losses.
Chavez went had two losses to Oscar, Tzuyu and some other notables, but made a load of money during the years after the March 17, 1990 first fight against Taylor.
If Taylor wins that fight, he earns a huge payday against Terry Norris or gets a rematch against Chavez.
People forget how good Pedraza was as a fighter bad champion...and I remember wanting him to lose to anybody because me and my dad fumed at the gift decision he got against Rocky Lockridge....
Re: Cassius Clay's knockdown. It wasn't the first time Ali was knocked down in his career as Teddy claimed, but the second. The first was also the result of a left hook, but delivered by Sonny Banks in 1962. And Dundee didn't buy Ali 5 or 7 minutes of time to recover, the gloves were never replaced, they were taped, buying Ali a total of about 8 extra seconds.

I was part of Stevie Cruz’ camp and actually used to go back and forth to Belfast while scouting McGuigan. I remember we talking to Atlas once over there we were the only two Americans in the gym…it was a short conversation. He is right though the people showed out for McGuigan…but it’s crazy I can remember Teddy in Belfast.

Just an idea lads, really enjoyed this podcast but maybe teddy could do a list similar to this, it's slightly touched upon in this anyway but maybe great fighters through the years that maybe never reached the very very top but great fighters in their own right. Maybe a guy from each decade or something like that. A nice history lesson for fight fans, love the show lads keep it up. 👍
Archie moor vs Yvon Durelle 1. Moor was felled three times in round one. Thats the round I pick. (and once again in round five, but then dropped Durelle in round 10 and won by a knockout in the 11th).

I always say if the good die young Arturo Gatti proves that fight, it was incredible the ability and rising to the occasion ward showed in those fights. Arturo was great as well.
I'll give a shout to Ray Mancini versus Art Frias. 1982 I think it was. WBA Lightweight title. It ended in the 1st round but it was a real war!

the fight with archie moore against durell teddy mentioned was pure insanity, one of those knockdowns archie suffered i believe the 2nd one, it looked like archie got shot with a 30 yard 6, he froze in mid air and landed the same, much like getting hit with a stun gun! people need to google that fight, incredible showing of how great archie moore really was.

Just FYI to the podcast team in the chapter thumbnails, its Joe LOUIS. Joe Lewis was no slouch either, but was a karate champion.
Teddy, We were at a time the greatest country , that is not really true anymore, and has not been for some time. That said , everything else that teddy said is spot on.

Thank you so much for this episode and especially, as marginal as it might have been to the original aim of this episode, for telling it like it is about Panama Lewis and his shady tactics. It is said that it was crushed asthma pills in that “mixed” bottle.
