Recently, I tried a new watercolor technique for regaining highlights in watercolor painting, and I want to share it with you!
If you've watched many of my painting videos, you know that, traditionally, I will use some white gouache at the end of my scene. I have nothing against using gouache, but recently I tried scratching pigments off the paper with an X-acto knife instead.
Check out today’s video where I show you how I used this method on a few of my paintings, give you a few tips to apply this technique yourself, and cover some pros and cons of scratching.

I love your restraint and considered approach, rather than getting carried away scratching into many areas your light touch just adds the sparkle back. I enjoy watching your finesse :-). Greetings from New Zealand

This is really cool! I like your precision.
I had a painting where I lost the light and my toddler then ripped it, so I did everything I could to try to save it. Scratching some dark water was one of the things I did. I didn't have a good blade, so I just went wild on it with a kitchen knife. 😅

I've used an X-acto knife for adding sparkle to water, snow on branches, ocean or waterfall spray, etc. And, I also use white gouache or acrylic. I find both work well, but do find the knife more precise.

Nice one, Matt. I often use a knife and it's a great solution.

It might work well for whiskers on animals, fur, or facial hair, too

I love your clips and all of the emails too. I keep them in a folder and refer to them frequently. Thank you for the effort you put into them. Much love from Tasmania.

it was very effective. I will be trying it soon

I've done this before, yes. And I really know what you mean by 'it's permanent.' I've also used scratching to make dark lines while the paint is still wet. So, you do have to have it all the way dry if you're trying for highlights. Thanks for this!

This is a technique which had been used by the amazing JMW Turner. Very interesting topics indeed! Can be used (carefully) even on hahnemuehle 200g sketchbook

I use the scraping method myself from time to time. But instead of an exacto knife, I use a 55" two-handed claymore broadsword. But don't feel bad. It's not a size competition.

I like this idea. I have also heard that a credit card edge will work, too. I have not tried either.
Question, I know you said that we are scraping the top layer off of the paper, but I am afraid that if you looked closely, would you be able to see the scratches/marks on the paper? Would that distract from the finished picture?
I haven't finished a picture since I started (lockdown learner), because I have a fear that I will mess up my painting if I keep layering, so I leave them unfinished.
Thank you for the content and your style. I like/admire your techniques and approaches you take to painting.
I need to work on not being so precise with my painting. How would I loosen up my painting?

Great - very effective. I would suggest a scalpel rather than one of these cheap retractable blades though - more control - and there are lots of different sorts of scalpel blades to choose from

I do it sometimes, but yeah, no going back once you scratch that paper.
