Mad respect for Matpat, he has 3 other channels to work on and a live channel as well. Thank you for making HTTYD theories, this show made my childhood to this day.
It should be mentioned that, for quite a long time, the Komodo dragon’s deadly bite was actually quite a mystery. The inside of the lizard’s mouth is so full of dangerous bacteria and stuff that we couldn’t tell if it was the venom or illness that was deadlier and thus the true power of their bite. It was only relatively recently that we gained the technology to look into their venom better and discover that, although the germs in the Komodo dragon’s mouth are certainly strong enough to cause fatal illness, the venom is much worse.
I can remember the days when nature channels worked on the theory that it was the bacteria in a Komodo dragon's mouth that slowly killed the animals, and they just followed it around until it was unable to walk. It's so much fun seeing the advancements in knowledge and understanding happening within such a small period of time
Until you recently learned that their prey getting sick and dying is the result of infecting their own wounds, not venom or others. Their main prey? Water buffalo. Where do they seek cover? Mud pits.
I don't like how the comments focus only on Matpat, let's just take a moment to appreciate all the staff behind that despite having different work styles and ideas come together to provide cohesive content for us, thank you to all Team Theorist for mantaining consistent quality uploads in the 5 channels

God am I happy to see u still making HTTYD theories. HTTYD was literally my entire childhood. The movies, shows, and games Edit: Yes, I love the original books too
HTTYD actually acknowledges the gas build up into fire breath as something dragons do. In the first movie, after hiccup and Toothless fly for the first time, a type of dragon called terrible terrors start to spit fire at toothless by building up gas into their mouth. But tootless shoots a small spark into the mouth before the dragon is ready, causing the gas to explode in the dragon's mouth. They show that because it sets up the ending of the final battle, where hiccup and toothless use the same trick to beat the red death (the big bad dragon).
Man I used to spend days brainstorming about the biology of these fictional creatures. Ecological niches that they'd fill, the roles they'd took in history and our culture.

I agree, the books are so much different. And the books actually fit a lot more with the mixing-chemicals-for-firebreath theory with 'fire holes' in the dragons throats being perfect for it.
This video topic is actually something I've thought about for a few months for a personal project of mine. The way I've been rationalizing the Bewilderbeast's ice attack is by using super cooled pure water, like those videos of freezing cold bottles of liquid water flash freezing when they get hit. I had imagined their biology could filter out particles from the water (which they could use for nutrition to help get so big like a whale) and then store that pure water in an organ somewhere to be spat out later. Them being a tidal class dragon might also help with this as having the water all around them could help cushion the super cooled water and keep it from freezing inside them. They could potentially control the amount of water they release too to give a little puff of water that would freeze into ice crystals in the air almost like snow like we see with Hicup and Valka
I think MatPat has redeemed himself here with this one. His last HTTYD theory was about how you can't actually train a dragon but proving they can breathe fire has brought him back into my good graces.
I'd love to see a part 2 to this video, talking about other dragons from the franchise, like the Fireworms, the Death Song, the Gronkle, the Flightmare, the Changewing, and the Razorwhip.

My favourite part of the dragon breathes in HTTYD is how even dragons of the same breath type produce it different. A Nadder has a fire breath that looks like a large volume of sparks while a Nightmare has a typical flame breathe.
Not many of the dragons from the movie are actually in the books, (which I prefer) but I would love to see a monstrous nightmare in the books, just l would love to see an actual small toothless in the movies. (Toothless is a seadragonus giganticus maximus at a very young age, and seadragonus are tiny when they are young, tiny when they are old, and ABSOLUTELY giant when in the prime of their life).
I feel like lightning breath would be less of a single beam of lightning since, like matpat said, the dragon wouldnt have the ability to alter your charge, just it's own but to such a degree that it would be more like lightning everywhere randomly, trading electrons with literally anything and everything it could.
For a visual example, see King Gidorah in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. There's one scene where Gidorah absorbs electricity from a nearby transformator station, and then fires a lightning storm that destroys all planes around it.
I sometimes like to write down some fantasy dragons just for fun, maybe sprinkle in some science but it’s still just a quick pastime. I recently wrote down about a dragon that first sprays its victim with copper dust (again, just a hobby lol) and THEN throws electric charges at them. Basically just ensuring that at least some shock reaches their prey.
Along with the diversity of dragons in the HTTYD franchise, I also love the little quirks of behavior and biology in each dragon, like how all dragons have a limited amount of fire they can spew before they run out, how small dragons like to chase lights much like a cat chasing a laser, or how dragons can combust internally if the gas in their mouth is ignited before they're ready to fire.
So happy to see Matt take the time to go over a relatively older series. Great to see such a large part of my childhood theorized lol. Also Hiccup being a nerd over the physiology of dragons already is kinda funny
One interesting thing is that the franchise acknolges that the different dragons have their breath attacks as different chemical reactions such as toothless shoots an oxygen based plasma ball, the monsterous nightmare lights a gel based secreation, and the nadder has a magnesseum based flame
Hi MatPat. Great video from the whole team as usual, I love Dragons too. Something to add about fire dragons, in the movie Reign of Fire starring Christian Bale and Matthew McConaughey. The dragons in that movie have very detailed biological details that explain how they breathe fire. In their necks, they have two glands that produce different chemicals. They then spit the two chemicals out at the same time. And when it combines and gets exposed to the air, it ignites forming napalm. I always loved the dragons in Reign of Fire, and the way they were designed. If you guys on the channel haven't seen it yet. I recommend it. It's in my opinion, very underrated. Maybe you guys could make a video on the movie sometime. Keep up the good work and have a great rest of the day.

What I love about how to train your dragon is how much detail goes into it The story has a lot of detail, Designs have a lot of detail, And most importantly the dragons have a lot of detail. You can tell that they researched some animals to put into these dragons, by appearance, powers, and behavior. Overall, I love movies that actually care about plot, detail, and characters.
The ice breath explanation makes a lot of sense, considering that the Bewilderbeast is a Tidal class dragon. The creators really throught this through!
Matpat and all his channels feel like smarter and a waaaaay better mythbusters, where the 'myths' are so much more cool and do not involve using dynamite every two episodes😂
Its going to be hard to get an actor for Hiccup, especially with how iconic Jay Baruchel's voice is for Hiccup across all HTTYD media I can still see the OG VA like Gerard Butler (Stoic) being a good fit for live action Stoic but its hard for the other characters with how iconic they've been portrayed in the animations
We don’t want it- I think the Nine Realms is proof enough that the OG stuff was the perfect franchise and put a bow on the ending nicely. I feel like anything new will dampen and cheapen an already amazing thing 😭
In the bonuses of the secpnd movie's dvd, we actually get a closer look at the dragon's abilities, including their breaths. For example, we learn that fire-breathing dragons like Astrid's use magnesium, others molten rocks, and others simply turn massive amounts of water into ice directly as it exits their mouth. Pretty neat i'd say
And what's scarier about Komodo dragons, they can stalk their prey for miles upon miles. There's a story I heard where a guy was on an island very close to Indonesia and he unfortunately caught the attention of a Komodo dragon and it just kept stalking him even after several miles where he had to climb a tree. And even then I'm pretty sure they're great climbers.
Baby komodo dragons spend their young lives in trees until they get larger! Adults would make an easy snack of them and the adults are usually to heavy to get up into the branches the babys sit on
@Bruh🧨 i'm pretty sure the flightmare was explained to not actually do it with fear if i remember correctly. a real life explanation would probably be some sort of nerve agent? (eg topically-acting cholinergic blockers)
As as father of 4, I can honestly say I always enjoy these movies and the series with my kids...because of the science. The writers of this IP are fantastic at doing their homework.
In regards to the Electric attacks, I like the way that Monster Hunter handles it for the elder dragon Namielle. Namielle uses electric attacks by generating electricity through its skin but it hits it long distance by covering its surroundings in a highly conductive liquid it secretes. It can then charge its electricity through the liquid to shock anything and everything in the liquid.
OH MY GOD IVE WAITED FOR SO SO SO LONG FOR AN HTTYD EPISODE !!! Also the “we’re theorists, it’s an occupational hazard” reference to the “we’re Vikings, it’s an occupational hazard” is awesome!! Httyd is my hyperfixation right now so this is AWESOME
at last...a scientific episode. not as much calculating and formula as in the good old days, but still far better than those "let's basically just talk about this" episodes. pls keep it up!
No, it is a let's talk about this episode. Thunderdrums don't create the sound by closing their mouths. They create them by opening their mouths and screaming with their giant lungs
Idk if it’s just me, but I think fantasy series like HTTYD are even more enjoyable if they have a scientific explanation, but still keep an air of mystery. (EW BOTS! Sorry I hate those guys)

Did Desti get resurrected and brainwashed into a mindless assassin? Is the SMG4 universe apart of the Marvel multiverse? What will happen if the two crossed over? Is there a 7th hidden infinity stone in the SMG4 universe? Did T-mobile collaborate with Stark industries? Are the SMGs a variation of the Eternals? What is the true power of the Avatar? How did the memes really became stupid in the first universe (SMG0 universe)? And what another SMG4 x Marvel questions are waiting to be answered?”
i absolutely adore the httyd worldbuilding. maybe next httyd episode you can talk about their abilities! like how the light fury can camoflauge with their plasma blasts and how the skrill can cover itself in lightning. also maybe some details about the slitherwing dragon! its scales are coated in a poison and id love to see a deep dive into what is actually in this poison.
It is a cool decision that the Zippleback’s two heads serve a fire breathing purpose, one breathes flammable gas (probably methane) while the other uses it’s teeth to create a spark and ignite the gas
10:18 except the stunning effect is caused by more than just the sound waves, and the deadliness is caused by the rapid movement in water which causes a superheated pocket of space that instantly collapses in on itself, which requires the shrimp be in water to produce such effects as air is not dense enough.
Loved this! He should go into detail on all the fire dragons breath too though, because in the show most of them are made up of different fire like Stormsly’s fire is magnesium based
There are some things from the Race to The Edge series which I would love to see theories about such as: death song' amber attack or how deadly Naders actually use Magnesium, Slither wings constant venom production or the frightmare's fear attack, how gronkles can survive eating only rocks or how the eruptedons can survive on only eating lava, how the submeripper can create whirlpools ond how gronkle steel is made or Razorwhip's metal skin, how the smothering smoke breath can attack and disguise itself with smoke, how the Sandbuster can make glass or sentinel can become statues, how the buffolord can rapidly expand how the shadow wing are so dimorphic and how dramillon can use any breath attack they see
the sandbuster is actually a really cool one, i theorise that it eats sand melts it in its body and blasts it back out as molten glass that cools super quickly
1:20 You got your standard fire, as well as ice, literal lightning, acid, boiling water And then, “AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” **insert Big Enough cowboy-screaming meme**
MATPAT, PLEASE READ THIS: Okay, so I have a new film theory video for you, it's about the Super Mario Movie. A couple things that I think should be mentioned is that #1: It was all a dream. Through the first part of the movie it is real life, but when the dinner incident happens and Mario goes to his room and starts playing videogames, the dream part happens. I think that when Luigi was talking to him he fell asleep, because while luigi is talking to him, all of his dreams come true after. First, they had a chance to save Brooklyn, which in their plumbing add is mentioned as one of their goals, then a nightmare part of the dream happens where Mario and luigi are seperated, after , he gets to train and hang out with a princess and a talking mushroom to save his brother and the 'Mushroom Kingdom'. Then he gets to flirt with the princess, defeate a giant bad guy, save Brooklyn, and have his dad be proud of him. Also, for #2: The super star was a fake. First of all, bowser gets it from a 'power block', which Peach has plenty of, so what was the likely hood that only that speccific block was the super star? Next, how did bowser transport and capture the star? After breaking the block he is seen closing his hands around the star, but somehow he didn't activate the power up when he touched it. Also, why were those weakling penguins protecting that? Like, really?? And one more thing, for #3, no one knew what the power star would do. Everyone thought that it would be a super powerfull thing that would destroy everything, but really it just makes people invincible and super strong for a few seconds, then it goes away. I'M BEGGING YOU, PLEASE MAKE A VIDEO.
Whenever I hear the phrase “truth is stranger than fiction” I always think of what I hear people say about the unicorn Vs the giraffe. “How is the unicorn the fake one? What sounds weirder, a horse with a horn, or a horse with a 10 foot neck, patches on its body, purple tongue, and 4 horns?”
4:55 you also just solved how the Guardians attack in Legend of Zelda, there is a laser that targets the enemy, the laser then fires, which can be made of electricity, which is why it is blue. But you could do a theory about what a guardian uses to attack Link and how it gets the purple lights to appear all over it. Not only that, but also how the guardian loses it's legs, then it loses it's ability to attack.
9:29 Patthew Mattrick you DID NOT just say dinosaur and put a ichthyosaur on screen, that is a marine reptile but it is NOT a dinosaur or even an archosaur
literally just finished making some hiccup and toothless earrings when this popped up in my notifications! my httyd phase has been going strong for about 11 years now, it's awesome to see the franchise still getting so much love
One of the few real breaks from reality that we see in mythical dragons, aside from simple flight mechanics, is the RANGE of their attacks. TierZoo does a GREAT breakdown on how OP ranged attacks are in nature and how incredibly rare they are, making humanity's unique throwing proficiency (range, power, and accuracy leagues above anything else) one of the most broken abilities in the ga... in Outside.
Iroh in ATLA talks about producing lightning in EXACTLY the way you described. "It requires a calm mind and isn't fuelled by emotion" "You separate the positive and negative energies, creating an imbalance, which it seeks to resolve; when the energy crashes back together, it produces lightning" "Remember, once you release it, you are no longer its master, merely its humble guide"
Finally, some more positive theories on films. Seriously we need more like these for the wonder of the extraordinary! Now what other fantasy creatures can one look into? Mermaids? Fairys? Animal people from Dr Moreau? Well as the saying goes only time will tell.

What I love about how to train your dragon is how much detail goes into it
The story has a lot of detail,
Designs have a lot of detail,
And most importantly the dragons have a lot of detail.
You can tell that they researched some animals to put into these dragons, by appearance, powers, and behavior.
Overall, I love movies that actually care about plot, detail, and characters.
the absolute joy and excitement that i experienced when i read the title just shows how much i love HTTYD and the theory channels
The ice breath explanation makes a lot of sense, considering that the Bewilderbeast is a Tidal class dragon. The creators really throught this through!
Matpat and all his channels feel like smarter and a waaaaay better mythbusters, where the 'myths' are so much more cool and do not involve using dynamite every two episodes😂
i don’t think i’ve ever heard a scarier sentence than “live action remake of how to train your dragon”
Its going to be hard to get an actor for Hiccup, especially with how iconic Jay Baruchel's voice is for Hiccup across all HTTYD media
I can still see the OG VA like Gerard Butler (Stoic) being a good fit for live action Stoic but its hard for the other characters with how iconic they've been portrayed in the animations
It’s a no from me.
We don’t want it- I think the Nine Realms is proof enough that the OG stuff was the perfect franchise and put a bow on the ending nicely. I feel like anything new will dampen and cheapen an already amazing thing 😭
Same here. When I heard that, I literally screamed “No! Why?!?!”
They could always go with a more book-acurate idea
This whole franchise made up a good 50% of my childhood, and it's also quickly becoming my brothers' favorite too!
I agree the book’s especially are great
In the bonuses of the secpnd movie's dvd, we actually get a closer look at the dragon's abilities, including their breaths. For example, we learn that fire-breathing dragons like Astrid's use magnesium, others molten rocks, and others simply turn massive amounts of water into ice directly as it exits their mouth. Pretty neat i'd say
The best part of the channel is the editing hasn’t changed in 7 years
Fantastic
Can we just take a second to appreciate how awesome the how to train your dragon movies are.
Yes. Yes we can. And while we're at it, how about some praise for John Powell? He created my favorite theme of any animated movie.
its awesome
There good but the books are better. Please tell me you know the books exist.
Word.
@@ka-1atmyth353 I personally prefer the movies but the books are just as good in my opinion
Adults would make an easy snack of them and the adults are usually to heavy to get up into the branches the babys sit on
I wonder if MatPat could explain how the Flightmare actually paralyse it’s enemies
oh there's a bunch of dragons that would be interesting to try and explain. i wanna know how the smothering smokebreath and death song work too
The FlightMare is said to simply paralyze its foe with FEAR.
The DeathSong amber is some liquid that solidifies instantly when exposed to oxygen.
@Bruh🧨 i'm pretty sure the flightmare was explained to not actually do it with fear if i remember correctly. a real life explanation would probably be some sort of nerve agent? (eg topically-acting cholinergic blockers)
@@darrenv2594 yeah my first thought was some type of neurotoxin
@Undermanned yep, definitely. would probably need a pretty low half life tho, given it wears off relatively quick
As as father of 4, I can honestly say I always enjoy these movies and the series with my kids...because of the science. The writers of this IP are fantastic at doing their homework.
Its actually crazy how much effort was put into httyd to somewhat accurately depict dragons
This man goes though weeks of hard work for theories about How to train your Dragon.
at last...a scientific episode. not as much calculating and formula as in the good old days, but still far better than those "let's basically just talk about this" episodes. pls keep it up!
No, it is a let's talk about this episode. Thunderdrums don't create the sound by closing their mouths. They create them by opening their mouths and screaming with their giant lungs
you've already made my day, I never would have expected a theory video over my absolute favorite childhood movie movie
I’ve had the idea that dragons could literally exist it’s definitely possible and I’m so glad this episode exists
Also the Death song (my fav dragon) shoots out an amber at it’s enemies that cool down and trap them so that they can eat their enemies later
Would be neat for Matt to make more science videos on the Film Theory channel like this, they're really interesting and I've been missing 'em
There's no franchise that I miss and LOVE more than HTTYD. No other series makes me feel as happy or complete when watching it
10:03 its not an air bubble, its actually bubbles of void, which is even cooler
Shrimp is secretly a destiny guardian or something
I love httyd so much, and seeing a recent theory from you a day after I got hit with httyd nostalgia is amazing and exciting
Yo let’s goooo! I always love how MatPat uses science to help explain even the craziest of theories.❤
Idk if it’s just me, but I think fantasy series like HTTYD are even more enjoyable if they have a scientific explanation, but still keep an air of mystery.
(EW BOTS! Sorry I hate those guys)
7:13 it would be cooler if I didn't see it coming, you've used that gag about 1,115 times in your past videos.
10:37 the sound intensity actually doubles every 10 decibels, so it is around 900x louder, not 10 billion times.
Still, that’s pretty loud.
i think he was being sarcastic
Video request: “The SMG4 x Marvel theory”
Description: “Are Niles and SMG0 both part Eternal part Celestial? Is Tari, secretly a stark? Did Desti get resurrected and brainwashed into a mindless assassin? Is the SMG4 universe apart of the Marvel multiverse? What will happen if the two crossed over? Is there a 7th hidden infinity stone in the SMG4 universe? Did T-mobile collaborate with Stark industries? Are the SMGs a variation of the Eternals? What is the true power of the Avatar? How did the memes really became stupid in the first universe (SMG0 universe)? And what another SMG4 x Marvel questions are waiting to be answered?”
dude this show is my entire childhood and im so happy to see you cover it!!!
but another thing for Matpat to theorize on is how Toothless's species is descripted of having such a lighting and deathly fire breath
It’s Plasma, not fire.
@@BruhTNT4258 k
@@BruhTNT4258 Actually make sense...
i absolutely adore the httyd worldbuilding.
maybe next httyd episode you can talk about their abilities! like how the light fury can camoflauge with their plasma blasts and how the skrill can cover itself in lightning.
also maybe some details about the slitherwing dragon! its scales are coated in a poison and id love to see a deep dive into what is actually in this poison.
It is a cool decision that the Zippleback’s two heads serve a fire breathing purpose, one breathes flammable gas (probably methane) while the other uses it’s teeth to create a spark and ignite the gas
"We're vikings, it's an occupational hazard", Stoik the Vast
"We're Theorist's, it's an occupational hazard", MatPat the All Knowing
Now that it is on trend, I'd like to highlight Matpat's use of Astrid's Honey and the Hatchet method of theorizing.
wait what was up with how he said game theory? at 2:16? a glitch artistic choice or are we getting channel LORE.
bro.
You are way behind-_-
@@TundraTheSnepsince when is there lore
My favorite franchise ever, this made me so happy ❤️
10:18 except the stunning effect is caused by more than just the sound waves, and the deadliness is caused by the rapid movement in water which causes a superheated pocket of space that instantly collapses in on itself, which requires the shrimp be in water to produce such effects as air is not dense enough.
interesting...
You have no idea how happy it makes me to see a HTTYD theory
Loved this! He should go into detail on all the fire dragons breath too though, because in the show most of them are made up of different fire like Stormsly’s fire is magnesium based
At 3:27 it jitters, but on the whole another perfect video from matpat
I've loved Dragons since I was a small child, especially How to Train Your Dragon. This episode was practically a dream come true.
There are some things from the Race to The Edge series which I would love to see theories about such as:
death song' amber attack or how deadly Naders actually use Magnesium, Slither wings constant venom production or the frightmare's fear attack, how gronkles can survive eating only rocks or how the eruptedons can survive on only eating lava, how the submeripper can create whirlpools ond how gronkle steel is made or Razorwhip's metal skin, how the smothering smoke breath can attack and disguise itself with smoke, how the Sandbuster can make glass or sentinel can become statues, how the buffolord can rapidly expand how the shadow wing are so dimorphic and how dramillon can use any breath attack they see
I would love to see these be answered as well
the sandbuster is actually a really cool one, i theorise that it eats sand melts it in its body and blasts it back out as molten glass that cools super quickly
I like how you used bearded dragon lizards when showing them as examples, shows how much little details are added to these videos.
4:05 a few seconds before the blue eyed dragon came up I was like "blue eyed dragon lol" and it actually came. That was kinda funny ngl
1:20
You got your standard fire, as well as ice, literal lightning, acid, boiling water
And then, “AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” **insert Big Enough cowboy-screaming meme**
🤣
5:14 they really should’ve just called it a light saber
11:10 That Snap! 😂😂😂
I'd love to see him tackle some of the Dragons from the shows and the breath attacks that come with them. Namely the Skrill and its lightning attacks.
Same! I thought of that immediately! Like I thought he was gonna mention the Skrill but then he brought up Toothless 😭
this turned out way more interesting than I thought it was going to be
9:29 Patthew Mattrick you DID NOT just say dinosaur and put a ichthyosaur on screen, that is a marine reptile but it is NOT a dinosaur or even an archosaur
literally just finished making some hiccup and toothless earrings when this popped up in my notifications! my httyd phase has been going strong for about 11 years now, it's awesome to see the franchise still getting so much love
One of the few real breaks from reality that we see in mythical dragons, aside from simple flight mechanics, is the RANGE of their attacks. TierZoo does a GREAT breakdown on how OP ranged attacks are in nature and how incredibly rare they are, making humanity's unique throwing proficiency (range, power, and accuracy leagues above anything else) one of the most broken abilities in the ga... in Outside.
the second humans perfected group coordination and mastered the ability to pick up and throw things is when we became OP
Matpat can find a scientific explanation to almost anything lol, good one as usual i kinda wanna watch this movie now
Thank you so much for doing a theory on how to train your dragons! I’ve waited a while for something like this
5:01 Lasers used to control lightning? Alright, where's our warp drives and antimatter bombs?
I have to be honest , I'm having a rough day so far. Thank you Matthew for coming right on time to lift my spirits 🤙🏾
It’s not only the Bilwilder beast that breathes ice the Razorwhip (my other fav dragon) also breathes an icey breath that is sooo cold it burns
saw this video on my recommended page and was pleasantly shocked by the “posted 1 day ago.” i’m glad people are still talking about this franchise.
5:40 Merica' f- yeah!
I appreciate you making this. I've thought about whether or not fictional dragon powers would be possible (got to the dragon arc of Fairy Tail lol)
6:31 Technically the Skrill doesn't generate its own electricity, it gathers electricity from storms.
Didn't expect a httyd theory I grew up with this show and it's still my favorite franchise ever
Finally, some more positive theories on films. Seriously we need more like these for the wonder of the extraordinary! Now what other fantasy creatures can one look into? Mermaids? Fairys? Animal people from Dr Moreau? Well as the saying goes only time will tell.
Always enjoy the content for years now another banger
