For those of you who call this car "boring," VW tried to "upmarket" the Jetta with the Mk5 models. It didn't work so well, and went against the history of the Jetta. So they went down to a more market friendly, i.e. boring, people's car type product. I've had Mk2, Mk3, and I failed to get a Mk4, as it's my favourite model. Especially in GLI trim. Funny note, they've had that same damn door open/key in chime for 30 years! LOL
The Jetta has become so cheap and boring, but it's hard to deny the value here. It's really amazing to see how inexpensive the Jetta has become. I remember my family buying a 2006 Jetta Value Edition in 2005. One of the first on the lot. The car had an MSRP of around $18,000. In today's prices, that would be nearly $23,000.
What made your parents want to buy brand new / near new high mileague ? Here in the UK my parents spent £5500 on a 2009 BMW 3 series the average budget between £2000 to £3000 at least for the working class my dad's car technically has the stereotypes of BMWs being expensive to fix but I think like any car a good used warranty should cover the costs :)
I have a 2009 Jetta with over 150 000 km and have never had one issue with the car besides electrical issues with the locks. Just purchased this car in automatic and I don’t see the same problems with the audio.
I got this car and it just crossed 500 miles. I dont even like to push this beyond 3000-3500 rpm in first, vibration makes me go crazy. I wonder how he is pushing it near 7000
casiotechI its good. I havent heard of any transmission issues with the manual. The automatic has torque converter issues ive read, but no major issues with the manual
I've owned a 6MT 2019 S for 8 months now, and I still love it. Yes, the sound system is absolute garbage, and the gearbox is rubbery, but I've found that removing the clutch delay valve makes a HUGE difference in terms of shifting crispness. My favorite car ever was my 1991 CRX Si, so I appreciate the analogue feel of the S. If I could delete power steering, I would. 🙂

It’s a decent car. Tune it eliminating the rev hang, put an intake on it, and get some nice 18 inch niche misano wheels and you’ve got a cool little car for $20,000
Jared hey no problem. The timing belt it made of rubber / plastic much cheaper to produce. Some engines are designed in a way that the timing belt if it breaks could damage the engine internally. A well designed engine uses a timing chain [much stronger for the long run] that is connected outside the engine so if it breaks there’s no internal damage. Hope this makes sense bro
@@chocolatewheelchair ahhh wow I never knew that. A car that has really been catching my eye for a while is the 2016 Accord sport trim. I imagine that one uses a chain.
Jared timing chains are generally more reliable and last longer. You generally don’t need to change out the chain until much later if the design was faulty to begin with. However, majority of 4bangers use timing belts. Cheaper.
I just picked up exact same trim as yours for $13.8K. It was an easy decision, getting 50 mpg on my DC to NY trip (twice!). Agree on sound system, so looking to upgrade but still a great all around buy, especially with Apple Car Play.
I normally do not purchase a completely new vehicle in it's first year. However, when I found out the 2020's were going to be a "carry over" of the 2019, with a 4 year/50,00 warranty, the 2019 seems like the better move.
Vws have always been drivers cars. However, i would immediately get that rev hang tuned out. that would annoy the LIVING hell out of me and completely defeats a manual.
I have a 2020 jetta s manual. It's not preferable but it's hasn't dampened my shifting experience too much. Just as fun as the older cars I used to drive. I got one to replace my fiat 500 turbo (dad now) still fun on back roads while giving me dad mode when I need it lol. It's a gem and a real pleasure to drive.
When you were driving in that parking lot, I noticed the instrument cluster lights flash (dimmed) a bit, then recover. Was this an issue, or just camera reflections?
but every trim above this forces you into an auto trans. Is the $3.5k price jump worth it? Comparing to an SE/R-Line/SEL is the only way to really know. Cheap, inexpensive cars don't have to be "cheap" or featureless; they just won't have a many features as higher priced/trimmed cars. You can build an excellent inexpensive car just as easy as you can build a shody/lackluster expensive car. At least in the S trim, you don't have to worry about a leaking sun/pano roof.
@@chocolatewheelchair... In the recent past, vw panoroofs had a high leak probability which was due to a bad roof weld/seam. The problem may have been id'd, but many recent panoroofs have proven to be leaky, too many for me to take a chance one. 'S' models for me, but not the jetta.
Have you felt any type of spring feel on the clutch pedal as you press or release the pedal? I'm having that looked into but don't know if it's a normal feel for this car. Also, does the car sound loud when you first turn it on? I know the secondary air comes on when a cold start up happens but it developed this louder noise at start up that sounds like it has a tiny hole in the exhaust but goes away after 20 seconds or so when the air pump shuts down.
Definitely normal start up noise. I have a 2020 Jetta S MT and it is loud for about 20 seconds after a cold start. I believe there are electronically controlled baffles in the exhaust. As far as the clutch goes, I have no complaints at all. How is it going for you now?
Spotting some dealers trimmed like thos one advertising around 13k for one. Considering it as a stop gap between now and when I can get the truck I want. My MK7 GTI was great before the accident and it's cool to see the nice tech features on a cheap base level car.
The easiest and most gratifying mod that you can do to any vehicle is the stereo. I doubt you have ever heard a real system if you’re even slightly amused by any stock stereo. There is no stock stereo that sounds like a 1990s custom system with American made amplifiers with High end components. A little knowledge and 1000 bucks will destroy the stereo system of every manufacturer at any price range. Food for thought
Man the economy has flipped since the three years you posted this. I found one for 20,000 on a dealership next to me with 25,000 miles. Do you think that might be worth it? Im considering it because with the market it looks like i cant find a better deal on a manual, do you think a base manual jetta almost new with warranty is worth 20,000?
Depends on your use case and if you have a family or not. These cars will average upwards of 30 mpg pretty easily and are pretty reliable other than oil burning that all modern turbo cars suffer from. If you have a family and need a lot of space I would not recommend this car, they are kind of small
Really glad to hear you specifically mention that it rides comfortably, even on Michigan roads haha. Looking to get myself one of these in a couple months
@@lmbmts yeah I actually got a used one with only 5K miles right around Christmas Day. Really enjoying it so far. It’s perfect for me. I feel like people are surprised to see a new looking car that isn’t super sporty with a manual transmission and I think that’s cool too.
I like it & the price for a daily. Here's what I would do to it. 18" alzor wheels from ECS tuning. A nice all-season tire 235/40/r18. A unitronic stage 1+ tune and a 30% tint all around and it would be a perfect daily.
All of these things would hurt mpgs, void the warranty, and make the ride harsh. Too much tiny, pedestrians cannot see your face to know you are making eye contact while crossing the street
You dont operate the engine like that. Roll into it at 2000 and shift before 4000. There's nothing up top. The 185 lb-ft of torque and pull and 18psi boost are in the middle. You want more juice you need the old. 2.0.
@@sandyshoremann7524 exactly, I test drive one and I had no rev hang because I shifted way before hitting 4000 rpm. I still had lots of power without raving high.
1)Low cruising rpm ( for my opinion 1.500 is a little low) , drop just one gear. 2) nice rev match!!! A) My Fiat 500 two cylinder engine with 875cc and 85 hp has the worst rev hang in first gear, it redlines way too fast! B) When you change gears the rpm drps way too slow, i don't know why but in both of our cars ( Alfa romeo 159 and a Hyundai Getz ) it started like that and then during gear changing the rps were droping way faster. I think it has something to do with the clutch. If anyone knows please reply ! Really nice video man !
I would not want to be without a spare tire and would order one. How readily can the sound system be upgraded? Are these still built like tanks like the older VWs with solid feel and good corrosion protection?
I was gona say, how much stuff do you want in a base car. You said its 16,500. Theres a reason. I like the Jetta but there are so many options out there. But it is European and no car handles like European cars
So if an enthusiast wants to buy a base Jetta, is the manual worth getting or would you recommend getting the manual? I’ve been renting a base S 2019 Jetta for the last week and am getting 42 MPG on the highway
Hix Nada- i have the manual. The automatics seem to have an issue with the torque convertor. I like my car and its over 3300 miles, no issues now or hopefully in the near future
16:00 there goes a Volvo 850 that you mentioned 😂 nice car man. Congrats on your car. It’s a decent car. Thank you for your excellent POV drive review!! I enjoyed your video. Very informative and nice attention to detail. I’m in the market for this same car in black. 👍🏼
The audio system would be better if it had more than 4 speakers. The old Jettas use to have 6, but now they’ve left out the tweeters which makes the audio system sound muddy.
heyitsme agreed. My accord has 6 and it by no means is a great Audio system but the high frequencies are better than if it didn’t have tweders. A subwoofer would be nice though, but I don’t have an exl
@@colelockridge5816 Yeah I have a Golf GTI and it has 9 speakers including a subwoofer, and it sounds amazing! My old Jetta Sport use to have 6 speakers and even that one didn't sound too bad, but the speakers in the new Jetta s, se, and r-line sound horrible because they lack the clarity that the tweeters give you.
@@heyitsme939 yeah. Have you heard the new 10 speaker 450 watt with subwoofer in the new 2018 accord touring? It's awesome, I'm really wanting one of those. Cole Lockridge I haven’t but I’m sure it sounds amazing, the audio system was definitely one of the big selling points for me when I was getting my car!
My car has this engine 1.4 tsi 150 hp it's a very good engine from 2016 it has cylinder deactivation to save fuel it can run on 2 cylinders when you're just cruising it seems good in the mid range of the rev range and it revs freely equally you can drive smoothly I like vw the engine is reliable and very smooth and is economical when driving smoothly
The base model is ok. But I would probably invest in the sound system. But I have a mk4 jetta and its really fun for a 5 speed. The transmission, engine and break pads are very reliable.
I think you definitely just get used to the cruise control settings. Every manufacturer seems to have "their" way of doing it and I honestly love my 2015 Golf's CC. At first it kinda confused me, figuring out the buttons but now it totally feels intuitive and I generally just use it to do everything with regard to speeding up and slowing down. Thanks for the great video!
I don't understand the reviews saying the sound system is bad. Must be listening to digital music that's lost half it's sound already being compressed. Turn on a good FM station and try again. The rev hang is bad.
@@chocolatewheelchair I could record it. It's bizarre. Vw dealer said they never heard a complaint but the mechanic basically said off the cuff he's been hearing it. It's not isolated with me either I've seen it on online boards. Only in Eco and regular. Dealer said it's prob the turbo, online they say it's possibly transmission and you don't hear in Sport mode because of the timing of the shifting or something (I'm not a mechanic lol)
Eric Janowski hey bro. First, a Volkswagen dealer will lie to you. They’re a dishonest company from a legal perspective. Second, is the noise loud? Like on a scale of 1-10 [10 being like a jack hammer,.. 1 being a candy bar being opened] Try to take a vid I’m curious maybe others are too. It’s insane the driving modes would effects things in that way. It’s so annoying to have these issues with a new car. I really can’t stress how torn I am about getting this car or not. Ya know
@@chocolatewheelchair honestly overall I like the car. The noise is like a 3/10 loudness wise... But it's like.. a sound a new car shouldn't make lol. However I had a 16' Mazda 3 and I gotta say I kinda miss that it's a different feel. This is a little softer and the VW was cheaper for what you got. Oh and the audio system in the VW... IDK what they were thinking!
Eric Janowski interesting. I had a Mazda 3 and yeah, that was a great car to drive. It got broken into and the street of New York destroyed that car and in a sense I miss it too. I’ve heard this stereo is super bad. It’s funny, I called Crutchfield, not sure if you’ve heard of them, it’s a big mail order car audio store and they didn’t even have the speaker side needed for the 2019 Jetta. I told the guy thanks for nothing. But once you get the measurement, a good set of speakers isn’t that expensive. 3/10 isn’t too loud BUT if you’re like me you drive with the radio off a lot and any strange car noises seem to bother me.
I have a 17 Jetta S same type both are base and both have the same engine, but mine has 150 ponies vs 147 in the new Jetta. But any if you guys think the new one is better? Or both suck?
✔️i love this car, i have a 2014 jetta SE 1.8T and i am surprised mine has more Horse Power 170 hp to be specific, vs 147 hp for the 2019... in the other side.. i think you are going to high on RPM when shifting gears, your oil will be gone very quick, i like to shift around 3k to 5k, and NEVER had trans problems...smooth ride, professional smooth sound with a muffler delete and a vibrant resonator instead of muffler
My 2017 Jetta SE has the manual adjustment for the dash lights, maybe its an SE thing? I have an auto, but i do have some sort of vibration when I accelerate in 2nd and 3rd gear i think it might be the catalytic converter, or something near there. Other than that, I love my Jetta! I just bought it last week and im so in love. My sound system is AMAZING as well, it has a factory subwoofer in the rear part over the trunk. my backup camera is awesome, also factory, and it makes an alarm when a car is approaching. It has the blind spot sensors, and the turn signal indicators on the mirrors. I've seen a lot of reviews saying Jettas feel outdated and I'm sitting here like...this is the most amazing car I've ever owned, what are you talking about?! Oh yeah and the armrest is adjustable forward/backward. I use this car for my work commute and Lyft driving. I sometimes get 50 MPG+ going 75 on the highway. for a tank that takes $40 to fill up in Cali and getting 410+ miles out of it, its just amazing.
I bought the 2015 Jetta 2.0S 5spd to learn stick on, I do also have the engine rattle above 6k revs. Doesn't inspire confidence like my automatic Accord because it feels like I'm gonna shake something loose when pretending to hoon it lol Atleast it doesn't have rev hang.

Here in the UK my parents spent £5500 on a 2009 BMW 3 series the average budget between £2000 to £3000 at least for the working class my dad's car technically has the stereotypes of BMWs being expensive to fix but I think like any car a good used warranty should cover the costs :)
oof
Xenon Games $3-4k would be what you expect to pay for, insurance wise for a year or two if you get a nice sportscar with a V8 for your teenager 😂
the eu model starts at 30 000 euros but is a bit more loaded
Why is it boring???
Keeping the revs between 2000-4000 seems to do the trick for me. Good power, fuel economy, and the engine doesn't sound distressed.
18,000 new... I'm looking at a cpo 2019 jetta and they all start ~19k. Ridiculous car prices
I have a 2009 Jetta with over 150 000 km and have never had one issue with the car besides electrical issues with the locks. Just purchased this car in automatic and I don’t see the same problems with the audio.
A vibration on a sub $20K car at over 7000 RPM?... Gee really?
I know right...
I got this car and it just crossed 500 miles. I dont even like to push this beyond 3000-3500 rpm in first, vibration makes me go crazy. I wonder how he is pushing it near 7000
This guy is the reason they have rev limiters.
Michael Hype i don’t get your comment. Explain please
casiotechI its good.
How much did you pay for yours? I found one locally with 85k for $15,000 seems high considering it cost $19,000 new.
@@nicholasrubio1660 yeah that’s a little on the high side. I paid 17k for my ‘19 two years ago at Carmax. 11k on the odometer.
These videos are relaxing and informative!
I keep rewatching your Jetta videos. I'm going to pick up an sel-p that I ordered back in August. Excited.

It’s a decent car. Tune it eliminating the rev hang, put an intake on it, and get some nice 18 inch niche misano wheels and you’ve got a cool little car for $20,000
I have a 2012 Jetta, just hit the 101K mile mark. No major problems and only major maintenance I've had was my timing belt change which was required.
Jared too bad VW doesn’t use timing chains.
@@chocolatewheelchair what's the plus to a chain over a belt? I'm actually asking because I don't know lol
I 💘 this 🚗 and regardless of the 📻 it sounds just fine to me.
K03sport they don’t leak unless they’re broken but I guess in terms of long term reliability you’re totally correct bro
To adjust the instrument panel on any screen you swipe down from the top and you can adjust the brightness turn off Bluetooth and other things
Still love my old Jetta 5 2006.
are the expensive to keep up with? maintenance?
Man the economy has flipped since the three years you posted this. I found one for 20,000 on a dealership next to me with 25,000 miles. Do you think that might be worth it? Im considering it because with the market it looks like i cant find a better deal on a manual, do you think a base manual jetta almost new with warranty is worth 20,000?
Depends on your use case and if you have a family or not. These cars will average upwards of 30 mpg pretty easily and are pretty reliable other than oil burning that all modern turbo cars suffer from. If you have a family and need a lot of space I would not recommend this car, they are kind of small
For reference I paid 22.4k for a brand new 2022 Jetta Sport 6MT
Why is it every time you shift the RPMs jump up? Let off the gas before you push in the clutch
I like pretty much everything about it design wise, only thing I absolutely hate is the stock alloy wheels. Alloy wheels should not look like hubcaps.
Really glad to hear you specifically mention that it rides comfortably, even on Michigan roads haha. Looking to get myself one of these in a couple months
Have you got it yet? I have one and I love it! It’s the A/t
@@lmbmts yeah I actually got a used one with only 5K miles right around Christmas Day. Really enjoying it so far. It’s perfect for me. I feel like people are surprised to see a new looking car that isn’t super sporty with a manual transmission and I think that’s cool too.
@@nicktoth9443 congrats man! Love it too :)
can you not rev high all the time?
typical miata driver, sorry ;D
There are a lot of other channels that don’t rev high. Most of the viewers here like me want to see how the car behaves on sporty drive.
Great video as always, but I would not be able to live the rev hang, that's absolutely horrible!
true
I like it & the price for a daily. Here's what I would do to it. 18" alzor wheels from ECS tuning. A nice all-season tire 235/40/r18. A unitronic stage 1+ tune and a 30% tint all around and it would be a perfect daily.
😍😍👍👍
You're completely missing the point of this car by doing that
But if you drive around all day you don’t want 18s
Ignacio Romero i know right 🤦🏽♂️
All of these things would hurt mpgs, void the warranty, and make the ride harsh. Too much tiny, pedestrians cannot see your face to know you are making eye contact while crossing the street
this revhang would drive me crazy,
You dont operate the engine like that.
Later MY 2019 Jetta's and forward have the spare tire.
Have you experienced a grinding /rattling sound coming from the engine ? and if so did you get it resolved.
The grinding noise is from the transmission and I don't think he has that issue since it only appears in 2019 jettas with automatic transmission
Definitely a manual. More reliable. More engaging. Cheaper to buy and maintain. VW and automatic = Not Good
I just one in manual as well. Im only 16 but Im glad it it stick
Can I make it cheaper by removing backup cameras and any useless sensor I don't need??

Can we talk about the grinding noise the auto makes between like 4 and 5 gear? The heck is it. Disappears in sport mode. Known but not addressed
Eric Janowski got a video of it?
Like on a scale of 1-10
[10 being like a jack hammer,.. 1 being a candy bar being opened]

That rev hang is ridiculous, it makes it sound like there's something wrong with the car. What makes it hang?
Shitty driver is the problem. There's 0 need to go past 4k rpm when it's designed to make torque low
