The day before you published this, my husband and I were having a conversation about this very thing. He believes that men are gods, and I tried to explain to him that what I glean from Psalm 82 is that the passage was about judges who are misusing/abusing their power. This was so timely! Thank you for sharing!

Psalm 82 isn't about human judges nor is the word elohim ever used of humans. Tht belief is based on 2 passages in exodus, 22:8 and 21:6, where elohim should be read as God instead of judges because the plural form of elohim is most commonly used to refer to the singular God of Israel YHWH and it is never used of humans. The judges who were appointed in Exodus 18 were not even called elohim in their appointment which is where you would expect it if anywhere n they were appointed to deal with the minor petty issues to keep the ppl from driving Moses crazy. The bigger issues were still brought before YHWH through Moses and in exodus 21:6 the ppl had already made their choice so there was no need for a judge. Elohim is just a generic term that the Biblical authors use to refer to a spiritual being. Psalm 82 is about YHWH excoriating and condemning to an end times judgment the gods of the gentile nations, members of His divine council who rebelled and failed to rule justly... Read Deuteronomy 32:8-9 and Psalm 89:5-7. YHWH divorced Himself from the nations after Babel as a judgment against humanity for the Babel incident and He alotted to the nations lesser gods also known as sons of god to rule over them, YHWH then took Abraham n created His own nation Israel. You never have anywhere in the OT jewish elders or any humans for tht matter in a council in the skies ruling over the Gentile nations. There is only one candidate and it's the sons of God referenced in Deuteronomy 32:8-9. Everywhere in the OT where you have sons of god it is always referring to divine beings. When Jesus quotes Psalm 82 he's not referring to humans He is reminding them that their own Scriptures tell them that there are sons of god who are more than mortal which is why He asks them how do they say that He is blaspheming for claiming to be the son of god n even more so He is claiming to be the Lord of the Council which means Jesus is quite literally claiming to be the destroyer of the gods n thts awesome!!! also just a bit of common sense will tell u tht Psalm 82 isn't about humans because in the Psalm YHWH tells the gods that they will die like men. Why would u tell a human that they are going to due like a human lol like gee YHWH thnx 4 the update captain obvious 😂 no He tells them they will die like men because they are divine beings and YHWH is going to destroy them. Also the psalmist gives it away at the end of the psalm when he says rise up O God and judge the earth for you shall inherit the nations. Well, who is over the Gentile nations? Its not jewish elders lol its the sons of god from Deuteronomy 32:8-9.. the Apostle Paul makes very clear reference to this when he says we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against principalities, powers, rulers, authorities, spiritual wickedness in the heavenly realm. Those are all terms of geographical rulership... gee golly gosh I wonder who Paul is talking about... hmm... lol it's the sons of god from Deuteronomy 32, the old gods of the nations... Paul knew exactly who he was going up against being the Apostle to the Gentiles...

Think of the story of Job. Psalm 82:1 refers specifically to the same council that sits with God in the story of Job as the acuser tries to convince God that Job will be unfaithful.
From an ancient Hebrew point of view, the "angels" were lesser spirit beings that have been referred to as gods since then.

I see it all the time where even evangelical Christians take a couple of verses that seem to say one thing, yet the biblical teachings as a whole say just the opposite.

Christianity teaches SEPARATION from God (based on the writings of the ancient Latin/Catholic Church) ... Sadly, Christians don't recognize the Divinity within mankind ... because to the Church, God is OUTWARD instead of INWARD. Call me crazy, but I have to give some credit to the "New Agers" - they actually have it RIGHT in that one only has to look WITHIN to recognize Divinity. You are all created from the same Divine SPIRIT, of that which is called "God." - That means we are ALL one ... not separate as the modern Church teaches. Remember this the next time you criticize someone ... because you are only criticizing YOURSELF. The Christians were blinded a long time ago by the re-written Catholic scriptures ... that's why I recommend the original KOINE GREEK scriptures.

Jesus was quoting from Psalm 82 which is about the "elohim" of the Divine Council - about actual created heavenly beings who rebelled. It's not about human judges in the Old Testament, as that would make no sense. First of all, nowhere is "elohim" applied to humans and Jesus is defending His two claims to be God right before and after John 10:34. It would not be a defense of His divinity if Jesus were saying humans in the scriptures were called "gods" therefore He can call Himself God. In Psalm 82, God is taking His place among the elohim of His Divine Council and declaring that they will meet the same fate as humanity, so they are not in the same category as humans or that declaration would make no sense either. Jesus appeals to this verse to show there are other categories that His enemies were aware of beyond the human.

I believe that, as you read the Bible, you need to retain a consistent point of view to your understanding of what it says. I like to take it as literally as possible, until the Holy Spirit highlights, or even shows me something in the Scripture that I am reading. As the Bible says, He is always the same spirit, Therefore He is not going to give any two of us wildly different meanings. Also, the Bible says that, "no scripture is of any private interpretation."

Hey Melissa, great video! Here is something interesting about the religious leaders during Jesus’s time when He was on Earth 2000 years ago. In John chapter 8 Jesus was verbally jousting with the religious leaders about who they are. These religious leaders are not Roman leaders or Jewish leaders. But these religious leaders were appointed by Rome not God. Israel was not a nation at the time Jesus was on earth. They were under the occupation of the Roman empire at this time.
Now in John 8:38 thru 47 Jesus tells us exactly who these religious leaders are and who their father is. Notice the lower-case letter for the word father in John 8:38, 41 and 44.
In the Strong’s concordance check out in the Hebrew dictionary 7014 and 7017. These are the Kenites.
A number of the Pharisees and Sadducees during Jesus’s time where these Kenites. These are the same group of people that had Jesus killed! So, who are these Kenites? Jesus told us exactly in John 8:44 who they are. And who was Jesus referring too when He said “He was a murderer from the beginning?” So, who was the first murderer in the Bible? Give Genesis 4:8 a read and you will have your answer. Again, thanks for great video…………..

how in this verse is Jesus claiming exclusive divinity? He isn't claiming deity, He's claiming authority....by being the Son of God and fully submitted to the will of God.
essentially, because Jesus is perfectly acting in self-denial and submittance, anything Jesus says or does is equal to it being said or done by God. to the point where Jesus even says, if you've seen Me you've seen the Father. He isn't claiming to be the Father or a deity/divine, He is claiming to be the Son of God, the promised Christ from the Davidic covenant
as you said, Jesus was a monotheistic Jew. knowing full well that He isn't divine, but a man, the Son of God..not God Himself. If Jesus was claiming divinity then the pharisees would have been in the right to try to kill him for blasphemy. and Jesus probably would have agreed with that, because a monotheistic Jew could never and would never claim to be divine or God.
Jesus literally never once claims to be God or claims to be the Father. it is however fully spelled out in scripture that isn't robbery for Him to be considered equal with God, because the reasons why i stated above. Jesus was perfectlly self-denied and submitted to the Fathers will, hence "the Father and I are one". this is echo'd all throughout John time and time again.
John is such a misinterpreted book all throughout Christianity because of our greek, dualist driven minds. for some reason we view John almost like a different language, where its words are capable of contradicting everything else said consistently throughout scripture. that isn't the case.

the point around 2:00 is just a misunderstanding -- jesus is not calling anybody anything -- he is just quoting the psalm, which says, in the present tense "i have said you are gods". he does not say that the psalm applies to his opponents -- he is saying that the psalm is part of their scripture, so it cannot be blasphemous. and, if the non-blasphemous psalm uses the term "gods" to address beings other than the one true god, then, jesus is also not blaspheming when he calls himself the son of man. in summary, the jews say that jesus claims equality with god, but he answers that he does not.

Yet we all want to go to heaven or some say they are ready for heaven to come to earth with Jesus as our King. Well don't you think that if it does happen that He will never apply His laws or His Father's laws etc. to His Kingdom?
We are to assimilate into His Kingdom and how do we do that if we have no acess to His laws, ways etc.? Remember those who teach against the law would be the least in the Kingdom.

We all know it seems like we have been lied to in almost everything. It is time we seek God's truth for ourselves and allow Him to teach us in the way we should go. As Paul would say, "put on Jesus". Our instructions are found in the throughout the Bible. Don't stop seeking the Armour of God until your feet are armed in peace.
We call the Armour, love bands, we pray that all will come to love the law as David and ourselves have. May our God go will us all and that all walk in peace and the grace of God.
let's practice our religion, be doers of The Word. Are we ready for His Kingdom to come?

Since Gd is the one and only Truth and it is absolutely illogical for multiple truths to exist, it is therefore impossible for there to be more than one Gd. HOWEVER, there logically can be extensions of Gd. Extensions of Gd ARE Gd. But there are different parts and levels of Gd just like there are different parts and levels to humans. Gd is the head but believers are his body. Gd's offspring are inescapably innately also gds. But they are eternally completely dependent on the Father for all things. We are branches of Js vine therefore we are Js but he is the main vain.

@@HotepOurobo Yep. The scriptures say we ALSO are lights and ch ldr n of The Light. The scriptures repeatedly and profoundly describe us the way Gd is also described. BUT the catch is that we are only extensions or branches growing out of Gd and are eternally utterly dependent upon Gd.

I'm not into new age stuff. Open minded but I got enough on my plate just from the supernatural stuff the Bible teaches. The comparisons I gave are directly found in scripture and the logic backing them is too. For example, Genesis records that EVERY Kind of lifeform reproduces the same Kind of creature. There are zero life forms currently known that defy this, therefore Gd would reproduce little gds. But that's only logically possible if they are extensions of himself rather than absolute independent beings.

Melissa, your comment about not being reformed made me wonder: what are your thoughts on John Piper? I was introduced to TULIP by a camp counselor when I was in high school, and to be honest, it CRUSHED me because it made God seem like a cold, callous being who isn't actually concerned with the eternal destiny of individual people. Taken to it's most extreme, it makes God look like He's more concerned with His own glory even above loving people, to the point where He arbitrarily chooses individuals both to enlighten and to send to hell. For the next few years after that, I really struggled in my relationship with the Lord, feeling He was distant or wondering if I was really one of the "chosen" ones.
At this point, I would say I'm a 3-4 point "Calvinist," just based on my interpretation of what the Bible has to say. After lots of digging into the Word and watching videos on what different apologists have to say (Mike Winger, for example), I feel more secure in what I believe. And I can see God's love all throughout Scripture as He reaches out to those who don't know Him, so that helps me to believe that He is truly a God of compassion and of mercy who cares about individual people.
Still, I think it's a shame that the Calvinism debate causes so much division in the church. It seems like a distraction from what is really much more important: sharing the Gospel and making disciples. That's how I see it, anyways. So all that to say, with your background, do you see anything "cult" like with John Piper...? Or just where he's adding things or perspectives to Scripture that aren't necessarily there? Just curious of your thoughts.

As a former Mormon, yes, in the sense that they believe we are all “little gods”, but they also believe in a lot of other concerning doctrinal (false) ideas. In which I believed in until the Holy Spirit revealed the truth within the Bible. Felt like a holy smack in the face haha.
they carry around the Book of Mormon and the Bible but as someone whose experienced this, they do value the Book of Mormon over the Bible even if they try to bring in scriptures from the Bible. 😶‍🌫️
Very confusing time in my life but Gods grace and mercy directed me out of that before I got tooo far into that religion.

The interpretation you are using is not correct. This can be seen from the parallel that Jesus speaks. I'll simplify his words to make it more obvious.
"If he called men gods, then why are you on me for saying I am the son of God?"
This may seem like a broken parallel because it relates "god" to "son of God." It isn't. Psalms 82 says both "you are gods" and "sons of God". Jesus expects his audience to know that.
The parallel only works if "god" in the first part has something in common with "God" in the second part.
If your interpretation says that "god" in the first part means "mighty men" or "leaders" then Jesus' words become
"If he called men mighty-men / leaders, then why are you on me for saying I am the son of God?"
See how the parallel loses it's meaning under the interpretation you are using?

God. A one-time mortal, next higher than Lord God ruler over all the people on earth, and in the lower heavens, for a season.
Lord God. A one-time mortal, next higher than Lord, ruler over part of the people on earth and the lower heavens, for a season.
Lord. A one-time mortal, ruler over part of the people on earth for a season.
God said: I am, as any other spirit of the dead, a one-time man upon the earth, thy elder brother of tens of thousands of years' experience. Distinguish, then, that the twain God and The Creator are not the same one. No more is thy God than what thou shalt be in time to come, and all angels, the Gods and Lords and generals and captains and chiefs in heaven are but the brothers and sisters of mortals and the spirits of the dead; and none of these, however exalted, can create Life or Motion or an Individual or Person. These are from The Great Spirit, The Creator.
