I too also have these from 1954. I bought on e-bay for $150.00 back in 2017. They are in nice shape but the power unit will not work. The e-unit fell apart. I removed it and rewired it but still nothing. I still have not been able to get it to work.
These engines will run on 027 but when you run them through 027 switches the fuel tanks scape the switch housing. that's why you see a lot of Lionel F3's with fuel tanks all marked up. Larger engines are made to run on 0 gauge track.

They have magnetic traction,
but some of their detailed part's,were removed from
production.
