  • In this video I have a look at a customer's 2020 Ford Escape with the big 1.5 turbo that has an engine light on with a P0446 "Evaporative Emission Control System (EVAP) Vent Control Circuit." It also has a couple of other EVAP codes that popped up at the same time. Let's see what the issue is.

Another shop would have installed a new vent valve, then the purge, then a new cannister valve, then charged you to smoke it, might even have dropped the tank to "inspect" the sending unit. The world is filled with parts cannon changers but few can actually perform a diagnostic on the circuit. Good work Eric O, even without the glasses you found it.

This is a lot like the debate about epoxy covered rebar. When it first came out people logically thought it would prevent water contact with the steel and slow rust. What happened is water found its way in, and the epoxy prevented it from draining or evaporating away. So, rust happened just as often, despite the extra expense of the epoxy. The epoxy also had a way of concealing rust making it harder to identify. Plastic covered body parts are in the same category, they are cosmetic barriers that hold dirt and moisture against vulnerable parts.

I like the Starbrite electrical varnish, the kind made of MEK, the one that smells like colors for reinforcing slightly chafed wires and for sealing off any potential crimper marks in a crimp and seal, or if you are feeling bad for doing the ol hokey pokey and don't want to leave holes in the wiring to turn onto green blobs .. its also great for gluing connectors with busted locking tabs together, not permanent, but it wont just jiggle loose either.

Leak DTC's on late model Ford vehicles are also commonly tied to the capless filler, where the flap doesn't seal. I have to oil mine (spray oil down the neck) every few weeks, clear the code and I'm good again until the fuel washes off the oil and the flap starts leaking air. The capless system is dumb. Now we can't just replace a cap because its not sealing.

Those covers underneath are issues for everyone who does dirt roads. My old 04 GMC Z71 had skid plates underneath it...someone opted for upgrade, thick ones, thank goodness cause I slid those things many times when a dirt road fell out from underneath me..loggers tore up those roads I hunted on to the point, at times, you went down a road for from 1/3 mile to over 4 miles, tires digging in, underneath belly scrubbing along as you ran thru the old ruts. Anyway, after one very muddy hunting season, I took my old Z in for an oil change. Young kid, bless his heart, raises it up on the lift, starts removing the skid plate to get to the oil drain, SPLAT...huge Alabama red clay mud wad the size of your head falls right ON his face. Swearing, yelling, all the expected sounds came from the service bay. Dude hadn't been working changing oil for more than a couple months maybe, and I come along and teach him the hard lesson to, LOOK before you drop covers....LOL. Service writer and 4 other tech in the shop come out where I am, laughing hysterically...I knew all of them personally for years...thanking me for the great lesson I just brought to the new guy. I bet he never did that again. Those skid plates can hold quite a large amount of mud when you drove in mud like I did, and many others, while on a hunting outing on a logging road. Watch the face and look before you just start dropping a cover...lesson learned...LOL. Cheers.

Along with the p0172 & p0175 codes, I also get the p0446 code on my ‘06 dodge ram 1500. Minding the rain, I will be looking for some green. Wouldn’t think down here in Texas it would be as prevalent but from all of your videos, you show sometimes the most simple solution beats throwing parts at it.

I believe the fabric type material is supposed to help reduce road noise, but they really should cover it with plastic to keep the dirt, salt, and water off. But that'd cost them a few bucks and prevent rust that might make the vehicle have to be replaced sooner, so no surprise they don't care.

it baffles me how some of these wires you find are broken lol i would also suggest using a sewing thread destitcher to open wire looms to prevent cutting into wires on accident and if your feeling rich snap on makes there own part number SGTT4B anyways i love your video's and have actually helped me get a couple raises at my shop as a new tech learning the trade

I like to use 12 gauge wire nuts on those types of wires and fill them up with silicone when I'm done. But always make sure you sinch it up tight with a zip tie when you're done.

There should be a symbol molded into those underbody panels that denotes the type of material they are made from.....Look for a triangle with an image of soda straws or plastic tableware from the plant cafeteria. ....somebody got an award for coming up with that material!

Also just a passing thought when you and Mrs. O were debating who's thunder. It made me think of that scean in the last Thor movie where Natalie Portman comes flying in and has control of the hammer
