    Yes, I am addicted to buying makeup. I have gotten better this year. This addiction has coincided with You Tube. I found You Tube in 2018/2019. My makeup used to fit in a small makeup bag. Now, I have drawers full. I am in the process of decluttering and have for years. Unfortunately, I still buy new things. The rate of my purchases is not the same. I am much more selective with my items. Sales are a trigger for me. I have to actively restrain from buying anything. There seems to be more sales these days.

    I had to quit watching new releases a few years back. I still don’t watch them. I just have so much makeup. Some of my categories are fine one mascara, one concealer, one brow product. But on the other side, I have 50 blushes. It’s ridiculous. I haven’t bought new makeup (other than replacements for my single categories) in about three years. I am so proud of myself! I am so happy I don’t know what’s going on in the beauty world. I know some but I am ok with not being in the know 🤗

    Inventorying all my products and decluttering was a huge wake-up call for me. I had so many items that expired and had to throw away but never got good use of since I had so many. I’ve been on a low buy for over 2years and it’s still hard not to over buy.

    Something I do with eyeshadow palettes: if there’s one I want to buy I have to try and recreate it with palettes I already own. I don’t depot or break up palettes, I just compare swatches to internet photos and then write down what ones look the most comparable. This gets me the shades I want, and it kills a TON of time so I’m not online shopping before bed lol

    This is such great advice. I'm super struggling not to buy makeup, but I know I have 48 highlighters and over 100 eyeshadow palettes. But what has really helped me is that I just can't afford to anymore. Having bought a house, had a baby, and cut down my hours at work, I just can't justify buying a Natasha Denona palette, lol. But I do love the colour story of the new palette 😂

    My thing has been nail polish. I stopped buying so much when I realized (1) how long it takes to use up a bottle and (2) how many times a shade was technically different but functionally the same as others I already have. Plus, it was just a lot of money.

    Watching panning videos was a big wakeup call for me. Seeing some take a year to use a blush, especially soseone that wears makeup most days, made me realize I have at least 12 to 15 years of blush.

    I’m in a few Facebook groups related to nail polish and let me tell you, some of those people need to hear this!
    As someone who used to work at Ulta I have obtained more makeup than I can use in 10 years + and I barely even wear any makeup anymore. I only wear it now “to use it because I have it” and it feels like a burden

      I have the same pattern- so I stopped decluttering and "hate pan" my unwantrd stuff instead. Like I'll take an eyeshadow palette I'm getting sick of and find ways to repurpose the shades- like adding a color I dislike to a nail polish I dislike and making a whole new color that I may actually like, or crushing up some colors and mixing them with clear gloss to make a lip gloss or mixing them with a liquid highlighter to create a glowy blush.
      Doing this has really helped break the pattern of declutter and buy.
      Like why buy something new when I can make it instead? Plus I don't feel guilty abt really digging into my products as I was already going to declutter them.

    Project panning, creating an inventory and decluttering helped me. I’ve been project panning for the last 4 or 5 years and it’s only now that I’m seeing a lot of progress and I can control my purchasing without going crazy. I think a lot of that has to do with my preferences changing and also getting older and not wanting to wear as much makeup.

  • @nikkidarkangelpnope8400
    @nikkidarkangelpnope8400 11 месяцев назад +10

    You actually saved me from buying more makeup with your project pans. It made me realize how long it would take to use things up and how insane it is to have backups. I also found that I can overcome the FOMO on eyeshadow palettes by depotting my eyeshadows to big magnetic palettes so I can dupe the vibe of anything new that comes out because other than multichrome shades I have pretty much all the colours and finishes you can imagine. In the coming year I am going to attempt #teamprojectpan along with you for all my cosmetics categories. I have been on a no/low buy since Angelica's Kalaidos collab (except 9 pan star wars from colorpop but that's a star wars collector thing not a makeup thing lol).

  • @KuinKuu
    @KuinKuu 11 месяцев назад +6

    You made some great points. I also found having an inventory to be crucial to moving forward.
    I'd also like to add that it's important to realize where overconsumption stems from. In my case I tend to browse online stores when I'm bored and want to buy things when I'm stressed to get that temporary dopamine rush. What I find helpful is to do other things that actually bring me joy and improve the quality of my life long term like exercising, seeing my friends, getting enough sleep, getting a new hobby etc. When my everyday life is good, I don't have the need to put a band-aid on my feelings by buying stuff.

  • @SarahColledge
    @SarahColledge 11 месяцев назад +3

    I have a skincare stash that will take me about a year to get through. I'm lucky as I recognise my problem and don't allow it to get too bad. I don't open products until I'm ready to use them and I put a use by date on everything once opened. I get frustrated as I have so many products I want to try but I'd hate to waste something. I get joy from using up a product, so I'll focus on one or two products from each category and only open something new when I've used up one. I give myself a pat on the back when I'm doing well, but I'm not too hard on myself when I do badly - I just make sure I learn a lesson from it. As addictions go it's not the worst one to have so we shouldn't be too hard on ourselves.

    I’ve been makeup rehabbing since the end of 2021. Coincidentally the thing that helped me the most was just being in a very busy and stressful season of life last year. I wasn’t touching any of my products because I didn’t have time nor did I care because I was so stressed and burned out from grad school, work, and being a care taker.
    Summer last year I finally decided to do a massive declutter and give away 90% of my makeup cuz it was just going to waste honestly. I challenged myself to keep my makeup collection confined to one standard sized acrylic organizer because what’s the point in having any more than that if I’m too busy or tired to reach for things.
    That challenge has been working really well for me. I’ve only recently started buying makeup again and I will admit that my collection has outgrown my organizer, BUT I’m making sure to project pan older pieces or gift products I’m not using as much. I’m also doing a no buy until my collection fits comfortably into my organizer again.
    This challenge of keeping only as much makeup as I can fit into one space has really changed the game for me. I’m much more selective about what I do and don’t like in products which has led me to be more intentional with my makeup spending.
    I’m not as easily influenced by social media nor do I feel the makeup “fomo”. I also do not buy makeup now unless I can go see and test it in store because sometimes online hype is just that. I want makeup to be love and first sight/ touch and not buy products just to get that dopamine hit you talked about.

  • @Kiterpuss
    @Kiterpuss 10 месяцев назад +2

    The things that really snapped me out of the FOMO and gave me a realistic sense of "will I actually use this?" was when I made a full inventory and forced myself to test everything. I literally made a paper and pen list of everything and made it a rule I could only use/test something three times until I had tested everything in that category.
    I eventually found that when I forced myself to use certain products/formulas/colors I wasn't enthused. Either I wanted to use something else or I couldn't make that one purple lipstick look decent on me no matter what I did.
    Once that realization hit me my entire perspective on *STUFF* changed; I just don't feel any attraction to a purple lipstick anymore because all I see is that miserable "how the heck will I make this work for me?" state of being. There's no dopamine hit from the idwa of acquiring that thing because all it gives me is dread. And that perspective has spread to everything in my life - I don't have the neurotic desire to collect or complete anything now, and it means what I do have makes my life easier and more fulfilling.

    I am at my smallest of my collection. I credit you and Kat for this. Project pan helped me and even though I was never traditional about it, I set myself a target number for things I wanted to have and I never went above that number. For example, I never went above six eyeshadow palettes and right now I am at two. I just decluttered one Natasha Denona, the Retro Glam (had panned 8 shades and didn’t like the others). I completely finished or just panned the Retro, which I loved and decluttered the Kaleidos Nebula and Escape Pod(had panned 6 shades on each but I think they grew bad because my eyes hurt after I wore them). I even have only one mascara and one powder. Hurray. It helped I never had a massive collection but I really wanted to buy stuff and didn’t. Now, I don’t even wanna buy because I find most items, uninspiring.

    I agree with everything point you make here, i am also an over consumer of makeup and skincare and have in the last 3 years pulled right back, i still have too much 😬 i wish brands would get more on board and sell smaller sizes a bit like benefit and tarte that sell "travel" size products so i could buy and try and use up 6 or so foundations in a year and probably buy 1 fullsize favorite.

    I tried decluttering and it's always backfired on me, so I "hate pan" instead. It's an alternative that works for me as I tend to really rip through my project pans so this way I can do it without feeling guilty abt decimating a blush or eyeshadow and turning it into a lip gloss or nail polish.

    whenever I feel like I'm jonesing for something new, I go into my stash and look at all the lovely things I already have - rediscovering them because often they're hidden away and I forget about them. It's also overwhelming for me and I decide quickly that I don't need anything new!
    I think there is an addiction element because the visual consuming, purchasing and collecting has gotta be a dopamine hit which keeps us repeating the process.
    I'm also trying to project pan which has been hard in recent years because I'm a HCW and makeup was just too hard (always exhausted) and not worth it when masked up, and even goggled-up, at times. It's a definite process and it's gotten easier with time and I wish I was as prolific as other panners at moving through my stash but I'm also a pretty sheer makeup wearer for work (and dry skin doesn't really like many layers) but "post-pandemic" it's getting easier.

    Great Video Hailey! Thanks for sharing your story. I have way too much makeup but am lucky I can share with my relatives. I have started to remind myself that I will not use brightly coloured eyeshadows and to make sure I buy good quality items that last. Unfortunately (or fortunately!) I have fallen in love with Lisa Eldridge's foundation and will probably repurchase that when I run out. Her eyeshadows, lipsticks and highlighter while expensive are fabulous. I can't wait till she releases a concealer. I have also tried to buy items that have options - I bought a Denessa Myricks blush palette which had pinks and oranges that could be mixed. I remind myself that Mecca (and Sephora if you can get someone's attention!) do give out samples so you can try products. I'm trying to focus on quality not quantity for myself. I've always been interested in the newest releases of makeup, but wish that companies would produce more minis so it is easier to try them.

    I know that the fun-colored stuff is my problem area. I love lipstick, eye shadow, and nail polish.
    What I try to do when it comes to new eyeshadow palettes I go through all my old ones and see if I have the colors in the new palette that I'm thinking of buying. Most of the time I can find almost the exact same colors in the palettes that I own. If I can't then I also try to figure out how often I will actually use that palette. A lot of the time I can talk myself out of getting it and if I do buy it I almost always use it.
    Same goes for lipstick and nail polish.

    What really resonated for me was that yes, having a bit of variety and a, for example, year supply of something is manageable. I've been part of MakeupRehab since about 2018 and it wasn't always been smooth since I've gone through such intense stress periods that I just gave up talking myself out of some purchases. But I've tried to keep up with my inventory through all this time and that has been incredibly satisfying. My stash is bigger than it was in 2018, but I feel like I still managed to mostly buy products that work for my preferences and needs, and panned what I could. My preferences changed over the past two years so now I'm actually excited to condense my collection that tiny bit so that everything will be fun to reach for :)

    I always love these types of videos cause it brings me back to reality on how much makeup I actually need. I don’t have “that” much makeup, like five to eight in each category, but it’s definitely more than I can use up in time before it expires and I don’t even wear makeup constantly. I really want to limit myself before it gets too out of hand but especially with the holidays coming up it’s a struggle… 🙃

    Thanks for making this video. It's very insightful. You're right that it is an addiction, and it's not an easy one to recover from.
    I've been doing better than I thought I would with my low-buy this year, and I'm kinda proud of myself. I've also been surprisingly OK with not buying palettes this year because I haven't been using my palettes as often as my single shadows this year, and when I have been using my palettes, I already have the ones that I want to be using (that's what's helping me not buy the new ND palette - I can't see myself wanting to use it over Retro or Glam). I think I somehow just chose the right time in my life to try it, and I think I'm going to be able to keep it up next year, too. I don't want to completely restrict myself from buying makeup, but my low-buy has made me more mindful about my purchasing, and not just my makeup purchasing (e.g. I almost placed a few dress orders this year, but didn't end up placing them because I couldn't see myself wanting to wear any if the dresses over the dresses that I already own and love).

But I am in a few discord groups and they are such a lovely bunch, so undterstanding and helpful and uplifting. I am not at the end all be all, but in the first years I could not let go of anything and tried to pan to the last. But this year I am slowly able to declutter at least some stuff. I have found a group for makeup exchange and its the best feeling to see someone get joy out of things that have been just sitting around and never getting touched. I take home some stuff too, but in moderation and its free, so at least nothing spent on those.

    Pretty hair and makeup 😍 I’m generally pretty minimalist but I don’t like to get bored so I keep everything on a rotation but I usually hyperfixate on shopping when I’m having a tough time. Makeup has been my hyperfixation this year with an aging mom. My collection is manageable but the largest it’s ever been. My favorite powder has been discontinued, I’ve slowed down using it and have a back up but I’ve been buying a lot trying to find it’s replacement. I’m planning a low buy on makeup for next year

    Honestly, moving really helped me get rid of stuff. I already knew I had a bad habit, but it wasn't until I moved that I decluttered. Also having a place to donate stuff to (I do Project Beauty Share) really helps. When I moved, I had a smaller area and shelves to put stuff in so I had to get rid of some things. And when I went through the whole stash, I was like "Wow, I really don't need anymore makeup right now". And repeating that in my head when I'm out at TJ Maxx and other places with makeup really helped me. I still have a bit of a problem with skincare, because there's so many different formulas (and my skin is still just really fucked lol) but the makeup is under control now.

    I'm selling very cheaply the unopened or barely used a couple of times nail polishes I have been hoarding, so I can still have room for the formulas and brands I know and love. Sometimes when the type I love goes discontinued I panic and look for a good dupe, and it makes me buy two bottles of different brands (so I have a back up). Luckily I have cheap tastes for most of my nail polishes (I splurge only for holographic toppers) but they still take room in my backup bag and on my shelves.

    Ladies, let's call it for what it is:IT IS AN ADDICTION! I took out everything I had by category and laid them 😮out on the floor. I was horrified and realized that I couldn't possibly use what I had in the next at least 5 years! I already had old stuff, expensive lipstick smelling like crayons, I got embarrassed by how much money I wasted. The biggest thing though, is that I STOPPED BUYING ANYTHING. I'm de cluttering in waves, it does get easier. I've also started thinking about what the real reason is for buying so much stuff.

    Great video! I got to 500 nail polishes and started a project to wear each of them once. Here I am six years later with about two hundred and four years to go... it's been eye opening to say the least! (but have you seen that new OPI big zodiac energy collection? OH MY!)

    i know that it is quite the brutal decision, but the thing that got m to stop lusting after palettes as much was depotting most of mine. now that i actually have to consider the individual shades of everything and see that i already have hundreds of eye shadow items the appeal of buying a whole new palette has just reduced to nothing.
    and if gutting all palettes seems like too much, even just doing one or two whose packaging you're not too precious about can help put things into perspective (and i just kept really pretty packaging as a separate item, it's not the packaging that goes bad, it's the inside)

    Great tips. I need to actually just sit down and inventory everything. Sounds so daunting! My problem area is definitely highlight and eyeshadow. Though my blush is getting out of control now too because I keep buying random ones looking for a *certain* shade. So dumb. 🙄🙄😂

    What is working for me is doing a Makeup inventory and tracking my used. At the beginning of the year, I use at least once every item. Then, for a time, I use what I want. After maybe 3 months, I see what I didn't use in that time and try to focus on them. If after a month I find myself that I don't like it or have to force myself to use it, I will declutter.
    I too, look at all the colors I have. If the item I want to buy is the same or too similar, I won't buy it.

    💜💜💜tfs💜💜💜 amazing tips.. I have been behaving myself of late - but then they had a special on the Sally Hansen nail polish Sesame Street collection and it may of accidentally fallen into my cart and I may of accidentally checked out - but that's not too bad as that's the first polish in over 12 months for me!!! Polish is my Kryptonite.. but other than that, no beauty purchases...

    I'm not an excessive makeup buyer anymore. I just get what I need, but I must admit, I do have 12 lipsticks which is a bit much IMO. It's all, everything I use for makeup, in a small train case.
    I have a large train case that has trays that stack. I have two large trays of nail polish and one with top coats, supplies and swatches. I do have a deep desire for nail polish, but I keep it in check by exploiting my OCD (Yes I really do have it and am not using it a figure of speech) I have my nail polish extremely organized in every way and will not put a polish in unless one comes out. I love all my nail polish at this point, so it's very rare one goes in.
    I hear ya when you say you had so much you hated it. I used to have about 300 nail polishes. I do my nails twice a week, so many were neglected and I just didn't like the setup (two large train cases) or the decision making anymore. I have 165 now and I do wear more than one at a time sometimes + some toppers. I use all/most of my nail polishes once a year, and that works for me. I'm happy with that.
    In the 80s mascara was good for 1 year. In the 90s it was good for 6 months. Now it's 3 months and the tube is the same size and the price is high. I have allergies to many cosmetics I put near my eyes and also on my face. Only my lips are good.
    I have to use high end because, for some reason, I am not allergic to these. I am not getting rid of my big tube of high end mascara in 3 months. I realize it goes bad because they have taken out more and more preservatives, but I know the worst thing that will happen to me is I'll get a sty. I have had mine for about 4-4 1/2 months. I'll get rid of it at the 6 month mark.
    I never get rid of powder makeup. Never. I do spray them with alcohol now and then.

    Great video! I have also changed my habits big time. I now just wait a month and see if I still really want the product. 98% of the time I find I don’t want it anymore. Initially I think I was just excited for new and shiny things. After a bit of time passed I didn’t want it anymore. If I still had a strong FOMO I go down and look thru my collection and realize I already have a similar product in formulas that I love. This has really helped me. But if I have an oopsies moment and screw up - I will go thru my collection and pass on less used products to my friends. This keeps my collection in check.

    I have a good amount of makeup but months can pass and I didn't buy any. What I really struggle with it's that I hate to pay for shipping and so when I'm forced to buy online (e.g. Kaleidos) I always need to reach the free shipping. This is something that makes me overbuying.

    I had a wake up call recently. I had already stopped buying last year but was feeling a bit overwhelmed, it wasn’t hordes but having 6 highlighters and 10 eye shadow pallets when I do the same look every time I wear it. I was also feeling guilt on the price. I started selling it all on eBay last week. 1 face pallet (used once) and a new highlighter and eyeshadow quad sold and gone, I already feel lighter. Can’t wait for the next lot I sell.

    On a no-buy myself and honestly I'm kind of already picky about the makeup I like, but with this no-buy I've gotten down to what I like and don't like with colors. I did a fairly big lipstick and lipgloss declutter earlier this year and that was wonderful. I'm in the US and we have a store called Bath and Body Works. To say I need a no-buy of that after this year is an understatement. I'm fine with it as long as I have all the candles to get through this fall and winter and next and enough shower gel for next year (I take two showers most summer days since I do workout some). I have so many Ulta points and buying most makeup next year with them will be perfectly fine with me. I already have planned to grab a Pat McGrath and a Natasha Denona palette with Ulta points, a new black eyeliner and maybe a few colored ones. I do want to make a few other makeup purchase elsewhere, but just a few and some of my staples I can't get at Ulta, so buying them elsewhere will happen. All and all I'm ready to be off this no-buy and put in what I've learned into action with makeup purchases.

    Good video. I’m making my inventory now. It’s shocking how much I have! I’ll never get through it all so a lot of it is on the chopping block. I’ve tossed a lot but I still have a lot.

    you have to hit a wall at some point. when it stops being fun is a good sign. then you can actively work on degrading and downplaying the importance of makeup and the importance of the next new thing. none of rhis really matters. we've all made other people rich. and the things you own end up owning you.
