    Looks to be a square cut from a piece of vehicle netting, it looks like one of several weaves found on WWII vehicle netting. Not designed for helmets per se but my understanding is that after it was determined the netting was ineffective for vehicles they were cut up and used by allied troops on helmets where it did a better job. The US actually developed its own shrimp net variation for helmets labeled "Net, Helmet, with Band" commonly referred to as the M44 net by collectors. This was the only US manufactured helmet net and can be seen in the ETO starting in late 1944 becoming more common as the war progressed. Original M44 nets are harder to find and typically command a higher price than cut vehicle nets but the cut vehicle netting displays great and was commonly seen in the ETO.

      You’re exactly right. The video I linked in the pinned comment has more info on what you said if you’re interested. I’m hoping to get a “Net, Helmet, with band” sometime, but originals are hard to find. Might get a foreign copy for reenacting

    • @nickman983
      @nickman983 Год назад

      @@WorldWarWisdom They're definitely still out there, just takes some time for them to pop up and when they do they tend to go for $100+ pricey for a net but they're a must have for any US helmet collectors. The cut vehicle nets would do very well for reenacting but if you want more of that M44 net look the Danish M48 nets are somewhat close. I've actually got one of those Danish M48s I bought by mistake when trying to get my original M44 nets. I got it for cheap and have no use for it. It's missing the band but if you want it for reenacting I can potentially send it your way, just let me know and I can drop you an email to sort it out.

    I personally never cared for these nets. I like the 1/2 inch square ones way better. And you can actually put scrim in those too. I liked your idea of using a rubber band though. I know from experience that nets without draw strings are a real pain to put on and make look good. Yours still needs to be tighter fitting but you're on the right track!
