In fact Motor Trend noted: "Proving it wasn't a one-trick electric pony, the Model 3 also bested the BMW on our figure-eight loop, despite wearing all-season tires." They also tested a G70 ($44,895 as tested) which came in 2nd over the '19 330i.
So, no the '19 M3 is not given to beat the Tesla Performance. Here is what else Motor Trend had to say about the Model 3:
"That electric drivetrain also provides the framework for the rest of this paradigm shift. The near-silent, rocket-like acceleration is only the first step. On our test runs out in the real world, one-pedal driving quickly became a matter of course. Lift off the accelerator, and regen instantly begins to slow the car. Time it right, and you can navigate through even heavy traffic with only an occasional feathering of the brake pedal. Walton was smitten. 'Driving feels new and novel again. The way it re-introduces driving enthusiasm to a driving enthusiast is remarkable.' "
While both the BMW and Genesis also offer adaptive cruise control, the Tesla's version was a revelation. The drivetrain's instant power and regen meant the Model 3 had no problem maintaining a consistent distance, making micro-fast adjustments on the fly as the speed of traffic ebbed and flowed. This precision was in stark contrast to the response of the turbo-fours in both the 330i and G70, whose slow reaction times routinely left plenty of room for another car to jump in.
The Tesla Model 3 wins this competition because it has thoroughly rewritten the rules of what a compact sport sedan can be. As it turns out, the number 3 is still the benchmark number for this segment. It just now happens to be a different type of 3."

I own a Model 3 Performance and track it often. Brilliant. A complete revelation. Will never go back to an RS4 or M3. Audi’s and BMW’s feel like 100 year old horse and buggy’s compared to my Tesla.

I would question the brake test, the cars landed so closely that a major factor is the difference in time between when the different drivers hit the brakes. At 70 mph, a tenth of a second is more than 8 feet. Repeating the test several times while switching drivers would verify the observed results, or maybe modify them.
The other two tests seem valid though.

I am so getting a 3P. Lower price, better real-world performance, lower center of gravity (= yet more fun), no smog checks, no oil changes, zero trips to the gas station and charged by my solar panels.
FWIW: proper reporting of the quarter mile must include trap speed.
Yeah man, that's the future, what can you ask for? But some people prefer the sound, the smell of gas, other stuff that they may find fun. And to be honest some people don't even care about gas, if they can afford it they will just drive across country. Tesla's have their downsides also

Bulgarian Lion , most people charge at home- full tank every day, Superchargers take 30 minutes. Batteries are good for 300,000-500,000 miles, the car 1 million miles, according to the factory. Tesla’s are expected to go up in value because in 2-3 years you can send them out autonomously to make you money from ride sharing.

The kick down of the BMW is very impressive, but I don't understand why the appropriate gear isn't selected during a rolling race. I am an ev driver (not tesla) but don't get too excited over the ev advantage that the ice has to kick down. In a race you are always in the most appropriate gear.
Exactly, i have a car with 280hp. And when i roll in first gear at 3 to 4k rpms yes... it can fly off very fast. But in the wrong gear.. even 280hp can be slow as fuck.
Matt says why in the video. The cars are in 'real world conditions', ie. cruising along the motorway and then you decide you want to quickly blast past another vehicle. It's unlikely you'll be holding your car in 3rd gear on the motorway. So it's more of a test about how quickly the cars react to a driver flooring the throttle under normal cruising along conditions. Would be nice if Matt and co could do both types of test. One in a 'cruising mode' and one with the cars locked in the correct gear.
@@SpottedCreeper interesting real world. Motorways are multi lane roads, so quickly blasting past not necessary. On single lane roads, however you may wish to overtake and blast past, but in that situation you would choose your gear for maximum blast.

My dude the Model 3 works amazingly well in races with "Track mode" and can stay at 230kph on highway speed for 30-45min without overheating

I think for the brake test you should use cruise control so everyone is at the same speed and you can really brake at the right moment.
They need to line up first before putting the car into cruise control mode.

@Falk M yeah but do you live in Germany? Cause I don't. Model 3 does struggle a bit in the corners and you definitely struggle to power slide in it or drift.
@Falk M all fair points but a lot of us don't live in Germany to be able to max a car out. Charging on long journeys is not really a huge problem if you are charging via superchargers and they're getting better all the time with the recently released V3. Tesla's are not cheap and aren't for everyone. They've only been in production for the past 10 years on a mass scale so there will be initial problems like for any manufacturer that started out but the progression is definitely there and really says something. The processes in manufacturing are constantly being evolved.
@Falk M you can opt to charge to full at a supercharger. Lot of time is a relative term and concept. 20 30 minutes for one man is a lot of time. For another, it's near makes no difference with the right planning. Bare in mind that at 120kph it's not the same level of drain on the battery.

@Falk M Assuming there's not a queue at the counter to pay. Premium fill up prices on the motorway too at least in the UK. As I've said previously Tesla's won't suit everyone. You trying to tell me there are not build quality issues, electrical or mechanical issues on these German cars? 😂😂 These German cars are not class leading for reliability in any department. You might need to realign your expectations if you expect a new innovative product that disrupts an established industry upside down, to be a lot cheaper than the established players. And let's be clear. These German cars are extremely expensive, and most certainly not the cars to run into the ground with. Battery degradation is minor on Tesla's. Their batteries will do several thousands of miles happily.

@@VNCTHE1 Tesla does not have a gearbox. xD. EV cars hands down are fast in terms of initial acceleration but they don't have great top speeds. A fast petrol car will drop them.
@@planes1mple296 Tesla essentially has a 1-Speed manual with no neutral or reverse, and no clutch. This makes it even more reliable than a manual because you don't have synchronizes, dog gears or shift forks. All it is is a 9:1 reduction directly connected to the electric motor and wheels. So yes, it is the best gear box :)
@@planes1mple296 Oh, and does it really matter that some 500-600hp petrol cars are faster than a Tesla after 130mph? I mean idk where you drive where passing power at 130mph+ (200kmh+) is so important, but nevertheless, Teslas are still quick at high speeds...just not as quick when you compare them to their 0-100mph sprints.

@@uham999 yes the BMW is like the commin model T compared to a Tesla (though BMW's German over engineeri G is a fail compared to the model T and Tesla's industry leading engineering) .
@@airgliderz Thinking about it, you're probably right. Model T engine is basically the same technology as the BMW. I'm sure the market will decide in the end. Either we will all me driving electric in the future if it is better tech or if it isn't then we won't. The market obviously decided at some point that the model T was better than a horse for most of us although I'm sure that there were loads of people at the time that thought a horse was better.

For drag racing you don't need a "track mode", it's slowing down acceleration with 0.1-2 second, track mode is required on the track, curves and hatd turns and for breaking, have more aggressive regen than standard, so final result could ve even better if track mode was off.

Fact is the Model 3P is very, very consistent off the line. Here is an example of a Giulia QV at the strip:

So with a really good driver the QV will possibly edge out a Model 3P if the Tesla driver is really bad and doesn't know how to stomp on the accelerator really hard. lol.

Manual gearbox is best because you dont have to wait for kickdown. Just put it in 3rd when you suspect hard acceleration may be required and floor accelerator pedal as necessary.

You can't break the laws of Physics and in this case, it's the relationship between Torque, Electricity and Magnetism. The instant torque, instant and continuous acceleration and the speed generated by an electric motor can never be achieved by a gas engine car. As Elon Musks says with every iteration a technology becomes better and better and in the near future, I can see Tesla being untouchable unless this gas car companies go full Electric. Not to mention that Tesla is close to Level 5 autonomous driving.

SkyYeti _ I get that point, but: I drive a very similar car to the ones tested here (3.0 supercharged V6 putting out 460bhp) and I literally *never* put the hammer down like that to just “get past another vehicle”. The only times the throttle goes to the floor is when I’m having fun. And when that happens, I’m not cruising on Auto at 1100rpm.
Besides that, I’m not saying to not do this “real life” test at all. I’m just asking why not also do the other one, where you’re holding the right gear. As a car enthusiast looking at sports car comparisons, that’s much more valuable info for me.

Why “kick it down” in the roll race rather than starting at a proper rpm in the powerband via the paddle shifter??
- Yes, it would. You can leave it in “drive” and use the paddles to shift to desired gear/rpm and it will shift automatically before the rev limiter. This works in most modern cars. I’m not suggesting using “manual mode” and shifting each gear via the paddles.

Tip for launching bmw M cars and most models with launch control, use the steering wheel turning knob to set the launching rpm, with the m3's toque down low, its way to usefull.

@@TuddecBMW Tesla "fanboys" base their arguments on the ways in which a Tesla is actually better. BMW "fanboys" just say yeah but this yeah but that ooh it looks better. Never saying says it actually is. Noise and looks don't count btw as they're subjective
