Painting a Set of Star Wars The Mandalorian Costume Armor (Beskar Version) Using Alclad II Chrome

  • This is a set of resin armor that I painted to replicate the Beskar armor look for my Mandalorian costume that I'm currently working on. I purchased the armor kit from Josh Jones (J and K Props on Facebook). After doing the preliminary prep work on the resin parts, I began to prep for paint. I used Rustoleum Black Gloss as a base coat. I then hit the parts with a 2K automotive clear coat. I then wet sand the clear coat to knock down any prominent orange peel. I clean the parts with rubbing alcohol prior to applying the Chrome paint to clear off contaminants or oils from my hands. Finally, a second coat of 2K clear coat is applied lightly to seal the Chrome in prior to weathering the armor. I typically wait a day in between coats to ensure that the paint cures. Hit me up with comments or any questions that you may have. Thanks for watching, and happy building!

Appreciate this video. I have the cheap HF gun but haven't used it yet because I'm afraid it will put down too much paint. I've just been using my airbrush but it's difficult to get the finish even on large pieces.
You mentioned you started with the cheap HF spray gun, were you able to get similar results using Alclad? The stuff is so thin.

Thank you!...And yes, absolutely. I started with that $20 HF gun. So, you can control the air, fan, and the amount of paint that comes out on the guns. Play with the PSI from 15-20. Keep the fan at about 12-14 inches. And keep the paint flow at minimum. I mean, turn it off, and open it up just a bit. Try running a few test pieces in the exact same way that you plan on painting your armor. Use at least a 12×12 piece of metal or plastic. Prime it and paint it gloss black. Then run the Alclad. Do a couple of tests until you are happy with the results. Play with the settings a bit. Even if you mess up on your armor, you can always wipe everything clean with lacquer thinner and start again. Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck!

What kind of spray gun did you use for alclad?

Firespray, once painted do you need to Clear the Alclad 2. Also how durable is it once dry and is it susceptible to marks from Finger Prints?

Hey...Apologies for the delayed response. I didn't receive a notification for some reason. So, if the item that you paint is mostly on display, you do not need to apply a clear coat. Alclad is pretty durable. However, if you are going to handle the item a lot, then you should apply a coat of clear. Now...Alclad does not accept a clear coat very well. you will harm the final finish of the chrome. If you want to use an automotive 2K clear, then you must use a layer of Alclad Aqua Gloss to protect the chrome first. I have been using Minwax Polyurethane Clear Gloss directly on the Alclad lately. It accepts that very well without dulling out the chrome much. As soon as I have some time, I will put up another paint video and use the Minwax to clear. Thanks for your support, and keep building and painting!

amazinggg result, quick question, if the mandalo is a dark chrome, why didnt you used the black chrome instead ? is it too dark ? or to bright ? i am about to paint mine and since i already order the black chrome that question pop pop in my head.

Hello, and that is a very good question that you are asking. I personally have not used the black chrome. However, I have used airframe aluminum and another chrome color by Alclad that I can't think of at the top of my head. They are both darker than the chrome though. I found them both to be too dark or they did not lay down as much coverage as the chrome. Also, although most people lay chrome down over a black gloss base coat, other colors may be used as base coats. For example, if your black chrome ends up being too dark, you may use a white or gray base coat instead of black. I have made many test pieces and I found that I personally prefer the regular chrome over the others. It is the easiest to lay down and control opacity with. I start off with a black gloss base, and I apply about 60-80% chrome over that. I can keep it darker at 60% or I can brighten it with 80%. What I have been doing is finishing the Alclad bright, and then giving it a complete layer of black wash over it. That seems to give me a nice darkened chrome airframe aluminum look. My advice would be to do a few test pieces using different methods before painting your parts. Use plastic spoons or some other cheap pieces. If you have time, check out my jetpack video where I quickly talk about opacity between 4:45 and 6:00:

I typically do not wet sand the clear coat unless I end up with too much orange peel texture. Lately I've been using just Rustoleum black gloss as a base coat without clear coat. Seems to work pretty well.

Really great shine! The clear coat you use is it the spray max 2k or is it another brand? Really looking to duplicate your results.

Thank you! Really appreciate it. I usually use an automotive 2K from Custom Paints. Any inexpensive automotive clear coat would work well. I've heard of people using the spray max 2K and getting excellent results. I may pick up a can in the future to try it out. Be sure to try it on a test panel prior to painting your armor or helmet. Good luck brother!

Nice work, goingmdown the same road, spraying, screwing it up, sanding off, rinse and repeat 😁
Does that need a final coat of clear over the Alclad ? Or can leave it as is ?

@@firespraypilotcosplayandpr4195 , the 2k must reactivate the Alclad, I've been finding that out, so the aqua coat must sit on top of the Alclad without disturbing it.

@@fizzyelectricity Yes, that's correct. I didn't know that at the time either. Try using the Minwax Polyurethane clear gloss or semi-gloss. It works well and it will not damage the Alclad 👍
