    Well done....good training stopped a major accident happening. Can I ask how you got him unhitched so quickly. Do you have quick hitch fastenings? If so...how do they fix onto the harness??

    Accidents happen. You did well and didn't punish him for his (or yours. I don't know) mistake. I've had horses for 30ish years, but I've never driven one... I'm fact, I don't think I've ever even been In sulky/cart/buggy etc... Nor have I ever long reined a horse, so I'm clueless. I have idea what went wrong though initially it looked like a tack failure, then panic. I kept thinking, it's a shame you weren't able to rack him back up and chill out in that area, then run him through a few times, so his last association with that area was a pleasant one. Thanks for filming. Good luck to you.
    Edit : Not a tack failure. He got worried and moved to his offsideand somehow the post ended up on the inside of the shaft. Then it hit the foot rest and boom. The tack either breaks or dislodges. Perfect learning opportunities for the horse, you and us! Cheers. Thanks for posting this video.

      bad luck. If you're on a horse and they side step a puddle no big deal. Unfortunately there's a lot of extra vehicle when driving. He side stepped, got the post between him and the shaft and got us wedged in. Horses are strong and his power bent the tree in half releasing him from the cart. Few other failures of equipment (in a good way) released him fully.
      As for driving, highly recommend! As I age and cannot ride like I used to driving keeps me competitive and enjoying the horse world.

    What cart do you recommend for beginning driving? I was going to order from Kingston. Would you recommend them?

    • @DutchHollow
      @DutchHollow  7 лет назад +4

      This is a Kingston cart. I've totally wrecked it beyond recognition 2x now and their website makes it easy to buy parts to put it back together again. What I would recommend is NOT getting the bicycle tires but get the solid wheels if you're a newbie. They are much safer. I've had the bike tires explode while out before and that'd a disaster.

    The horse was scared of the water horses can't see depth so that to them looks like a black hole you shouldn't force them through it but you should walk them by it until they are comfortable good job handling the situation though

      He walked through it just fine and many other puddles earlier. He just had a brain fart this time

    Here where not the horse and not the driver failured. Both are well trained. (I don't like tongue clicking. In my long life as an professional coachman I never done this! )
    In this case broke the harness. A single horse has to be a very special kind of horse, never get spooked, absolutely in trust, obedience and strengt. And an eye-catcher too.

    I have one of those carts--I don't like it! The shafts are too narrow to accommodate the horse and some horses panic because of that--too restrictive.... Many an accident has happened with that type of cart.

    • @DutchHollow
      @DutchHollow  2 года назад

      It's great for a training cart. Loud, restrictive and I don't care if they beat up t up. Competition he drives a very fancy marathon vehicle. But I always start with the worst.

    Cart sure makes a lot of noise?? I'am surprised you were able to drive the horse at all??

    • @DutchHollow
      @DutchHollow  5 лет назад +1

      That's more the camera picking up every sound. It really isn't that loud. Besides, i could be driving a fireworks factory and the horses shouldn't notice anyway. Their job is to pull and listen to me only.

    Look I get people have different hobbies and I am by no means one of those soft PETA people but why do people still up horses to get around like this? Why not just ride the horse instead of stressing it out with the loud and heavy carriage

    • @DutchHollow
      @DutchHollow  5 лет назад +8

      Actually driving is so much less stressful for the horse. The carriage only weighs 75lbs and has huge wheels. Rolling weight is very easy to move. Think how easy it is to push a shopping cart vs you trying to carry that weight. Also there is no weight on their backs, so they have no added weigh on their joints.
      We train all horses to drive before riding which we don't do until they are 5 yeats old because rising is so hard on joints.
      As for the noise that's just my camera Mic being overly sensitive. Think how wind noise on a phone make it sound like you're in a hurricane when it's just a breeze

    • @danehales2021
      @danehales2021 5 лет назад +1

      Dutch Hollow Acres good points. I am ignorant about the subject. Maybe I just have a bad taste in my mouth from seeing people drive them around in big cities. And being around horse a lot I do think navigating big city streets can be super stressful for a horse

    • @Saartje05
      @Saartje05 3 года назад

      Horses aren't stressed out normally. This was just an accident. Even horses in the field without someone riding or driving it can have one. They actually like driving. The 'bolder' the more fun they have. We have dressage lessons and they're important for learning but they love the cone driving. When they see them the ears go forward and they're off, they love it.

    • @Saartje05
      @Saartje05 3 года назад

      @@danehales2021 We drive and are member of a club that's still growing. But driving in a city with loads of traffic is a HUGE no. It's no fun for the horses, too dangerous for them and the people around. A bit traffic is ok, but in a very busy city, no way.
