  • I was already geared up to listen to this album, so I thought, "Why not rustle up some viewers to enjoy it with me?" This record is just as bold and epic as I expected, but there were still a lot of surprises along the way. Let me know your thoughts on my first-take reaction to Cowboy Carter.

Lifelong Beyoncé fan, and this is by far her best album. Loved the reaction

This album has many layers in its messaging. The surface level is about genre bending but beneath that is a history lesson on Country music and its origins in Black music, then below that is a critic of America itself. It is masterfully done and very coded. Tyrant in particular comes across as a hypersexual song but if you read the lyrics line by line, there's a different message going on. I refer to it as Strange Fruit 2.0. Same for Alligator Tears. On the surface it's about a toxic love relationship but it's really about white tears within the historical context of America and its impact on the black community. This album needs to be studied at an academic level.
The deeper meanings within this album may be ignored as it is hard for many to contend with but like Beyoncé says "Now is the time to face the wind. Now ain't the time to pretend".
    Happy Listening❤

I have my moments, thanks. So much to learn, though, and records like this one keep us learning.

this album is a bit overwhelming on my first listen, it felt like a chore because of the range of the album. But now it just flows so seamlessly and, i need even more of country beyonce lol. Love your observation on this album 💛💛💛🐝

Curious how you feel about Taylor Swifts TTPS? If CC felt like a chore then TTPS was probably torture for you

Renaissance is an all-time favorite of mine. I would love to react to it.

I have heard it theorized that Alligator tears is about a black person’s love for their country. An almost bitter dedication to a manipulative whiny little fill in the blank. We prop up our nation, we love it beyond itself. It should also be noted that Alligators are much more subdued than crocodiles but no less dangerous. And similarly I have heard theory that Just for Fun contrasts the experience of black and white (or rich and poor? Seen and unseen? I don’t know) people and what echoes in their minds.

Both tracks beg for a closer listen. Thank you for these ideas to ponder.

Also cause alligators are native to the US. Compared to crocodiles

Actually the the last song what's buried here are the bones of our ancestors that was enslaved.

The lyrics read “them old ideas are buried here.” So I was reacting to the “actual” lyrics, but I absolutely agree there’s other references imbedded there.

Great reaction. I especially agree with your opinion on Jolene. It's a respectful well interpretation cover.

Hank Williams Sr. (the godfather of country music), said in his biography that everything he knew about country music he learned from a homeless black guy he ran into playing and singing for money downtown.

Hank Williams was practically a blues musician. The musical traditions are all so intertwined, it’s surprising to me that we continue to entertain conversations about who “owns” the music.

Leave it to a Caucasian man to give credit to country music to everybody but the people who invented it. Country music don't have any Spanish influence whatsoever. SMDH

I know it’s a long video, but you clearly didn’t view it all. Also, for your edification, I have a separate video where I specifically discuss the Black origins of country music. And denying the Latin influence on the “Western” part of country and Western is not a good look.

    • @RussellDale6019

Country music is country music all white people did was colonize an whitewash it diluted it. Also Nelly is not country Nelly would sound ridiculous on this album . And the song that you said Andre 3000 should be on or rather sounded like. Was nonsense that was more Tina Turner.

Key instruments and some of the stylings were black originated, however Mexicans brought the aesthetics.
