What a phenomenal livestream. You made me cry at the end there. I think you were really spot on with your thoughts on what Beyonce may be trying to achieve with this album. The genre busting aspect, calling out America's oppressive history & wanting to form a new better future. Her own personal journey reflecting the larger struggle people have with being confined & labelled by others... This album really blew me away too.

Something you might not be aware of but Paul McCartney has gone on record saying that Blackbird was written for black women's struggles during the civil rights movement. So in some ways it always had that context of hope & liberation for those facing oppression. I really love that Beyonce took it a step further by giving other black women who are country music artists a chance to shine. To have their moment "in the light of the dark black night".

The whole blackbird recontextualizing is actually perfect. The original song was in fact written for the first black women to attend a non segregated school who were bullied and harassed. Paul McCartney wrote it for them. And now Beyonce is singing it for other black women who, like her, face backlash for singing country music. It’speefect

A note about Spaghetti: It def has that outlaw feel for a reason. So many country music legends cemented themselves with an "outlaw" image, Johnny Cash most notably! Country fans (i.e. Republican voters) love the outlaw image - as long as its a white man. If a black man makes a rap song about criminality, certain white ppl will use it to point how our "culture" is "ruining america" but a white man can grab an acoustic guitar and sing about the same things, and the country music fans herald them as greats. The inclusion of Shaboozey - a black country rapper - on that song really drives the point home!

the lore of this album runs so deep it’ll be studied in universities for years just like self-titled, lemonade and renaissance have been.
the concept of a drunken night listening to a radio station is SO well executed. she goes from lamenting about america’s horrid past, to reminiscing on her childhood, to struggling as a parent, to imagining her mother’s heartache and seeking revenge, to getting high and experiencing a bad trip, to falling in love and losing it then finding it again, imagining herself in a movie, coming down, picking herself up and leaving the bar.
all of this executed while also paying homage to americana/folk and country’s black roots, weaving together interpolations and samples from a whole host of other collaborators.
she really is a master of her craft AND a student of the past, always paying homage to those who came before her in order to push culture and art FORWARD.
34 years in this business and she ain’t slowing down yet. a LEGEND.
many laymans will continue to appear foolish due to their lack of comprehension regarding this album and indeed her career as a whole

a simple google search will show you that the albums i mentioned are STUDIED IN UNIVERSITIES ACROSS THE WORLD.
why mention another woman in this comment section? her artistry has nothing to do with beyoncé.
this is an AMERICANA album paying homage to the BLACK roots of country, bluegrass & rock whilst incorporating elements of flamenco, irish jig, trap, r&b and hiphop. NOTHING to do with taylor’s album.
also beyoncé has long been regarded as an artist. the critics reviews for SELF-TITLED are only a google search away, as are the ones for LEMONADE lmao. nothing to do with taylor, or any other person.
you can’t try to rewrite history and dismiss a black artist simply because you prefer your fave.
GO AND STAN TAYLOR! that’s fine. no one cares lmao. simply stay away from beyoncé content. “i love taylor therefore i want every other artist to fail, and if they don’t, i will lie to discredit them” - that sums up your attitude. your LIES will not work around here.

@@jadebel7006She said NOTHING about Taylor on this album. The album speaks for itself and is such ANOTHER cultural reset for music and the audience like with Renaissance. Funny thing is this album ties perfectly into that album going against the narrative you're working overtime to push. When I see reactions to this album most ppl understand the cultural, historic and personal aspects of it while you on the other hand run with a delusion if you will that was generated out of pure hate. Music is suppose to make those who gets it happy, so why are you so bitter when its just music? The call is coming from inside the house and you really need to do some soul searching.

    • @towerstime4690
      @towerstime4690 7 месяцев назад

@@jadebel7006 your comment is laced with racism, bitterness, enmity and is illogical. Did Taylor stop being an artist when she switched from country to pop? Or, did her status as an artist expire when she got out of her folklore period and reverted back to pop music? You sound like a Taylor Swift Stan who is butthurt because Miley snatched that duet from Tay Tay’s hands (and I state this as someone who is a Swiftie).
This album is a work of art and an historical tome. Perhaps you should study more about the themes explored in this album (or if it is easier for you, just replay the final words of the video - it was a terrific wrap up) or read up on American history, especially as it relates to the exploitation of black people and the appropriation of black genius and creativity by white dominated media et al. Or, you back under the bridge you live because it seems you are likely a profligate troll seeking to sow discord and get a reaction from folks (I appreciate I am reacting to your post, but I was bored and your stupidity was too tempting as bread crumbs to pass up).

I don't think you commented on it specifically, but in the YaYa song, she sings "Vote!" in one of the chorus-y bits. I loved that she was basically saying "we gotta keep the faith & we gotta come together to demand the new America we want." It really ties in with American Requiem in my opinion. It's time to stand together & face the wind. It's time to be heard.

    ALERT-
    notice the previous comment:
    27 tracks
    27 years in the business.
    Add to that
27 seperate catagories that define the country music genre.
Initially she planned on releasing Cowboy Carter as Act 1 in the Renaissance series.
But instead she held off until 2 years later.
With this musical artist and genius
    this was deliberate.
The artistry and imagination is top notch.
    As is the music.
A music producer observed that the original version of Black bird is folk music.
But when Beyonce and her fellow artists teamed up to cover it the way they did,
    her version is country music.
So true: history reveals that country music was orginally folk or recalled "hillbilly" music. But when black people added their brand of blues and gospel to it
THEN it became what we call country music.
    But this is more-
I believe this is better described as Americana,
a blend of several genres of music (gospel, rock, blues, folk, pop with strong leanings of several kinds of country). This album has all of that and more- rap, hip hop, trap...
    A true student of music,
    Girlfriend did her homework!
All the negative pushback against her new project worked in her favor, because all it did was draw more attention to this project.
As a result millions and millions are absolutely delighted with Cowboy Carter.
    As am I.
    BRAVO Beyonce!
    BRAVO!
    This is a masterpiece!

The last part of the album flows directly into Renaissance. She recorded this album first, but released Renaissance first because she felt like the people just needed to have fun and dance, coming out of the pandemic. She transports us to another world or galaxy or universe at the end of Cowboy Carter. And that place is where Renaissance lives; pure love and joy and fun 🤗

This album is meant to serve as a musical education of the African Americans historic place w/in Country music, which would sound like Irish Folk (great in It's own right, mind you) if it weren't for the Blues & Gospel of the enslaved Africans. This includes the BANJO, which was created by enslaved Africans in the Caribbean then, later brought to The States.
Yes, the banjo wasn't created by the Appalachians but by Africans.
I could also go into the Black artists that many of the earlier big name white country artists learned from then portrayed as their style....
as it was with Elvis and Black artists like Roy Hamilton, Big Mama Thornton, Chuck Berry and Sister Rosetta Tharpe - The Godmother of Rock & Roll), but it would take awhile. ;) Beyonce adds a bit of those artists work into this album as well.
Her last few projects have been a meld of grand musical production, a mosaic of Black History and how the two interconnect.
It appears that Beyonce is in a period of the Reclamation and Rejoicing of African American Culture, trying to correct the record due to the erasure and gate keeping whilst also trying to push The Culture forward in Unity, Knowledge and Beautiful Experiences and Conversations. 😎
It's what she's become known for.
The Superficial and surface level won't fully appreciate this album over the more curious and expansive minded.

I love the fact that Daughter is sung in Italian and then you have Spaghetti that has some sounds pioneered in Ennio Morricone’s work for spaghetti western (the whistle) while recontextualizing the western figure of the outlaw as some people explained better than I could.
As an Italian I loved this little homage to our contribuition to the western imagery, and she did this to hammer again the point of the cross cultural and cross racial origins country and Americana music.

The fact that Amen transitions SEAMLESSLY to American Requiem if you let the album on loop is crazy to me because the first thing she says is “nothing really ends” like history is bound to repeat itself. And she reinforces that idea by saying “for things to stay the same they have to change again” and I think the idea behind that is that all things we consider the average/normal today were “the different” once and then it becomes the “new normal” again and again.

The run from Jolene > Daughter > Spaghetti > Alligator Tears I always listen to as a story.
Jolene is the warning (I’m warning you don’t come for my man; your peace depends on how you move, Jolene), Daughter is explaining the deadly damage caused by her actions (blood strains on my customer couture; I ripped your dress now you’re all black and blue), Spaghetti is reliving the anger and mindset (I got shooters and I BANG BANG; no matter what the charges is, we ain’t gon’ tell the truth), and Alligator Tears is the hangover from what’s happened/what she’s done and why she’s done it (thinking about leaving? Hell no; how does it feel to be adored?)

I’ve watched plenty of reaction videos to Cowboy Carter to take a pulse of how people are receiving her and this album, at least via this forum. I have to say yours has been extremely refreshing for a myriad reasons, the least of which is you actually include a fulsome and thoughtful enquiry and analysis in your final comments. Well done, and I’m pleased to have recently subscribed so I can check out your other posts.

I have actually lost track of how many times I’ve listened to this album. It plays thru once and then goes into American Requiem and before I know it I’m at Amen again. It is INSANELY brilliant, every single track. Thank you for doing the research and getting all the political and historical references as well.
Song thoughts: American Requiem is probably the best opening track of an album that I have ever heard. It’s powerful and unapologetic and sets the tone for the size and scope of the album. I added it to my election day playlist because it is a call to arms, to stand up to tyranny and to fight for a better world with love. Speaking of, II Most Wanted is 100% a queer love song and if I’m at a wedding and it starts playing for the first dance I am absolutely going to start bawling. The beginning chords actually sounded like Fleetwood Mac’s Landslide to me, which is another plus to an already gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous song. Their voices were made for each other. That one is definitely in my top 5. II Hands II Heaven also makes me sob - it is transcendental, especially the back half. Her voice and the blending and the harmonies just surround you and lift you into the sky. Insaanneee. The vocal talent on display in Alligator Tears is beyond, the sexual energy of Desert Eagle (a kind of gun but also a sex position) is HOT, and the number of times a day that my brain busts into “buckin’, buckin’, woah, buckin’, like a mechanical bull” is just stupid 😂 That whole song is hard to adjust to at first but then will get stuck in your head, I guarantee it. Bodyguard was an immediate favorite - just the energy and the cute sexiness of it all; also Levi’s Jeans was so cute and fun and sweet. I love that the Levi Jean stock has actually gone up since the album came out. Blackbiird was also amazing and Just For Fun is such a spiritual experience and Protector also makes me cry and then Ya Ya raises me back up again and jfc that’s the album. EVERY 👏🏻 SINGLE 👏🏻 TRACK 👏🏻 IS 👏🏻 GOLD. Thank you again for a wonderful reaction!! x

Beyoncé uses her albums to tell a story. It’s like watching a movie. You wouldn’t want to come in 1/4 of the way through, leave and then come back to watch the end or have people to tell you the best part and then go in just to watch that part of the movie. It’s weird, because I didn’t realize that until I watched someone react to her entire Lemonade album recently. Having said all that, let me give you an overview of the movie that is Cowboy Carter:
This whole album is in response to how she was treated at CMA. American Requiem is telling them about themselves. She researched and it took over 5 years for her to develop this album. The album is full of history and reclaiming music that black people/ slaves started, but were kicked out of once it became popular.
Blackbird was written by Paul McCartny to give black women/girls hope during the Civil Rights movement . He saw how they were being treated. That’s why all the singers on the song are black women. The others are four black female country singers.
Let’s just point out that Country radio has an issue with playing black artists so Beyoncé told everyone about her new venture during the Super Bowl then dropped two country songs. The Bey Hive activated and most country stations played her music. But to top it off, her album is presented as it’s own radio station with country legends presenting her music.
This Album was meant to be Act I. This was Beyoncé’s response to how she was treated at the CMA. The requiem funeral procession was trying to let us know that Country Music was rooted and started by blacks. If you look into the history, it started by people putting on black face for minstrel music making fun of the slaves with their banjos. Then people who are credited with starting country, came to black street artists to learn their craft. Once it became big, black people were pushed aside and they started gate keeping the genre.
Same thing happened with rock & roll, jazz, blues, and many of the genres that are considered to have been started in America. Thus, Beyoncé is reclaiming all of the music that we’ve been kicked out of that we helped create. It’s why this album delves into all those genres and ends with her buckin breaking down walls and asking if we can hear her now. Then she says that we are the ones who have to clean ourselves of our father’s sins to end the funeral procession .

1)Bodyguard she get’s upset at the way another woman is looking at her man 2) Jolene she warns the woman don’t try it 3) The woman learns (black & blue on the floor) what happens if you don’t heed the warning. Some of this can also be from the perspective of her mom since her father cheated and her mom is from Louisiana .

Here's my interpretation of Riverdance and why I think it is one of her more interesting tracks. First, you have the juxtaposition of the sound of country and house, two genres that do not seem like they go together (even though it works beautifully). Then, you have the juxtaposition of the verses being more serious, describing a relationship that may be toxic, and the refrain/chorus giving off this happy dancing vibe. Then you also have this repetitiveness of the song. Like there is no drastic change in structure (no bridge or anything that shifts the direction of the song). I see that as symbolizing this toxic relationship. Like she sees the bad in the relationship, but she keeps going back to it. The relationship itself doesn't really change, but she's looking beyond it because she's in love, so the toxicity is like cyclical. So many layers of her artistry!
Oh, btw, your reaction to the first several songs was like holding a mirror up to myself. Girl, I was a messss 😂😭. Great reaction!
Here's my top 5 (ironically I didn't even include Riverdance 😂they're all so good it was hard to choose)

Not sure where my comment went but Alligator Tears 37:21 is related to people who don’t welcome her/Black artists into the country space.
She’s willing to adjust to their demands. “You say change religion now I spend Sundays with you”.
You can apply it to: Slaves were forced to switch religions because the Slaveowners wanted them to convert too.
Similarly, People demanded her to change her accent, because they thought it was wrong.
    Small details.

As a self-identified pop culture expert and Beyonce expert I have no notes on this reaction. Lol! Just my two thoughts, "protector" had her daughter's voice @ the beginning. And in "Alligator tears" I personally looked at it as, when your significant other can sometimes be knowingly and playfully helpless and can ask for anything because they know you will give the loves the attention and the Adoration. Thank you for this video well crafted, educated and deeply thoughtful video. P.s. let's start a Beyonce Discussion Group LOL

The Beyince name is the incorrect spelling. Her mother's maiden name was actually her name, Beyonce. That's why she gave her that name to correct the mistake and reclaim her family name. So the fact that Bey is a household name and a global artist is a huge FU to the clerical error made to her mother on her birth certificate.

Flamenco features a flamenco guitar which originated in Spain and has a livelier and grittier tone than classical guitar. The first cowboys (vaqueros) in North America were part of the early Spanish settlers. They brought cattle and horses to New Spain (Mexico) and Florida. Horses had gone extinct on this continent in the prehistoric ice age. So they were the genesis of the American cowboy
