With regards to the "kids these days are so disrespectful" - I once read a long diatribe about how kids these days are lazy and entitled, and don't respect their elders, they don't want to learn and read, and how society is going downhill because these kids have lost respect.

Being in my later 30s, this whole "more followers = more value/respect " thing on social media blows my mind. I've seen people disregard objectively correct statements and well worded counters to misinformed opinions based purely on a persons lack of followers. "Why would I listen to someone with 3 followers? Mind your own business", that kind of crap. It's wild how extreme narcissism has become such a normal and accepted thing.
Its nothing new. 30 years back if you had a celebrity say something absolutely bonkers a lot of people would agree with him despite him being objectively wrong. Now its just follower count difference instead of screen presenence... which if you think bout it are very similar

I'm glad you mentioned the thing about people finding showing enthusiasm for something to be "cringe". That's really upsetting and frustrating, particularly as someone who strives to always be positive and enthusiastic about the things I care for. I share things I'm excited for _because_ I'm excited for them _and_ because I'd love to share that joy with other people. Sadly, these days you're much more likely to get either stony silence or negativity in response to earnest enthusiasm.
I do appreciate the part at the end where you discuss how it's cool to refuse to consider anything cool. The annihilation of earnestness in Western culture has been going on for years and shows no signs of slowing down.

There are many similar phrases I use. One of them is, "Who someone is when they have power is who they really are" or put more funnily, "You can tell a lot about a person by how they treat their dog."
That last one is very true though. I knew someone who used to really mistreat his dog, dude used to scruff and pin it down if the dog didn't immediately listen when it jumped up to greet me whenever I went over, turns out he got done for DV, because his woman didn't come back immediately when she said she would (from work, she was literally 4 minutes late) vile individual.

In a past life I was a bar manager the owner was both deep into owning race horses and a complete star fugger. The amount of powerful, multi millionaire assholes I had to deal with was astounding. But I just treated them like every other "normal" person in the bar and quite a few of them fell over themselves trying to impress me, it was weird. Truth is, alot of folks who flaunt their wealth, flex there follower count, or hang around with a gaggle of flunkies and yes people, just want your attention and deference. If you don't give them what they want they will beg you for it by showing off more.
I have had the experience that if you don't care they try to figure out if you are more famous than them and if they can't find anything go to assumptions like you must be rich or whatever because how else could you not care that they are so famous. It's weird

I do think social media makes people worse in general.
While there have always been terrible people, and social media makes these more obvious than before, social media also rewards it.
There's no better example than youtube where engagement is the same regardless of whether it's good or bad. (Including this post. You're welcome).
People can just lie, deceive, or generally be a horrible person. And they will get money for every person calling them out on their horrible behaviour. If they correct themselves, the engagement stops. So they are incentivized to double down and keep it going.
As for the expressing interest part, I think it may have something to do with social media as well. It is an environment where everything can be scrutinized at any moment. You liked something that someone made who now 20 years later said something that twitter doesn't agree with, so you are now a horrible person and must go on an apology tour that nobody is going to accept anyway. If you don't share your opinions, you can't get cancelled for them.
Just to add to your (very accurate) breakdownn, I feel this is also the reason shame has all but disappeared from society since social media has taken over and clout has become more important than anything else (to some people).
Like you said people can monetize both the good and bad, and lets face it drama get tons more engagement than anything else. So people have no problem doubling down on their BS because as long as it keeps them relevant and the engagement keeps them paid all shame does is cut into those things.
I've seen tons of videos where when someone's being an A-hole and then someone starts filming it. However the person being filmed doesn't hit the breaks and try to act better but instead they decide to floor it and act like even more if a D-bag just because they know that acting that way will more likely get traction and clicks. Social media is rewiring some people's brains in the worst possible way imo.

I agree with this, which is why the person who said 'disable algorithms' in chat is correct. Social media is better for mental health when you can more organically discover stuff and people and aren't constantly barraged with information at a pace faster than you can digest it.
I was with you until you started talking about cancellation - if a creator gets cancelled and a large amount of their audience *chooses* to stop consuming their content, generally the thing that they did was very messed up. thousands or millions of people don't all make the decision to essentially boycott a public figure unless whatever happened is bad enough for them to all feel unhappy about it. cancelling happens, and there are problematic aspects to it, but it's frustrating when so many people exaggerate how it actually works
The " I got more then you, so I am better" kinda reminds me of what children do...of high school, and it is very much on them if they decide to be a self-centered immature bully who think that more people are around them is better.

To anyone struggling with self doubt and battling with their fears i want to say that its ok to fail. The important thing is to try again and again. Sometimes your fears and doubts will win and the self improvement journey is filled with stepbacks. But even if you fail a lot of the time that doesnt mean that you are not improving or that you are back where you started.
I was the one that asked mmo daddy the original question and im very thankful for the advice. On that day my doubts won and i thought less of myself for a dumb reason. Its always dumb reasons that are somehow damaging us the most.
Instead of getting pissed and frustrated at myself for feeling the way i did, i decided to be kinder with myself. My self doubt won that day and it will win a million more times and im fine with that. Whats important is to keep trying, to try and fail is much better than doing nothing at all. I'm glad you touched upon wanting to see people be more accepting of actually showing emotion and enthusiasm for things. One of my favorite creators on RUclips right now expresses the kind of enthusiasm for the stuff he features in his videos even if he does add in some dry British misery for comedic effect. Chris Broad. Dude just goes around the less-explored places in Japan showing genuine interest, and the focus is always the place and what it has in it, good or bad. And it's that style of vlogging that seems so absent when it comes to people just going places not to show off the cool things, but just flexing how much they have in order to be able to go to these places. And having been to Tokyo myself, it's insane to see these people making these types of vlogs and how not only is their content uninteresting, but also kind of disruptive to both locals and other tourists just trying to appreciate where they are at the moment.

The kids at my school are very understanding regarding the psychological problems of other kids in general.
In one class we had a kid that was really afraid to go to school and ended up running away a few times (noone had an idea why, he just couldnt handle it) and the biggest asshole i have met at that school, that is so incredibly disrespectful towards teachers and other kids took the one who ran away under his wing.
That was so crazy.
The way you said social media connects people but disconnects people, josh, is a great way of looking at it.

14:40 a friend of mine who's a 26-year-old adult acts like this. Constantly stays quiet and whispers that it ain't that big and impressive; it's boring; it's cringe.
Also there is more about echo chamber and acceptance double-edge swords. On one hand you get to know more people and feel more accepted by society when you realize something you are is not weird or only you, but on the other hand it may often become an echo chamber and intensify otherwise not so intense conflict or emotions/ideas. I think just like anything else, using internet and social media is a skill that needs to be learned and taught, and must understand what you see on MEDIA is not reality, it's a condensed small piece of society.

Social media is a tool, it neither good nor bad in itself. The question of whether it is good or bad truly comes down to how it is used and in the majority currently it is bad as it is used for a lot of selfish reasons of greed, fame, etc and causes a lot of mental health issues as it makes people feel inadequate as they see all these fake/snapshotted lives that make theirs look terrible (grass is greener on the other side). It also has the disconnect which allows people to do and say things that they wouldn't be able to directly to a person.
The good is it's ability to inspire people to try things they may never have thought of, share ideas, bring people who enjoy niche hobbies together (like W40k, etc) so that they have a larger group to enjoy it with and lastly can be used to push good messages or break past some of the propaganda we are fed through official channels such as the news (though this does allow a negative also of conspiracy theories becoming a massive thing)
I find the idea that "it's just a tool, neither good nor bad" very naive. Yes it's a tool, but its existence and features heavily incentivizes some specific human tendencies, which as you said are more often than not negative, because it was specifically designed to basically trick our internal reward system. And it does it to everyone, even good people. _Everyone_ feels the pressure to "curate" their feed and only show the "best" even though it's largely a fake version of their life.

I feel social media has allowed a lot of connection but I also feel like it's taken a lot of integrity. People can be really fucking nasty because they don't for the most part risk having to face consequences in the real world. Social media helped me meet some amazing friends, but i'm also seen really nasty people be able to bully people with no repercussions
funny the last thing about how not showing interest is "being cool", as someone who had difficulties to show interest in things due to living in a constant state of apathy some years ago, I'm just saying that if you have an interest that gives you passion or moves you is a life gift.

the chasing of clout on social media and how the social media almost always promotes it is a major negative part of social media. but being able to connect to many different people globally is one of the greatest things about social media. as it stands and how social media is curated is an outstanding color of grey.
I've joined streamers chats and just talk with them and maybe one day if they have an open slot and I've talked about the game a lot with them they'll just ask if I want to fill. Not because I'm good, not because I'm a popular streamer, not because I have a RUclips following. I just join in conversations by being friendly and engaging. A good person doesn't care what your social popular or wealth status is at they will care about your ideals as a person. If you're a good person good people will want to be around you. You should never have to feel inferior around your friends while having fun.

the person who i look up to the most is jack black. the reason why isnt because of how famous he is, its because of how positive of an impact he has on everyone around him. hes incredibly talented in all of the right ways, but hes such a positive influence on people around him, and has kind of shaped my humor over the years to a degree. i just think hes a big positive force, and ever since i was like 3 or 4 years old ive wanted to be like him. i just want to be a positive presence around others, and while i may struggle at times, its absolutely what i would like to be. jack black is a great example of how id like to be, which is why i look up to him

With that last point about it being uncool to think stuff is cool, I've been talking for maybe a literal decade about how we live in a post-sincerity society. In our hyperreal, postmodern world, irony and cynicism have become the default modes of being and genuine emotion has become something to be spurned. Look at the way sarcastic humour is used in big-budget movies to undercut emotional, serious moments with these "nudge-wink" nods to camera. It's basically the movie going "don't worry guys, we get that this premise is silly." It's maddening.
You have a lot of good hot takes. I always find it interesting, since I also think of you as being so young. It just goes to show age is not always equal to wisdom (wisdom at a young age, instead of old).

The instant you could be facebook friends with a company making baked beans should have made it very apparent exactly how pointless the system was to anyone with half a brain but also how dangerous it was as a way of manipulating people into giving up what makes them them in favour of conforming to what the mob considered to be acceptable.
Huge followers numbers could mean they held a raffle that required follows on antisocial media, actual friends are far more important for mental health.
Respect is earned, first time I meet someone they will be at a neutral level and it's up to them whether that goes up or down. Anyone who demands respect is more likely to lose it.
I think there is a part of people that want to experience novel experiences, but with social media they have already 'experienced' it, so it all seems mundane. I hope people can find the ability to see someone do something cool and want to do it themselves rather than think it's normal now.

Regarding the whole social media thing, I genuinely believe it's almost a net zero gain. It is neither good or bad. It is both. And I know some people think it's naive, but I do believe that it does just as much good than bad for everyone. You just don't hear it as much because it's not exactly super interesting (or feeds into whatever algorithm there is).
Imagine how many people have been able to form positive connections thanks to social media. How much knowledge and information gets shared thanks to it. How easier it is to talk and interact with anyone in the world. And yes, you can flip all those things I said into a negative, which I do agree exists and it's sad that they do, it's still super disheartening to hear many people say that "social media bad, the world would be better off without it" because they forget about all the good things it's done for a lot of people.
And again, the point I'm driving towards in the end isn't that it's a completely good, or even a more good than bad thing. I just think it's a... thing. Neither good nor bad. And I'm glad it's here.

I feel like social media COULD be overall just a good thing for people but the problems are: Everything is run by algorithms so people jsut end up in the turbo radicalized bubbles of yes men/women, and a sheer lack of education around the internet and how it can affect people especially when it comes to influencers and how they portray themselves

About the whole "does power really just reveal who people were inside all along" question - in my opinion it (at least can) be more complicated than that. I think power affords you the freedom to explore sides of yourself that you may not have otherwise explored under different circumstances. The same person who became a raging egomaniac or a troll or a tyrant may have never revealed (and further developed) that side of them had they not had access to the internet, endless money or whatever influence or culture we are talking about.
But of course, much of this is conjecture. What ultimately matters is what a person has finally decided to do with their lives, circumstances can only excuse so much. But I believe it is important to realize the danger of such influences, so we or our loved ones hopefully do not succumb to them.
Freedom by itself doesn't sound like a bad thing at all, but it must be (positively) structured. If not, it can become chaotic or lethargic. If you are absolutely free, you are free to explore all the good and all the bad sides of yourself. Without guidance, it might be a matter of chance which side wins over the other.
Those people who try to look cool by downplaying their highlights just seem sad to me.
I don't follow many people on Insta but one person I follow is just a graphic designer who's living life and going to concerts. She just has this great energy about her that graps me. And that's because she's hyped for so many things. She is on concerts all the time and it never seems to be just a normal concert. It's always a highlight.

I don't think social media is bad per se, but I do think it often tends to bring out the worst in people. There are people I like very much irl that come across as complete wankers on Facebook, for example.

As everything in the world there is no white or black answer to whenever social media are good or bad, they are both at the same time, as everything they have their positives and negatives.
It depeneds on what you value, for me the ease keeping in touch with people is good, but the over consumption as well as the destruction of actual being social is bad.
Asking if social media is good or bad seems like a Teddy K thing. Like was industrialization good or bad? It has good and bad, but it's ultimately an inevitability with how our brains are structured and our basic social needs, just like industrialization was. The question is, how to we mitigate the harmful costs without impacting our ability to express ourselves, and how to encourage healthy usage.

i don't think social media is bad. what i think is bad though is specific kinds of social media sites. i don't understand why youtube is considered a social media site but i'd argue it's usually around the middle ground. twitter, reddit, etc. places with short form messaging that opens up tons of room for a lack of context is bad. with youtube, you do have the tiny bubbles of content creator fans going out and bashing people but that isn't nearly as common in my opinion as the twitter mob because that is what the twitter mob does. they don't look to better anything. they only exist to complain.
TLDR: it isn't the tools fault for being misused.

when i see people trying to act like having more followers or making more money means anything, it really just makes me shake my head. i only really see it as a ego trip when people think that because they have Luxury cars and 50 Rolex watches really means anything. all it tells me is you spend a lot of money.
its like when i worked at a super market, you sometimes would get those people that think the amount of money they spend means anything. ill treat you the same way i treat the person that only gets a single cup of coffee on a weekly basis.
