Khabib/Islam comparisons are interesting, but based on their history it seems Islam is a more skilled fighter, while Khabib is a more gifted athlete. Khabib was more sloppy, but he was much faster, had better cardio, and was able to explode and close distance much faster. It's very evident in the striking... Islam has way more technical boxing technique, but Khabib had way faster hand speed.

Post interview islam was right about trusting his striking more since he got KO by tht one guy islam has always been conservative with his strikes. Bcs he knows the safer route is always wrestling. But his striking has improve 10x over since then he shld just trust his striking so he can bttr setup for each styles. Bcs nobody can match his wrestling besides khabib so he can force setups for a knockout.
During tht fight islam struggled to finish unlike khabib n does not maul dustin as well as khabib he was more position strong. Whereas for khabib he holds inbtwn transitions to let his opponent try to escape but exahust then everytime they got up

Funny enough Dustin won the second on two cards and the fourth on all three cards. However two judges had it 3-1 Islam and one had it 2-2 going to the 5th. I had it 3-1 Islam but could see giving Dustin the second based on damage. Either way this is one of those examples line w Jon Jones in the past, bc someone’s so dominant when an opponent just doesn’t get destroyed and is doing better than others we tend to see it more favorable for the other opponent bc we’re so used to seeing domination. When in reality the dominant fighter is still winning most of the rounds it just doesn’t look the same bc it’s not as dominant.

In a weird way I think we learned so much about Islam in this fight. Some things we knew already - his wrestling on the cage, his short offense (wrestling), and his top control and crafty slick submissions are very high level. His striking has gotten praise but I wasn’t sold until this fight. His striking vs a legit striker is elite, but maybe a large part is due to opponents fear of the take down. The negative is that A - his neutral wrestling in space is complete ass, to the point it looked at best maybe a high level high school wrestling, and to get a switch hit on you by DP when you are “the wrestling guy” is just embarrassing. His neutral space wrestling he just dives at a high crotch or single with no setups, can’t finish if he doesn’t table the leg, and even tabling the leg he was using finishes that seemed very far from ideal (think back trip as what should be option A rather than a whip or running the pike on a slick sweaty slippery opponent just asking to get funk rolled or gramby’d). That said his striking is so good that if he does face a high level wrestler he will box his face off. But I think Leon kills him with ease but I would absolutely love to see it.

nah. i think edwards gets submitted in the 3rd. 170 with no tough weight cut and someone like edwards is easier work for islam.

Look at how badly Khabib dominated Dustin, “I can’t get him off me” and the thousand mile stare. Love Islam but he’s not better and doesn’t have better results than Khabib whatsoever. Ya you can use other opponents like GT but there’s a time gap etc Dustin should have technically been worse here after the knockout and age/wear and tear. Khabib’s issue was injuries, making weight consistently without injury or pulling out, and ending his career years too soon. Had he kept going no doubt his resume would have all these lightweights he didn’t fight as W’s on his record and probably lap a few he already beat. It actually sucks for Islam he has to constantly be compared to Khabib but it also got him massive recognition and he had the “blessing” to basically take over the division “god willing” as they’d say. I also think khabib would have had an easier time at 170 based off his pure domination and consistency with the takedowns and ground game. Islam stands a lot and gets denied then doesn’t try as often as khabib used to, probably bc his striking is so much better than Khabib’s. They’re both two of the top 3 lightweights of all time which is crazy In it’s own right and rare given they grew up together. When else has that happened. Seen prospect protégés but not that came through like this and to this level. And a protege then basically a straight up brother growing up together is a whole diff thing. Love seeing if they’re great people too. Dustin was a beast too

Terrible card. Dustin saved that entire PPV. If he went out there and got subbed in the first round like everyone said he would all anyone would be talking about for weeks was what a rip off that ppv was.

Dustin just needed to step on the gas and throw. He had that fight. He had it.. he just didn’t bite down and throw with him. But Islam can hit hard so maybe he felt that power and didn’t want to get KO’d.

from the first round he was getting countered and hard. obviously that makes someone not throw caution to the wind unless they want to shorten their night.
