I bet everything I had left except for 8.00 on Thunder Gulch. I took a beating that weekend. But Thunder Gulch bails us out, we went from 208.00 to cashing the derby and the last 2 races to walk out with a little over 10k. Never forget that.
I had $100 to win on the little chestnut! He is my favorite of all time. Too bad he hurt a cannon bone, I was looking forward to a showdown with him & Cigar in the Breeders Cup Classic. They should have bred Serena's Song to him. That colt or filly would have been all heart ❤
TG was a tenacious, fierce horse that ran with heart and gusto. Your assessment nailed it. The Bluegrass continues to be an overrated race. Usually, that late in the season the horses have been tested and the BG stakes is not where you should be pulling out all the stops. He won like a champion on Derby day at 25-1. I had his cold, which is a rarity for me. Usually, I'm torn between several horses. Not in 1995. I was more impressed with the way he won the FOY off a long layoff then won the FD.

They didn't award him horse of the year because this was a lucky trip. They awarded it to him because he was better than the others...two of the three TC jewels bear that out.
Thunder Gulch (foaled May 23, 1992 in Kentucky - March 19, 2018) Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner 1995.. R.I.P beautiful

so far he has been the last KY Derby winner to win the Belmont Stakes...so think about that before you slam him.
Another usual Pat wait all Day ride cost Timber Country in this race.
@jhordanian
that's cause Serena's Song and TImber Country were better. He just got the lucky trip.
