I had a problem with the engine surging, and thanks to your video, I have repaired my B&S 185cc/5.00 lawn mower...What an excellent video...Nobody could have made a better video, I swear...Nobody. Great narration, Excellent video quality, And perfect step-by-step instructions. You have found your calling. I Subscribed. Thanks...Joe
Brilliant video- thank you. Genuine diaphram for less than £3 off ebay, 25 minutes fettling later and mower is transformed. Changed my spark plug too ( NGK off ebay for £2.50!) and oil too. Now intend to take better care of my mower from now on.
Some time after the “hit-n-miss” ignition system was abandoned. Flyball governor systems kept those old engines from over rev, and work much the same way. A force is either applied to a rod or it isn’t.
well i thought i had. it only seems to run on the petrol that the primer puts into the carb when you prime it. any ideas. the primer is supple enought when its out of the tank.
Does that gas tank leak around the seem? Looks like it may from here? I thought i had carb problems till discovering leaks around tanks seem when i poured and rinsed out tank. Lil quicksteel solved me is it this or that or how bout this.. Lol. Thanks for good info video!
I have a Bolens push mower with a 3.5 hp Briggs and Stratton with this exact carberator. Have done this service several times. My symptoms have been engine surge but this service fixes it. I noticed water as well as grass clippings/ debris makes in inside the tank. I can see how water can get in there but can't figure out how the other trash is making it in there. These carbs are very easy to work in though as is the whole mover. Nice vid and thank you for sharing.
I have tried to replace this, but I seem to have a petrol leak on the front of the carb, (on the diaphragm under the O-ring) opposite side to primer.. I cant tighten the screws anymore then they are now? the diaphragm looks flat but its still leaking>?>
I cleaned and replaced the gasket and diapragn.. It worked for awhile .. now i got the same problem . engine starts runs for about 10 min before it dies.. The primer bulb colapses.. Is their a fix for this??
can anyone tell me if you turn your mountfield 140 cc rm45 on its side to empty the oil as I can't see a plug under the lawnmower. if so what a stupid idea
Excellent instruction video, Josh. Very clear on the verbal instruction and excellent camera work to help us see exactly what you were doing as you described it. Great job! Thanks!
Although 95% of the time these are your problems, But just know I have had where the bolts that hold the carburetor (Tank) on vibrate loose which causes the weight plus movement break or crack the plastic intake tube (Attached to carburetor) which gets worse in time and eventually will not start because the tube can not do a proper job at drawing the fuel,They usually crack at the intake valve where bolted,This tube has 2 screws which you can only see after removal of the starter housing.. So just something else to keep in mind,And not just with this type of Briggs engine.
I have new B& S push mower it won't run . I haven't seen a mower like mine on you tube . hope I did't buy a dud! it will run when I pour gas in carb, so I know it's a fuel restriction problem! had no trouble with my old mower for 10 yrs.. all I had to do with it is prime it! I am very dissipointed in this new pil of crap!
in the past when I need parts for Briggs they wanted all of the numbers ser numbers, model number, code numbers, off the engine and hp of the engine that may have change but take them with you any way so you don't need to make another trip.
can you please tell me why the engine stops, and sucks in the red pumped red rubber, could be the bump diaphragm, or one of the filter webs Thanks in addvanced
Excellent. Very clear and passionate. Very concise way of speaking, no extra words ! You should do more videos or Corporate Videos ;>)) Thanks, I found many details that were wrong with my 2d hand mower !
Great video. I did this too (video here: ruclips.net/video/b0qoSrWP7jg/видео.html ) but I replaced the carburetor as well since it was fairly cheap for the kit which included everything, including the diaphragm. Runs great now!
I have a 1984 b&s M4 mountfield major, im not sure what HP she is although the sticker has faded most of it but i can just see 5HP, but is it a 3.5 or a 5?
Mower was running rough, watched your video and after cleaning carb ended up replacing the gasket and diaphram for $8 and works like a champ. Thanks! Used the B&S p/n 5083 combo includes spring and screen.
Same fuel restriction problem on my B&S 3.75 power washer. It would run for 3 seconds after priming. Diaphragm looked OK so I soaked the plastic gas pick up tube and screen in paint thinner (didn't have anything stronger) for 24 hours. Blew out the thinner with a compressor, reassembled. Starts and runs great.
Get 2 air cleaner screws and cut off the tops. Use it as a guide to install the diaphragm. Open the governor vane and see if the throttle screw touches the engine. If not, replace the springs. It's stretched. There is a special oil change tool to change the oil on 4 h.p. Briggs. Amazon has it. Replace the carburetor if replacing the diaphragm don't work. If the engine kicks back, the flywheel key could be sheared. Disconnect the plug wire and crank it around and see if it still kicks back. If not, it's not the key.
Still having trouble with it starting, I replaced the spark plug, cleaned out the carberator best I could with cleaner, but did not replace the diaphragm or gasket yet, and now the primer doesn't seem to be pulling any gas at all, could it be the primer, or should I have replaced the diaphragm/gasket?
After putting it all together again my mower is clicking and won't start... Could it be something with the governor? What do I have to do? I have the same exact mower
Check the spark plug for carbon buildup. If it's covered with soot it may be causing a short on the plug thus preventing the formation of spark. If carbon buildup is a problem check the plug to see if it's the correct type and the gap is set properly (0.030") .
Ken Ishida is exactly right. This IS one of the very best DIY videos and explanations that I have seen - and I've looked at plenty of them. Thank you Metal in Motion.
10.59 and i'm thinking there's nothing wrong with the gaskets, hang on a minute whats that large orange fuel intake. That will be mine in the bottom of the tank. Thanks for the vid ;-)
I have the same mower. why doesn't primer return . all I get is one pump then have to wait and wait for it to come back. this was once cured by replacing the air filter, but now, even without a filter, its not springing back. going to disassemble it tomorrow and Clean the carb and fuel screen and inspect gasket for wear...anyone have any ideas about primer return?
I checked out my mower this am, you are the best it is now purring like a kitten....great video.....i also changed my oil, spark plug, blade and cleaned the machine.....thanks again.....I found I was missing a screw in the front so thanks for that info..
Many thanks this is almost identical to my model which I have to prime with a spoonful of petrol as the button is perished, but which recently started firing up then cutting out when the primer was burned. Stripped down, new gaskets cut by hand, cleaned out, reassembled and now runs better than ever.
Great video ... While you've got the air filter off you need to check the cleanliness of the sponge filter. If the sponge is dirty, wash it out and when completely dry add a few drops of clean oil to the sponge.
Perfectly done video showing the process step-by-step and little hints along the way of what to watch out for to make sure the repair goes without a hitch. Just repaired my 5 year old Craftsman edger in less than 30 minutes. It is up and running like new. I couldn't find a local shop to work on this small engine, and even if I could they would have charged at least 10X what it cost me for a new gasket/diaphragm!!!
This video is a model of how these "how to" videos should be made. It gave me the information I needed without subjecting me to self indulgent showmanship. I just needed to know what I would find as I delved into the mechanism. I fixed my motor without any expense at all because dismantling and cleaning were all that were needed. Many thanks.
I have been "frettin'", fussing, almost cussing and almost having a running fit ! I am so glad and appreciative that I found your you tube video on this lawn mower. I have the same engine. I listened to the video twice. Excellent Video ! Easy to Understand ! Thank you so very much !
Thank you so much for posting this video! I am a 52 yr old single mom and my mower would not stay running. Followed your video and it now starts first pull every time and stays running! You are awesome!
This is one of the best DIY videos and explanations I have viewed regardless of the device or kind of repair. Videos on how to perform surgery should be so well done. Thank you!
Thanks for posting this. I have the same mower. For the past couple lawn cuts the mower has been running rough. Like surging up and down. Lastnight I was cutting and mulchin. I ran over a thick bunch of leaves. The mower died. I went to restart and it wouldn't. There is nothing stuck under near the blades. Today the mower almost started for 2 seconds and then cut out. Could this be the gasket? Its got fresh oil, gas, and good plug. Just can't figure it out. Thanks
I have the same motor on my pressure washer. Do u know why my PW won’t turn off when I move the throttle lever back to the far right (off position)? It barely idle like it turning off but doesn’t.
There is a little black wire and a tab that sticks down from your throttle lever. The black wire is held in by a little spring clip. In the off position the tab on the the throttle lever and the spring clip are supposed to touch. Either that tab is bent so its not making contact or you have a problem with that wire. The wire goes from that throttle lever spring clip usually straight to the ignition coil. I dont have one I the shop or I would send you picture.
you saved my lawn mower today. I forgot to install the O ring you show at 4:01 so not enough gas inside of the motor because of not enough succion for the membrane pump. Many thanks.
Thanks so much for this excellent video.Transformed a sputtering, hard to start push mower into a smooth running machine. Could not have done it without your detailed instructional video.
Excellent video!! I turned a hunk of engine that had 3 inches of water in the gas tank, a seized up throttle cable (that wouldn't release against the flywheel ~ causing it to not start in a million years) and a flooded out carburetor and rippled diaphragm...into a smart trim motor, just from watching this video. But, just one thing I got stumped on. The engine seems to rev up and down slightly noticeable, and I think it has something to do with stretched out springs on that "whichamacallit" next to the carburetor. My quest to you is: WHAT IS THAT PIECE THAT HAS LEVERS THAT FLIP BACK AND FORTH? Is that some kind of choke? Because both levers stick out in front of the air filter cap, and it seems it regulates the rev of the engine. Can you help me out here?
+chivone21 Hi, I just fixed mine. That lever is a governor and it is controlled by air flow to the engine and the two little springs. As the engine speeds up it stops the engine over revving. As the engine slows down it allows more fuel to the engine. This allows the engine to maintain the same speed regardless of load. The springs need to be in good condition. Their part numbers are 691859 and 690250 for my engine but YMMV. If you write down the numbers across the front of the mower and take that to the mower shop they will have the correct parts. Very expensive little springs. However, very important they are in good condition and installed correctly to get the best response from the governor.

Water in tank and torn diaphragm from neglected maintenance. Check what model engine you have before buying. you can find all the Parts on amazon. If you find it near your local hardware store all the better.
Ive done this a few times with always a good outcome. My neighbour's lawn mower carb now leaks like a sieve around gaskets. No wrinkles. Everything installed properly, it seems. Irritating
Saw another video that suggests a certain order when snugging down the five bolts. One guy replied that it solved his leak problem. With the gas cap in the upper position, start snugging the bolt in the 2 o'clock position first and work around clockwise. The fifth bolt is in about the 12 o'clock position.
Karen Turner I had wondered about that, too. Tried a different way of screwing the stuff down with no luck. Realized the carb was about 13-14 years old and it is probably warped. . a new carb solved it. damn plastic. Thanks, though.

Very concise and clear. Steps taken were very practical and sensible. Thanks.
Just spent £80 on a service for mine. With your help I can definitely do this myself in future. Clear and simple instructions. Thank you so much.
Brilliant video- thank you. Genuine diaphram for less than £3 off ebay, 25 minutes fettling later and mower is transformed. Changed my spark plug too ( NGK off ebay for £2.50!) and oil too. Now intend to take better care of my mower from now on.

Thanks Josh, keep up the great work.
Brilliant video wished I had viewed it earlier as made mistake removing tank,& had to replace a spring but now I know how
Thanks a lot mower running well now saved me a big repair bill
Thanks for this useful video. The explanations are concise and the approach very methodical. Well done!
Great stuff. Clear, concise. My Nana could do the repair following your instructions!
Thanks for your time and talents!
Very nicely presented.
Just watched the video going to attempt to do mine tomorrow........wish me luck
The wind vane is such an elegant method to maintain constant rpms. I wonder who invented it back in the day.
Some time after the “hit-n-miss” ignition system was abandoned. Flyball governor systems kept those old engines from over rev, and work much the same way. A force is either applied to a rod or it isn’t.
thanks from the uk. i've got a working lawnmower again. nice one.
well i thought i had. it only seems to run on the petrol that the primer puts into the carb when you prime it. any ideas. the primer is supple enought when its out of the tank.
Superb explanation! Thank you!
thanks, straight forward and to the point.....

Hey are u still active on your channel???? U have good videos. It’s a shame u quit making them
hey bro, what's the size of the bolts that hold the fuel tank? for both..
Thank for great video

#Great Video
did all this a and it ran great for about 30 min maybe then it died and won't start, just like it was doing before the tune up????
I cleaned and replaced the gasket and diapragn.. It worked for awhile .. now i got the same problem . engine starts runs for about 10 min before it dies.. The primer bulb colapses.. Is their a fix for this??
Great vid, thanks! :-)
what is the kit number for this mower
can anyone tell me if you turn your mountfield 140 cc rm45 on its side to empty the oil as I can't see a plug under the lawnmower. if so what a stupid idea
It cant be this simple i did all this. AND IT STILL HUNTS FOR STABILITY?
You may need to replace the governor spring.
What is this sick crap? Diaphragms? What's next? Volvos? I have reported you.
THIS is the way a video should be done! Great job. No questions necessary.
Excellent video. Real easy to understand. Thank you!
Excellent instruction video, Josh. Very clear on the verbal instruction and excellent camera work to help us see exactly what you were doing as you described it. Great job! Thanks!
Best video I found for the disassembly of the carb
A great help ! Had it off , cleaned and reassembled in an hour thanks!!

Good Morning.. The pull assembly not broke.. The string came off the spoil. Tried to put it back on and a coily like spring came from under it?

how to replace that red rubbery thing???? and if something looks like a diaphragm thats it!!
No fold or pinch in diaphragm or gasket but it is oozing fuel. Over tightened or too loose. It is running nice though.
Great video. I did this too (video here: ruclips.net/video/b0qoSrWP7jg/видео.html ) but I replaced the carburetor as well since it was fairly cheap for the kit which included everything, including the diaphragm. Runs great now!

Outstanding video! Thank you very much!
hi Josh, what do you use to clean the air filter if you need to?
Mine push rubber has middle of hole, does normally?
Thanks a lot very useful vid....can get on and fit the 795083 diaphragm now (£4.50) and cut the grass in the morning :-)

I just needed to know what I would find as I delved into the mechanism. I fixed my motor without any expense at all because dismantling and cleaning were all that were needed. Many thanks.
I would've checked to see if the carb was warped when I it off. Those carbs are known to warp from the heat on the engine.
Oh Dang...I blew it with my mouth before I read your disclaimer that came later......Your done fer!
Absolutely first class, I've followed the step by step instructions & my mower works like new. Excellent video, clear & concise.
I have been "frettin'", fussing, almost cussing and almost having a running fit ! I am so glad and appreciative that I found your you tube video on this lawn mower. I have the same engine. I listened to the video twice. Excellent Video ! Easy to Understand ! Thank you so very much !
I followed this video step by step with new gaskets fresh fuel however the motor still surges any thoughts ??
