After watching a bunch of videos on foam rolling, I've discovered something: presenters shouldn't wear dark pants while showing where to roll. With the video compression, even at higher bitrates, the position of the roller on the leg becomes really hard to see. That goes double if you are using a black roller!
One video I watched had a guy in black pants using a black roller on a black mat. I couldn't see a thing!

If your spine shifts its called Spondylo lis thesis (spaces added to help pronunciation). There are lots of consonants in there.

I've been cured in the past by other videos from this channe after other doctors have given me bogus advice and useless drugs. Since watching these guys, I've learned that pro-active spine health is an advantage in life plus a way to maintain dynamic mobility, as well as a cure for issues that may not seem relative to disturbances in the spine. Thanks for breaking down some good methods for supplementing physical therapy and explaining why. These guys are awesome, that crazy skeleton and the circle of life...! Very true my good man, I'm 35 and I've always accepted my fate in the soil to feed the worms that will fertilize our future generations. As a runner who is training for a marathon, these foam rollers ruclips.net/user/postUgkx9XSsjzA4f84VmhBCHlyhec7XILIxennL are really good for sore and tight muscles. This one is a good size (mine is the purple, 36 inches) not too big but big enough to work and roll both my legs at the same time - I took a photo holding the roller next to me just to provide a better representation of its size. I noticed some reviewers who complained that this is, “just a foam noodle”… and yes, that’s exactly what it is. It’s a high density foam roller. It is absolutely NOT the same consistency/strength/durability/ or texture as a ‘pool noodle’ thought and I disagree entirely with those that say so. As a former collegiate athlete and marathon runner, I’m comfortably giving this roller 5 stars. It’s lightweight and durable and does just what I need it to do at a budget-friendly price. Overall, I have no complaints and am happy with it!

At work one day I talked to ex-EMT co-worker telling him my leg was pretty numb and felt weird. He said loosen your belt but it didn't quite work. Then he pushed against the outside of my leg by my hip and said it's tight go buy a foam roller and explained what to do. Sure enough it was quite uncomfortable but not painful. Boy after doing it a lot in the tight areas it felt way better no numbness. He said that gets tight on him to. $14 to solve that problem. Now I used it on my back issues and they go away for a few hours. Best money I spent!

Why do Physical Therapist dislike Chiropractors and vice versa? Recently, I hurt my lower back. The solution should of been, go to Chiropractor to put spine where it needs to go and then go to physical therapist to strenthen muscles to keep the joints from moving around.
Instead, they send me to physical therapist to do exercises. I can do them myself, but they insisted I go to them 3 times a week. In the end, back still hurt until I popped it back in place. After I 'popped', it felt great and pain was gone.

Man I actually went to a place called Airrosti. Its a form of therapy that combines a chiropractor with a physical therapists. The 2 work hand in hand with you the same day and work together to get you feeling better, faster. The chiro uses a form of soft tissue release called myofascial release. They massage deep tissue in the back, hamstrings, and hip muscles with extreme pressure. Man it works. I dealt with debilitating problems at the age of 32 and 4 visits had me pain free. Plus I have a whole regimen from the physical therapist that got my specific problem areas determined by the chiro.

The most helpful thing I learned from my physical therapist to do with a foam roller is just to lie on it with the foam roller under the spine, from sacrum to head, and let the shoulder blades drape on either side and just relax and let gravity open everything up. It counteracts the all the stress caused from hunching forward. It was prescribed for me to supplement chin tucks when I was being treated for cervical radiculopathy, but I find it's also great any time I feel myself carrying tension in or between my shoulder blades.

I work on a computer all day, and I'm a fat guy at around 5'7 250lbs. Well about 2 years ago I started noticing pain in my lower back (almost the waist area), and I would really only notice it when I would be out walking for a couple miles. However, the past year now, and pain is worse and I literally can't walk more than a couple minutes without needing to prop myself up and kind of straighten my spine for awhile. I've talked about it with my doctor...she told me I just need to lose weight (that's obvious), but I've been big my whole life and never had this kind of back pain before. Over the last year I've went from walking and biking everywhere, to taking a taxi everywhere because my spine hurts. I've put on at least 50 pounds, and I know that's not helping my back any either.
You mentioned how the hip flexor muscles can be aggravated by people who sit a lot, and that it can cause issues with the lower spine. I'm wondering if this foam roller device is something that could possibly help my issue, or is it more just for general stretching?

I have too use a roll under my lower back. It's the only way to relive the pain. I have arthritis from the tail bone all the way to mid back. Actually I use the end of the bed and mattress, feet on the floor with a roll and have too have the pressure pushing upwards while slightly twisting my hips. I feel the hurt so good pain and feel the crunching and popping. When I'm done I feel like a new man and it last for days. I know you say not to do this, but man it works for me and I've tried all kinds of things to relive the pain.

It's strange to me that around 1:40 Bob is worried about jamming the joints together when you put the lumbar spine into hyperextension. That's exactly what he does during the cobra stretch he's demonstrated so many times. Also, Brad was rightly perplexed at Bob's bizarre explanation of tight hip flexors, lol.

First of all, love watching you guys. I couldn't use the foam roller with my sciatica at the beginning as I found it too hard and uncomfortable. One thing I tried at the beginning and it worked wonderfully is a Pool Noodle. I was able to just lean against it on the wall and push that way. Plus the advantage is the pool noodle won't scratch the wall. Imoprtant note, though, is to use the ones that don't have a hole going trough it.

      Channel rollers are way better
My favorite is the trigger point channell roller and the triggerpoint universal
I like the chirp, but they're not wide enough. I want to try the rollga, the stealth align, hella roller and the ultra roller
Seriously a channell roller will change your life

Bob and Brad are right - when I was 58, I cracked two lower ribs, close to the spine, using a back roller like the ones in this video. It caused some of the worst pain I’ve ever experienced. I couldn’t sit back in a chair or lie down for eight days. The only way I could sleep was to kneel beside my bed, cross my arms on the mattress and rest my head there for only about 30 minutes at a time.

Brad, you should place your mat on an angle so that we can see a side view of what you are doing rather than looking at the top of your head. You seem to be doing the roll much better than Bob, so I'd prefer to learn from you. No offense Bob, he is better at it.
