There was a moment during the GP where Max's lead over Lewis dropped rapidly from 19 seconds to 16 on the timing screen whilst the race director was focussed on cars further back in the field. I thought Max had picked up an unlucky issue late in the race, but it turned out he was just shithousing Bottas to try and stop him grabbing the fastest lap point.

What was genius about it? He was never going to stop him and he didn't. Superb by Valtteri, should have collided with Verstappen and simply said he slowed down and I didn't expect it. The FIA could would have to then check the data from the cars and Valtteri would be home free. Idiotic, unnecessary and childish move by Verstappen that should have been his demise if VB was a bit smarter.

One point and maintaining the lead in the Constructors Championship going into Brazil. Had they not done that, Red Bull would be ahead by one point. Yeah, there are still other 3 rounds to go after Interlagos, but in such a tight battle, every point is crucial.
That one point could decide the championship who knows. Remember 2008?

Considering Bottas pitted again to put himself 25 seconds behind Max, and considering Checo finished 18 seconds behind Max.
Surely on the last lap, Red Bull should have realised Checo wasn't going to get past Hamilton, and told him to slow down to block off Bottas again!! Would have been hilarious if both Red Bull drivers managed to stop him getting fastest lap!

I don't think this season has even been that close between Max and Lewis in terms of level of performance. Max has been comfortably better for most of the season. In fact the last time Lewis got the better of Max in a level playing field (ie no engine penalties or damaged cars) was in Barcelona at the beginning of May.

Well, imagine when finishing 2nd is seen as such a downfall. It is clear Mercedes could have been more competitive if they kept bringing upgrades like Red Bull does. But they decided to focus on building next year's car and rightly so! And even though their last upgrade was Silverstone, they've kept Red Bull on their toes.
The interesting and fascinating part about this whole thing was how something affects another thing - things don't happen in vacuum in F1. Mercedes made the mistake to pit Bottas the first time which then put Bottas too near the fastest lap defender (Max). Max at this point had direct control of and can affect Bottas' fastest lap attempt. And Max did! Realizing this mistake, Mercedes called Bottas in a second time, and then released him at the right moment so that he isn't behind the fastest lap defender, AND specifically behind someone that Bottas could leverage off - which is Russel, slipstreaming behind him to gain all the milliseconds he could get. Russel may have consciously helped Mercedes in this case, as we know, he will be going to Mercedes next year! Smart huh how everything played out?
Mercedes was able to make this decision (to do a second pit) easily because they already knew Bottas was not going to be able to score any points anyway as was already outside the top 10 and there wasn't enough laps left for him to gain more position.
This really just shows how strategic everything is in F1. In this specific case, it's not about "sportsmanship", it's about playing the strategy - milking the most out of all situations, and both sides applied their own strategies.
Mercedes has been making more and more strategic miscalls the last couple of years I feel though, even though they got it right in the end with the extra extra pitstop from BOT

@@radboudtl6411 I agree. Bottas was lucky to nail it on the second time around, with the correct spot on the track and with the drs from George. Without those two things I don't think bottas would've been able to do it.
@@revo2757 that point meant verstappen would've had 26 points rather than 25 and all points count towards both the constructors and drivers championships. Bottas didn't get to keep the point because he wasn't in the top 10 he just stole it so verstappen couldn't have it.
That fastest lap rule for 1 point is the best add on in F1! Hope they will be more things added for 1 point in the future! Like the fastest pitstop in the race should get a reward for the construction team
Clearly a tactical mistake from Mercedes by returning Valtteri so close to Max on their first try. Any traffic during the second attempt and he wouldn't have succeeded either.

Well, Max already had an accident with a lapped Ocon trying to unlap himself back then in Brazil and it cost him the race win.
He should be careful with risking 25 points for 1 additional point. You have to consider that Bottas might just get a unimportant penalty like Ocon back then if he would cause a crash, but Max could lose very important championship points or even the championship itself.
These little games may be entertaining for us viewers for a few moments, of course. But there's a bit more at stake tbh.

Why wouldn't merc do that when he isn't able to get any points anyway and it's the logical thing to do. Rb did the same with perez in silverstone and the only thing that's different is that perez would've got points and vallteri wasn't able to get points anymore
if he has trouble passing in a mercedes, things won't get better in an alpha.
