I like self-regulating deficit disorder, because it covers everything from attention, emotion, self motivation, impulsivity, vulnerability to addiction, etc.
Wow Dr. Russ, this was such a completely perfect presentation ! Thank you. ... I've certainly been one of those adamant agitators for renaming in some of the most visible ADHD forums on the web, particularly on QUORA and also on REDDIT. ... First you grace us with some of the more elegant choices for possibly more descriptive new names -- and yes, your choice is right on the money. But it's all the unintended consequences that I'd never given even a moment to consider. Now I am armed with the reasons WHY NOT to try to go renaming it (at least Officially.) I do wish, though, but it's too many words to ever reduce, that the name also communicated in some way that the disorder is the result of atypical neurological wiring and brain circuitry. When I have taken that tack to explain to some people how and why this is not a blowoff disorder about simply poor attention, it's the information about brain image scans showing completely different wiring in neurodiverse brains, vis a vis neurotypical brains, where I have gotten traction.
At this point, I want the general public to stop stigmatizing and getting treatment for the disorder. Oh, you don't look adhd. Then we can worry about changing a name. Love your work dr
Definitely not VD 🤣I completely agree on the futility of changing the name, there is enough misinformation already targeting ADHD online that a new name will feed the detractors persistence in calling it "made up". A challenge to your suggested alternate though that I think is not well understood - the focus on ADHD is almost exclusively on EF, and emotion dysregulation has long been sidelined (particularly for adult ADHD), that I am not so sure that EF assumes ED in common parlance and that EFDD will push ED further out of picture. In the context of a DSM diagnosis the focus is almost exclusively on EF as behavioural that even professionals in the field don't consider ED when diagnosing or treating.
Because its not really a dopamine deficiency. Look up "The ‘TRUTH’ About Dopamine" by Dr Sanil Rege on where he talks to the misplaced role of dopamine in ADHD lore. I have a feeling Dr Barkley will agree, but I'll be respectful enough not to post a direct link.

Important topic, short poignant video. I also wish we could rename it, but I even have my issues with EFDD: executive functions are impaired across practically all disorders, to various degrees (look at major depression, schizophrenia, Bipolar disorder ). That is, EF impairment is not unique to ADHD. What is unique is that the EF impairments are chronic and in a way stable - someone coming out of a depressive phase will regain functionality. Likewise, a psychotic break is a complete collapse of executive functioning. The name ADHD definetely does not capture the experience behind the disorder well. But that is not necessarily what the name if for - and the video makes a clear case why the name will likely persist.
How about ‘Focusia’: a difficulty in maintaining or directing our focus, be it our mental or physical energies. Thought of it the other day when I should have been working 😂 as personally I think deficit is inaccurate as I can have loads of attention just in the wrong direction. Focusia is a riff off dyspraxia, a neuro developmental disorder that affects coordination as does ADHD affect the coordination of our focus. Mental and physical.
Why would it be necessary to include both "deficit" and "disorder" or "poor" and "disorder?" That seems redundant, surely deficit is a subcategory of disorder and "emotion regulation disorder," "motivation disorder," and "executive function disorder" are all sufficiently descriptive?
I'm surprised not one mention of the Kinetic Syndrome. It is often refered to it as such in Germany. We've also been taught that it isn't a disorder, there's nothing wrong with having ADHD, the world is simply not made for us. We're not less than, we're different. We have a different operating system.
I'm not convinced. Is there some legal requirement which dictates that a disease or disorder must only go by one legal name? Why couldn't the ADA be amended to state something to the effect of "[NEW TERM] is equivalent to Attention Deficit Disorder and is subject to all the same protections and considerations"? It would require a bit of coordination between the medical community and legislators, but it doesn't seem like an insuperable challenge.
If there's physical evidence that you committed a crime against someone; you should get the maximum allowed by law and be tried as an Adult (Rather You have a Disorder or Not, Regardless of how smart you are or are not, and Regardless of how old you are).

i like that, gonna use it this way.

🤮
ADHD: A Desperate Hunt for Dopamine
More like a movie title 😂
ADHD: All Disordered Habits Defined
And noradrenaline.
ADHD: Arranging Destructive Heaps Daily
I like it

EFDD... because we are so "effed" 🤣
🤣🤣💯
We could call it “Dopamine Deficiency Disorder”, or 3D.

"Disorder" is the problem. Replace it with "Pattern" or "Adaptive Response". This goes for most of the DSM.

In my native language ADHD is called Activity and Attention Disorder.

Why can't a name be hyphenated
Like
ADHD a.k.a etc.
The legal analysis is not very convincing. In case you are correct, it could be named EFD aka ADHD
summed up: because it would take a lot of effort and potentially jeopardise current supports and laws
3D: Dopamine Deficit Disorder
But is it the dopamine deficit, or the atypical wiring and circuitry that causes the deficit?
Where in the brain is different or problematic compared to other brains? What about a name having to do with that?
Am I the only one that think EFDD would be assumed to be related to erectile disfunction for at least 20 years!
